sanctions against the kremlin over alexei navalny's death. first, the countdown to south carolina. nikki haley refusing to quit while gop frontrunner and former president donald trump is already declaring victory. well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. with just three days until south carolina's gop primary, former president trump is holding onto a commanding lead against nikki haley in her own state. despite the gap, haley says she's not going anywhere, while her former boss continues to claim he's the victim of political persecution. cbs' jarred hill is joining us from new york with the details on what's going on. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. in a campaign speech last night nikki haley said that voters deserve a real choice, not a soviet-style election where there's only one candidate. so she's staying in. even though some of the latest polling out of south carolina has her trailing trump nearly two to one.

>> you're not supposed to lose your home state. >> reporter: former president donald trump in a fox news town hall yesterday claimed an early victory in saturday's south carolina primary against the state's former governor nikki haley. >> she's losing it big. >> i'm not going anywhere. >> reporter: instead, haley says she's planning to campaign in several states ahead of super tuesday, less than two weeks away. and she's sharpening her critique of her onetime boss. >> he's gotten more unstable and unhinged. he spends more time in courtrooms than he does on the campaign trail. >> reporter: as the former president battles a slew of legal challenges, last night he likened a ruling by a new york judge that he pay more than $300 million in a civil fraud case to the death of russian opposition leader alexei navalny who died in a prison colony last week. >> it is a form of navalny, it is a form of communism or fascism. >> reporter: before heading to california tuesday, president biden was asked if he'd prefer either candidate in november. >> i don't care.

crackdown is coming. >> i told you we'd be announcing sanctions on russia. we'll have a major package announced on friday. >> reporter: the move comes just days after russian authorities announced the death of famed opposition leader alexei navalny who had appeared perfectly healthy in a virtual court hearing the day before. navalny's mother showed up at the gates of the arctic penal colony where he was imprisoned. "they don't give me his body," she said, "and they don't even tell me where it is." hundreds of russians have now been arrested simply for mourning navalny's death. among them, a 33-year-old russian american woman from l.a. detained in the central russian city of yekaterinburg. she's facing up to 20 years in prison after donating $50 to a pro-ukrainian group. >> i am in shock. >> reporter: her

multimillion dollar bribery scheme involving president biden, his son hunter, and a ukrainian energy company. two men have been charged with murder in last week's deadly shooting after the kansas city chiefs' super bowl parade. court documents released yesterday said lyndell mays and dominic miller began firing at each other after getting into an argument. one woman was killed in the gunfire last wednesday, and 22 others were injured. the suspects were also both shot in the melee, and they remain hospitalized. breaking overnight now, syrian state tv says two people were killed in an israeli strike that hit a residential building near an iranian school in the capital of damascus. it comes as the u.s. middle east envoy is heading back to the region to try and advance a cease-fire and hostage release deal. the u.s. vetoed an arab-backed resolution demanding an immediately humanitarian cease-fire saying it would interfere with negotiations. meantime, israeli prime minister

benjamin netanyahu says israel would not pay any price for the return of hostages despite growing international pressure to end the war. the world food program says that it has temporarily halted food deliveries to isolated northern gaza because of increasing chaos across the territory, raising fears of potential starvation. and qatar's foreign ministry said that it had confirmation that hamas started delivering medications to the hostages a month after the meds arrived in gaza. and now to the latest atmospheric river event walloping california. finally a dose of good news. while there's still a threat of flooding in much of the saturated state, the pounding rain and powerful winds, they are dying down and moving out. it's leaving a mess to clean up. cbs' jonathan vigliotti reports from hard-hit area of south los angeles. >> reporter: another day of pounding rain, and those who live on southern california hillsides have had enough. >> what's typically happened the

last year is unprecedented. >> reporter: less than a decade ago this land in the coastal city of rancho palos verdes barely moved. now the whole community has seen the ground shift up to ten feet in one year. >> i mean, there's been a lot of movement in the area. i've seen the road change daily, cracks that you didn't see before suddenly, you know, are appearing. >> reporter: it's not just one storm but a winter full of extreme storms. los angeles now on pace to break a february record. at the same time, the world keeps breaking temperature records. the warmer air holds more moisture leading to heavier rainfall, a result of human-caused climate change. today nearly the entire state of california is dealing with at least one weather alert. millions face a flood warning. these areas are under a winter storm warning. and most of the coast is being inundated by high surf. dangerous waves are causing coastal flooding and beach erosion. and dramatic rescues. these two people were trapped by

rising floodwaters. both placed into safety. the storm impacting every resident. those who have to drive through thousands of potholes to those whose homes have already been lost in the nearly 600 mudslides. and these residents concerned, they may be next. you've lived in southern california your whole life. does it scare you? do you worry? >> i do. >> reporter: this home has sunken several feet. officials saying at least 400 homes are threatened. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, rancho palos verdes. the trial of the armorer on the set of the movie "rust" is set to begin today in new mexico. prosecutors say hannah gutierrez reed is to to blame for the live ammunition that ended up in a prop gun in 2021. they are expected to tell a jury she used drugs and was likely hung over the day of the incident. actor alec baldwin was holding the gun that shot and killed cinematographer halyna hutchins.

a popular youtube parenting expert is sentenced to prison for child abuse. and a heartbreaking discovery in the search for a missing girl. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the houston chronicle" reports the body of missing 11-year-old texas girl was found in a river. audrii cunningham was last seen thursday morning as she left for school. her family reported her missing after she did not come home. her body was found in a river north of houston yesterday. prosecutors say they will charge 42-year-old don steven mcdougal with capital murder. he lived in a trailer behind the family home and admitted to leaving with the girl on her way to school. "the denver post" says the student accused of killing two people in a dorm room at university of colorado colorado springs was the roommate of one of the victims. 25-year-old nicholas jordan made his first court appearance yesterday on murder charges. his roommate, samuel knopp and celie rain montgomery, were found shot to death on friday. montgomery was not a student,

the nasdaq lost 144, and the s&p 500 dropped 30 points. you'll now pay more to check bags if you fly on american airlines. as of tuesday the fee went from $30 to $35 for your first checked bag on domestic flights if paying on line or $40 if passengers pay at the airport. for a second checked bag it's now $45 both on line or at the airport. the airline says it's the first time they've increased baggage fees since 2018. target is teaming up with iconic designer diane von furstenberg for a special collaboration. the limited edition collection will include more than 200 items including the brand's iconic wrap dresses, accessories, beauty, and home decor. most items will cost less than $50 except for furniture. it will be available starting next month. and would you like a big mac and fries with your next manicure? mcdonald's is getting into the beauty business. the fast food chain is partnering with nails, inc., to launch mcdonald's inspired nail products.
