11:02 pm
in this. just going to stay like this from now all the way through the predawn hours. and it's -- in fact, some of the heavier rain is going to come in the few hours before sunrise. finally when we get to noon tomorrow, we're going to get into a different phase. that widespread wall of rain by noon moves into the central valley. and then the second phase start, which is going to be around for a day and a half. all this stuff out here, these are the isolated showers, occasional thunderstorms mixed in. we're going to look at that in more detail in the first alert complete forecast. for now, i want to get you through this point through noon tomorrow when the biggest impact from the rain is going to happen. it doesn't look like the russian river is a major concern at this point, but it needs to be watched. when we look from the city south, just as much rain here. if we switch our vantage point, here's the flood watch. this covers the entire bay from now through monday morning. there's the possibility we could see flooding on roadways and some of the streams and
11:03 pm
creeks rise. but within the last few hours, there have been two flood warnings that have put out for the usual suspects in the south bay. the san lorenzo river going tluz santa cruz, and the guadalupe river. those are the two place that are now of first concern from places that are likely going to experience flooding. this start, it doesn't begin until we get to sunday morning at can a.m. there's no expiration time on that at this point. that's just when it starts, and then from then on we're going to have to be careful around these waterways. there are almost certainly going to be more added to this list. i'll be back. there's a lot more to look at on this storm, including wind, snow, and what this is going to do in southern california. back to you. >> all right, thanks, darren. emergency officials have been issuing warnings all week long to make sure everyone up and down the state is prepared for tonight's rain. the state says it has activated swift water rescue teams and collected

11:05 pm
living near the guadalupe river leave before the water starts to rise. >> you know, in times of danger, neighbors across san jose come together to support each other. it's when we see our greatest moments of community. we have opened up the roosevelt community center and have the camden community center on standby. >> the water that feeds the river and causes it to flood comes down from the santa cruz mountain, where it's already been raining for a few hours, creating dangerous conditions on the roads. our da lin is up there tonight talking to driver who is learned firsthand just how quickly things can go wrong in these conditions. >> reporter: the rain reached the south bay roughly around 4:30 p.m., and it hasn't really let up. and for some drivers it was more than an inconvenience. it proved dangerous. a jeep plunged 15 to 20 feet down an embankment in the santa cruz
11:06 pm

11:07 pm
>> it's raining too hard, stay home. check your tires. if you have low tread. >> reporter: at the scott's valley safeway, we found some residents live in remote parts of the mountain stocking up on food and water. >> i was trying to time it with the weather report so that i could come and get what i needed. >> reporter: mountain residents worry about mudslide, cooldowned trees, and power outages. it's not just in the mountains. down in san jose, officers responded to quite a few accidents, including the solo crash of a van into a pole. for pedro, even though he's sad about losing his beloved jeep, he's thankful they walked away without a scratch. >> we are lucky. >> reporter: it's worth repeating, stay home, stay safe, and stay dry. if you have to drive in the rain, slow down. >> people across the bay took advantage of the dry hours today knowing they'll be stuck pretty much at home tomorrow. at ocean beach in san francisco
11:08 pm
we saw some surfers braving the big waves this morning and in berkeley a youth soccer coach held practice today at the all weather fields and in walnut creek one playground was packed with parents trying to tire out those little ones. >> everybody's trying to get their energy out, get their kids outdoors before the rainstorm comes. you want to get their energy out so that they sleep, that they eat well, and you don't have just craziness, craziness in the house. >> we know about that. well, stay up to date with the storm as it continues to move through tonight and tomorrow on our website, kpix.com, or streaming on the cbs news app. still ahead tonight at 11:00, as the football world descends on vegas for super bowl lviii, we dive into the history of one peninsula bar that's been serving 49er fans for 58 years. we're also counting down to the grammy awards tonight night right here on kpix. we'll

11:11 pm
can't afford to go there, there is a place in the peninsula that's been bringing the faithful together for 58 years. max darrow has more. >> reporter: here in menlo park at the dutch goose, there is 49er history on the l whats. and if you spend a few minutes inside talking to some the longtime regulars, they'll share some 49er memories that'll certainly make you smile. for 58 year, people have made special memories at the dutch goose. and that trend will continue when the 49ers take on the chiefs in super bowl lviii. >> it'll be pretty special this year. >> reporter: sean baker and christian oliver have been coming to the goose since they were kids in the 1970s. they're pleased to get to know new regulars like linda. a few years ago it was normal to see 49er royalty at the goose. >> back in the day, it was not uncommon to see everyone among

11:14 pm
streaming on paramount paramount+. there is some rain moving through right now. >> -- the golden gate bridge toll. you can see the drops on the lens there. we've got to start back a little bit. just to give you the big picture view on this. i showed you the close-up view of the rain tonight and how much we're going to get between now and midnight. that's one of the bigger impacts from this storm, but there are other things to look at. we need to see this storm on a bigger picture to come away with a better idea of how it's going to go. here's that wall of rain with us from now through about noon. by the time we get to noon, all that sitting over here now, and we're left with the second phase of the storm. we pick the story up there. all the way through monday, day and a half, we're going knob the center of the system. isolated showers, of casual thunderstorms, that could be one of the more impressive sides of this storm as well. you get the first wave
11:15 pm
where it's widespread steady rain for a day, and then for the next two days you're living with the stragglers. that's going to be from the center of the storm. isolated downpours, on again off again. you'll get blue sky, the sky will turn dark, downpour, and then it'll leave. in addition to that, it's wind. look how the storm's developing. if we look at the water vapor, the beginnings of an area of low pressure beginning to form off the coast. it's going to develop in the overnight hours. by the time we get to tomorrow, we're going have this beautifully formed area of low pressure that's just going to appear seemingly like out of nowhere and be sitting right off the coast. and that's problematic. because that's where you get some of the strongest winds. you see the area of low pressure here. rotates a lot of energy around on this side. and we get caught right on that edge of it. and that's why the wind is going to be more impactful from this storm than the last one was. the center of the low is going to be right off the coast. we had a couple storms do that
11:16 pm
last winder, in fact. look at the screen light up there, lot of purple showing up. so we could see gusts to 50 or # 0 miles an hour in the mountains, but we could also see gusts to 40 miles an hour where you live. the high wind warning is in red. it's basically the outlines, all the hills. and that goes until we get to 10:00 tomorrow night. but if we color in where the majority of us live, we've got a wind advisory. doesn't sound as menacing as a high wind warning, and it's not, but you're going to have 40-mile-an-hour gusts in that period. we could have vulnerable trees go down anywhere in the bay. and some flying debris. we talked about those flood warnings off the top and that high wind warning through the afternoon. now we can look at the other side of the state for a minute and talk about the snow, which is going to be very impressive. three feet of snow on donner pass,
11:17 pm
snow down to 4,000 feet. great news for building the snow pack, which we needed. it's cold and wet. it's also going to be nearly impossible and probably just flat out impossible to drive through. so tomorrow through monday they're probably even just going to close the passes. this is the kind of scenario where they'll say, that's it, you can't even go. if you had to get over there, start thinking about alternate ideas. tuesday could probably be good. big picture view. you're going to hear a lot of headlines from this storm, and the majority of them on a statewide level are not for us. it's for that. and this storm is going to be very impactful from an intense rainfall and flooding standpoint for southern california. here's just the takeaway from that. we've already seen our rain. we know we've got our concerns here, which we're not going to take that lightly. we've got to stand guard ourself. but look at the comparison. close to 3 imps of rain. pretty good from now until tuesday. we're going
11:18 pm
to get 6 inches of rain in l.a. a significant flood story is likely to unfold in southern california. then that's really going to start happening on monday. monday into tuesday we still have several days to go before the real impact os that have start to play out. so that will be a big headline grabber. okay, tomorrow's a first alert day. no surprise there. monday scattered showers and thunderstorms. we'll monitor that if it meets first alert status, we'll let you know. and then, yes, there's another chance for some rain. but it doesn't look big or major by thursday. andrea, over to you. coming up in sport, the niners are ready to hit sin city, where they will try to win their first lombardi trophy since 1995. they're also handing out some invites to the purdy party. so much media scrutiny for the 49ers qb. we'll tell you who's invited.

have you noticed that brock purdy a rather quiet and humble guy, has become quite polarizing around the national football league. despite his many doubter, brock the the niners are a win away from bringing home the lombardi trophy. if that happen, there's going to be a purdy party. >> we had a dude, all right, who threw for more yards than any quarterback has in the history of this organization. >> brock purdy. >> grab yourself a beer and an appetizer, niner player, purdy's teammates have backed their guy all season, singing his praises through good and bad. they're getting an invite to the purdy party. >> our quarterback gets heat for whatever reason. i don't think brock deserves that, but comes with the territory i guess. >> but not everyone is sold on the guy who the niners drafted
