storms unleash ed record rainfall across california. hundreds of thousands of customers are left without power, and the rain is not done yet. king charles carries on after a cancer diagnosis. what we know about his treatment as prince harry travels to the uk to see his father. and -- >> i know i'm blessed with a lots of great players around me, so right now it's doing whatever i can to be a great 49ers team and get that great ring. >> let the tough talk begin. super bowl lviii night kicks off. we'll take you to vegas where anything goes as the players meet the media and their ans. good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we're going to kick off with the weather. the wet weather in california has turned tragic as at least three deaths are to blame in california on falling trees.

most of coastal california is under a state of emergency after being hit with days of rain. this highwater rescue took place in los angeles yesterday. more than 10 inches have fallen since sunday across the l.a. area and more rain is in the forecast. jonathan vigliotti shows us the damage. >> reporter: southern california remains in the midst of a storm for the history books, powerful and life-threatening, a sea of mud and debris from relentless downpours, flooding roads, swelling creeks. this is the normally dry l.a. river, and this is the impact. i'm carter evans in a neighborhood not far from l.a.x. that got nearly 7 inches of rain so far. this is a hillside home. the woman who lives here said she heard tree branches cracking last night and then this, a wall of mud smashes right into her bedroom. it's still slowly seeping in right now. and the worst part, she says insurance won't cover it. we were on this road in the city's heavily populated san fernando county where a wall of mud and boulders came crashing down. 16 people were evacuated. devastating conditions seen

throughout the region. the storm, which the national weather service had warned, potentially catastrophic, hitting the entire california coast. to the north, wind gusts topped 100 miles per hour. the sacramento river, a rages current. and san jose, one of numerous rescues from rising floodwaters. this tree falling onto a car, another hallmark of this storm. uprooted trees causing at least three deaths and major damage, the result of the ground now saturated from a series of atmospheric rivers. watch what happens to this tree in the community of loomis. back in los angeles residents are still coming to grips with a storm for the ages. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news. well, turning now to the surprise announcement that king charles of britain is battling cancer.

a statement from buckingham palace says he's undergoing treatment, but there's a lot we still do not know. the king is 75 years old and just 17 months into his reign. tina kraus is at buckingham palace. tina, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. well, king charles is here at buckingham palace this morning, but palace officials are not saying what kind of cancer he has or how serious the cancer is, but news of the diagnosis has come to a shock to many here in britain because the king has remained in relatively good health throughout his life until now. the revelation that king charles iii is undergoing cancer treatment is dominated headlines this morning in the united kingdom. buckingham palace says the 75-year-old monarch is resting at home and that he'll continue with his official duties, though, his doctors have advised him to postpone public events. >> i think there's assurance he

can still conduct his day-to-day. >> reporter: king charles was released from the hospital for treatment for the prostate and that was not cancerous, but that's when doctors detected cancer somewhere else in his body. e was found. we do know it's not >> the palace is not telling us what the cancer is, what the tissue type is, and where it was found. we do know it's not prostate cancer. >> reporter: he told his sons about the diagnosis. prince harry is expected to travel here to visit with his father in the coming days. >> my thoughts are with him and his family. >> it's extremely sad. i'm just in shock. >> reporter: president biden posted on x he wishes the king a swift and speedy recovery. >> i'm concerned about him. i just heard about his diagnosis. i'll be talking with him, god willing. >> reporter: he looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible. as king charles steps out of the spotlight, husband son prince william is expected to return to his public royal duties this

week. the heir had taken some down time as his wife kate had recent abdominal surgery. >> tina kraus in london. tina, thank you so much. houthi rebels are suspected of attacking a cargo ship in the red sea in their latest assault in the ongoing war on the gaza strip. the drone attack happened in the western port city of hodeidah. the ship was identified as a barbados-owned ship. the cargo ship suffered slight damage from a projectile that hit a window on the bridge. no one onboard was hurt. nevada holds its presidential primaries today. president biden is expected to win with lesser known challengers on the ballot. he returned to the white house last night after campaigning in las vegas since sunday, and he met with hospitality union workers and small businesses including a small tea shop. nikki haley will be the only one on the ballot today.

due to a quirk, the gop is holding caucuses this week where president trump will hold it but not haley. yesterday "the wall street journal" reports haley wants secret service protection on the campaign trail. she cited an increase in threats as trump's last major rival in the republican race. border security is one of the top concerns among voters. a group of bipartisan senators unveiled a plan to overhaul immigration policy but somehow some lawmakers are calling it dead on arrival. scott macfarlane has more. >> reporter: a day after another 5,000 migrants were stopping crossing the southern border, the political divide over migration appears impenetrable. the plan is widely considered the strongest border bill in decades. it would increase the number of border patrol agents, require the government to temporarily close the border to immigration when 5,000 migrants a day try to

cross over a seven-day period, and speed up the asylum progress. migrants caught at the border would wait months, not years for their cases to be heard in an effort to work with the catch-and-release process. house republicans called it dead on arrival, refusing to bring it up for a vote. >> i don't believe it meets the criteria necessary to solve the problem. >> reporter: speaker mike johnson has been criticized for following trump's lead, again urging republicans to kill the bill. >> this is lunacy, this bill. it's a gift to the democrats. >> reporter: frustrating oklahoma republican james lankford who worked with democrats in crafting the legislation. >> i would hope people wouldn't make their decision based on what a presidential campaign is going to do. >> do you think they're misreading it or trying to make false statements about it? >> i do think there are folks creating false statements because because they don't want anything to pass through during this time period. >> reporter: the bill also includes $60 billion in ukraine

another case for the actions of its police officers. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "denver post" reports a black woman and four young female relatives were handcuffed by aurora, colorado, police and held at gunpoint reached a $1.9 million settlement with the city. they were forced out of their car in 2020 and made to lay down in a parking lot when police mistakenly believed the vehicle was stolen. a lawsuit claimed the officers' actions were evidence of profound and systemic racism. in 2021 aurora reached a $15 million settlement over the police-involved death of elijah mcclain two years earlier. "the washington post" says they'll require applicants to submit s.a.t. scores.

the s&p 500 lost 15 points. more tech layoffs. snap, the parent company of snapchat announced it's cutting more than 500 employees monday. that's about 10% of its global workforce. it follows recent mass layoffs from other tech giants like amazon, google, and microsoft. a national labor relations board regional official has ruled that dartmouth college mn's basketball players are school employees and can hold a union election. a vote on unionization is expected in the next few weeks, and if the majority of players vote in favor, they could gain the ability to bargain with the school over compensation and working conditions. a dartmouth spokeswoman says the school plans to appeal the decision. and burger king is launching its first ever million dollar whopper contest. all you have to do is tell them what your dream toppings would be for their flame-grilled
