that could cost trump hundreds of millions of dollars in penalties. how will she go -- >> and history on the hardwood . iowa's caitlin clark takes her place in the college record books in jaw-dropping fashion. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. we start this morning with the busy week of court action involving former president donald trump. while two cases are playing out in new york, a hearing in atlanta could threaten the future of georgia's election interference case. fulton county d.a. fani willis returns to the witness stand this morning after her surprise and fiery testimony yesterday. at issue, whether a personal romance with a colleague presented a conflict of interest. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us here in new york with more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the d.a.'s lawyers did not want willis to testify. in fact, they tried to drop the subpoena for her to appear.

but willis was determined to defend her reputation and fight the allegations leading to drama in that georgia courtroom that is still simmering. >> it is a lie -- >> reporter: heated testimony as fulton county d.a. fani willis was grilled over her personal relationship with a lead prosecutor in the state's election interference case against former president donald trump. >> these people are on trial for trying to steal an election in 2020. i'm not on trial. >> reporter: co-defendant michael roman claims willis' previous relationship with prosecutor nathan wade is a financial conflict of interest and argues she should be removed from the case. willis and wade admitted to beginning a relationship after he was hired in 2021. they took lavish trips while willis' office paid wade $650,000 for his work on the case. willis said she reimbursed wade for costs of the trips. >> i don't need anything for a man. the only man who's ever foot my

bills completely is my daddy. >> reporter: willis' former friend testified that the relationship began earlier than november, 2021. >> you have no doubt that their romantic relationship was in effect from 2019 until the last time you spoke with her? >> no doubt. >> reporter: trump's georgia case could be further delayed if the judge decides to disqualify and remove willis. willis is expected to return to the courtroom today, but a ruling in the case is not expected this week. from trump and his team's perspective, the hearing only emboldens their argument that the four criminal cases against the former president are bogus. shanelle? >> so if the judge rules that there is a conflict of interest here, what happens to the case? >> reporter: well, both willis and wade could be dismissed from the case. then the state would have to find a new attorney who could either move forward with the charges or drop them altogether, or the case could be moved to another jurisdiction. any of these outcomes would just cause another delay with the presidential election just nine

months from now. shanelle? >> we'll keep a close eye on this story. naomi ruchim in new york, thank you so much. and we could find out today how much former president donald trump owes in his new york civil fraud case. trump, his family, and his businesses are accused of inflating the value of their properties to defraud banks and others. the state is seeking $370 million and restrictions on trump's real estate businesses. and trump was in a new york courtroom yesterday when a judge set a march 25th date for the start of his first criminal trial. trump has pleaded not guilty to falsifying business records to hide hush-money payments made back in 2016 to cover up alleged affairs. an fbi informant has been charged with lying to authorities about an alleged bribery scheme involving president biden, his son hunter, and a ukrainian energy company. federal prosecutors say while

mr. biden was running for president in 2020, alexander smirnov falsely told fbi agents that burisma executives paid the bidens $5 million each in 2015 or 2016. house republicans have used that claim as part of their impeachment inquiry into president biden. and we're learning new details today about what led to the mass shooting at the kansas city chiefs' super bowl parade as the community comes together to mourn. a vigil was held last night to show support to the victim and survivors. meanwhile, police say it started as an argument between several people. two teenagers remain in custody, and charges are expected to be announced later today. cbs' charlie demar has more from kansas city. >> reporter: as investigators now process a massive crime scene -- [ gunfire ] -- the people of kansas city are trying to process how a family-friendly super bowl

celebration destroyed so many lives in an instant. lisa lopez-galvan, local radio personality, was there with several family members. her son was shot, she was killed. >> there's an initial shock, and it feels like a bad dream. >> reporter: we spoke with her sister and brother. can you walk me through sort of the totality of how this impacts your family? >> our faith is what has helped us from the moment we knew. she brought us all together immediately. so how are we going get through this is together. >> reporter: the shooting victims include nine children. the youngest just 8 years old. >> we all train for this, we're all prepared to take care of these children. it does't negate the fact that it's still not normal for people to see many, many people wounded by gunshots. >> reporter: police are tightlipped about the two suspects still in custody. video shows one person with a gun being tackled by a group including trey filter. >> the entire time we were holding him down, people are yelling, he's got a gun, he's

got a gun, he's got a gun. when he was tackled the gun fell. >> reporter: the weapon a large semiautomatic rifle. this type of shooting now all too common. 60% of mass shootings occur in everyday places, churches, theaters, grocery stores, public celebrations. left behind another community struggling to heal. >> you hear about this nationally often, sadly, and no, we did not expect the day to end like this. >> reporter: and this shooting has so many families and communities talking about whether these large outdoor gatherings are safe. here in kansas city there were about 800 police officers for a million spectators who showed up to the parade. the mayor here in kansas city vowing to move forward, including hosting next month's st. patrick's day parade. charlie demar, cbs news, kansas city. and turning now to the middle east. israeli forces there have raided

the main hospital in southern gaza saying hamas held hostages there, and their remains could still be inside. we get details this hour from cbs' holly williams in israel. >> reporter: israeli special forces stormed nasser hospital, calling the operation precise. israel claims hamas held hostages at the hospital complex and says it found grenades and mortar shells during the raid. hamas denies using hospitals for military purposes. this man says two patients were killed in the attack, though we cannot confirm that. israel's also pressing ahead with plans to launch a ground assault in rafah where around 1.5 million palestinians are sheltering. israel says it will allow civilians to leave the battle zone, but the united nations has warned an offensive could lead to a slaughter.

muhammad and alia elbasyouni stayed in gaza city during four months of bombardment despite an israeli order to evacuate. they stayed put, they told us, because they were too elderly to leave on foot like thousands of others. their son is a u.s. citizen who lives in los angeles and helped design a robotic helicopter for nasa used on mars. >> had a heart condition, there was nobody to help him. he couldn't breathe. my mom thought he was dying. >> reporter: he was finally able to get them out of gaza last week, though on the first attempt they say their convoy of ambulances came under fire. were there many times when your mom and dad thought they wouldn't survive? [ speaking in a global language ] >> every minute. >> reporter: israel says it apprehended dozens of suspects in the hospital area, and it accuses some of them of taking part in the october 7th attack.

"the pittsburgh post-gazette" reports president biden will visit east palestine, ohio, today, one year after a train derailment. mr. biden promised to visit the small town near the pennsylvania line after norfolk southern train carrying toxic chemicals derailed. hazardous chemicals spilled from the train and caught fire. thousands of people were forced to evacuate their homes. and the "associated press" says greece is the first orthodox christian country to legalize same-sex civil marriage. the country's parliament approved the legislation last
