this is cbs news bay area with elizabeth cook. a deadly shooting in the crowds celebrating the chiefs' super bowl parade in kansas city. we are hearing from those caught in the middle of that chaos. it is a first alert weather day as rain returns just-in-time to disrupt the evening commute. even stronger storms are still ahead. thank you for joining us. we start with our first alert weather. if you drove to work today, be prepared for a went right home. meteorologist darren peck is checking the

forecast. >> there are three storms, three separate storms to talk about. this is storm number one and it is by far the easier of the three. that is live, first alert doppler. right on schedule, this system is giving the best of its rain as we head toward the evening commute. late afternoon and early evening, you can see how widespread this is. watch futurecast. pick up on where the cold front is. a little bit better organization. it has the potential to give you the better rain out of the whole day. getting down to the golden gate through 6:00 and working down to the south bay in the early evening, there will be some wind that accompanies this but nothing crazy. maybe you get 30 miles per hour gusts but this is not the storms of two weeks ago with intense wind and really pounding downpours. this rain comes to an end tonight and then we will be done. while

you will see in the 7-day forecast, there is a chance of a shower or two on wednesday. it would be the straggler. all day friday you will not get rained on. that is today's storm. there are two bigger ones coming our way. lookout in the pacific. you can see the first one out here. let's play this forward just to reel them in. here is the timing on these. we see very early saturday morning, we've got saturday's rain here and then we have sunday through perhaps tuesday for this system. this is the system that is still greatly in question in terms of how long it will stall out and how much rain it could deliver as a consequence of that. this will be the most difficult one in the forecast. let's take this one. we think of this as storm number two. watch that on saturday. from saturday morning, taking us all the way

throughout saturday, that system is with us. it gives us widespread steady rain for saturday . in terms of timing, we should think about this one as all day saturday. it will be difficult at this point to plan when there more be -- when there will be brakes. stay with us over the next couple of days. we will spotlight that and give you the details. for right now, it is an all-night rainmaker. 30 miles per hour gusts are requisite with all of these systems. this is that third and final system, the one that is a little more difficult. we are getting far down into the long-range. we are talking about a storm that could potentially be with us a week from today. even though it starts on sunday, there is the beginning of it. this will be late sunday. we get the leading edge of it. this has another

atmospheric river in it. it is pulling and a good amount of rain. watch what happens. when we hit play, it is not the leading edge of the rain. look at the center of the storm that is driving it. this will stall out and sit here. for the last couple of days, we will be living under the influence of that, which will be far more on-again, off-again showers. in no way will it rain consistently . most likely, it will be widespread steady rain sunday into monday and then second half of monday and tuesday, scattered showers. add the rainfall totals up and that is a wide range. much more on narrowing down the likelihood. there is a lot on here for the 7-day forecast. thursday and friday look good. here is your break. saturday is one system all day. sundays system is late sunday through monday and then scattered showers sticking around as late as wednesday. stay with us for continuing

arner out in the middle of it. >> a few minutes after the event had ended and people were filing out, thousands of people trying to walk out with their families when what appeared to be a string of fireworks shot off in the intersection of kessler and pershing, right up against the front of union station. people began to run as hard as they could in all directions. people knocked down, children knocked down. the police broke in. they ran into it, through the crowd and they ended up subduing at least two people. they have taken them into custody. >> i told everyone to get down and get out the way. officers were coming around. >> when we were heading left trying to get back and away from it, we saw the police swarm a stairwell and then we heard another pop from there. that is when we were gone. >> just minutes before the gunfire, the streets of kansas city packed with fans, cheering on the chiefs . the chiefs beat

the 49ers in the super bowl and as many as 1 million people showed up to watch that celebration parade but it quickly turned into chaos. taking a live look right now in kansas city, we say we are waiting for a news conference in the investigation continues. investigators have not released any information about a potential motive but we have heard from some sources telling cbs news that it might have stemmed from some sort of argument on the street that turned violent. they do not believe that it is related to terrorism. again, no confirmation on that officially. shortly after the shooting, chiefs quarterback patrick mahomes posted this message online saying, praying for kansas city. an update on deadly drug overdoses in san francisco. 66 people died in january. 80% of those involved fentanyl. the health department released these numbers today. this is down 21% from last january when 84 people died. city health leaders said they need easier access to methadone which can

reduce deaths by half. >> for instance, practicing physicians can write a prescription to treat pain but i can't write a prescription for methadone to treat opioid use disorder. similarly, it is far easier to get a prescription for ozempic than it is for methadone. >> federal rules are being rolled out later this year, making prescribing methadone easier. there is also a bill at the state capital that could cut some of the restrictions. protesters briefly blocked traffic. they are calling on the u.s. to stop providing military aid to israel. this comes after israel bombing of rafah in the gaza strip. no arrests reported there. in san jose, an apartment fire left seven adults out of their home and two small pets on oakmont drive. three of the people had minor injuries. the fire was mostly contained to one apartment and two other units had smoke damage. no word yet on the cause.
