and touchdown. a u.s. spacecraft makes history on the moon. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the south carolina republican primary takes place tomorrow, and it could be nikki haley's last stand in her quest to be the gop presidential nominee. the former governor of south carolina faces an uphill battle against donald trump. but haley is vowing to campaign through super tuesday. cristian benevides is in columbia, south carolina. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. nikki haley remains defiant despite growing calls from trump and his allies for her to drop out. still, she has a tough road ahead with polling showing her trailing former president trump by about 30 points in her own home state. former president donald trump and former south carolina

governor nikki haley facing off this saturday in her home state. >> this is the time south carolina can really step up. >> reporter: on the campaign trail yesterday, haley touted a poll showing she has a better chance of defeating president biden than trump. >> donald trump can't win a general election. look at any of the polls. >> reporter: but heading into this saturday's contest, trump has a commanding lead over haley among likely gop voters. >> trump so far ahead of her. she has no chance. >> if you don't carry your home state you're going to have a tough time winning down the road. >> reporter: haley has faced scrutiny over comments regarding an alabama supreme court ruling which granted frozen embryos used in in vitro fertilization the same rights as children. >> we need to make sure that embryos are protected. i personally believe an embryo is a baby. >> reporter: in battleground michigan, vice president kamala harris also addressed the ivf decision braming -- blaming

former president trump. >> the previous president of the united states was clear in his intention to handpick three supreme court justices who would overturn the protections of roe v. wade. that's what got us to this point. >> i took historic action to protect the unborn. >> reporter: yesterday in tennessee, trump did not address the ivf ruling. south carolina has an open primary, so nikki haley is counting on more moderate voters to turn out to help her pull off an upset. anne-marie? >> cristian benevides in south carolina. thank you so much. well, former president trump is asking a federal judge to dismiss criminal charges accusing him of mishandling classified documents after leaving office. trump has pleaded not guilty to a 40-count indictment accusing him of illegally retaining national security documents at his florida resort and obstructing government efforts to retrieve them. his lawyers claim he's immune from prosecution because he was president when the classified information was moved. the treasury department

plans to announce hundreds of new sanctions on russia today. the penalties come as the world prepares to mark two years since russia invaded ukraine. the sanctions are also in response to the death of vladimir putin's most prominent critic. president biden met with his widow yesterday. nancy cordes has more on that. >> reporter: the pictures show president biden embracing and sitting with alexei navalny's widow and daughter in a san francisco hotel room one week after navalny's suspicious death in a russian penal colony. >> he was a man of incredible courage. it's amazing how his wife and daughter emulate that. >> reporter: navalny's daughter is a student at stanford university. her mother flew to california to comfort her after meeting with european leaders and vowing to carry on her husband's work. by killing alexie, putin killed half of me, she said. in russia, navalny's mother said that she had finally been taken

to a morgue to see the body. she was told he died of natural causes and said that she was being pressured to hold a private burial ceremony as russian police try to head off more protests over his death. "they want it done secretly," she said. "i don't agree with that." a defiant putin flexed his muscle flying on a nuclear capable strategic bomber even as the u.s. and its allies prepare to unveil new sanctions aimed hobbling his military. at a california fundraiser president biden called putin a, quote, crazy s.o.b. putin shrugged it off in an interview with state tv. "we understand what is happening there from a domestic political point of view," he said, "and this reaction is absolutely adequate." we're now getting a sense of the scope of the sanctions president biden will announce on friday. cbs news has learned the sanctions will target nearly 600

banks, companies, and individuals both inside russia and outside it. nancy cordes, cbs news, los angeles. four men have been charged in connection with a ship that was intercepted by the u.s. navy last month. they're suspected of transporting iranian-made weapons in the arabian sea. two navy s.e.a.l.s died trying to board that ship. david martin has more. >> reporter: the four were arrested after navy s.e.a.l.s boarded this vessel off the coast of somalia and found missile parts including a warhead the u.s. says were being smuggled from iran to the houthis in yemen. two navy s.e.a.l.s, petty officers chris chambers and gage ingram, were lost at sea while attempting to board in rough seas. the boarding occurred last month on the same date the u.s. and britain launched its first round of strikes against houthi targets in germany. strikes which have yet to put an end to attacks against commercial shipping.

>> we've certainly seen in the past 48, 72 hours an increase in attacks from the houthis. >> reporter: the criminal complaint says the four suspects carried pakistani identification cards and that the alleged captain had a satellite phone in which he communicated with a member of iran's revolutionary guards. after the ship was searched and cargo discovered the crew was taken aboard the "uss polar" and transferred to jail in richmond, virginia. four charged with crimes, and eight others held as material witnesses. the u.s. coast guard has since intercepted another ship carrying arms to yemen. >> we know that the houthis maintain a large arsenal. they are very capable. they have sophisticated weapons, and that's because they continue to get them from iran. >> reporter: david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. a former fbi informant charged with lying about a multimillion dollar bribery

scheme was arrested. alexander smirnov was taken into custody in las vegas two days after he was released on bond. prosecutors say he was a flight risk. smirnov's claims are a essential part of house republicans' impeachment inquiry into president biden. two more fertility clinics in alabama have paused in vitro fertilization treatments, sending patients scrambling to make other plans. it comes after the state supreme court ruled that frozen embryos have the same rights as children. the clinics cited the legal risks in the wake of the ruling. on wednesday the university of alabama at birmingham health system said it was pausing ivf treatments, as well. cellphone service for at&t customers is restored after a widespread outage. the company is blaming a technical error, not a malicious attack. yesterday users reported problems from chicago to boston -- rather dallas to los angeles. at&t says the disruption

"the anchorage daily news" reports a jury in alaska convicted brian smith on all

counts in a double-murder trial. the jury convicted smith on two counts of first-degree murder and multiple counts of sexual assault. he recorded the violent death of one woman in 2019 on his cellphone. he was arrested after a woman stole the cellphone from his truck and discovered the gruesome video. during a police interrogation, smith confessed to killing another woman in 2018. "the houston chronicle" says the texas judge ruled that a black high school student's long hair is not protected by a new state law. 18year-old darryl george wears his hair with twisted locks on the top of his head. he's been suspended since august for violating the school district's policy limiting the length of boys' hair. georgia's attorney argued his hairstyle is protected by the state's crown act which prohibits race-based hair discrimination. yesterday a judge ruled in favor of the school district which said its policy does not violate the law. and "the atlanta journal-constitution" says a

intuitive machines' six-legged robot lander touched down near the moon's south pole. it's also the first time a private company has pulled off a lunar landing on. board are six experiments from nasa. the spacecraft blasted off from florida last week on a spacex rocket. new layoffs in the media industry, and reddit plans to launch an ipo. shanelle kaul has our cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: both the dow and the s&p 500 surged to record highs thursday after nvidia's earnings sparked an ai rally. the dow gained 456 points, topping 39,000 for the first time. the nasdaq was up 460, and the s&p 500 gained 105 points. "vice media" is laying off several hundred staff members. in a memo sent to staff on thursday, it says it will no longer publish material on its

he's insisted that he is innocent and will be tried later. meantime, the defense argued gutierrez-reed was being rushed the day of the shooting and had to perform two jobs. she's pleaded not guilty to several charges including involuntary manslaughter. former talk show host wendy williams has been diagnosed with the same form of dementia as actor bruce willis. a statement released by her care team says the 59-year-old was diagnosed last year with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. the mayo clinic says the conditions impact communication, personality, behavior, and language. and bravo tv host andy cohen is apologizing after a "real housewives of beverly hills" star, brandi glanville, accused him of sexual harassment. in a letter sent to nbc universal, warner bros., and other media companies, glanville's attorneys wrote that cohen sent her a video in 2022 in which he appeared inebriated.
