with one complicating factor. a significant snowstorm hitting the northeast today. january's inflation data is out today. economists expect inflation to have risen by 2.9% last month. that would be the smallest gain since 2021. and the ratings are in, and super bowl lviii was the most watched telecast in tv history. over 123 million people tuned in to watch the chiefs beat the 49ers to win their second super bowl in a row. for more, download the cbs news app on your cell phone or connected tv. i'm shanelle kaul, cbs news, new york. it's tuesday, february 13th, 2024. this is "cbs news mornings." a nasty nor'easter. an intense storm moving across the northeast. some places could see the biggest snowfall in two years. why did she do it?

investigators trying to figure out what prompted a woman to open fire inside joel osteen's megachurch. it reveals some troubling news about her past. and inside the rescue mission. and inside a rescue mission. two hostages reunite with their families as we get new video showing israeli forces caring out the raid under cover of darkness. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with a dangerous storm moving through the northeast this morning with winter storm warnings stretching from pennsylvania to massachusetts. just take a look at this outside of pennsylvania right now. you can see the snow is starting to cover the roads already. it will make for a messy and potentially treacherous morning commute. it could dump more than a foot of snow in some places. wind gusts could reach 60 miles per hour, and coastal flooding is likely. and about a half a foot of snow is forecast for parts of new york city where schools are closed, but students will have

virtual classes. and the fast-moving storm will hit new england later on today. schools are closed in boston where the mayor declared a snow emergency. the storm could impact turnout today as voters in new york head to the polls for a special election to decide who will replace expelled congressman george santos. representative tom suozzi is taking on nassau county legislator mazi pilip to fulfill the remaining 11 months of santos' term. pilip is ethiopian born. >> desantis 2.0. same nontransparent phony baloney. just trying to get votes instead of saying what you think. i'm saying the same stuff i've been saying for my entire year in politics. >> they were trying to break me, viciously attacking me. but guess what? a former idf soldier you cannot break. >> santos was expelled from

congress in december after being charged with multiple counts of fraud and stealing from donors. and now to the war in gaza. president biden is pushing for a six-week pause in fighting as part of a new hostage deal, and he's sending cia director william burns back to cairo today to continue the negotiations. meanwhile we're getting a better look at the daring raid to rescue two hostages in the southern city of gaza. ian lee joins us. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. over the past few months, we've seen most of gaza's population flee to the southern part of the territory along the egyptian border, but there are growing concerns about their fate as israeli troops push south. a warning as it threatens to invade the southern gaza city of rafah. >> major military operation in rafah. it should not proceed without a

credible plan for ensuring the safety and support of more than 1 million people sheltering there. >> we cannot afford an israeli attack on rafah. it is certain to produce another humanitarian catastrophe. >> reporter: over a million displaced palestinians fled to rafah to escape strikes in hamas over the past four months. israelis say hamas fighters are also there and they want to destroy them. they've called on the u.n. to help evacuate civilians before a ground assault. >> don't say it can't be done. work with us to find a way. >> reporter: in southern gaza, more explosions this morning, a day after israelis rescued two hostages, a 70-year-old and 60-year-old from an apartment in rafah, but dozens of palestinians died from heavy air strikes conducted during that raid. >> every innocent life in gaza is a tragedy, just as every

innocent life lost in israel is a tragedy as well. >> reporter: president biden says the u.s. is also working on a hostage deal that could include a six-week or longer pause in fighting. the death toll in gaza now stands at more than 28,000. according to the hamas-run ministry of health. but there are fears as israel moves guard rafah, that death tell, that number could skyrocket. anne-marie? >> ian lee in london. ian, thank you. former president trump is asking the supreme court to pause an appeals court ruling that rejected his claim that he's immune from prosecution in a january 6 case. meanwhile a poll shows trump holding a 35-point lead against south carolina governor nikki haley among republicans voting in her own state. cbs's caitlin huey-burns caught up with nikki haley on her campaign trail. >> he's not qualified to run for

president of the united states. >> reporter: with early voting now underway in south carolina, nikki haley is launching her strongest attacks yet on former president donald trump. >> how do you explain his popularity here? >> i think the polls are the same that we saw in new hampshire, and i moved 25 points in the last three weeks of the race. you can look at any poll you want, but the reality is this is when they are starting to pay attention. >> are you prepared to take this all the way to the convention? >> i'm prepared to go from michigan to super tuesday. why don't we let that happen. >> reporter: haley slammed trump for saying over the weekend he would not protect nato allies from a russian attack if they failed to contribute enough financially to the alliance. >> no, i would not protect you. in fact, i would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. >> reporter: trump has long criticized nato, but these remarks drew outrage from the white house and concern from world leaders. >> i think what was said was not a sensible approach. >> reporter: though republican allies on capitol hill came to his defense.

>> i've learned a long time ago not to overreat at what trump says or what he tweets. >> do you take donald trump at his word? >> i absolutely take him at his word. russia has never invaded a nato alliance. why would you go and put that alliance in harm's way? >> reporter: she called trump unhinged for attacking her husband michael, an officer in the national guard. >> where is he? he's gone. >> you're going to mock my husband who's deployed 8,000 miles away? what does it say about him wanting to become commander in chief? it makes me worry about national security. it makes me worry about the future for our kids with him starting a war. >> well, that was kaitlin huey-burns reporting. and now to the investigation into the shooting at joel osteen's megachurch in houston. police are still searching for a motive, though, they say they found anti-semitic writings. the 36-year-old shooter had a

history of arrests and mental health problems, and her guns were bought legally. the details from cbs's janet shamlian. >> reporter: terror in a place of sanctuary. gunfire erupting during a church livestream just as a pastor was starting a sunday service in spanish. >> they're shooting. two people down. we need an ambulance. >> reporter: police say the 36-year-old genesse ivonne moreno went into the lakewood meg a megachurch with her 7-year-old son and opened fire. two fired back, killing her, amid a chaotic scene. >> these two officers held their ground. they held their ground in the face of rifle fire at point blank range. >> reporter: police say the shooter's son was caught in the

crossfire and shot in the head. tonight he's fighting for his life in critical condition. a 57-year-old man shot in the leg has been released from the hospital. authorities say the shootser, who also had a .22 caliber rifle, had a history of mental illness. nay say they also found anti-semitic writings. >> we do believe that there was a familial dispute and some of those individuals are of -- are jewish. >> reporter: lakewood is one of the largest churches. its televangelist leader joel osteen says that they were lucky to be between services. the shooter had at least six prior arrests including an unlawful carrying of a weapon, which she pleaded guilty to. tl rooifle the rifle which was used for the shooting on sunday was purchased in december. janet shamlian, cbs news, houston.

evening rush-hour. it then spilled on out onto an elevated platform where shots were fired. a 34-year-old man was killed. victims say some innocent bystanders were hit while standing on the platform. a case of bubonic plague was tied to a pet cat. the infected person likely contracted it from their pet or their cat who it's believed caught it from a rodent. the cat has since died. authorities say the person was treated in the early stages of the infection and poses little risk to the community. and cbs los angeles says a landslide spared luxury bluffside homes in dana point, california. during the latest storm rocks and debris slid down to the beaches just below two homes. one of the owners says his house is fine and is not threatened.
