thanks so much for joining us this morning. it's thursday, february 29th. >> so let's get it started. >> chopping firewood. making sure we have shovels. making sure we have all the food we need. we're all set. >> not wasting any time. getting ready for what could be historic snowfall in the sierra. we're tracking the days long storm on this thursday morning. it freaked out a lot of people okay? because there was a lot of -- of people here at multiple families in these homes. and they didn't know where to go. >> a scary time for people living near coyote creek but several years later a new defense against flooding in the south bay. we want to take on a new opportunity to invest in affordable housing. >> this is our site to say no

be getting. let's look live in the sierra and the expect that storm will blanket that area with record amounts of snow. unsafe and fast and the warnings are already out. caltrans says stay off the roads to you this morning and more cars means more danger for their workers out there trying to keep the roads clear. listen. >> it's pretty much their job to keep the roads open. at all times. and i mean, they definitely have safety protocols in place. you know? and most of the time, you know, these guys, you know, they're in vehicles so at least they're in an enclosed environment and snow plows and blowers and things like that. so they're -- they're not exactly outside, you know. necessarily. all the time. >> so bringing jessica in now. we also know, jess a popular music festival planned in the sierra was canceled because of the storm. >> yes. >> you are -- >> i think this was big news. originally it seemed like they wanted to keep it around for just a little bit longer right? >> they did and they tried so hard but we understand you have been working with a lot of other meteorologists in our region to tell what is to

expect because we're worried about the risk of avalanche too. >> especially with the wind gusts, an easy trigger for an avalanche to occur in a region like that where heavy snow is falling heading into this weekend's forecast. starting today under blizzard warnings and we're going to get to that in just a minute. but let's start back here in the bay here because if you were thinking about going to the sierra-at-tahoe region this weekend, this is time to rethink and turn around. we're waking up to 40s and low 50s throughout the bay area and a cool and cloudy start throughout most of the bay and within the next couple of hours the showers roll back in from offshore, this is the end of the die break we had for the past couple of days. yesterday was stunning day with sunshine widespread throughout the bay area. doppler was dry. no activity with showers building in just yet. but that's going to look a lot different within the next couple of hours. right now we're waking up to some light little pockets of showers kind of just sweeping in from offshore along our coast but for the rest of us it's dry as we wake up and head out the

door. this is our weather headlines as we head into weekend. for the most part, the light rain starts to roll in and the next three, four hours. we'll start to see that up in the north bay and down into the santa clara valley. it's going to be a well weekend for us ahead as we head into our friday and saturday forecast. the showers really ramp up and the blizzard conditions in the sierra become very big concern for us and our friends up there as we gear up for the weekend. dealing with snow anywhere up to around 10 feet at peak elevations. for now g over to you. all right jessica. you know i had a few rain drops coming in as well but watch the roadways closely because of the weather we're expecting. so definitely keep that in mind as you head out the door this morning. right now, overview here, all of the busy spots that area you head to the bay bridge, the 880 to 92 commute. that south bay commute. that north bay commute. everything is holding steady with some pretty nice conditions. with the exception of the altamont pass. now that's where we're seeing speeds down to about 9 miles per hour reports of a

stalled vehicle slowing things down through there. and again, it's just an area where we typically see some brake lights in the early morning hours. so 44 minutes now, 205 over to 680. nicole? well, and for people already in the sierra, we hope you have stocked up with supplies. we sent our kelsi thorud to truckee ahead of the storm where just about everyone was out and about to prepare themselves while they still could. >> reporter: people living in the higher l evacuations of the sierra are making sure they have everything they need to safely ride it out. >> well, we're chopping firewood. making sure we have shovels. making sure we have all the food we need. we're all set. >> what they said is this the biggest three day dump since 2020 and we were here for that weekend. it was march 13th weekend. and i remember it was just -- as soon as i shoveled the deck, i go back inside and i look outside and it was another foot. two feet. just accumulated so fast. so. it's -- we'll see.

>> reporter: local hardware stores saw a steady stream of customers coming in, grabbing last-minute essentials. >> we will stay open as long as the town of truckee or chp doesn't come and ask us to close. >> reporter: employees say they don't expect to have to close during this coming storm but are cautioning people to prepare for the worst. >> we don't know what the weather is going -- what the power is going to be like. whether we're going to run out of power. so definitely having that extra storage of -- storage or canned goods that don't go bad as well as having a way to keep the items cold in the fridge. so that if you do have a power outage you are not losing your food. >> reporter: and most people are taking this storm seriously. preparing for anything while also getting excited for the sight of fresh snow. >> it's going to be a good one. you can -- you can tell. hopefully everyone is safe and just -- stays inside and has power. if not, shovel and have fun. >> reporter: now most of the people we spoke with told us they feel prepared going into

this storm. they bought all the supplies they can think of. now it's just time to hunker down and wait and see what comes. >> lull good to be prepared though. the department of water resources also preparing for the storm. they've moved up the third snow survey of the season to this morning. the water resources team will be at phillips station around 10:00 a.m. just west of lake tahoe. the new snow pack numbers should tell us california's water supply and it should be a good one. in light of all the recent storms that have dumped snow in the sierra, the past couple of weeks. and stay with us for more continuing coverage of this potentially life-threatening storm. we'll have the latest information on air, online at kpix.com and always streaming on cbs news bay area. reed? well, the suspect in last year's half-moon bay mass shootings begins the journey to justice before a judge saying he's not guilty. chinless is accused of murdering seven co-workers in the cold of

january 2023. for that he faces first degree murder charges. this was the deadliest attack in san mateo county's history. looking live in oakland. where we know many of you lament that crime drives out business. now is your chance to see the next round of candidates for police chief. four of them to appear in a forum before the public and we're talking about pridgen, mitchell. davis, and molina. get this. mayor sheng thao says she will be a no snow and calls the meeting counterproductive. keep in mind the police commission sent a first list of potential candidates to the mayor which included armstrong but she rejected that list. the mayor thao is quoted saying a forum identifying candidates places the candidates at risk with their current employers and puts oakland in a premature bidding war with the candidates' current employer. so she won't be there. in the race for the white house, dueling positions on immigrations happening at the texas border with mexico. biden versus trump and both in the lone star state making their

early morning quakes rattling northern california. the latest near the coastline at crescent city. the strongest a reported 4.9 but mt. in the east bay, that earthquake hit around 6:20 last night. a shaker of 3.5. our friends at f you said you felt it some as far away as roseville. just east of sacramento. mother

nature is meaning business this morning. now let's talk to jess. absolutely. we need the talk about the sierra just a little bit more. a live look behind me over lake tahoe as they wake up and gear up for some blizzard conditions as we head into the next couple of days. now to define a blizzard, it takes a couple of ingredients. of course strong wind speeds anywhere above 35 miles per hour whether that's sustained or wind gusts. to add to that visibility needs to be reduced due to the blowing snow throughout the local community in the regions and that needs to be longer than three hours. if the conditions last, that's the reason why they issued a blizzard warning. not only for areas like south lake tahoe but widespread throughout the sierra with snowfall levels expected to hit around 5 to 10 feet and wind gusts could see especially at the ridges anywhere up to around 80 to 100 miles per hour. now it's also worth mentioning as we take a look at the models heading into the next couple ofdays they are expecting to see the high conditions from the storm that's moving in if the north

and they could see that snowfall really add up fast. certain resorts and we are keeping a close eye on them as we head into this next couple of days. the storm system's also bringing us plenty of rain as we head into the afternoon hours today. tomorrow. lasting into our weekend forecast. it looks like now it's going to linger into our sunday models too so i'll show you that in just a second but let's start off on futurecast and showing this morning. light rain in the forecast for us through the next couple of hours as it sweeps in from offshore with relatively light winds. the wind kick up more in the afternoon hours today. that's when the frontal band really moves in closer to around 4:00 that's when it hits the south bay. at this point a quarter inch of rain in areas like bodega bay and san francisco and we continue to watch the rainfall really add up into the overnight hours tonight. early morning hours tomorrow. it's going to stay active on our doppler in the next couple of days at times we can see isolated heavier pockets of rain like we saw all the way into tomorrow afternoon. down down into the south bay and that will continue to be the trendinto the saturday forecast

as well. keep a close eye on the rainfall totals and update with you any new developments. the earthquakes hit yesterday. the daytime highs today, we're talking about seize in the forecast for us widespread throughout the bay area. more on this coming up in just a bit. for now g over to you. all right, thank you. let's talk about the roadways right now because again it's little calm right now. that's certainly going to change. keep that in mind throughout the day. make sure to have the umbrella handy and give yourself extra time on the roadways. a few rain drops coming in for me along 280 this morning. a live look though at the current mapping system. where you can see realtime data where a lot of green is popping up which means speeds above 55 miles per hour for the most part. on a lot of our freeways. and that's great news for the morning commute but it's that time of day not a lot of traffic anyway. getting closer to the weekend and typically things die down a little bit on the roadways getting closer to friday. now this is one of the hotspots we're following. that's that ride into the

altamont pass and other than that, if you are not taking the altamont pass this morning, so far you are good to go on whatever freeway you take. and of course you can grab the travel times on your app once you hop in the car but for the most part. 880. south bay, all of that is looking good. just right here westbound 580 coming out of tracy getting into the altamont pass where you are going to see some brake lights. so let's get back to the forecast. jess? all right. well, we are tracking this storm that's staying over california for the next full days and rain here means snow in the sierra and right now a blizzard warning is in effect there. hopefully everyone there is prepped and ready to hunker down for the storm. and rachel windchill with our sister station at kovr is doing the hard work out in the palisades right now with more on the conditions. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: good morning, we're actually at echo summit. palisades way high up. but we're feeling the effects of this change in the weather right now. and i just want to say this is a caltrans station so they've got salt, they've got a scraper and they've got sand. and they are getting

ready and it is really starting to drop in temperature. and also the wind is starting to pick up. we did see a plow alongside the road but the roads are all clear at this point in time. this is like we said the calm before the storm. but that is not stopping folks from getting ready. there's lots of people who are prepping and there's people who are prepping to come up here. a lot of caltrans people and locals saying are you telling people to not come up here? in fact, in the twin bridges area, we're forecasting 8 to 12 feet of snow right where i'm standing. now some were making last-minute purchases to stock up son supplies in case the power goes out. have the batteries ready and warning folks to be prepared for all possibilities. gas up. be ready. have your generators on standby. and just stay off the roads. >> bring supplies with you. bring flashlights and make sure

the cell phone is charged and make sure you have blankets and all it takes is either one or two spinouts or if you know, we get the whiteout conditions, we have to hold traffic and shut the road down. >> reporter: many sending a message toe skiers that the snow is going to be there. and there's no harm in waiting until next week. of course if you are a diehard snowboarder, you want to get that fresh powder. but 8 to 12 feet of snow? [ laughter ] highway 50? i mean, 80 maybe. but there's -- they're likely going to shut down 50 when you have that much snow up here. you just got to get it off the road. and you have to have enough people to do it. >> absolutely. and we are keeping a close eye on that storm you said such great advice there. thank you so much rachel and stay warm. shawn? it's 5:18. and today is february 9th. a day that only comes every four years. but has forever changed one east

now taking a live look outside on this thursday morning. and good morning to all of you waking up here in san francisco. it is a first alert weather day. you were hoping for a break from the rain in the bay. but it is back

today. and taking a live look at the top of the palisades tahoe mountain. at about 8200 feet. we could be looking at 10 feet of snow in the mountains. first alert meteorologist jessica burch is tracking the storm all morning long and we're going to hear from jess in just a few minutes. well, happy leap day. february 29th comes around once every four years and most of us probably don't miss it on the off years. but what if you were born today and what if your twin brother was just born just minutes before on february 28th? how would you celebrate? >> well, one east bay family has figured it all out and celebrating both birthdays has a special meaning because of what their lives represent. shawn chitnis hi, joins us this morning to talk more about the joy and you know, just to them. to have reached this day. >> reporter: imagine that you get this incredible moment. right? because one birthday is on the 28th and one is on the 29th. only 11 minutes apart and you want to be excited about this but then not able to do that even though one is born on the 29th because there's so much that's going on and you

have concerns that came with their early birth. well, one family did have to deal with that and miles and walter's family. they've experienced it. and now they get to celebrate, throwing a special birthday that only happens every four years. the household probably lookslike a lot of families trying to start the day before work and school. >> the mornings are chaos. as you know, you might imagine. with three boys. >> reporter: their sons wake up with so much energy that shooting hoops in the kitchen -- and jumping around in the backyard -- doesn't slow them down. >> begging them to eat breakfast before school. reminding them to brush their teeth and get dressed. about -- 10 to 12 times. >> reporter: these twins keep summer and ryan erickson busy but the boys seem to think it all works out each day. >> we get dressed. we play with our dog and we also eat breakfast. >> reporter: that's miles, the

slightly older twin. who was born in the final minutes of february 28th. he turned 8 on wednesday. his barely younger brother walter was born just about ten minutes later early into february 29th. walter's of course also turning 8 this year but he sees it differently. >> since his birthday is on a leap year, and that means that i'm only 2. >> reporter: all part of the fun year, years later. but this week is not just about celebrating. it's a time to show their appreciation. >> it was like the scariest time in our lives. >> reporter: the boys were born at 26 weeks and spent 69 days in the nicu at sutter all that baits medical center in -- >> we promised ourselves in nicu when things were pretty harrowing and uncertain if we were able to bring them home. we would celebrate and just express our gratitude every

four years. >> a huge party and invite all the nicu nurses and all the doctors and help who helped take care of us. >> reporter: a special plan for each two. they get to choose dinner and dessert. >> i want go to back to zaxby's for dinner and fenton's for dessert. >> reporter: their older bruce has been a cone substantiate in their lives helping them to have ton around the house in all hours. just last week their family got a little bigger when they welcomed bagel. the new puppy into the home. walter suggested the idea ahead of their birthdays. >> dogs are my favorite animal and i really like a puppy. so it's -- cute and fun to play with. >> reporter: and since their separate birthdays only come around every four years, these two have been looking forward to this week for the past 12 months. >> they're pretty good at sharing. and they're pretty good at sharing their birthday. but they definitely don't miss out on the opportunity to have

their own thing on leap year. >> reporter: a time for the family to reflect on all that they went through and all that they can be thankful for in the years since. while encouraging the ericksons to leap ahead to adventures and excitement that await them in four more years. when they'll get to do it all over again. okay. so what do they do when it's not a leap year? the brothers celebrate together. so they both would have celebrated yesterday on the 28th. and as part of the big party they host every four years which will be happening this weekend, they encourage others to donate to the nicu as a way of saying thank you. we just love this family. right? >> yes. >> i give up. >> two of them hugging and they just love each other so much and i hope that stays. because i have two boys and they used to love each other a lot and now i feel like as they get older it's like it's not your actual birthday. it's my birthday. >> we have to check in with them right when they reach 12 and see what they're doing but also thebig brother is such a great part of the family. the

5:29 in the morning and good morning to you. kind of soupy skies out there from the top of the mark looking over towards sutro. trust us it's over there. just send a fishing line out and you might catch it. the next round of rain moving into the bay on this first alert weather day. and that means and this is going to be a big theme over the next 48 hours, more snow dumping in the sierra. you are looking live at highway 80 soda springs area right now where a blizzard warning is in effect. drivers, just really being careful. that blizzard warning through sunday morning. our sister station kovr went up to truckee yesterday there ahead of the storm and wanted to catch up with visiting skiers and said they were happy for the day

waiting on the wet weather. >> that would be great. >> we're trying to extend our trip or just go home early which is not what i want to do. because i'm here to ski. >> for those determined to go up to the sierra, keep your emergency supplies on-deck before the storm begins and then during the storm, just be sure to clear all exhaust vents if you are in a vrbo or a condo or elsewhere. just look at those exhaust vents around the house and also keep those clear from debris and snow. >> you know, he made a point. he said i don't know if i should say longer or if i should leave early. if you are going to stay longer you are going to be stuck with some conditions you might not want to be putting yourself into you know? we can be seeing heavy snow throughout a lot of the communities. to add to that power outages are going to be possible. a lot of impacts from the storm as it builds in in the sierra. but back mere in the bay looking a lot different. talking about rain in the forecast as soon as this morning from the same storm and

let's dive straight into the forecast right now. clear skies in san jose andalong the peninsula up into san francisco we warm up a little bit more sitting at 52 degrees right now in san francisco. little cloudy and cool behind me it's kind of hard to make out the live look at the bay bridge. it's there. it's just a little bit souped in right now. with some fog that's kind of laying in certain pockets of the bay. now what's happening right now is we're seeing more clouds roll in from offshore and start seeing just some light rain associated with that system that it moves -- while it moves its way in i should say. now light rain will continue to arrive in the morning hours and ramps up more into the afternoon and we're expecting a wet friday and saturday forecast for us with lingering showers into sunday but the big concern for us right now in the weather headlines is the blizzard conditions up in the sierra. if you were so adamant about making the plans to last and happen. this is not the weekend to be messing around up there. this is one of the strongest storms we have seen so far this season and it's moving in from the gulf of alaska right now and continuing to really impact the friends up in oregon and all the way up into washington but back here,

along our coastline and up into the sierra too. it continues to wring out more moisture for us up into the sierra and we're going to talk more about that and the rainfall totals back here in the bay coming up in just a bit. for now over to you, g. jess, thank you. taking a look at the roadways right now as we get ready to head out the door for the morning commute. a lot of green still which is good but again you might see the slick surfaces this morning and later on today especially. so have those umbrellas handy and give yourself some extra time. one area we are seeing brake lights, this is really our slow spot this morning. that's that ride westbound 580 as you work from tracy getting into the altamont pass. that's definitely getting slow as you head through there. so just expect some brake lights at least towards north flynn. about a 44 minute travel time. well, as another storm rolls in, santa clara county has a new defense against flooding. our chopper was over coyote creek where valley water installed new flood gates. in 2017 anderson dam was breached that sent water rushing into communities along coyote creek.

our len ramirez reports. >> oh, yeah, the water came over. and all those streets back here by the garbage cans all across the street. all that was underwater. >> reporter: robert gutierrez lives near the banks of coyote creek and lived through the floods of 2017 when water surged over the banks in several spots. flooding homes and cars and leaving entire neighborhoods underwater. robert was ordered to evacuate. >> it freaked out a lot of people. okay? because there was -- there was a lot of people here at multiple families in these homes. and they didn't know where to go man. just come out in the middle of the night and i think it was like 12:00 at night they started tell people get out of their homes. and people started grabbing their stuff and leaving. and whether they knew where to go or not. i don't know. but i stayed in my home. i didn't go. >> reporter: fortunately for him, the gamble paid off and his house did not go underwater. but in hopes of preventing future floods, the valley water district is building thousands of feet of steel flood wallsalong the

creek. >> we are currently in the construction of the first part of the project. which is on its way to become -- by the end of this year. >> reporter: the massive sheets of steel are driven into the ground along the banks of the creek, leaving 5 to 10 feet exposed to form a barrier against rising waters. nine miles of walls will be built between montague expressway and tully road. the flood walls are also part of the anderson reservoir retrofit which will include a larger tunnel to discharge huge amounts of water down coyote creek. robert says seven years after the floods, he's glad something is finally getting done. >> this water just needs to be controlled. >> and stay with us for more continuing coverage of this potentially life-threatening storm on air and online at kpix.com and always streaming on our app, on cbs news bay area. time now for a look at this morning's top stories. the securities and exchange

commission is looking into whether investors in openai a san francisco based company, were misled. the "wall street journal" reports that the sec is examining internal communications by ceo sam altman. the regulators are also seeking records from other current and former officials at the company. altman was briefly ousted in november after the board said he was quote, not consistently candid. the supreme court has agreed to consider whether donald trump should stand trial for charges that he plotted to overturn 2020 election result. the former president says he's entitled to absolute immunity because he was president at the time. two lower courts have rejected that. the high court will hear arguments during the week of april 22nd and a decision is expected in june. mitch mcconnell the senate minority leader will step down from his post in november. mcconnell who is 82 is the longest serving senate leader from either party but been at

odds with former president trump and other republicans over issues like nato and assistance for ukraine. he says after leaving the leadership, he will serve out his senate term until january of 2027. richard lewis, who brought laughter to generations has died in los angeles. most recently lewis played himself on "curb your enthusiasm." with his longtime friend larry david. earlier. he was a regular in the late night comedy scene. lewis announced last year that he had parkinson's disease and his publicist said he suffered a heart attack on tuesday night. richard lewis was 76. all right. so when you look at that picture, we all know this. we have a problem in the bay area and it is easily put. a lack of affordable housing. and a clock is ticking to get a large number of affordable houses available. keys in your hand so to speak. so san franciscans on your ballot you

are going to see something called proposition a. designed to get more housing units build. proponents say it will get money where it needs to be to get more housing that you can afford but not everyone agrees. our max darrow found that critics say quotas like this are unreasonable. >> reporter: san francisco needs more housing it's under a state mandate to build 82,000 units over the next eight years more than half affordable units and when it comes to getting that done. mayor breed believes prop a. is a key piece of the puzzle. >> proposition a. is extremely important opportunity for us to have more dollars coming into the affordable housing department. in order to not only build new, but preservation of existing affordable housing units. >> reporter: san francisco resident larry marsew doesn't. >> this is our sight to say no and push back to the state

to rebuild the san francisco economy. >> reporter: furthermore, he believes -- >> proposition a. supports this program to dramatically increase san francisco's density. >> reporter: marsaw authored the official opposition argument to prop a. in the voter information guide. >> this is directly quoting here, their plan changes the character of every neighborhood. bulldozes the west side. and brings poverty, drugs, crime, and homelessness to a street corner near you. what do you respond? >> i 100% completely disagree with that statement. because it's making the assumption that all people who unfortunately live in poverty are somehow associated with crime. >> reporter: according to 2023 figures, a single earner making $104,000 or less a year is considered low income in san francisco. >> san francisco is on the hook for another what? 46,000 affordable housing units by 2031. say voters don't pass

welcome back now. taking a live look outside on this thursday morning as we take a live look here to the oakland airport this morning. wet start to the day in the bay on this first alert weather day. let's get a live look now at the top of the palisades tahoe mountain at about 8200 feet. a lot more snow is on the way. first alert meteorologist jessica burch is tracking this storm all morning long. we're going to hear from yes, sir jess shortly. time now for the money

watch report. the faa is giving boeing 90 days to come up with a plan to address quality and safety issue. a report released monday found shortcomings in the company's safety culture. including workers fearing retaliation for raising safety related concerns. the justice department is now investigating if last month's mid-flight door panel blowout violated a settlement agreement of two crashes involving 737 max planes. apple put the brakes on building a self-driving electric car. bloomberg reports many employees working on project titan will be moved to the company's ai division. we reached out to apple for comment about the end of the ten year effort. and so far, we have not heard back. i love what that says on the screen there, multiplying good. his nonprofit launched one of the largest privately funded pilot programs that gives unhoused people a basic

income in the bay area. and now he's sharing the ground-breaking program making a difference. sharon chin has the update on the 2018 jefferson award winner. >> [ spea king in a global language ] >> reporter: andres has a hug for kevin rather a man who's changed his life. >> i'm seeing andres you know in a much better spot than he was a year ago. hey. >> [ spea king in a global language ] >> reporter: we were there a year ago when kevin and andres first met face-to-face at then oakland shelter. kevin's miracle messages nonprofit connects unhoused people like andres with family members for support. at the time, andres was recovering from four surgeries after he fell scaling the wall at the mexican border. >> [ spea king in a global language ] >> reporter: and he accepted a gift from kevin's nonprofit. andres was randomly chosen as one of more than 100 people in the bay area and los angeles to get $750 in monthly income for

a year to use as they saw fit. a year later, andres says that basic income was a blessing that he used to buy a bicycle to get around as he looks for a job. and awaits his turn on the government housing list and he's bought clothes and food and helped with family emergencies and gave to those with even less. >> [ speaking in a global language ] >> occasionally he'd walk on the streets and have people say i don't have anything to eat and do you have any money? he'd give out some of his money to other people. >> reporter: kevin says a study shows they spend more than a third of the money for food, followed by housing, transportation, and health care. fewer remained unsheltered. >> after six months of $750 a month for just six months, that number went from 30% down to 12%. >> reporter: as part of the program, kevin and andres formed a friendship and are now like family. kevin gave andres an invitation to his wedding but he also found his long lost

>> you can nominate your local hero online at kpix.com/hero. well, looking over at highway 80 in soda springs there's a blizzard warning in effect this morning. all throughout the sierra and it's going to last through sunday morning. so if you plan on traveling to or through this area, it might be best to wait it out. road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly. some roads are at risk of becoming impassable. and keeping a close eye on, they are already screening some of the trucks on 80 near apple gate. so -- something to think about. jess, especially as folks travel and hopefully they don't. >> really reconsider that weekend trip that you really wanted to do up there. these are not the conditions you want to be driving in or skiing in for that matter for a lot of reasons. we're starting off with a live look right now in the sierra-at-tahoe area. actually lake tahoe right now. i want to talk about the storm because originally it was a winter storm warning. they got

upgraded by the national weather service. and here's the reason why. there was a couple of ingredients they paid very close attention to. we are forecasting stronger than 35-mile-per-hour sustained winds or wind gusts throughout three hour period or longer as we head into the weekend and to add to that the blowing snow really reduces visibility less than a fourth of a mile. worth mentioning that that's the reason why we are keeping a close eye on them as the storm approaches us. they are going to be under a blizzard warning starting today lasting until sunday at 10:00 a.m. with snowfall totals anywhere up to around 5 to 10 feet in areas above 5,000 feet. about 1 to 4 feet expected above 3,000 feet. but the winds could be gusty at the peak leaflets and continue to update you with the snowfall totals as they continue to build throughout this weekend. it's from the exact same storm that's to bring us a series of showers starting this morning and lasting throughout this afternoon. here in the bay area. that lingers into our friday, saturday and sunday forecast too. this area of low pressure continues to roll its way down throughout the pacific northwest into our local communities. giving us some gusty conditions along the coast. and lots of rain too. as

we time this out on futurecast, it's starting off nice and light in the morning hours. this is within the next couple of hours and i meantime now is 5:50. around 8:45 0.01 of rain near san francisco and more up in the north bay as the storm starts to really add some progress into the afternoon and evening hours tonight. there's that frontal system right there. as it sweeps throughout the bay area. behind it is cold dense air and a lot more unsettled weather as we head into our friday forecast. and saturday forecast. i'm advancing the clock quick so you can kind of get the picture. all the way into friday afternoon, now we're closer to a quarter inch or at least a half inch of rain in san jose. stretching all the way up into the east bay and continues to add as we head all the way into the saturday and sunday forecast. lots of changes for us here in the bay area. it looks like the lingering showers are going to last into our sunday forecast. dries up by monday. and we're left with cooler conditions heading into this weekend too. keep in mind that system that's moving in, it's a cold front. so we checked off the box when it comes to the winds and we checked off the box when it came to the rain. and these daytime highs that we have today, oh they're going to

look so much different heading into this weekend. let's take like napa and sonoma for example. today we're talking about 50s in the forecast for us heading into this weekend. napa and sonoma up in the north bay could hit the mid- to upper 40s for our daytime highs. as early as saturday with it averaging out in our inland areas around 52 degrees. more on that in bit. for now over to you, g. >> jessica, thank you. taking a look at the roadways on a thursday this morning. a little closer to the weekend. so far traffic is fairly light for the most part on some of the bidsiest spots. 880 near 92. not lot of brake lights or issues there. ride out of the south bay. the 101 commute or 280 looking good and right now no troubles out of the north bay. where we are tracking the brake lights though is that ride t the bay bridge: starting to getbusy this morning. it's busy across the upper deck as well. you can see speeds down to about 13 to 35 miles per hour as you head over into the city. now adding to that our other hotspot is that ride into the altamont pass. that's where there's a broken down big rig stuck in lanes and that's going to take
