demonstrations across cbs news bay area, the country and the world marking two years of the war in ukraine. good evening i am andrea nakano, tonight the chinese lunar new year parade took over downtown cbs news bay area, huge crowds filled the streets all over downtown, for the largest lunar new year parade outside of asia. it all kicked off at market and second, snaking 1.3 miles through the city past union square and through chinatown, it was all in celebration of the year of the dragon, the most popular of the 12 yet zodiac animals, da lin was out soaking in the sights and the sounds and the emotion. >> reporter: the chinese new year parade started off with a bang. actually a lot of bang. to ward off evil spirits and bring in good fortune. -- not

just the biggest outside of asia but perhaps one of the most colorful and loudest parades. maria pereira loves it, she has attended almost every single one since 1992. >> enjoying the different culture and embracing the tradition and the color and the mystery of the culture. it is fascinating and uplifting. >> reporter: this year she brought her kids and her friends kids, the kids were amazed the sights and sounds. -- so many dragons, baby dragons, green haired dragons, purple dragons, even a glowing wooden dragon. organizers says there's a 288 feet long

golden dragon. -- which one was your favorite? >> i like the pink one in the purple one. >> reporter: in the chinese culture, dragon is the most popular of the 12 zodiac animals. >> year of the dragon is inspirational, just like looking up at the sky because it is a mythical creature. >> prosperity, power and strength. >> it is magical. >> reporter: many hope the new year will bring wealth, success and good health. >> a lot of good luck signs and prosperous, looking forward to a positive new year. >> reporter: organizers hope the parade will be one more way to help revitalize downtown cbs news bay area, after all the event is a celebration of the chinese community and its contributions to the city. >> we are excited to be here and we are excited that it's not pouring rain. >> reporter: unlike last year, the nice weather brought out tons of thousands of people to line up around the route, organizers say they have 19 floats and 122 groups marching through the city.

>> everything is so colorful, each one has their own energy, the school bands, the kids and the dragons. give that a try everybody. >> reporter: one more day of festivities, the community street there will be held in san francisco, chinatown on sunday, from my family to yours -- [ speaking in a global language ] >> he can say that much better than i can. the little marchers are from garfield elementary school. it is a chance for students of all at the cities to make the cultural connection and get the fun experience of working as a team, on a big stage. and of course, it would not be lunar new year without the sounds of the fireworks, ringing out over chinatown. emily still some going off as we speak. one thing that has died down as we

take a look at the bare area bridges at this hour is the traffic, we saw some pretty big backups both before and after the parade and as we can see now, everything appears to be running smoothly. sending it over to meteorologist jessica burch, who's filling in for darren tonight. it sounds like they're ours some rain tonight. >> we will see a big shift in the forecast for us, tomorrow heading into a money forecast. take a look at current temperatures, the city of cbs news bay area, wrapping up all of the chinese new year festivities. sitting in the upper 50s, and 40s often the east bay. we do have a storm just off shore, that will bringing in a series of showers as we head into early next week. now this comes in late sunday night, early monday morning, that will invite the morning commute as many of us try to get to work or school, i will be there that morning what that forecast and showers rolling the way in. we will gear up for more heavy showers which we will talk about and

just a little bit. back to you. -- in other news, demonstrators in cbs news bay area, marking two years since russia invaded ukraine. we saw massive crowds across europe today as well. thousands of people coming out in major capitals like budapest, bucharest and berlin. max darrow sat down with an official from ukraine, to find out what it's like on the ground right now, as ukraine enters its third year at war. -- >> reporter: a show of support for ukraine in cbs news bay area on saturday. marking two years since russia's full-scale invasion began. and the day marks one year, since the war took away a member of antchka cheberenchyk's family. >> one year since my cousin was killed during the war. so, it is so heartbreaking and i believe the war is supposed to

do something. they are supposed to say something. >> reporter: she was there at the rally on saturday hoping to remind people here, that there is still a brutal war ongoing. >> it is so sad that it is two years and people are starting to forget, but my people in my country, they are suffering. >> reporter: dmyto kushneruk is the counsel general of ukraine in san francisco. >> the situation in ukraine is difficult, it has become more difficult than it was to some extent because of the lack of the necessary support from the west recently. >> reporter: over the last two years, the u.s. has provided a steady stream of aid to ukraine, billions of dollars of support. the latest round of eight, a $60 billion package is stuck in congress. it passed the senate with bipartisan support but house republicans have refused to bring it up for a vote. >> every day was a delay of the building passed in congress, it means more lives being lost. we don't want to get deep into

american politics, it is not for us to do. but we will always be proud of that ukraine had bipartisan support and we will need in the future. >> reporter: the california national guard showing support for ukraine on saturday as well. flying ukraine's flag alongside california's line in a special ceremony. -- we have quite a ukrainian population in the bay area that has grown since this began. correct the market >> it has grown, and we assume that about 30,000 have come to california and about five or 6000 have come to the bay area. >> reporter: antchka cheberenchyk is here thousands of miles away from the war and she says this is a fight for freedom. >> we are fighting for our ukrainian people to exist. and in the world. i believe that the world has to speak, too, it's not fair for ukrainian people, and it's not fair for any people, that someone will

tell you what you should do, in your own land, in your own house, it is not right. >> reporter: she says this shouldn't be happening in 2024. >> students staff and community members can together at stanford's campus proudly displayed the blue and yellow and rallying for ukraine. speaker chuck on ukrainian culture and identity while honoring the lives lost. coming up next, people in oakland will get a chance to meet and ask questions of the candidates for the new police chief, more than a year after laurent armstrong was fired. we will stay in town and see how fans of the oakland a's celebrated the start of a new season after the team skipped out on organizing an official fans fest.

a new development in oakland's saga to find a new police chief, the police commission making the candidate search public, there will be an open forum next week where committee members can come watch and potentially participate in the interview process. it has now been more than a year since the mayor fired the chief then laurent armstrong over handling's of officer misconduct. the mayor rejected a list of three finalists that the commission gave her. antioch's new interim police chief set to start on monday.

the previous chief retired in august, and antioch pd has been the subject of an ongoing fbi investigation into racist and home homophobic behavior, about half the department put on paid leave, and that all started before ford took over the department in late 2022. is turning out to the weather, surprisingly warm saturday, across the bay area, we got plenty of people out in sunnyvale soaking in the rare mild temperatures in february, let's check on the forecast with meteorologist jessica burch, who was in for darren tonight. jessica? >> let's take a quick look, i haven't been over here in so long at this wall, that i didn't catch that and my apologies for that, let's take a look at what is happening around the corner. and into early next week, we mentioned earlier we have a splash of showers as we head into monday morning. not impact in the morning commute by any means, it might be a little bit inconvenient but it is light rain. amounting to about a 10th

of an inch. we will dry up on tuesday as we gear up for heavier showers. let's time that out from now all the way until next week. as we head into this weekend, tomorrow will look a bit different today, today was gorgeous with sunny skies and mild temperatures. we will see an increase of clouds as we see showers moving in from the south, heading into our monday forecast that ramps up in the south bay by a smidge more, in those early afternoon hours. it will be inconvenient heading into our lunchtime forecast all the way into the evening hours and will sweep to the south. and clearing conditions as we head into tuesday and wednesday. here's the storm that we are talking about for the early week once we had into the late portions of next week, a huge storm from the gulf of alaska starts building its way in, it will impact the pacific northwest bringing on snow and rain widespread throughout the region, as we had all the way into our forecast, friday into saturday next weekend is going to look a lot different compared to what we have had so far this weekend, we had heavier showers offshore, long-range models showing about an inch on average throughout the bay and that will last throughout next

week. taking a step back and looking at what is happening tomorrow. tomorrow will look like a beautiful set up, talking about upper 60s down in the south bay, putting us a little bit above average for this time of year. light winds moving in from offshore and speaking of offshore, just along the coastline we will see upper 50s near stinson beach, most 50s under the north bay, take a look at the next seven days, this will paint over the good picture as we look into early next week with a little bit of showers rolling in on monday. like i said impacting that morning commute, drying up in the morning afternoon, with dry conditions on tuesday and wednesday, widespread brother bay area whether you live along the north bay arley donna to the santa clara valley where the sunshine will last until wednesday, heavier showers rolling in on thursday. that will stretch into early next week am i too, so a little bit of a dry break, take advantage of it while we have it, but once we had into a next week and early next weekend, that is when we will see those showers really ramping up, we will keep you updated on that forecast and we will send it back over to you. that time of year, spring training underway for the 2024

mlb season, this time of year is also usually when the oakland a's host a celebration for the fans to mark the start of the new season but this year, they decided not to, so instead the fans throughout themselves, john ramose was there. >> reporter: all across the country, baseball fans celebrity the dawn of a new season but here in oakland, they are conflicting emotions almost as if remaining in a span has become an active defiance. the sign outside the coliseum, says rooted in oakland since '68, dan was there when it was first planted. >> my mom and dad took one of my sisters and my brother and i to the very first game in 1968 and south set out in right field. >> reporter: that is why it hurts him so much in the nasty fight to move the team from

oakland, the oakland a's have planned no celebration for the fans. >> here we are as fans, waiting if we are going to have fans fest or not, oakland management says no, we are not. here is the power of the fan, we will do it ourselves. >> reporter: it was called fans fest, with an s, to show it was a collective effort. partnering with a dive bar to raise $40,000 to put on the event. >> i guess that shows there's a market for professional sports in oakland. despite what you might hear. >> reporter: the oakland a's have been telling major-league baseball that the fancier are lacking, which at this event made president dave cavil, and owner john fisher the target of a lot of anger. fisher states with attached to the door of each port-a-potty and one tooth portrayed him dressed as a cloud. >> we are going to have a little contest, to pin the nose on the cloud. >> we can chant at the team only want but i don't think it's going to happen. this is all we have, to hold onto it at

this point, is that john fisher will end up messing this up so bad that he will be forced to sell. >> reporter: most think that is unlikely, so others are moving on. paul friedman wants to keep baseball in town, so he and a group of friends out of the oakland maulers, an independent team, that will begin playing take games in the spring, he's confident that oakland fans will turn out. >> it is the only fan base that when you refer the team, you root for the town, the chances let's go oakland and i think that says something about the fan base. >> let's go oakland! >> what this event proves -- is that don't count oakland out! like this to be whatever we make it and we have the best fans to partner with in the world. >> reporter: he is one of them but he says he doesn't think you'll ever be able to route 40 oakland a's again, and you can tell how hard that will be, by the pain in his voice. >> some people go, well maybe i will see them on the road. you

know, not in vegas. i wouldn't even do that. -- it is going to be hard, you know. it hurts. it really hurts. >> reporter: so the oakland fans fest wasn't about the a's at all. it was about the fans who had shown loyalty over the years, to a team that is not returning the favor. >> so many fans there today, one of the fans fest main sponsors pulled their support, just three days before the event, the oakland a's insisted they had nothing to do with the decision and drinks is not said anything about why they did it. but five other local breweries stepped up in the absence. matt, over to you now. coming up in sports, giants in the field for the first time in 2024, hoping the game result will be better than the off-season. plus, who said there's no brawling in basketball, the timberwolves flared with the warriors, and tremont is airing it out.

bob melvin here for the san francisco giants has officially begun the team in the field for the first time this season and they were hopeful that their play on the field would be better in the off-season, which left for a lot to be desired. down in southern sunny scottsdale, logan webb on the mound, finishing second last season and in the first facing patrick wisdom, with the first frame for web and then trouble in the second, runners in scoring position. they find the whole . a two run score, the cubs have the early, chicago went on to win 8-4 and the giants dropped

their first spring training game. steve curry is liking a saturday night. the warriors handed him a two-year contract extension, it is worth 17 1/2 million dollars, it makes it read just nba coaching contract in history, good timing because kurt opened up his wallet to pay for the fines of one of his players that is set to receive a little letter from the league. the warriors made using easy work but it came with timbers late in the game, with the shot clock. they went for the basket. that made myles bridges unhappy but that grant williams got in the match. steve curry was confused and the shot clock was still on. despite that, williams were both ejected. and draymond grain didn't miss an opportunity to air out trent williams after the fireworks. >> if you are winning by 13 points would you get mad of you laid a ball up i doubt it. and so it is kind of like a sore loser type thing. but grant williams has to stop it. he

bay. mls and its 2024 season opened up and the clays were eager to hit the field. starting off in the lone star state, the earthquake sticking on fc dallas and it didn't take long for san jose to silence the home crowd, in the 60 minute, they get the rebound and the first goal of the regular season. the earthquakes led 1-0 early but after tying up in the first half, fc dallas on the attack and dante seeley bears the go-ahead goal, they won 2-1, a heartbreaker for the earthquakes. to the nhl, the sharks hosting a predators as it's been for san jose, the home crowd is not going to go home happy. keeper sherwood finds the back of the neck, his first of two goals and again, the predators to go on to win 4-2, the sharks will go host jersey on tuesday. college hoops, in the final minute, the bears up by three,

there is much more celebrating to do this weekend as thousands of people expected in oakland tomorrow to celebrate black history month. at the annual black joy parade, the founder says she was inspired to create the event during protest for the occupy and black lives matter movements. >> we are super excited to announce that we are going to have lack cultural zoning come back, so that is extremely exciting. we are also doing a block house pop-up, which is similar to silent disco, games and girls is another one coming up with a whole new way to % super excited about that. >> if you want to take part in the celebrations, all of the fun kicks off at noon tomorrow.
