votes to impeach homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas over the administration's handling of the u.s.-mexico border. the house's razor thin republican majority just got smaller. democrat tom suozzi wins new york's special election flipping the seat held by former gop congressman george santos. and out of control. a terrifying scene at a hospital as a car comes crashing through the emergency room. good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. alejandro mayorkas is just the second cabinet secretary in u.s. history to be impeached and the first in nearly 150 years. house republicans voted with a razor-thin majority to impeach the homeland security secretary. it was their second attempt after last week's vote failed, and again three republicans joined democrats in opposition. the matter now moves to the democrat-controlled senate where it's likely doomed.

cbs' astrid martinez joins us from new york with the details on how this unfolded. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the articles of impeachment against alejandro mayorkas passed on tuesday with a 214-213 vote with the majority made up of only republicans. three republicans did vote with democrats against impeachment, but this historic move has been criticized by some republicans and many democrats as based on policy disagreements, not accusations of specific crimes. >> the resolution is adopted. [ applause ] >> reporter: by a margin of just one vote, house republicans impeached homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas. >> our conference is willing to hold the biden administration accountable especially when the secretary of homeland security is violating our federal immigration laws. >> reporter: house republicans allege that mayorkas committed high crimes and misdemeanors by not enforcing immigration laws. u.s. border officials encountered nearly 2.5 million migrants last fiscal year alone, a record high.

in a statement, president biden called the house vote a, quote, blatant act of unconstitutional partisanship. >> the shortcomings republicans complain about are because they won't give him additional legislation to better secure the border. >> reporter: at the white house yesterday, the president pushed the house to take up a senate-passed aid package that would give $95 billion to israel, taiwan, and ukraine. >> history is watching. failure to support ukraine at this critical moment will never be forgotten. >> reporter: but republican house speaker mike johnson has indicated he's in no hurry to bring up the legislation for a vote in his chamber. meanwhile, the democrat-controlled u.s. senate is expected to begin the impeachment trial for secretary mayorkas before the end of the month, though the body is not trial convict and remove him from office. now house republicans have been accused of acting in bad faith in the impeachment, especially after coming out against the bipartisan deal that would have imposed the toughest asylum and

border policies in decades. anne-marie? >> astrid martinez in new york. thank you. cbs news is projecting that tom suozzi has won a special election in new york to replace expelled congressman george santos. he defeated legislator mazi pilip to fill the remaining 11 months of santos' term. [ cheers ] >> suozzi represented the district for three terms before launching an unsuccessful bid for governor in 2022. his victory narrows the already-then republican majority in the house, and the race has been closely monitored for clues about suburban voter sentiment heading into the 2024 election campaign nationwide. >> we won this race, we, you won this race. [ cheers ] because we addressed the issues,

and we found a way to bind our divisions. >> pilip conceded but promised to fight on. >> we are fighters. yes, we lost, but it doesn't money we're going to end here. >> santos was expelled after being charged with fraud, identity theft, and stealing from donors. one person was killed and five others injured when a car crashed into an emergency room at a hospital in austin, texas. video from inside the e.r. yesterday shows the chaotic scene just moments after the crash. authorities say the driver of the car died, and five people in the lobby were hurt including a child to with life-threatening injuries. >> it's very devastating. it's -- it's very -- broken glass all over. it looks like a bomb just blew in there. >> the crash is under investigation, but police say it

appears to be unintentional. and now to the big dig-out from the big winter storm that buried parts of the northeast under a foot or more of snow. the nor'easter knocked out power to thousands and disrupted travel on the roads and in the air. it forced new york city to deal with its biggest snowstorm in more than two years, including switching to remote learning which did not go well. here's cbs' lana zak. >> reporter: a near miss in the northeast as the fast-moving storm dumped snow from maryland to massachusetts. new york city saw the highest daily snow total in more than two years, just over three inches, but far less than the eight that was predicted by the national weather service. >> i wanted more. i wanted way more, and i wanted it to snow all day. >> reporter: while parts of connecticut and pennsylvania saw more than a foot of snow. the wintry white quickly turned slushy and slick. police responding to more than 1,000 accidents in pennsylvania and hundreds more in new jersey and connecticut according to state police.

air travel was also a mess with thousands of interruption the at airports including laguardia where more than a third of flights were canceled. >> i looked at the weather and it seemed okay. i made plans, but we couldn't even drive out. >> reporter: the massachusetts coast is under a flood advisory. louisa moller with cbs boston is there. >> reporter: low lying areas often flood, but northerly winds and an astronomical tide make this parking lot look like a swimming pool. >> reporter: as a safety precaution, many school districts closed. new york city public schools went remote, but the computer network had a meltdown when nearly a million students tried logging in at the same time. >> so to say that i am disappointed, frustrated, and angry is an understatement. >> reporter: now one great benefit of that online learning snafu, central park filled with kids who got to bring out their sleds for the first time in more than two years. but now that the sun has gone

down, all of this beautiful snow is refreezing on the roads. and authorities say now is the time to really be careful. lana zak, cbs news, new york. overseas now to the war in gaza. israel releasing new video it says shows hamas leader yahya sinwar inside a tunnel below the southern gaza city of khan younis with his wife, children, and brother. the idf says the footage was recorded october 10th, three days after the massacre which israel accuses him of orchestrating. meanwhile, officials say israel and hamas are making progress toward another cease-fire and hostage release deal. key meetings are moving forward in cairo to try and bridge the remaining gaps even after israel's air strikes and rescue mission in the city of rafah. the idf released this new video from a soldier's helmet camera. it says it shows -- rather the heavy gun battle troops

weinstein with his right to a fair trial. they say the judge succumbed to the pressure of the me too movement. weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison. new details in the gabby petito case and a tennessee fugitive was arrested. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "knox news" reports a suspect in the shooting death of a tennessee sheriff's deputy was captured. authorities say 42-year-old kenneth dehart was taken into custody yesterday at a house in knoxville. he's accused of killing blount county deputy greg mccowan and wounding another deputy last week during a traffic stop. officials say dehart was stopped on suspicion of erratic driving and refused to get out of his suv. a stun gun had no effect, and dehart allegedly opened fire. "fox newschannel" says a florida court published the depositions from the parents of brian laundrie and gabby petito in a civil lawsuit filed by petito's parents two days after laundrie is accused of killing

his girlfriend he called his parents. during depositions laundrie's parents said they were worried about petito's wellbeing after he call to say she was, quote, gone. they helped get their son an attorney but said they did not know what happened to petito at the time. her parents filed a lawsuit claiming laundrie's parents knew about the murder and helped their son avoid capture. and a man arrested in connection with a theft of a bronze jackie robinson statue from a city park. the 275-pound statue was cut off at its base last month and then hauled away. parts of it were found days later burned in a trash can at another park. police say there's no evidence the theft was race related. they believe the suspect, ricky alderete, intended to sell it for scrap metal. they say more arrests are expected. still to come, gauging inflation. why new figures have economists why new figures have economists just a little worried. ♪ upbeat music ♪

close since march of 2023. the index lost 524 points, the nasdaq was down by 286, and the s&p 500 lost 68 points. inflation ran hotter than expected last month. new government data shows prices rose 3.1% in january from a year ago. it's an improvement from december but still more than economists had expected. higher housing and food prices drove that growth. it wuts the fed's decision to cut rates in jeopardy. disneyland cast members are trying to unionize. roughly 1,700 performers and characters at the california theme park was not part of a labor union are causing themselves magic united. they're working with the actors equity association to try to achieve higher pay, a safe and sanitary workplace, and transparency in scheduling and rehiring. and a new survey expects americans will spend almost $26
