home of super bowl lviii between the 49ers and the chiefs. this is kpix, cbs news bay area. pg&e says this week's powerful storm had a historic impact. many customers lost their power and how many homes are still in the dark. the bay area gets hit with another round of rain. we are tracking this storm and how long it will stick around. the niners hit the practice field ahead of the super bowl is the chiefs play out their strategy to try to tackle the niners. thank you for joining us
3:02 pm
this afternoon. we are your super bowl station with full coverage from las vegas as the niners get ready to take on the kansas city chiefs. we will have the latest from vegas in just a moment. first, here is anne makovec. >> police in san jose gave us the mugshots of two guys who are responsible for dozens of retail thefts in the south bay. jaime florez and thomas are accused in over 70 heists in the city of san jose alone over the past six months. detectives found over $75,000 worth of merchandise from target nike, rei and 's sporting goods . thieves walked into the store, grabbed expensive merchandise and took off into a waiting vehicle. >> they go in and they already know what merchandise they are going to grab. it is not like some random person going into a store and deciding they're going to leave without paying. >> florez was arrested immediately following a grand theft at westgate mall in december and they got a warrant
3:03 pm
for the other a week ago. he was already in jail for an unrelated incident. former police chief leronne armstrong has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the city and the mayor. he claims he was fired because he broke out against the federal monitor overseeing before he was fired a year ago. the mayor says that armstrong mishandled internal misconduct investigations. the mayor has not responded to the suit. the city attorney's office says it has not been served the complaint yet. pg&e says this sunday's atmospheric river caused more utility damage in a single day than any other storm in the company's history. tens of thousands of customers are still without power for a fourth day. the strong winds toppled hundreds of power poles, affecting more than 1 million customers across northern california. >> we are working diligently, very hard, day and night. are men and women are doing everything they can to restore
3:04 pm
power. >> the latest numbers show more than 37,000 people in the bay area still without power. still no timeframe on how long it will take to restore power to everyone. the martinez refinery is expecting people to expect blaring over the next couple of days as a temporarily shuts down part of its facility says this will be primarily what it describes as clean combusting gas. the refinery says this will happen again when it eventually restarts that art of the facility as well but they will give us another warning before that happens. let's get a check of our forecast now with first alert meteorologist darren peck. another round of rain? >> the way to think about this is the bulk of the rain has moved through. we have seen a bulk of the rain moved through. what i am looking at now is the clearing side with a caveat. we are in the clearing side of the storm but this is also where you can get isolated downpours, maybe even some brief heavy cells. we will take a look at
3:05 pm
that. first alert doppler shows you what i mean when i say the bulk of the rain came through around 9:00 a.m. and noon. you can see that line of rain having moved up to that used. we picked up a quarter to a half inch of rain. not a bad morning's work. most of that fell between 9:00 a.m. and noon today. it is good that the bulk of the system is done but remember there is more to go. let's take a current look and put it in futurecast. you can see why there may be some scattered showers. this model depiction is a little overdone. i don't think there will be so many of them. the other models are not quite as optimistic. the possibility is there from this point until we get toward tomorrow morning. that is in the predawn hours on thursday. on top of the rain that we have already gotten, how much more might we see between now and the end of this on
3:06 pm
thursday? in general, another .1 inches of rain. if you get a brief downpour, the number will be a lot higher than that and those could happen at any point for any locations. just a big picture view of the system. there is something else that goes along with this storm besides the rain and that is the cold air that is coming down. look at what happens when you use the water vapor. it is coming down from the north and bringing cold air in with it. there will be wind. there will be leftover showers as you can see on the big picture. it will be the cold air that comes down with this system that will be possible to create snow on the local peaks. if we look at now through tomorrow morning, the color coding shows an inch or two tops and the snow level gets down to 3000, maybe 3500 feet in that range. it is just
3:07 pm
enough that there is a pretty dusting of snow on the higher peaks. they would be down in the diablo range. it is too late for mount tam or mt. diablo to see much from this. another way to visualize this is more of the deep blue. that tells us what the morning lows will be doing. over the next two mornings, there will be a wind chill factor. if morning lows go down to the upper 30s, then most of the rest of the bay will be in the low 40s. we've got to factor in the 15 miles per hour breeze on that. it takes us ahead to tonight and then to tomorrow morning. there is just enough that it will make it feel a little cooler if you've got to be outside. snow in the sierra will continue falling. it is not a dumping of snow. we are talking about a couple of inches. just like it does here
3:08 pm
in the bay, down to around 3500 feet in terms of additional snow. there is one other thing to talk about before we get into the 7-day forecast. this system is the last one for a little while, certainly through this weekend and through much of next week. there is no rain in the forecast. when we start looking beyond that, take a look at the date. we are looking at the last weekend a half, focused more so on the last week of february. the climate prediction center puts out these long-term forecasts showing you what the confidence level will be. you can see california here, specifically down into southern california but also us falling into the range where there is a growing degree of confidence that precipitation will be above average. that is another way of saying the storms are going to be coming back. it is too early to be specific in what those storms will look like with location and timing. that is why we put it on the probability map. the
3:09 pm
precipitation is showing a higher confidence. let's go to the 7-day forecast. you can see we have a bit of a warm-up as we get into the weekend. we will be back to the low 60s through saturday and sunday and then mid-60s into next week. for the next few mornings, it will be cold over here with daytime highs and the mid-50s for tomorrow but we will start out in the upper 50s. back to you. we are counting down to kick off, just four days until the 49ers space the kansas city chiefs in super bowl lviii. the niners are taking the field at unlv today for a full practice but the team has not been very happy with the turf. we went to check out the field and the sod is lifted on the sides and with the rain, it is pretty soft. nfl commissioner
3:10 pm
roger goodell says he has had over 20 people sign off on it and coach kyle shanahan said his team will continue to practice there even though he had originally said that they were at a disadvantage. meanwhile, the chiefs talked to the media today about preparing for sunday's big game. tight end travis kelce spoke about their strategy against the niners. >> they are a smart defense. they understand what the possibilities are and how you want to attack them. with that being said, it will take hard work to get the timing done and get the alertness down for everybody. >> the niners will hold their media availability this afternoon and it will bring it to you coming up at 5:00 from las vegas. while the players are practicing for the game, kids got to test out their skills. more than 1500 kids were there for opening day and they got a chance to run, catch, practice tackling drills and the even do
3:11 pm
it with some nfl players. it is all part of the nfl's initiative to build exercise and a healthy lifestyle. >> it was tricky but it was fun. >> it was very fun . i don't wanted to stop. >> the kids say besides the fun and games, another perk is the day of school they got to miss. this was not part of the nfl's plans. a man climbed to the top of the las vegas sphere. there he is at the top. the sphere at the venetian is 360 feet tall, taller than a football field. that man was arrested. no word on how he was able to get up there in the first place. remember this? this is from 2022. our local cbs station in vegas reporting that the man who climbed the sphere is the same guy who climbed the salesforce tower. he calls himself an antiabortion spiderman. he travels across

the country scaling large buildings. when you think of vegas, hotels and casinos, you have a very specific image in your mind. lots of bright lights. there is a special gem on fremont street, a san francisco themed hotel and casino. we have the story behind this historic site. >> jeff victor's official title may be vp of operations at the golden gate hotel and casino on fremont street. but, his unofficial title is a steward of las vegas history. >> looks like three bells will get you 18/4. >> the san francisco themed goldengate casino goes way back to the very beginning of las vegas. >> the golden gate is the birthplace of tourism hotel and gaming as we know it. it is literally the ground zero, the first of its kind. >> it was originally the hotel

nevada. in the 1930s, it was renamed and then a few years later in the 1950s, a group of investors from the bay area decided they would bet on opening a casino in las vegas. over time, one bought out the other and it came down to one person. he ran the property for 40 years. the golden gate bridge and nods to san francisco were everywhere. these are the original vests that the dealers would wear. these are the gaming chips and people have the golden gate to thank for what would become the iconic vegas shrimp cocktail. >> they brought the shrimp cocktail down from san francisco. it is now a cliché in las vegas. the original one was here at the golden gate. >> las vegas has changed a lot. hotels have imploded, clothes rebranded and strung up but the golden gate has remained a constant.
3:14 pm
>> it is really remarkable that this particular property has stood the test of time. >> professor david schwartz, a gaming historian says that is fairly unique. >> one of the remarkable things is there have been changes to the golden gate but it has maintained that same identity, which is rare. you don't see that as much. it is almost as old as the city itself. for so many years, it has been a mainstay in fremont street that it really does deserve that iconic representation. >> this is where the original building started. the original rooms are right around here. >> here we are in one of the original rooms. as i described, they are quite small. they are 10 feet by 10 feet. victor takes pride in helping preserve the hotels history. >> i like being the current steward of it. >> vegas has so much of what you see on fremont street. there is something fun about
3:15 pm
that. >> a tip of the cap to san francisco in sin city's past, present, future. coming up, he will be wrapping the red and gold all the way to the super bowl. how one member of the faithful is traveling from the

the first time i tried to quit vaping, i told myself that it was like a mountain that i had to climb over and once i got to the other side, it would be clear, but i couldn't make it over. what really got me to quit was my little sister. i saw her vaping so i was back in the mountain, but this time she was up there with me. it's weird what you can do for others that you won't do for yourself. you want to see who we are as americans? i'm peter dixon and in kenya... we built a hospital that provides maternal care. as a marine... we fought against the taliban and their crimes against women. and in hillary clinton's state department... we took on gender-based violence in the congo. now extremists are banning abortion and contraception right here at home. so, i'm running for congress to help stop them. for your family... and mine. i approved this message

bowl and 1849 is the year of the san francisco gold rush. one member of the faithful has its own custom ride to the game. shawn chitnis shows us how he is traveling in style. >> he has got the gear. his car helps him rub the red and gold at all times and he has even got lags for the drives to las vegas. abel is excited for the niners to return to the super bowl this sunday. >> i feel confident until i start watching the news and they start talking about mahomes and how good he is. >> while the quarterback for the kansas city has him worried, he still feels good about the niners, especially after watching them all season. a member of the 408 faithful fan group, he has traveled out of state to cheer them on. >> it has been amazing. we really put something together. >> even before he leaves, abel is thinking about what he wants

listen up, parents . here is a way to get your kids into the super bowl. cbs has partnered with nickelodeon for a very special broadcast. spongebob squarepants will call the game from the fictional underwater town of bikini bottom with a special cohost, nate burlison. burlison is the

regular host of nfl slime time on nickelodeon and of course, the cohost of cbs mornings. niners fans watching on cbs will hear the voice of legendary sports national sports commentary gym nance. he will start with his catchphrase. our matt lively is in vegas and he got a chance to talk with him behind the personal meaning of that catchphrase. >> kansas city about to take on the one-seed baltimore. hello, friends. >> it is a welcome that has become revered by sports fans. from the nfl, pga, or march madness, it is not just another way to say hello, rather a significant message from the broadcaster. >> i did not want anybody ever to make a fuss about it. my dad was deep in the throes of alzheimer's and i wanted to find a way for him to know i was thinking of him when i came on the air. i used that as my little comment to let him know i am looking at him and i am

looking at you, dad. >> more than 150 million people to denver super bowl lvii and more are expected to watch this year's game which can be nerve-racking for any broadcaster. >> it became a blessing for me because i found a way to calm myself when coming on for the first time. >> with no intention of it ever becoming a signature phrase, it is what he is now best known for. >> i did everywhere i go. it is going through an airport, hello friend. it is a nice thing. my father was a nice man. he was a beautiful person. he was kind, kind to everybody. he had nothing but friends. >> nance lost his father in 2008 after a 13 year battle with alzheimer's but his presence is felt that the top of each broadcast. >> he is still with me and i see him for a split second when i say, hello friend. >> what a neat story. this is the seventh time

calling the super bowl and he has calls from march madness to the nfl, pga and more. i don't know what i enjoyed more about that, watching him tell the story or matt lively who i know was so
