estimated to reach 92 miles an hour in some areas. that's on top of the 6 to 12 inches of rain that's expected to come down during the storm. let's send it back over to darren with more on this atmospheric river and what we might see this week. >> some housekeeping real quick, andrea, here's how much rain we've gotten already. we'll talk about wind in this visit to start things off. the first thing i want you to see is how we've done for rainfall already. this takes us back about 24 hours and look at the differences. some parts of the north bay are looking at 4 inches of rain, novato, but in general it was about 1 1/2 to 2 inches in other locations. let's get into the details. the wind, this is the one aspect of the storm that's done a lot of the damage obviously from so many downed trees and it's also got a lot of people on edge. the wind speeds were really intense at

the higher elevations. we had 90-mile-an-hour gusts on mount umunhum over late morning and into the afternoon. it's not that bad at this point, but it's still windy. it's getting a little better, but i want to go into a quick review how this happened and when it's going to stop. we had this storm responsible for all the rain pretty much develop right off the coast over the last 24 hours. you'll hear a lot of things about this storm, atmospheric rivers, the term bomb cyclone. technically this was a bomb cyclone. that's a legitimate meteorology term. it's been around for decades, but with social media it's taken off because it's great click bait. the only thing a bomb cyclone is telling you is that this storm intensified very fast. the center of low pressure dropped 24 millibars in 24 hours. that's what this did and it did it right off the coast. that's a very fast intensification and because it happened right off the coast, look at that bi deal
12:27 am
big band of deep purple. watch what happens over the course of the day. it's almost leaving, but it hasn't left yet. so we've still got this spinning area of low pressure off the coast and strong winds going right across the north bay mountains. the low moves away and the wind dies down. we're still seeing gusts 30 to 40 miles an hour. the high wind warning was supposed to expire at 10:00 tonight. national weather service had to extend it to 8:00 tomorrow morning because it's taking so long for that low to leave. you'll see it play out here as the colors go down. by tomorrow morning we'll be done with it. in fact, high wind warning expires at 8:00 a.m. and so does the wind advisory. most of had us are living with the wind advisory. those are the gusts to 40 miles an hour at the lower elevations. that expires at 8:00 a.m. as well. plenty of

snow in the sierra. this has been a real rough time frame for travel in the mountains and that populates with about 3 feet of snow in the higher elevations. tomorrow is still a real difficult day to travel in the sierra. we saw how the center of low pressure will move away. watch it kind of come back monday and tuesday. we don't feel the wind from it that time because it's weakening and it's a whole different setup, but we have to keep the rain going as we saw that in the first visit in the newscast. we're not done with the isolated scattered hit and miss showers till tuesday, plenty of blue sky tomorrow, but occasionally a little cell will move through. you'll get a brief downpour and it moves out, maybe some thunder and lightning, probably some more rainbows, that kind of setup for tomorrow. now on the big picture this storm still has its biggest impact to go. you'll hear a lot about the impacts this storm will have in southern california, same storm, different aspect of it. so the atmospheric river that
12:29 am
was getting fed into that bomb cyclone, here's the atmospheric river, that column of higher concentrations of water vapor pulled out of the tropics, you can see what that looks like now. look at the line of rain, where it's pointed and where it's going to stall. so same storm. we'll watch it from yesterday through tomorrow. that atmospheric river gets pointed right at southern california, stays there and kind of rakes across l.a., orange county, ventura and santa barbara. that is nuts. it's just going to continue going. now we're taking a look at tuesday. it's still there. this is going to be a significant storm for southern california from a rainfall standpoint and consequently, from a flooding standpoint, flash floods coming off of the mountainsides, urban flooding. you'll get all different kinds of varieties of it. debris flows where you get

landslides coming out of the mountains, there's a lot coming the next few days for southern california. this hasn't started yet for them. they've gotten a lot of rain today, but what happens the next two or three days we'll hear a lot about, see a lot of pictures. if you've got friends or family there, it's going to be a big story. one way of looking at the seven-day forecast, but let's get back to the virtual set and bring in the seven-day forecast which shows us we do have another chance for rain, but it's not a big deal, thursday, next system gets here, a few light showers, totally manageable, nothing like this storm. andrea, back to you. >> thanks, darren. coming up next, we speak to the woman stranded for 15 hours on top of her truck after it fell into
