[ cheers ] good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. patrick mahomes, travis kelce, and the kansas city chiefs are back-to-back super bowl champions. mahomes threw a three-yard touchdown pass to mecole harman with three seconds left in overtime giving the chiefs the 25-22 victory over the 49ers. taylor swift was there with celebrity friends in tow after flying halfway around the world to see her boyfriend play. ♪ >> and you can't forget usher's high-energy show that featured surprise guests. cbs' jarred hill is in las vegas for us this morning.

what a night. >> reporter: yeah. what a night. almost threw my back out trying to thunder cloud with usher in the stands during the game. this was incredible. the kansas city chiefs are now the first back-to-back super bowl champs in 19 years. for the third time in five years, the kansas city chiefs are super bowl champions. >> viva las vegas! >> reporter: their sin city showdown against the san francisco 49ers went into overtime with the chiefs pulling out a 25-22 victory. quarterback patrick mahomes was hailed the super bowl mvp for his third time. >> not always pretty, but we continue to fight to the very end. >> reporter: pop star taylor swift celebrated with her boyfriend, chiefs tight end travis kelce. and the rest of chiefs fans went wild. musical performances really stole the show. halftime performer usher sang, danced, and skated through nearly 30 years of hits bringing out surprise guests alicia keys, h.e.r., will i. am, ludacris, and lil john. it started with "lift every voice and sing" called the black national anthem, "america the beautiful" by post malone, and the powerful national anthem by reba mcentire. before kickoff coaches and lahaina players were showcased as honorary captains for the coin toss celebrating a weekend that held their community -- a game that held their community together. kansas city has a parade scheduled for wednesday for fans to celebrate back at home. they're talking about a three-peat when the super bowl moves to new orleans next year. back to you. >> all right. jarred hill in las vegas. thank you. coming up later, beyonce

drops a big surprise in her super bowl ad. what fans can expect. and turning to breaking news now out of the middle east. israel rescued two hostages in a dramatic overnight mission. the idf says the hostages had been held in a second floor apartment in rafah the city on the southern border, by egypt. the army said israel launched a series of air strikes as special forces broke into the building while coming under heavy fire. the israeli military says the hostages, a 60-year-old and 70-year-old, were airlifted to a hospital in tel aviv where they were reunited with their families and are said to be in good medical condition. >> we saw them. the heart was beating on 200 maybe, maybe more. a lot of tears. hugs. not many words. just being together surrounded by the family. >> hospital officials in gaza

say dozens were killed in the air strikes. israel has described rafah as the last remaining hamas stronghold in gaza. prime minister benjamin netanyahu said that they are working to provide safe corridors and safe zones to protect civilians. defense secretary lloyd austin is back in the hospital. austin was taken to walter reed national military medical center yesterday with what the pentagon is calling a bladder issue. the hospital says that he's been admitted to the critical care unit for care and close monitoring. austin transferred his duties to his deputy, kathleen hicks, and has notified the president and others. earlier this year you may recall austin was hospitalized for two weeks for complications following prostate cancer surgery. investigators are trying to figure out why a woman opened fire sunday inside pastor joel osteen's mega church in houston. off-duty officers killed the suspect while two others were injured including a young boy. naomi ruchim joins us now with the latest on this investigation.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and that little boy remains in the hospital this morning as investigators try to piece together a motive for the shooting. joel osteen's lakewood church is the third largest mega church in the nation. despite this tragedy, church leaders say it could have been much worse. shortly before the 2:00 p.m. spanish worship service on sunday police say a woman wearing a trench coat entered lakewood church in houston, texas, and started firing. the shots heard here on cellphone video sent worshippers running as police say two off-duty officers confronted the suspect fatally shooting her. >> she had a long gun and it could have been a lot worse. but they stepped up and they did their job. i want to thank them for that. >> reporter: the woman had a 5-year-old boy with her who was shot during the ordeal. he's now in critical condition.

a man in his 50s was also shot and wounded. >> shots like a boom, something like -- how you say like -- yes, like a pistol. >> reporter: the suspect also told police that she had a bomb. >>we searched her vehicle, our bomb squad, and also the backpack. no explosives were found. >> reporter: the mega church which welcomes 45,000 people each week is run by celebrity pastor joel osteen who said his congregation is devastated. >> we don't understand why these things happen, but we know god's in control. and we're going pray for that little 5-year-old boy and pray for the lady that was deceased, her family and all, and the other gentleman. >> reporter: osteen said the tragedy could have been much worse had it happened during the much larger service earlier in the day. overnight federal agents searched a home in a neighborhood north of houston which they said may have had a connection to the shooting.

police have not said what if any relationship the woman had to that little boy or who actually shot him during the confrontation. anne-marie? >> all right. thank you so much. former president donald trump is facing criticism after suggesting that he would not help nato countries that don't pay their share of the alliance if they are attacked by russia. >> no, i would not protect you. in fact, i would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. >> during a rally saturday in south carolina, trump recalled how a president -- as president he told a nato member that he would encourage russia to do whatever it wants if an ally is not paying its bills. yesterday during an appearance on cbs' "face the nation," trump's opponent for the republican presidential nomination nikki haley reacted. >> don't take the side of a thug who kills his opponents. don't take the side of someone who has gone in and invaded a country and half a million

people have died or been wounded because of putin. >> the head of nato warned that trump's comments are putting the safety of u.s. troops and their allies at risk. and allies of president biden are coming to his defense after a special counsel's report described him as an elderly man with a poor memory. the report cleared mr. biden of wrongdoing in his handling of classified documents but raised issues about his mental sharpness. yesterday his personal attorney, bob bauer, told cbs' margaret brennan the report went off the rails. >> i didn't come away from the special counsel's failure to ask precise questions and think to myself he has mental acuity problems. i thought he was asking bad questions. >> bauer said that he went to the special counsel and the attorney general to express concerns about what he said were unnecessary digs at the president's memory. well, the senate moved forward with a $95 billion age -- aid package for ukraine, israel, and other countries.

in a rare sunday session the democratic-led senate voted 67-27 with 18 republicans backing the legislation. it faces opposition from former president trump and the republican-controlled house. the revised package comes after similar legislation was coupled with an overhaul of u.s. immigration policy collapsed last week. and turning now to the weather. snow trekking across the ohio valley today will strengthen to a major nor'easter tonight. winter storm alerts are in effect from central pennsylvania to boston. for areas expecting more than half a foot of snow. places in the higher elevations could see a foot of snow. the national weather service says travel may be very difficult to impossible during the heaviest snowfall tonight into tuesday. and coming up, a marathon record holder is killed. details about the crash that took the life of a young running star. and beach landing. a small plane goes down on a beach in mexico. wn on a beach in mexico.

at least one person was killed when a plane carrying four canadian skydivers crashed on a beach in southern mexico. authorities say the plane was trying to make an emergency landing yesterday when it crashed into a nearby turtle camp. a man inside the camp was killed. the four canadians and a mexican man were removed from the plane and are in stable condition. a suspect who went on a deadly shooting spree was captured, and a record-breaking runner was killed. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports marathon world record holder kelvin kiptum was killed in a car crash. the 24-year-old long-distance runner and his coach died in an accident in kenya yesterday. kenyan media reported there was only one car involved, and a woman in the vehicle was seriously injured. kelvin kiptum broke the world record last year at the chicago marathon when he crossed the finish line

in two hours and 35 seconds. "the commercial appeal" says a man believed to be involved in multiple shootings in memphis was captured after a manhunt. police arrested a 20-year-old man yesterday in connection to a series of crimes over a 12-hour period that left one man and multiple people -- one man dead, rather, and multiple people injured. officers initially responded to a carjacking yesterday. authorities say the suspect was out of jail on a $100,000 bail for attempting -- attempted first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. and "new york post" says a migrant teenager is being held without bail after firing at a security guard and hitting a brazilian tourist in the leg in times square. authorities say the 15-year-old boy from venezuela was stopped by a security guard thursday when he and two other teenagers tried to shoplift from a sporting goods store. investigators say the boy fired at the guard and into a crowd striking a tourist. they say he fired at cops who chased him. he was arrested on friday.

shrink-flation. here's matt pieper with today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: wall street set the latest record after the s&p 500 rose .6% to close above the 5,000 level for the first time. the dow did lose 54 points, but the nasdaq gained 196. s&p up 28 points. they're calling it shrink-flation. ahead of the super bowl president biden called on snack companies to stop shrink-flation when businesses cut product sizes but keep prices the same, describing the practice as a rip-off. think of opening the bag of chips and two-thirds is just air. mr. biden offered no solutions or policies to address the practice and did not name any specific companies. but several brands were shown in the video the white house put out including gatorade and doritos. elon musk has been ordered to testify again in the securities and exchange commission's probe of his $44 billion takeover of the twitter. a federal judge has given both sides a week to agree on a date and a location. the sec is looking into whether

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ while the chiefs and the 49ers were warming up for their big game, team ruff and team fluff took to the field for the 20th annual puppy bowl. a record 131 adoptable puppies from 73 shelters nationwide battled it out for the much coveted lombarky trophy. in the end, though, team ruff won 72-69. nickelodeon's "super bowl lviii live from bikini bottom" offered a different view of the big game, especially to the fans who got slimed ahead of halftime.
