2:08 am
vowing to do the same. >> reporter: this san jose baker was excited when she got a notification that elon musk went on x to say tesla wanted to do right by the bay area. >> we should always count on tesla trying it best. >> reporter: she said she'll wait and see if tesla follows through because she's had an up and down relationship with the electric car maker. >> we're trying to refill, refill, refill. >> reporter: it started when tesla placed a $16,000 order for her sweet mini pies for a black history event. >> i was excited to work with them. >> reporter: but just a few days later, tesla abruptly canceled. >> she sent another text saying sorry, we're not going to do, we're not going to need this order. i appreciate your support. and that was that. yeah. yes, very heartless to me. >> reporter: but it gets worse. she had already paid for the
2:09 am
extra ingredients, scheduled the staff to work overtime, and turned down other business. >> it's a big order, so i turned down three inquiries for black history month events to be able to do the job for them. they don't even see that. like, it's lost revenue for me. they don't care. >> reporter: people started talking, and once the story got out, customers started streaming in. there were lines out the door from people who wanted to support the small bakery that was snubbed by a business giant. >> we're here to support since tesla screwed up, and, um, that wasn't right to put in a large order like that, and then all of the sudden change their mind. it's a small business. i'm sure it's her livelihood. >> it touched me. how a business has to, um, source materials, pay up front many,
2:10 am
many thousands of dollars, and then they do not get reimbursed. >> reporter: the publicity is turning things around. so many orders are now coming in, some from across the country. >> my head was spinning from all the support. it's just incredible. i feel blessed. i feel like wow. >> reporter: she says it's starting to make up for what was lost revenue-wise. she now knows she has a bigger and more loyal customer base that she can count on long after the tesla tory blows over. from one kind of a business to another, when you're shopping and have no idea what to buy, having an employee help you every step of the way might feel like vip treatment. but that's what it's like for everyone who steps foot in one san francisco hardware store. the new personal shopper program isn't meant to bring
2:11 am
customers in, it's about keeping thieves out. >> all the red things are locks. it's just like everything is locked up. >> reporter: sam black has worked at frederickson hardware for over 20 years. he says he's never witnessed the kind of brazen shoplifting his store has experienced over the last few months. >> it was still locked, but just grabbing it and breaking the, um, the peg board and taking whole displays and ripping the whole thing off. so we had to put oak on top to slow it down. >> reporter: frederickson's is a neighborhood staple. it's been here since 1896. but in the last few weeks it's looking more like a vault than the casual supply store that's always been. sam says after a string of they wants, the store decided to implement a new policy. customers now have to wait at the front to be helped, and then are escorted through the store by an employee to
2:12 am
find what they want to purchase. >> it's kind of something we've never done before. i mean, even during covid we never had to do it like this. but each customer comes in, and we just kind of assist them throughout the whole process. >> reporter: sam says it's been tough. doing things like this has not only frustrated some loyal customers, it's also taken away sales of items customers may have purchased if they were able to browse through the store alone. but sam says at this point, the store has no other choice. >> it's just been lawlessness. yeah, nothing is stopping them from stealing. and with the felony thing being so high, i've never seen anything like this. not even close. >> reporter: thankfully sam says the new policy is working. they haven't had any big incidents since the change. still, he hopes one day soon they can all just get back to the way things used to be. >> i just want it to be boring and normal. >> sam told us the shop plans

>> spacecraft, they're just like us. okay, that's about as profound as we come here. let's look at what's happening weather-wise heading into the last weekend of february. finally we're in for a mostly dry weekend. there is a storm system hanging out, but it's somewhere loitering offshore. it's not in a big hurry to move. and this is just going to remain almost stationary over the next 36 to 48 hours. there will be some cloud cover on sunday, but i think any chance of showers will hold off until after sunset sunday evening, and more likely after midnight sunday night. short term, some clouds streaming through the skies. temperatures dropping at a leisurely pace. mid-40s and mid to upper 50s at the moment. everybody will even out throughout the rest of tonight. temperatures by saturday morning starting off in the 40s across the board. anywhere from the low 40s to the upper 40s for warmer spots, but even the chilliest locations i think stay out of the 30s. then temperatures tomorrow will be the warmest we see for awhile.
