our district did that overnight after last year and it was a good thing on our campus and we saw the reaction that our students had to having an sro. they were grateful. >> reporter: melissa agrees. she says students deserve to return to a normal life. >> they're facing the issues, but they want to move on with their lives and want to come to school and not have an active shooter or weapons or gangs. >> reporter: they agree something needs to be done as soon as possible to avoid another tragedy. >> the school district declined to comment on that arrest saying it had nothing to do with anything the student did at the school itself. i'm anne makovec with details on a huge weapons bust in the east bay, machine guns and 1 million rounds of ammunition all owned by a man who is legally barred from owning weapons according to the

5:07 pm
getting a little break today in the rain. as we check in with first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen, it's kind of the calm before the storms. >> yeah. calm between the storms because we had rain yesterday that was just kind of gentle rain compared to what we've had recently. we are in for much more rain as we head into presidents' day weekend. it's been a mix of clouds and sunshine over the bay area today. we do have the clouds turned on in our floor map as well, some patches in between those clouds, but very little shower activity. that changes as we head into presidents' day weekend as back-to-back atmospheric rivers, the channels of air that direct tons of moisture through the atmosphere overhead, they will soak the bay area, the first one arriving saturday is and the next one lining up in the pacific and will surge in on its heels sunday night and monday. we'll look at the radar simulation from futurecast in the background, but here also tracking hour by hour the amount of rain we'll see and the wind gusts with

these storm systems. we'll advance to when the first burst of wind and rain arrives. that's going to be saturday. we'll pick up a quick half inch to an inch of rain for most of the bay area. wind gusts will likely peak in the 20 to 30-mile-per-hour range. as we head into sunday night and monday, though, more rain will fall adding another half inch to an inch at that point in storm system's evolution with wind gusts over 30 miles an hour and monday afternoon peaking in the 35 to 40-mile-an-hour range. as the soil is saturated and the tree root systems can't grab onto that saturated soil, it's more likely we could see at least sporadic power outages as some trees come down monday and it looks like the rain continues into tuesday and lingering showers into next week. we'll look at the rest of the bay area and rainfall totals we expect through the duration of these systems coming up in a few minutes. we're less than three weeks away from primary elections here in california,

12th. raging waters in san jose could be making another big splash if city council approves a new plan to reopen it, this after officials say they found a new company to take over management of the water park. last year the water park did shut down after the last operator terminated its lease with the city. raging waters could reopen as soon as this summer if the plan is approved. oakland has a new home for professional baseball and it has nothing to do with the as. and a frightening explosion, what likely caused that blast. and a deputy opens fire on his own patrol vehicle with a handcuffed man inside, why it appears that an acorn is to blame.

a wild story out of florida, a deputy firing his weapon multiple times at a man inside a patrol vehicle after he mistakenly thought he had been shot. well, he was not hit. it turns out an acorn hit the patrol car and the deputy thought it was gunfire. he shot multiple times into the car and another deputy also fired their weapon. this happened back in november when officers got a call of a woman who reported her boyfriend was refusing to return her car. officers searched the man and detained him and put him in the back of that patrol car. miraculously the man was not hurt in that shooting. investigators say he was not armed. the deputy involved resigned from the force in december after an internal investigation found his use of force was not reasonable. surveillance video shows a

semi truck erupting into a big ball of fire. this happened in los angeles. the massive explosion sent at least nine firefighters to the hospital. two are in critical condition. it happened near the ports of l.a. and long beach as crews were putting out what they thought was just a routine vehicle fire. >> the unique aspect of this is that the truck was not powered by the usual fuel like diesel or gasoline. it was a clean air vehicle. it is powered by compressed natural gas or cng. so it had two 100-gallon tanks that are under 3,300 pounds of pressure and those tanks are mounted on each side of the vehicle to power it. >> officials say six minutes after the crews responded to the scene, one of those tanks did explode. the driver of the truck escaped before the explosion and is now cooperating with the investigation. here in the bay area just a sad morning, three people were killed in a crash on the bay bridge near treasure island. this was on the lower deck. this morning investigators say

look at conditions at palisades tahoe today, looks beautiful. the resort got a foot of snow over the last day. as we check in with first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen, beautiful to look at, pretty scary to drive in. >> right. trying to get up there will be challenging this weekend. tomorrow looks okay to travel. sunday might be okay while we're kind of in between these atmospheric rivers. after that they'll be adding up snow by the foot while we add up plenty more rain. let's look at what you need to know. we've got one more dry mild day tomorrow. savor it. it is short-lived. back-to-back atmospheric rivers for the weekend. storm one arrives saturday continuing into saturday evening. after a brief break the second stronger system moves in late sunday continuing into monday and even tuesday. localized flooding is possible with the amount of rain falling onto increasingly saturated soil. while the winds won't be as strong as the last powerful storm system, there will be enough wind energy some
5:17 pm
damage and sporadic power outages are going to be possible. let's track this on futurecast. we start tomorrow afternoon with plenty of clouds, but we're dry until after midnight friday night, light to occasional moderate rain showers to start the day saturday. heavier rain moves in saturday afternoon into the evening, but this will be fairly quick hitting, moving out and leaving lingering showers saturday night through the first half of sunday. it's not going to be raining everywhere. the second atmospheric river will start soaking the bay area heading through saturday afternoon, continuing sunday evening and sunday night. not only are the heavier downpours going to be with us longer, but the wind energy will increase as that system lingers in place. on our precipitation chances chart over the next seven days, you can see how long that system will linger in place, all the green towards the top of the scale, into tuesday before things finally taper off wednesday. how much rain are we talking about? let's look at
5:18 pm
the forecast amounts we expect. san jose is expecting a little over 1 1/2 inches of rain over the next five to seven days, could be as little as an inch, could be as much as 2 1/2 inches of rain even in the rain shadowed spots. inland in the east bay expecting generally around 2 to 2 1/2 inches of rain. concord could easily pick up 3 1/2 inches of rain. that's a lot of water. for san francisco the expectation is that 3 inches of rain, but the boom amount if we hit the jackpot is closer to 4 inches of rain. santa rosa, we're expecting almost 4 inches of rain, but again, if everything sets up where the downpours linger longer, we'll see more than 6 inches of rain becoming possible in the santa cruz mountains more than 8 inches of rain looking likely. talk about the wind energy aspects of the system, the wind picks up saturday, but it's a fairly brief burst of gusty
5:19 pm
winds not likely to cause significant damage. the winds calm down a little bit, but as the second atmospheric river moves in, we'll track stronger winds heading into sunday and sunday night with monday bringing some of the strongest winds overall, more gusts in the 30 to 40-mile-an-hour range, not as strong as 11 days ago, but still strong enough that wind damage, power line impacts are certainly possible and in the sierra while this first atmospheric river will add up to several inches of snow, a winter weather advisory in effect for them, it's going to be adding up feet of snow with that second atmospheric river moving in sunday and monday and lingering into tuesday. presidents' day i would not travel in that direction. let's bring in the seven-day outlook for the entire bay area, hardly any variation in temperatures. after another dry day tomorrow, there is plenty of rain in the forecast, saturday and sunday, monday rain and wind, more
