against him. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. former president and gop frontrunner donald trump was on the defensive all weekend after a judge ruled that he must pay hundreds of millions of dollars in a new york fraud case. nikki haley seized on the issue. cbs' naomi ruchim is joining me here now with the very latest on the campaign trail. good morning. >> good morning. here we are, just a couple months away for the election. a lot more going on. and trump's rivals are using the court ruling against him as ammunition, especially days out from another primary. but his allies believe all this courtroom drama is giving the former president a boost, with trump still leading by double digits in south carolina. last night, former president donald trump railed on social media against the legal cases he's facing, writing "these cases should all be thrown out." it came days after he was ordered by a new york judge to

pay more than $354 million in penalties after he was found liable for fraud after inflating the value of his assets. >> this is an interference ploy. >> reporter: trump is expected to appeal the decision which also bans him as serving as an officer or director of any new york corporation for three years. >> he said himself he's going to spend more time in a courtroom than on the campaign trail. we can't win like that. >> reporter: 2024 republican presidential candidate nikki haley blasted trump while campaigning over the weekend. >> we need to put the negativity and the baggage behind us. >> reporter: trump struck back at haley on social media last night claiming she, quote, doesn't have what it takes. also this weekend, the former president was met with a mix of boos and cheers at sneaker con in philadelphia where he unveiled his $399 custom sneakers. >> there's a lot of emotion in this room. >> reporter: trump has a rally planned in south carolina this friday with republican voters expected to head to the primary polls there the following day. new york law dictates an annual interest rate of 9% on what trump must pay the state. when you add that up, his legal fines now total more than half a billion dollars. the interest keeps accruing until the penalty is paid. the former president has less than 30 days to hand over the money or post a bond. anne-marie? >> it's going to be an interesting 30 days. thank you so much. >> thank you. onto the weather now. and millions of people in california are under flood warnings and watches right now as the state is being lashed with another massive storm. just check this out. torrential rain coming down yesterday in santa cruz. the rain is expected to continue all day today into the midweek. santa barbara county officials issued evacuation orders due to the risk of major flooding. landslides, flash floods, and

even tornadoes are all threats. the governor's office of emergency services activated its operations center to help deploy state, local, and federal response to any emergencies. the national weather service sys up to eight inches of rain is expected in some places. this storm is the latest in a series to pound the state this month. a minnesota community is mourning today after two police officers and a paramedic were shot and killed responding to a domestic call. dozens of people in the minneapolis suburb of burnsville gathered last night for a public vigil to honor the lives lost. jonah kaplan of cbs news minnesota has the latest on the investigation. i need an ambulance to -- stand by on the address. i need two additional ambulances. >> reporter: the call for paramedics came shortly after 5:00. minutes later dispatch ordered everyone to stay back. >> medics, please back off.

medics, back off and turn off lights. >> reporter: first responders rushed to the home in burnsville, a suburb about 20 minutes outside minneapolis. >> they were very tense. >> reporter: they say an armed man was barricaded inside along with his family. as police arrived, the man opened fire. video shows at least one s.w.a.t. vehicle with its windshield nearly shattered by bullets. >> several officers did return fire. i'll note that this individual had several guns and large amounts of ammunition. >> reporter: two 27-year-old officers from the burnsville police department were struck and killed. a paramedic who rushed to the aid of one of them also died in the shootout. >> they have to give up their life sometime, and they do it anyway. >> reporter: state investigators confirm the suspect died in the confrontation with police. however, family in the home made it out safely. >> seven children from ages 15 to 2 in the home. a troubling situation. and we're glad they aren't hurt as part of this.

>> reporter: there was a third officer hit and struck by gunfire. he was rushed to the hospital, too, but is expected to make a full recovery. jonah kaplan, cbs news, burnsville, minnesota. more than 400 people were detained in russia paying tribute to alexei navalny according to a prominent rights group. word broke out of the 47-year-old opposition leader's mysterious death at a remote arctic penal colony. russian prison officials said he felt sick after a walk and became unconscious. overnight his mother and lawyers said that they were told by russian investigators that they have not yet determined the cause of navalny's death. the longtime critic of russian president vladimir putin was serving a 19-year sentence on charges including extremism. navalny's wife shared a photo of the two of them on social media yesterday with the caption "i love you."

the u.n.'s top court holds historic hearings today into the legality of israel's 57-year occupation of the west bank land sought for a palestinian state. as for the war in gaza, the israeli military released new video after raiding nasser hospital in khan younis. they say it shows a stolen israeli car along with hamas vehicles used in the october 7th massacre. the army says it found unopened boxes of medication labeled with the names of hostages. the head of the world health organization said the hospital is no longer functional. cbs' holly williams has more on the bloodshed and a warning, some of this these images are graphic. >> reporter: at al aqsa hospital, the race to save lives never stops. in gaza, the bloodshed knows no age limits. israel has vowed to press ahead with a ground offensive in the city of rafah where around 1.5 million palestinians are now living.

most of them displaced and exhausted, many of them hungry. this young girl says she came to rafah after israeli tanks fired on a school where she was sheltering. israel says it will allow civilians to leave the battle zone, but the u.s. is warning against an assault without a credible plan to protect civilians. >> and now they're packed into rafah, exposed and vulnerable. they need to be protected. >> reporter: the u.s. is also pushing for a cease-fire, though negotiations seem to be stuck with israel calling hamas' demands delusional. while the u.s. is hoping for a two-state solution finally giving palestinians their own state in the west bank and the gaza strip, israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, said that his country, quote, rejects international dictates regarding an accord with the palestinians. some of israel's allies including the u.s. appear to be growing frustrated with its intransigence.

and domestically prime minister netanyahu is under intense pressure. in israel, what looked like the biggest anti-government protests since the war began, calling for netanyahu to resign. many here are angry at security failures on october 7th and his handling of the war. if israel does go ahead withon -- with an offensive in rafah despite mounting international criticism, it's these people who will suffer, including children who have already lost their innocence. "i've seen a father hold his daughter's hand while her body was cut to pieces," says this 15 -year-old girl. tennessee governor bill lee is condemning a neo-nazi march in nashville on saturday. small group of men carrying flags and swastikas as they walked around the state capitol and parts of town. police say the marchers appeared to be from out of town, and they left after being challenged by a group of vocal opponents. a cougar attacks cyclists ride along a trail, and new information in the deaths of two people in a colorado college. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the denver post" reports police have identified the two people shot and killed in a university of colorado at colorado springs dorm room. investigators say 24-year-old student samuel knopp and 26-year-old celie rain montgomery who was not a student were found dead on friday. police are calling the deaths homicides and do not believe it was a murder-suicide.

they're searching for the killer who they say most likely knew the victims. "the houston chronicle" says joel osteen's mega church in houston held its first service since last week's deadly shooting. thousands attended yesterday's special service at lakewood church. osteen said it was meant to celebrate a time of healing and restoration. police say a 36-year-old woman entered the church on february 11th with her 7-year-old son and opened fire. two people were wounded, including her son who was shot in the head. the woman was killed by security officers. and "the seattle times" says a cougar attacked five cyclists on a washington state trail. officials say a 60-year-old woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries in saturday's attack about 25 miles east of seattle. they say the cyclists were able to pin the cougar under a mountain bike until authorities arrived. fish and wildlife officers shot and killed the cougar. a search is under way for a second cougar seen in the area. still to come, cereal
