late yesterday another blow for nikki haley. a prominent conservative group founded by the billionaire koch brothers announced it will no longer spend on her presidential campaign. haley is standing firm on her promise to stay in the race through super tuesday and will spend the next few days on the campaign trail. 2024 presidential hopeful nikki haley was already back on the campaign trail in michigan, a day after former president trump donald trump claimed victory in her home state of south carolina. >> you can't have a candidate who's going to win a primary who can't win a general. >> reporter: haley will rally again today in the great lakes state ahead of tomorrow's primary. afterwards, she plans to barnstorm through multiple states leading up to next week's super tuesday. >> i have never seen the republican party so unified as it is right now. >> reporter: with his palmetto state win, trump is one step closer to the gop nomination, but he's facing criticism over

racially charged comments at a black conservatives gathering last week. >> we've all seen the mugshot, and you know who embraced it more than anybody? the black population. >> reporter: a biden campaign spokesman called those comments, quote, insulting and moronic. president biden is also on the ballot in michigan tomorrow. his surrogates honed in on abortion rights while campaigning there over the weekend. >> women should have the right to make their own decisions about their health care. >> reporter: but the the israel-hamas conflict is the other big issue in the great lakes state. some pro-palestinian activists are pushing democratic primary voters to vote uncommitted in protest of the president's support of israel. despite the drop of a major source of funding, nikki haley's campaign is touting the money they've raised from grassroots conservatives. her team says haley raised more than $1 million in the hours following that major loss on her

home turf in south carolina. >> all right, naomi ruchim in new york. thanks so much. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says a temporary cease-fire deal with hamas is in the works but can only be reached if the terror group drops its, quote, delusional claims. netanyahu appeared on cbs' "face the nation" yesterday. he told our margaret brennan that israel's planned ground offensive in the southern gaza city of rafah would only be delayed somewhat if a deal is worked out. >> victory's within reach, and you can't have victory until you eliminate hamas. once we begin the rafah operation, the intense phase of the fighting is weeks away from completion. not months. weeks away from completion. >> at least six u.s. citizens are among the more than 100 hostages that hamas is believed to be holding. a draft cease-fire deal reportedly includes the release of up to 40 women and older

hostages in return for up to 300 palestinian prisoners. an active duty member of the u.s. air force is in critical condition after setting himself on fire outside the israeli embassy in washington. officials say the man started a live stream, set his phone down, doused himself in accelerant, and ignited the flames yesterday. a source told the "ap" the man said he will no longer be complicit in genocide. israel has strongly denied allegations of genocide in its ongoing war against hamas in gaza. the white house says president biden will meet with congressional leaders tomorrow to put pressure on lawmakers to approve funding for ukraine. this past weekend marked two years since russia's invasion of ukraine, and for the first time ukraine's president acknowledged that 31,000 ukrainian soldiers have been killed in the fighting. cbs' charlie d'agata has more from kyiv.

>> reporter: with an historic train station, a church, and neighboring homes in flames and ruins from an overnight russian missile bombardment, year three of the full-scale invasion began a lot like day one. ukrainian defenses overwhelmed by a better equipped enemy. ukrainian leaders pleading for help from the west. "whether ukraine will lose depends on you, on our partners, on the western world," president zelenskyy said tonight. "if we will be strong with weapons, we will not lose, we will win." and while congress wrestles over that $60 billion ukraine funding package, cbs news has learned that the lack of money severely impacts u.s. army operations on nato's eastern flank with the country and beyond. just last week u.s. soldiers

from the third infantry division out of georgia held live fire exercises in neighboring poland. military planners have identified this region as especially vulnerable to attack with russian territory to the west and kremlin allied belarus to the east separated by a 40-mile strip of nato territory. but the cash-strapped army has not only been footing the bill on training and equipping ukrainian troops, spokesman colonel martin o'donnell says the lack of funding also puts in peril exercises like these. critical exercises? >> critical exercises. not only exercises that maintain our readiness, but should the need arise our ability to stand side by side with our nato allies to deter should deterrence fail aggression. >> reporter: aggression from regional enemies, namely russia. ukrainian leaders and military

analysts alike have repeatedly warned that if russia achieves victory here, that puts u.s. and nato partner poland squarely on a new front line. charlie d'agata, cbs news, kyiv. and back here in the u.s., home sales are in a slump mostly due to the rising interest rates on loans. elise preston has a closer look at when the real estate market might pick up again. >> reporter: americans are hoping for a spring thaw in the housing market, rising mortgage rates and higher home prices have kept many would-be buyers on the sidelines. >> when you have mortgage rates above 7%, it's really been a gut punch for the whole real estate market. that's why there's so much focus on the fed in this game of poker, when do they start to cut rates. >> reporter: the current rate for a 30-year mixed loan is 7.5%, with the average home price hitting a high of $379,000.

dan ives of webbush securities, a brokerage firm -- >> the housing market's essentially at a standstill. i'll call it a buyer's strike, and sellers, you know, inventory starting to increase, but no one's really signing on the dotted lane. >> reporter: despite inflation slowing down, americans are spending more than 11% of their income on food, according to the u.s. department of agriculture. a number not seen in more than 30 years. what is your advice to the average consumer? >> my advice is we're going to see the fed start to cut as we get into may and june. that's good for consumers. >> reporter: some good economic news, the nation's unemployment rate remained steady with more people finding new jobs at the start of the year than experts predicted. elise preston, cbs news, los angeles. coming up this hour, college campus murder. new information on the suspect in the death of a woman who was out jogging.

"the atlanta journal-constitution" reports the suspect in the murder of a jogger on the university of georgia campus entered the u.s. illegally. that's according to u.s. immigration and customs enforcement. police arrested jose ibarra on

friday on multiple charges including murder and kidnapping. the body of 22-year-old augusta university nursing student laken riley was found on thursday in a wooded area on the uga campus. immigration officials say ibarra, a venezuelan citizen, illegally crossed the border near el paso, texas, in 2022, was arrested, and released for further processing. "the denver post" says a 150-acre wildfire is burning on the grounds of the u.s. air force academy near colorado springs. multiple crews responded to the fire which started yesterday afternoon. the academy says the colorado springs fire department is assisting. officials say no homes are threatened, but some pre-evacuation instructions were handed out. and "the new york times" says people in the city are mourning the death of a beloved owl named flaco. the owl became famous when it escaped from its central park

the movie held on to the number-one spot for a second week in a row as it reached the $120 million mark globally. some at&t customers could be getting a fund, and the supreme court hears key social media cases. matt pieper has those stories in your cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks clung to modest gains on wall street friday, enough to edge the s&p 500 index to another record the dow gained 62 points, nasdaq lost 44, s&p up just a point. if you have at&t cell service and were affected by the outage last week, you're getting a refund albeit a small one. the company says there will be a $5 tax credit to make it right and will apply credits to people's accounts. cellphone service was out for hours last thursday impacting hundreds of thousands of customers in major cities in several states. the supreme court is taking on some big social media cases beginning today. it will consider arguments on

whether to give texas and florida more control over social media platforms and their content. at issue, can sites like facebook and youtube decide what goes on the sites and what can or should be removed. such a ruling could usher in similar laws in other states. and warren buffett put out his annual letter to berkshire hathaway shareholders. in it the oracle of omaha says play the long game and ignore pundits offering financial forecasts. the 93-year-old has written an annual letter since 1965. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this monday morning. i'm matt pieper, cbs news, new york. five players are being suspended by the nba without pay for their roles in friday's wild fight during the miami heat-new orleans pelicans game. two players received three-game suspensions for leaving the bench area and fighting. two other players including miami's jimmy butler were suspended for one game each for instigating that fight.
