a 9:00, breaking news. a major backup on the golden gate bridge. protesters shutting down all lanes into and out of san francisco. what we know about their demands. a groundbreaking settlement between two east bay refineries and at reducing air pollution. who will get a big check and the changes people are promised. good morning, i am reed cowan. let's get started with those top stories. we are getting a first look at the results of the chp supported crime crackdown in oakland over in the east bay. governor gavin newsom office said officers made 71 arrests, recovered 145 stolen cars and sees four guns link to crime. newsom said 120 officers to the east bay to take part in the chp operation. a temporary operation took place between february 5th and the ninth. portions of the pacifica pier is open again and you may remember it closed in late december when high tides and huge waves torn to shreds. with rain in the forecast today, pacifica leaders are keeping a close eye on how it holds up. today are catholic communities in the bay area are celebrating ash wednesday. the religious holiday marking the first day of lent. the most holy season on the christian calendar. many followers are

attending services and having ashes place on their foreheads. disasters represent a person acknowledging and showing remorse for sins. many of the faithful also give up something important to them during the 40 days of lent . it is a first alert weather day in the bay area with daytime highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s. the big weather story is the rain and it is valentine's day. if you have any outdoor plans, maybe you want to hold off until tomorrow when it starts to dry up. today and the north bay we are starting to see showers formulate and it will move to the south bay throughout this afternoon with hit or miss storms into the evening hours tonight and that could cause issues on the roads especially as we are trying to travel around and get to dinner reservations. this is what it looks like a future cast this morning a started in the north bay and it sweeps throughout the bay area from the north to the south with windy conditions up to around 30 miles per hour into the evening hours tonight. the most part this is light rain and we are not seeing heavy cells build in from offshore that will produce too

much. if anything, we will see about a quarter of an inch as we wrap up the evening hours tonight near half moon bay and closer to about half an inch off into the east bay. into the santa clara valley it is dry into the evening hours tonight. but we gear up for more rain into the forecast as we head into this weekend. could an agreement between bay area people and two east bay refineries create lasting change? a major shift to tell you about. two east bay companies have given up fighting local air-quality managers and have agreed to pollution from their plants. along with customer missions, chevron and the martinez refining company will pay $34 million in fines for hundreds of air-quality violations. $20 million will be paid right up front. the money will go into a richmond area community air-quality fund. martinez refinery also agreeing to rigorous monitoring refineries have been under investigation for nearly 2 years after spewing dust the many neighbors said coated places with a live.

roadmap to try to revitalize downtown. the mayor highlighted $20 million to help small businesses . the launch of the vacant to vibrant pop up program to drop people downtown and jumpstarting efforts to transform empty office space into housing. she says the city had the lowest crime rates last year in a decade, other than 2020 during the shutdown. one of the things on the mayor's to do list is recruit more police. her budget funds 220 new officers to get the office to full standing. lezla goodin got to see a new academy class in action and learn the negative perception about crime in the city was a major motivator. >> reporter: meet the san francisco police academy, class 282. this is the highest turnout the academy has seen since the pandemic began. >> you will see what they are doing before you go out. >> reporter: san francisco

currently needs 500 police officers to meet the city demand and these cadets are helping the city reach that goal. over the next 35 weeks they will train inside and outside the classroom. >> is the your vehicle? no . >> reporter: helping them is a police captain at the academy. >> i'm sorry, sir. please respond. i will need your assistance. >> reporter: they are on track to graduate . more recruits this year than previous years . >> we have a recruit that is currently in the academy that is notice the decline in the quality of life issues in the city and recently his relative was a crime victim. he stated that was one of the number one reasons why he applied. >> reporter: he attributes the increase in interest to several factors. >> i think the wage increase has increased applicants to the police department. i also think the public perception has influenced how many people do apply. and i also think that

the conditions in the city and people want to make a difference has inspired people to become applicants. >> reporter: the police academy's goal is to have a total of 100 recruits by the end of 2024. the moment, they can meet it. happy valentine's day from the san francisco flower mart . there are powering the celebration in the city for lovers. business owners say costs for flowers and other valentine's day items are the highest they have ever seen. according to the national retail federation, shoppers will spend an average of $185 today. survey from wallet have found 46% of americans say inflation affects their valentine's day plans. are your romantic enough to spend $185 for your partner? a new cbs poll says, only a 2% of the people surveyed consider themselves romantic. 51% say they are somewhat romantic. at 31% say, no. not romantic

editor from cnet. good morning. we appreciate you talking to me. let's talk about the do knots when it comes to the apple vision pro. >> absolutely. there has been a lot of video circulating with people wearing the vision pro in public and first and foremost this is not a good idea because it can be a safety hazard. apple outlines this in his own safety information and says you should not be wearing the vision pro in areas where there is a risk of a collision. basically anytime there is something moving around you, weather that is an active roadway with cars and bicycles are people walking by. you should not be using the vision pro. in that environment. even though it may look like a visor, you don't really look through it the way you look through in normal pair of glasses. you have some cameras and sensors that are helping you stay aware of your environment, but not the same as looking through a pair of lenses. >> very good. and a pretty easy want to take about. let's move on to google. chatgpt

competitor has a new name. what is it called? do changes come with the name change? >> it is called gemini now. used to be called bald a the change was made to match the large language model that powers the app . there are not many other changes besides the name. google does have a lot of a.i. products and it can be kind of confusing to understand them all and understand how they are connected. the for this you had board and you had the gemini model and then you had duet a.i. which was their workspace tools and then you had to google assistant. this kind of rebrand helps unify everything which will make it easier for consumers t understand for sure. >> thank you for make it easier. we appreciate you so much. it's a cool and cloudy day for us in the bay area with onshore showers moving in

throughout the afternoon hours today. impacting a valentine's day forecast with hit or miss storms throughout the evening hours tonight. in total we can see close to 1/10 of an inch of rain in the north bay near bodgea bay and santa rosa. this is at 7:00 hour as many are trying to head to dinner reservations or enjoy a nice night for valentine's day. into the overnight we go and the showers taper off as a truck off to the east with windy conditions. we are left with drier conditions tomorrow, totaling close to around a quarter of an inch and half moon bay all the way into the east bay. we will get a dry break tomorrow heading into friday. if you had outdoor plans today that you wanted for valentine's day, those are the days to do it. this weekend, back-to-back atmospheric river events are starting to charge up in the pacific and we will pay close attention to that as we head into this weekend's forecast. this trough is building from the gulf of alaska and we are seeing strong areas of low pressure develop and those storm cells will move their way into the bay area and throughout california into

early next week. the weather prediction center showing up to eight inches of rain expected from now until that point, all the way into ben lomond and five or six inches in the north bay. this will be an impressive weekend when it comes to rainfall totals but back in the bay today, we are not seeing much this is a taste before the stronger storms move in later this week. daytime highs today with these cloudy, cool and wet conditions are topping up in the upper 50s lower 60s throughout the bay area. it is not that bad when it comes to temperatures and we will see a repeat throughout the rest of this week. despite the fact the storms are moving in from the gulf of alaska, they are not bring in bad weather. we hold on to the 60s and we see drier conditions tomorrow into friday. of the days to get prepared for this weekend or do any outdoor activities. once we head into this weekend of early next week, that is when we are talking about a chance of thunderstorm activities as early as monday heading into tuesday. a defeat none of us will forget. we had inside the 49

happy valentine's day. whether you're single or a no relationship there is always someone to love and to celebrate life with. this is a couple in tracy and they have cracked the code. 64 years strong with no end in sight. this is roger and linda. they found themselves in a chance encounter in 1959. linda was visiting her brother in hawaii and she decided to volunteer serving meals to navy sailors stationed at pearl harbor and there she met roger. >> this young lady walked in and i leaned over to my buddy who was another navy man. and i will marry that girl sunday.
