sides as the candidates march toward their nominations. time is ticking for congress to act to avoid a partial government shutdown. when the money runs out, and why some lawmakers are optimistic about a path out. and breaking overnight, wildfires lead to a disaster declaration in texas. a nuclear facility is forced to shut down as fires explode in size and flames close in. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. we begin this hour with the results of last night's primaries in michigan. the possible clues they might offer for the general election in november. as expected, donald trump is the projected winner of the republican primary. he easily beat nikki haley who is vowing to stay in the race through next week's super tuesday contest. president biden is the projected winner of the democratic primary. he faced a protest vote as tens of thousands cast their ballots

for uncommitted. jarred hill has a closer look at the results this morning. good morning. >> reporter: no question here, as you mentioned, trump and biden easily won their primaries in michigan. but some say that a closer look at the numbers show some fracturing in both of their parties. another victory lap for president biden and former president trump projected to win their michigan primaries, putting us one step closer to a rematch in november. >> i think we have a presumptive nominee. >> reporter: on social media trump simply posted "thank you, michigan," after picking up a fifth primary victory over his former u.n. ambassador, nikki haley. [ chants ] at an earlier event in colorado, haley's supporters urged her not to drop out. >> y'all, i'm still standing here. >> reporter: on the democrat side, president biden faced a key test from those who oppose his handling of israel's war on hamas in gaza. despite the landslide win, some activists in michigan, home of the largest arab american

population in the u.s., are claiming a victory of their own. the campaign pushing past its goal of 10,000 voting uncommitted in protest. >> this is the only way we can bring the -- >> reporter: earlier this week the president said the u.s. and other nations are brokering a deal to pause fighting during the muslim holy month of ramadan in exchange for hostages. >> we're close, not done yet. and my hope is by next monday we'll have a cease-fire. >> reporter: while president biden thanked the people of michigan for exercising their right to vote in a statement last night and called attention to the united auto workers and abortion rights, he did not mention the war. so one thing to watch for here is whether this uncommitted protest-style vote spreads to other state democratic primaries. meanwhile, at least trump and biden are shifting their focus now to the southern border with their visits scheduled there tomorrow. as haley's campaign focuses on super tuesday.

>> lots to follow here. jarred hill in new york. thank you. a partial government shutdown could come friday night if lawmakers fail to pass funding. president biden met with congressional leaders yesterday to urge them to act on that and also new aid for ukraine. as cbs' weijia jiang reports, the house speaker is delaying support for aid citing other priorities. >> reporter: president biden told congressional leaders that the time to send ukraine more money is now. >> i think the consequence of inaction every day in ukraine are dire. >> reporter: house speaker mike johnson, who has refused to allow a vote on new funding for ukraine, was pressed by everyone in the room including his republican colleague, senate minority leader mitch mcconnell. >> the meeting on ukraine was one of the most intense i have ever encountered in my many meetings in the oval office. >> reporter: what made this meeting one of the most intense you've ever had here at the

white house? >> the urgency of supporting ukraine and the consequences to the people of america. >> reporter: speaker johnson came out of the meeting undeterred, insisting on action to address the southern border first. >> we must take care of % america's needs first. when you talk about america's needs, you have to talk first about our open border. >> reporter: another top focus, the looming government shutdown. several federal agencies run out of money in three days, and all of them could close one week from friday. hard right republicans, who have brought the government to the brink of a shutdown three times in six months, are now pressuring johnson to include a list of demands that could kill a funding deal like cutting funding for background checks to buy guns, cutting incentives for buying electric vehicles, and defunding planned parenthood. >> families are living paycheck to paycheck. >> reporter: besa pinchotti runs a support group for military families that rely on the

federal nutrition program, wic, which would not be available if the government closes. >> that's a huge problem. that's the safety net that so many families rely on. >> reporter: president biden and house speaker mike johnson both say that they are optimistic that congress will be able to reach an agreement to keep the government open, but time is running out. the house does not return to washington from a break until wednesday evening. that's just two days before that partial shutdown kicks in. weijia jiang, cbs news, the white house. hunter biden is set to testify today before house lawmakers. president biden's son will appear for a deposition behind closed doors. this after a year-long faceoff between hunter biden and the republicans behind an impeachment probe of his father. the young biden is expected to be questioned about his business dealings. the impeachment push suffered a

setback when a key witness for republicans was charged with concocting a false story. breaking overnight, a fire emergency in the texas panhandle has now prompted evacuations. more than a dozen fires started burning on monday. the largest, the smokehouse creek fire, has now quadrupled in size in just a few hours to nearly 400 square miles. northeast of amarillo, a nearby fire forced a nuclear weapons facility to shut down. the plant assembles and disassembles atomic bombs. nonessential workers were evacuated, and the governor issued a disaster declaration for 60 counties. warm temperatures along with high winds and dry conditions are fueling the wildfires. we're learning new details this morning about what happened before the death of nex benedict, a nonbinary student who died a day after getting into a fight with three other students. as omar villafranca reports,

benedict's death has sparked rallies nationwide. >> reporter: from rallies in new york -- [ chants ] -- to walkouts in oklahoma -- [ chants ] -- members of the lgbtq community showed their support for nex benedict, a 16-year-old nonbinary student who died earlier this month after a fight at their owasso, oklahoma, high school. a preliminary autopsy report says nex did not die from injuries in the fight. >> it's been really tough to lose someone that i cared about. to see all of this hate manifesting into something so powerful. >> reporter: the fight took place in the girls' bathroom, and police released videos showing everyone involved walking out on their own. a school nurse sent nex to the hospital where body cam shows them sitting next to their grandmother. nex told the officer the girls were harassing them. nex says they reacted by throwing water on the girls, which started a three-on-one fight.

>> so they just up and decided to just start messing with you? there was -- >> yeah, because of the way that we dress. >> reporter: the harassment is familiar to lgbtq youth like alex deroin. >> what happened on an individual level was an individual situation that happens because of a systematic problem. >> reporter: he puts some of the blame on oklahoma leaders who have pushed anti-lgbtq laws in the state like oklahoma's state superintendent ryan walters who has been accused of enacting policies that limit transgender students. >> i'm going to completely reject the notion that common sense policies that there's two genders, that there shouldn't be gender idealogy pushed in schools, has any connection whatsoever to students feeling safe. >> reporter: police are waiting on autopsy and toxicology reports to determine the cause of death. folks here in this community are alsowaiting to see if the district attorney will file charges related to the initial fight. omar villafranca, cbs news, owasso, oklahoma.

"the new york times" reports two men were convicted in a 2002 murder of run dmc deejay jam master jay. the deejay whose real name was jason mizell was gunned down in his new york recording studio. prosecutors said it was revenge for a failed drug deal. yesterday a federal jury in

brooklyn convicted mizell's godson, karl jordan jr., and a longtime friend, ronald washington. >> although it appeared that the case had gone cold and would not be solved, law enforcement never wavered in its determination to bring mr. mizell's killers to justice. >> a third person has also been charged in connection with the murder and is awaiting trial. "the san francisco chronicle" says advocates for the black community called on officials to make investments in lieu of cash reparations for decades of racism and discrimination. yesterday san francisco supervisors formally apologized to african americans for the city's role in perpetrating racism. a city task force had earlier suggested financial reparations, but black leaders are also calling for investments in five key areas to help black residents including education, health, and housing.

the estate of the late disco icon donna summer is suing rappers kanye west and ty dolla sign. the lawsuit claims the duo illegally used her song "i feel love" without permission. the estate says it denied the musicians permission to use the 1977 song on their collaborative effort "good don't die." it said it shamelessly includes rerecorded parts of th song that were instantly recognizable. apple is abandoning its electric car project, and there's no love lost for workers at bumble. carissa lawson has our cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: ahead of the nation's inflation report scheduled to come out tomorrow, stocks ended the session mixed on tuesday. the dow shed 96 points. the nasdaq gained 59, and the s&p 500 gained 8. apple is pulling the plug on building an electric car. the project's been taking years

-- ten years in the making but executives reportedly told the 2,000-member team working on the car caused project titan that they will instead shift to working with apple's artificial intelligence unit. toyota has issued a recall for 381,000 tacoma pickup trucks over a safety issue with the rare axle that could cause a crash. this is the company's fourth recall announcement in six days and involves certain 2022 to 2023 toyota tacoma trucks sold in the u.s. toyota did not say if the issue has already caused crashes or injuries. customers will be notified by mail in late april about getting the issue fixed. and a bad breakup for workers at the online dating company bumble. the company will lay off about 350 workers, roughly 37% of its work force, as part of a plan to restructure. it's a new ceo's first big move after bumble forecast disappointing first-quarter revenue. that's your "money watch" report for this wednesday morning. i'm carissa lawson, cbs news, new york.
