more snow. this is 80 and 267 that connects into truckee. cal trans shut down a stretch of the interstate from colfax to the nevada state line because of the snow. they said it will remain closed but could open sometime today. thankfully we have pretty much reached the end of the storm as you mentioned. blizzard warning in the sierra over the weekend has been downgraded to winter storm warning. we know of drivers up there that ended up stuck on i-80. >> so scary too. nearly 300 cars and 100 big rigs were at a stand still during the harsh conditions. part of the closure was because of an overturned big rig. chp managed to clear the last of the trapped drivers but things haven't cleared enough for chp to reopen i-80 yet. it was a sight to see as the drivers were trying to get through the region just this weekend alone. as we look at current conditions, better yet, let me show you how the storm

impacted us locally. from thursday until this morning we have seen over an inch of rain in oakland stretching all the way to the east bay, inch in antioch, two inches in livermore. this is rain we are talking about. we almost made an inch near san jose. as we look at what happened in the north bay, it's a little bit more impressive a storm. i want to show you on first alert doppler as we wake up because we are still adding to the numbers. let's stretch over into tahoe real fast where palasades got 171 mile-per-hour wind gusts just at the peak of palasades over this weekend. it was an impressive sight to see. as we look at san francisco in the bay area as we wake, winds are light as we head out. i will say this, we are dealing with light showers. they're continuing to move throughout the bay area throughout the next couple hours. that's light in the grand scheme of things. today we are going to see a little bit of a dry up into the evening hours tonight. a couple dry days ahead into

this week but the temperatures are cooler after that cold front swept its way through throughout the weekend. i will talk more about what you can expect throughout the forecast in a bit. g. >> thank you. let's talk about the freeways as you head out. taking a look at traffic at bay area bridges, bay bridge moving at the limit. traffic is moving well as you head into san francisco. we are seeing decent conditions overall at least on bridges as far as fog. no major issues. golden gate bridge is quiet, everything moving along as well. san mateo bridge, you see traffic is clear as you head west and east bound. it is a little slick so be careful as you head through. we want to get to breaking news also happening. heavy law enforcement activity right now in santa rosa. look at this video we got just into our newsroom. you see about a half dozen cruisers from several law enforcement agencies are on scene. this is after some sort of incident that happened about

12:30 a.m. with as many as three crime scenes. we are learning several indefinite road closures in the area on stony point and todd road. we have reached to the police and sonoma sheriffs office for more information. it's not just the drivers on i-80 stranded. even the locals are starting to get a little fed up. >> reporter: it was more of the same sunday as snow and strong winds continued to pummel the sierra. >> it's been quite a weekend. in our house we got about two feet which we don't normally get. this was a hell of a storm. >> reporter: eric and his family were hoping to go skiing at a resort near truckee. they drove all the way from reno only to find the mountain still closed. >> it was pretty rough. it was tough visibility but crews kept the streets in nice shape. so

not as bad as it could have been. >> reporter: piper johnson didn't risk getting on the roads. instead she and her dog billy walked to downtown truckee to check on her art gallery. >> i wanted to see if anyone else was open. if other people were open, maybe we should open. but i walked the strip and only saw three stores open. not really worth it. >> reporter: many restaurants were open. >> i have never seen it so high. >> reporter: we caught up with several people braving the elements for a hot meal. >> my friends are in town and we met for breakfast, just came from church with the other wave souls. >> reporter: we ran into one family up here from the bay area. they told us they come every year for a family vacation and weren't going to let the storm stop them. >> getting out of the house, coming down here. we have been playing games at night, family dinners. we love it. >> reporter: the tricky part will be getting back home. many

people we spoke with were supposed to leave town monday but the weather is keeping them another day. >> to keep up with our continuing coverage of the winter storm, stay with us on air and online at kpix.com and streaming on the cbs news bay area app. the journey to justice in the case of a murdered oakland police officer continues at a preliminary hearing. that means number of accused murderers in the case is up to four. the officer killed in december responding to a break in at a marijuana grow house in oakland, now 28-year-old russell faces a charge of murder. before he only faced lesser charges of burglary. four are dead after gunfire at an outdoor party in monterey's king city. police have a man hunt on their hands. three men in dark masks and clothing got out of a car and opened fire last night and just took off. three of the four died instantly in the yard. a

fourth died in the hospital. three others are recovering from their wounds. a live look at capitol hill, lawmakers have a ticking clock to pass a bill to keep the government open, sun up on that side of the country. we know house and senate leaders agreed on language for six bills to get that done. congress has to clear two by march 22 to keep money going to government programs and projects. chuck schumer encouraging democrats to get behind bipartisan measures. altered in alameda. look at the ad. some say political attack ads not only go too far and aren't representative of the truth in how they look or sound. when mother nature bears down, farm workers are often out of work. ahead, the work for solutions. a live look outside before break on this monday morning. it's chilly. it's wet. hopefully it will dry up this

ground. south lake tahoe saying there is heavy traffic on the highway towards meijers, urging people to wait out the storm before traveling. could open up later today. you voters have one more day to decide before primary day in california. you will have your chance to weigh in on issues including which two senate candidates will advance to the general election. a poll by uc berkeley's institute of governmental studies shows a republican can take the seat once occupied for decades by a democrat. we are talking about seat of the late senator dianne feinstein. former los angeles dodger and republican steve garvy is in front this morning. adam schiff is within the

margin of error but garby is in a tie. proposition one, it is for a $6.3 billion bond to help the state create treatment beds for people struggling with addiction and mental illness. critics say the state has spent $20 billion to fight homelessness but the issue has only gotten worse after that huge spend. there is a local race in the east bay, alameda county committee for district 18, winners have power because they help swing important races. as da lin is about to show you this race has people questioning whether attack ads have gone too far. see what you think. >> reporter: east oakland mom pamela says she's running for democratic central position so kids and her families can feel safe. >> i am tired of the conditions of the city. things don't seem

who unsuccessfully ran for a seat. >> i think the significance is important. >> reporter: the political analyst says winners of the alameda county democratic central committee district 18 race will have huge power. democratic committee hands out endorsements. he says endorsements lead to name recognition and donations. >> if you didn't have that endorsement, you would have to do this on your own. >> 85% of the people endorsed by this group end up winning their elections at the county, city levels. >> reporter: many candidates have demanded juarez pull the ad and apologize. >> how do we build bridges? how do we make sure there is an ability to collaborate? an ad like that doesn't do that. we denounce that and don't even want to give it attention. >> reporter: pamela hopes voters will ignore the ad. >> i want to bring my kids to a

park that's clean, not full of trash and filth. >> we tried to contact juarez for his side. so far, no response. only registered democrats can vote in the race and it is crowded. there are 29 candidates going after ten seats. nikki haley became the first woman to win a republican primary. the former un ambassador picked up victory in the district of columbia. of course she still trails far behind donald trump with her 43 compared to trump's 247. he is expected to pick up hundreds more tomorrow on super tuesday. the supreme court could rule as soon as today on whether trump's name can be kept off the ballots in certain states. colorado and maine currently have barred trump from the ballot and are holding primaries tomorrow. the states rule trump is not eligible to be on primary or general election ballots. they cite a clause in the u.s. constitution

that bars anyone who engages in insurrection from running for office. cbs news bay area is the place to go for all the results for tomorrow's primary. we'll have complete coverage on kpix and streaming on kpix.com and the cbs news app. a live look outside on this monday, business travelers heads up, we are watching as weather bears down not only in the bay area but also the sierra. this is sfo right now. as you plan your week, let's talk to jess with our weather. as we kick off the week, it is a lot calmer than how we ended last week. first alert doppler is still active as we wake up and head out the door with light showers currently passing throughout the peninsula as we wake up. the roads might be wet but on the bright side it's lighter compared to what we are dealing with friday into saturday. even yesterday i was driving along the 101 and, gosh, it was gusty and breezy. we had a lot of rain at times as cells started

to move to the east like we are seeing near san francisco stretching down into south san francisco too. we'll continue to watch the light scattered showers build in from offshore into the afternoon hours today. a similar trend for our forecast tomorrow into wednesday, it looks like most of it is tracking to the north of us. look at the green staying north of areas like santa rosa and bodega bay which usually get hit heavier with the rain. to match that with wind speeds, it's going to stay light. last week we were talking about gusty conditions around 50 miles per hour at times. that's not the case as we kick off the week. it's calm with an onshore flow into the afternoon today maxing off around 15 miles per hour which is a lot more manageable. today now that the cold front has swept through, it's a lot cooler for us heading out the door this morning with a frost advisory for the north bay until 9:00 a.m. but for everyone throughout this afternoon. areas like red wood city to the east bay, fremont,

livermore, upper 50s as we head into the afternoon. similar trend into the santa clara valley. last week we were talking about 70s last wednesday in san jose. today it's a repeat of 60s throughout the santa clara valley. throughout the week and into the weekend, we have interesting weather. today, tomorrow, into wednesday, there is that light chance of showers. in the grand scheme, a cloudy cool day into the next couple days. thursday we see more sun and clouds and then it is game on friday with beautiful conditions. that comes to an end saturday with showers returning to the area saturday evening into sunday morning. we'll keep you updated on the forecast for the rest of the week. >> thank you. let's talk about the freeways. we are doing pretty good on the roads so far anyway. it's still slick in some spots so be careful. i know i had my windshield wipers going across 280 into san

francisco. a live look at bay area bridges. it's doing okay, no metering lights yet. that will likely change in the next 10 to 15 minutes. we are not seeing a lot of brake lights or fog really towards the golden gate bridge. everything is pretty clear. there the was a wind advisory overnight for the golden gate as well as the benicia bridge. that's something to think about as you travel across the span. west bound communitiers are starting to get crowded but it's still at a good pace, travel times between 880 and 101 at 14 to 15 minutes. no delays east bound and towards 880 at the nimitz, everything is quiet. 5:20. a familiar face back in the bay at third base. are the giants done before opening day? a live look outside before we head to break, taking a look to

good morning. on cbs news bay area, it is 5:29. taking a live look outside on this monday from our mark hopkins cam looking east. now we will shift gears and show you i-80 in the sierra. look at the difference. this is what you will see. a lot of snow and more snow. 80 at 267, the live look where it connects into truckee. friday cal trans shut down a stretch from colfax to the state line because of the snow. it could open up sometime today. fingers crossed that will happen at some point. completely different here with the forecast. but it is still pretty cold. >> drivers are still facing traveling issues there. commuters should stay off the roads? i could not agree more. cal trans released this video of a car being pulled out of the snow. this was south lake tahoe area on highway 50. national weather service says that the

snow here is accumulating between 8 to 14 inches and chain controls are still in effect. now that exact same storm that's been causing issues left and right in the sierra gave us our splash of showers too here in the bay area. since thursday we have seen over an inch of rain in los gatos, red wood city, stretching into areas like concord in the east bay and antioch as well. it is more of an impressive storm for some of us closer to novato getting over two and a half inches of rain throughout the weekend. believe it or not, we are dealing with more rain this morning as we wake up and head out. first alert doppler as we zoom in closer to san francisco, it looks leak light cells from offshore as they track to the east. luckily the winds are light so it's not that big of an issue. this is light rain that's going to make road wet before you head out. you will want to have the umbrella handy into the next days. we have unsettled weather in the forecast not only today but for our tuesday and

wednesday forecast too. to the sierra, the snow is starting to taper off. there are things we want to recap. over the weekend we saw 171 mile-per-hour wind gusts in areas like palasades south of donner pass. we have been talking about the road conditions like we showed. there were a lot of issues over the weekend and they are still under the blizzard warning. we will keep a close eye on changes in the forecast into the next couple days because we are going to start drying up around the corner. g. >> thank you. let's look at traffic this morning. it might be slick so be careful. you see the shein off the road way as you head towards the bay bridge. metering lights are on as you work into san francisco. we are not seeing a ton of back up yet. that will likely change as morning progresses. at the golden gate bridge, no fog to slow you down. traffic is looking pretty good. it's been an easy ride out of marin but pretty chilly. so don't forget that jacket. san mateo bridge is moving along.

breaking news, heavy law enforcement activity in santa rosa. look at the new video just in. you see about half a dozen cruisers from several law enforcement agencies. this is after some incident around 12:30 a.m. with as many as three crime scenes. we are listening of several indefinite road closures on stony point and todd road. we have reached out for more information. back to the impacts of the storm in the sierra. it's dark in donner lake. more than 100 without electricity. here is why. snow brought down power poles and huge trees. you saw the crews trying to clear the area. word is lights may stay off for a long while. tough weather caused closure of yosemite valley.

last night from cape canaveral in florida followed by spacex falcon nine rocket. it's expected to reach space station early tomorrow. living in california is tough for you and your wallet especially for farm workers. in sonoma, ag is the economic engine powered by farm workers who struggle to make ends meet. john ramos in your community where neighbors came together to try to help. >> there is very little employment for farm workers from the latter part of normal to right now. farm workers average working one, two days a week because mother nature interferes. >> reporter: with the rain falling and vines dormient, there isn't much for the small

army of sonoma farm workers to do. it's become part of the culture. >> it's sad that they help sustain a healthy vineyard industry in sonoma but during winter, they don't know where their next meal will come from. will they be able to afford their rent? >> reporter: guzman did pushing and they hosted the first farm worker resource fair to connect laborers with help they may not have known existed from healthcare, food assistance, help finding another job. >> the things we don't talk about are challenges for people who are undocumented and many who are undocumented have been in the county for many years and are contributing to the survival of all of us. and they are challenged because they may not be able to get a job in the way that someone who is documented and has a right to work. >> i think this farm worker resource fair is a really good opportunity to be able to

listen to the community, provide support in between the seasons, really start looking at bigger longterm sustainable support for farm workers. >> reporter: with the gap between rich and poor widening, the need for some kind of permanent support is reaching critical stage. farm workers cannot work remotely. they're tied to the land. people who have been traditionally willing to do back breaking work for little pay are finding they can't make it here anymore. >> they can't afford to live here, you know, with the wages, inflation, rent. it's not a place where farm workers can raise a family. >> reporter: you are seeing a number of them leave. >> yeah, they're leaving. they're going to the valley, to other states, especially into the central valley. >> reporter: once they're gone, there may not be enough left to do the work. in sonoma it is primarily wine. in other

time for your money watch report. european union hitting apple with a more than $2 billion fine. it says apple violated competition laws by favoring its own music, their streaming service over the rivals'. ruling says apple banned app developers from fully informing ios users about alternative cheaper music subscription services outside of the app. eu's antitrust enforcer says apple did this for nearly a decade resulting in significantly higher prices. today's fine follows a multi year investigation after a complaint in 2019 by spotify which is based in sweden. when you see sand, imagine water. if you live in, you can't reach the bottom. >> you dive in.

it is chilly. we can say it like it is. let's look at what's going on this morning in the bay area. we will talk about the tahoe region. man, was it a hectic weekend with one of the strongest storms in sometime impacting them there and us in the bay with the showers that we are still seeing. as we zoom in areas like san francisco and marin and throughout the head lands, light to moderate pockets of rain sweep throughout the bay area. that's the trend into the afternoon hours today with light on and off showers and snow starting to die down in the tahoe region. boy, were they dealing with gusty conditions, wind speeds up to 171 miles per hour at the peak of palasades over this weekend. to add to that, they were dealing with heavy snow. they're under a blizzard warning for highlighted zones and counties on the map. we will keep a close eye on them. as of the first of the month we were at 84% for sierra snowpack. after that weekend, it's going to improve a lot.

in the bay we are going to continue to see light on and off showers in the forecast throughout the afternoon hours today and a similar trend tomorrow. notice it is mostly to the north bay. we head into the evening hours tonight, early morning hours tomorrow, we'll see 100th of an inch of rain. this us we start to dry up. we are getting rid of the showers, starting to see mix of sun and clouds. by friday we are talking about beautiful sunshine around the corner. i will show you that on our seven-day forecast. the storm that swept throughout the bay area and throughout sierra, it was a cold front from the gulf of alaska. it brought in cooler weather. wednesday we were forecasting 60s and 70s. today we are lucky to see a 60 all the way to san jose with upper 50s widespread. so it is a cool day. reed, nicole, gianna, it makes sense what you said, it

is a chilly day already. we will see a similar trend in the afternoon hours throughout the next days. here is the gradual warm up back to the upper 60s by friday with the light at the end of the tunnel, more showers rolling in by saturday. let's talk about the freeways. we are off to a fairly decent start out of the south bay, marin, and you are making that commute, you are all right. we are starting to see brake lights and bulk of traffic in the altamont pass commute. i am going to zoom in on 580 which is one of our slowest spots. if your commute takes you from tracy to the altamont to the dublin interchange, this is where you will see most of the brake lights. it's slow getting towards north flynn. you will get a break as you head through. the rest of our bay area bridges and freeways are okay. 880 near oakland, not a bad commute. taking san mateo bridge, traffic west is getting crowded but moving at a pretty

welcome back. a live look outside on this monday morning. look at that from our treasure island cam towards the city skyline. there is that cloud and fog hanging out above the city skyline. if you live near i-80 in the sierra, this is what you are going to see as you head out. a live look at a lot of snow. there is plenty of it. i-80 near 267. friday cal trans shut down a stretch of interstate in the area from colfax to the nevada state line because of the snow. they said it will remain closed but it could open up sometime today. hopefully that is the case. a teen from napa continues to recover in the hospital after a catastrophic snow boarding accident. >> his life may forever be changed. >> he is hoping to inspire others and harness the power of community to go forward.
