this is kpix, cbs news bay area. down trees, widespread power outages. this afternoon we're getting a closer look at the aftermath of that powerful storm from over the weekend. plus the effort to recall oakland mayor sheng thao. the lead organizer joins us live in the studio. the 49ers taking on the chiefs. how the las vegas strip is getting ready to welcome visitors to sin city. thanks so much for joining us this afternoon. today is yet another first alert weather day as the bay area cleans up the mess left behind by those strong winds and heavy downpours. the rain, believe it or not, is not done just yet. let's get straight over to anne makovec with a look at the damage. >> reporter: crews still busy to clean up any down trees, power lines, and all of the debris left from the storm. we saw san francisco public works crews clearing out a tree that fell onto this parked car. it
3:02 pm
happened on dolores terrace. some neighbors say they saw the moment the tree came crashing down. the car's owner wasn't home at the time. >> we watched it come down and we knew it was coming because it was not a safe situation for a long time. >> we're lucky nobody got hurt. houses can be replaced, but you can't replace a life, so i'm glad everybody is okay. pg&e crews are working to restore power after strong winds toppled a power pole near homestead avenue. video from our chopper shows downed power lines and trees. some lanes are blocked off while crews work to make repairs there, asking people to avoid the area of pg&e. they say there are 162,000 people without power right now in the bay area. in southern california, up to nine inches of rain fell in

some areas over the weekend. los angeles broke a record set more than a century ago with more than four inches of rain on sunday. widespread flooding and roadways looking like rivers, seeing a lot of mud slide as well. they went down in l.a. and parts of the house and what was in it falling down the hill as we hear from a neighbor. >> it was like thunder and then the sound of trees snapping like twigs, and it was just this house. >> the danger of mud slides made worse after years of drought. the soil is weak. they are dealing with widespread power outages like we have been seeing, of course, up here in the storm. also dumping several feet of snow over the weekend. up to four more feet is expected. liz? >> thank you so much. first alert chief meteorologist darren peck continues our team coverage from our studio. darren, what
3:04 pm
does it look like out there? >> just one look at this system, liz. still sitting off the coast and why l.a. still has about another two days to go through it and you can see the clouds going towards southern california. and we will talk about us first though and how things played out. one thing i want to start out with is some uplifting storms as we showed you the problems it has caused. the statistics that will make us feel better for the payoff. if you look at the rainfall totals, several inches have been falling for many locations. if you pull out the tab that will show us where we are now for average, most locations are sitting about 120% above average for rainfall. so good news there. we are not all there, but most are there. recap on the winds. these are gusts to the 90 miles an hour range even higher and thankfully that is done. that warning was allowed to expire this morning. not looking at
3:05 pm
any concerns. we're not done with the rain. and because of the possibility for more localized thunderstorms, technically we are not done with an issue for the localized winds near any individual thunderstorms that do develop. of course, one thing we're keeping an eye on will be the north bay. where because of the amount of rain that we just saw, there are still flood warnings through sonoma county and for some of those streams and creeks, towards their banks. that's been allowed to go until 7:00 this evening. all right u back to the futurecast in terms of where the thunderstorms will be today. notice how widely spaced they are, not a lot to it. most of the action is off the coast. but there is just enough of a possibility here that we could see a stray shower really at any point from now taking us all the way through tuesday and really tuesday is going to be more blue skies than anything else and maybe a few scattered showers as we go through the afternoon and evening from the same system. rainfall totals from now taking us through tuesday and you get perhaps another tenth of an inch of rain. the way to think about
3:06 pm
the rainfall accumulations would be if you get one of those cells, either the remainder of this evening or tomorrow, you'll get bigger totals than that before it moves out. wide view and now you can see why even on the wider view the system is not entirely done. just hanging up out here. but watch what happens. center of low pressure that's still driving all of this very slowly works its way south over the next 36 hours. this is why we need to keep a chance for the isolated shower still in play. then watch what shows up by wednesday. that's a totally separate system. a much weaker, way more run of the mill and weak cold front that will deliver some rain, a quarter of an inch of rain and that's it and that sounds light, now in light of the storms that we've seen over these past two cycles. the one coming in on wednesday will pale in comparison. yes, a chance of rain on wednesday and thursday and you'll see that.
3:07 pm
there is a chance of rain every day now through thursday. but we know tomorrow, what is left over and then wednesday, it's the next system with fairly light rain. good news, we're not looking at anything that we saw from yesterday until that system will come in where they will pick up a little. and for wednesday, we will still feel that breeze as that light shower comes through and that should be it. let's put it in the seven-day forecast and we've got a chance of rain and it is saturday, sunny, low 60s. a great looking weekend. it's good because we will be all occupied on sunday any way with the super bowl. so weather will not be a factor here and they will be playing inside that game there any way. back to you. >> thank you so much. the group hoping to recall oakland mayor she think thao is moving forward in its efforts to replace the current mayor. joining me now is the judge,
3:08 pm
the chair of the group oakland united to recall she think thao. thank you so much for joining us. >> i'm pleased to be here. >> no secret oakland has had a rough several years. why is it important to remove the mayor right now? >> right now it is important because this mayor has made it worse. let me just explain that there are reasons we are seeking to recall her and it falls in two categories. eight, she's incompetent and b, she's dishonest. she admittedly missed a deadline to apply for a grant to curb retail theft. and that was important and so she needed all the other jurisdictions in california that got plenty of money to address this problem. and in addition she fired chief armstrong. one of her first acts of mayor. police armstrong was doing an excellent job as mayor of oakland. curbing crime, addressing problems. she
3:09 pm
fired him. it was later determined that that firing was not justified. there was no basis for that. in addition she has lied about declaring a state of emergency. she stated last year there was not a new police chief by the end of the year. that she would declare a state of emergency. we are still waiting for her to declare that state of emergency. and finally it is important to know when she came into office -- [ inaudible ] it could have remained in oakland, but she has lost the a's. you know what they said about losing the a's? they won't be missed. that's what they said. they won't be missed. the reality is the a's will definitely be missed in oakland. sheng thao will not be missed. >> to oust d.a. pamela price as you said we don't have a police chief in oakland. is there some concern though that if you oust the mayor, there
3:10 pm
will be no heads of major parts of the government. it will be in even more turmoil? >> i disagree with that. number one, we will have another mayor because in the interim until there is a new election, the president of the city council will be the mayor. and in addition if things can't get any worse in oakland. mayor thao has taken the city down. has taken the city down, and we're losing people and losing businesses, we are losing lives. and the turmoil is because of the actions and the decisions that she has made. so i don't see that as a problem. and i will tell you that we have had so many people come together over this recall. we are uniting all of oakland, the flat lands, the hills. everybody is coming together in support of this recall. >> and real quickly, some are saying though this is sour grapes. you removed him from
3:11 pm
that police commission doing the recall effort to get back at mayor sheng thao. what do you say about that? >> i laugh at the whole concept. i'm an accomplished judge, number one. i care about oakland. i think that is a dismissive attitude for people to think that anybody would spend the time and effort and ask people to make this commitment and donate money to carry out some kind of revenge. i don't do that. and i certainly would not have done it in this instance. and so i think that's a problem with her inflated ego that she thinks i would spend my time trying to get back at her. it's funny to me. >> all right, thank you so much for joining us this afternoon. >> you're welcome. now earlier this year, mayor thao released a statement on the recall saying "every day i have a chance to fight for a safer, more affordable, more prosperous oakland. i ask all oaklanders to help me achieve
3:12 pm
that vision and hopes of collaboration and push aside fear and division." and we did reach out to the antirecall group. they weren't able to come in for an interview today. we're hoping to hear from him soon. we are counting down to super bowl lviii. 49ers facing off against the chiefs. coming up, we'll have a preview of the fan experience, where people can test out their own skills and potentially meet the players. as a football world descends to vegas for super bowl lviii. one peninsula bar has been sending niners fans for 58 years. we dive into the history in how they're

coming to the goose since they were kids in the 1970s. they're still regulars, and they're pleased to get to know new regulars. a few years ago, baker and oliver say it was normal to see 49er royalty at the goose. >> back in the day it was not uncommon to see everyone, you know, among us, joe montana, roger craig, and jerry rice. i mean they would be at my gym. they were a part of the community back then. randy cross who is our guard, you know, he was like i'll take it. he went up to my dad and said let me take them around and introduce him to the guys. i got about 20 autographs and got to meet everyone through big randy. [ laughter ] >> reporter: greg stern also grew up going to the goose. he now owns the place. >> this is a niners corner here. a little bang, bang action there. >> reporter: standing here for a moment will take them back. >> love the things that come in here and bill walsh has come in

here, montana, roger craig has been wonderful. some of my childhood memories watching these guys come into town and really give back what they received in life. not because they're looking for clicks and that kind of thing, but because they could and they felt, you know, it was the right thing to do. >> reporter: the fork lord is an important part of the dutch goose's story. >> i haven't been coming here as long as everybody else, but all the stories of joe montana and jerry rice, ronnie lot coming in is just special. >> reporter: what is really special says baker who like some 49er greats is enshrined in the goose's history books or on its walls. >> this place is our community. it's my community. i live three blocks away. half the people that come here live, you know, within a six-block radius. it's just a great sense of community at this bar. >> reporter: a community that will come together for another chapter of dutch goose history that hopefully includes a 49ers super bowl victory.
