home of super bowl lviii between the 49ers and the chiefs. this is kpix, cbs news bay area just days after announcing the deployment of additional chp officers to oakland, the state says it is sending extra attorneys to alameda county. i spoke with mayor sheng thao just a few minutes ago and asked her about the problems plaguing the town. it is the final countdown. we are just days away from the rematch of the niners and the chiefs in the super bowl. who the chiefs have their eyes on. as part of black history month, we have a special report on maternal mortality in the black community and one woman's efforts to reverse the trend. thank you for joining us this afternoon. we are your home for super bowl lviii and

we are counting down to the showdown in sin city. the 49ers facing off against the chiefs. we will have complete coverage from las vegas in just a minute. first, a look at today's news headlines. governor gavin newsom is sending extra state attorneys to alameda county to help prosecute crimes. those attorneys are being pulled from the state's national guard and department of justice. this comes a few days after governor newsom announced the state is deploying an additional 120 highway patrol officers to oakland. oakland is still without a police chief more than a year after leronne armstrong was fired by mayor sheng thao. he announced this week that he is suing the city and the mayor over his firing. i spoke with mayor thao a few minutes ago and she told me she is not going to let the suit or recall efforts to distract her from focusing on the key problems facing the town. >> there are a lot of issues in the city of oakland and there have been for decades. we have to come together to create this collaborative effort to move

oakland forward on a positive note and that is where i am going to focus on. >> alameda county district attorney pamela preis also says she welcomes any extra help to the governor's office. in alameda county, police have cracked two cold cases of a sexual assault and murder back in the 1970s after dna analysis. investigators say that fred farnham was responsible for the death of nellie hicks back in 1972 and 48-year-old teresa pico in hayward in 1979. farnham died in 2007. we are now on day five of the massive pg&e power outage. the latest numbers show that more than 11,000 people are still in the dark following sunday's massive storms. more than half of those are in the north bay. pg&e has not given a time frame on when everyone will have their power back on.

let s take a live look outside. first alert meteorologist jessica burch has your forecast from our virtual view studio. >> yesterday's storm gave us a half inch of rain in areas like dublin, san jose and into san francisco. as we take a look at what is happening today, we could see some pop-up storms into this afternoon. that area of low pressure starts to exit out of our region and high pressure will replace it. that dries us up as we head into our weekend forecast. here is what it is looking like today. the offshore showers will become more apparent in our local communities, producing .001 inches of rain through bodega bay and livermore. it clears up into the overnight hours tonight. high pressure starts to build in. partly cloudy skies tomorrow. actually,

saturday is looking beautiful. it will be as sunny as can be. taking a look at our long-range models, that is when we see wetter than normal conditions returning to the bay area. we are getting that break that we need. it will be sunny this weekend, just in time for the 49ers to take on the chiefs. all across the board, the weather is starting to cooperate with us. yesterday's system brought in some gusty conditions along our coast . it brought in all that rain we mentioned and it brought in the cooler weather. earlier this morning, low 30s up in the north bay and into the santa clara valley. 50s into this afternoon. a big change in our temperatures when it comes to these cooler conditions. watch what happens heading into the next seven days. we slowly start to warm back up into the upper 50s and lower 60s. that is how we will kick off next week. sunny skies right around the corner as we head into saturday. that is the light at

have a high maternal mortality rate here in the us. reporter lauren tom shows us it is a problem that one bay area woman is on a mission to improve. >> especially with black maternal healthcare, it is definitely in crisis. >> for marna armstead, the crisis for maternal mortality among black woman is not something she has experienced personally but they challenge she has chosen to take on headfirst. when she was pregnant with her daughter, she says her very first experience with her healthcare was rooted in racism. >> i walked into the doctor's office and they quickly were like shoving me to this other place. i did not know what was happening. this was not where i normally go. where is your case manager and all of this stuff. finally they check my id and they see that i have private insurance and -- wow . she

changed immediately. >> that experience is a common one and it led her to not only seeing a change but to be the change. today, as she serves her community, being an advocate for and partner to underserved pregnant people, helping educate and correct health outcomes that often start with implicit buy-in. >> america in and of itself has a problem with healthcare. even white people are not doing as great as they could be doing. if white people are not doing great, you go back down the line to the least served folks and they are suffering. we are suffering. >> the maternal mortality rate in the u.s. is higher than any other developed nation. according to the cdc, the maternal or talent he rate is nearly 3 times higher than it is for white women. while california is seen as a model nationwide to set a standard of

care, according to the state's health department, black women make up 5% of pregnant people in the state but 21% of all pregnancy related deaths. >> maternal mortality is not something that we can 100% eliminate but there are a lot of causes of maternal mortality that are preventable. >> dr. thomas works every day to do just that, prevent maternal mortality. in berkeley, they have not had maternal mortality in four years, in part due to implicit bias training that has been mandated at hospitals across the state since 2020. >> implicit bias training is the minimum but that is not enough. >> while racism is rarely the direct cause of a maternal vitality, dr. thomas says the numbers speak for themselves and one decision can have a lasting impact on a patient that can change their health outcome. even the outcomes where the patient did not die or had a poor experience, often

the first time i tried to quit vaping, i told myself that it was like a mountain that i had to climb over

and once i got to the other side, it would be clear, but i couldn't make it over. what really got me to quit was my little sister. i saw her vaping so i was back in the mountain, but this time she was up there with me. it's weird what you can do for others that you won't do for yourself.
