let's start with breaking news. a live look in washington, d.c. where the supreme court has ruled, president donald trump or former president donald trump cannot be disqualified from running again for president because of the allegations surrounding his involvement in the january 6th capital assault . this unanimous decision found colorado supreme court ruling was wrong. skyler henry has a report from the supreme court. >> reporter: the nation's highest court ended former president trump a unanimous victory. ruling that colorado cannot keep him off the ballot for the 2024 presidential election. >> the rationale here really is, we don't want states to be able to do this. >> reporter: at issue was a narrow colorado supreme court decision in a case brought by voters, are doing trump should be removed from the states ballots because he committed insurrection on january 6th. and was disqualified under section 3 of the 14th amendment. which states, no person shall be a senator or representative in congress or

elected president or vice president or hold any office who took an oath and then engage in insurrection. >> we saw what happened when donald trump was on the ballot for president and lost. he refused to concede and ultimately incited a violent insurrection. >> reporter: during oral arguments in early february, the justices seemed skeptical weather stays can use the obscure constitutional provision to kick trump off the ballot, rather than leaving it up to congress . the court did weigh in on whether january 6th was in insurrection, with a former president trump engaged in it. the justices instead focused on the structural issue. whether courts can go on their own and enforce this civil war era provision and the unanimous answer was, no, they cannot.

>> without congress helping us figure out who engaged in in insurrection or whether or not there is a problem and whether or not someone has been found liable of guilty or whatever it is it is not up to one state to do it. congress needs to set the rules. >> reporter: and his social media post the current gop presidential front-runner called the court decision a big win for america. trump still faces criminal cases surrounding the events of january 6th. >> skyler henry reporting. a chase and deadly gunfire in santa rosa. the sonoma county sheriff's office tells us several deputy's responded to a report of a man brandishing a rifle at about 12:10 this morning. they gave chase and the suspect apparently fired shots with deputy's returning fire. the man was pronounced dead after his car crashed on the stony point road between bellevue avenue and todd road in west santa rosa. this is a live look at the investigation. four deputy's injured. one has a head injury in critical but

stable condition. the santa rosa police department will take over that investigation. chances are that road will be shut down for several hours. let's take a live look outside on this monday morning. the morning to those traveling on any roadways. this is the golden gate bridge. it is looking like that right now but will it stay that way throughout your workday? >> it is a cool and cloudy day as we kicked off this work week but at least the showers are starting to die down for us throughout the bay area. with cloudy conditions at times we could see light speckled showers sweep throughout our communities but if anything, it will amount close to 1/100th of an inch of rain and it will stay mostly isolated into the north bay heading into tuesday. these unsettled skies linger into wednesday and some offshore showers building in from offshore heading into our wednesday forecast, but by friday, excuse me, thursday into friday that is when we start to clear up . it will be a beautiful set up to kick off the weekend with sunnier skies and temperatures starting to warm up into the upper 60s. right now we are still talking about upper 50s for daytime highs and it is definitely a cool day for us today and the cold front this way and over

the weekend and gave us over an inch of rain in areas like san francisco and oakland. over two inches near nevada where daytime highs today are sitting in the 50s. down into the santa clara valley we are hitting 60 degrees today and in total we saw less than an inch of rainfall over the weekend near san jose, with close to the same amount near los gatos. take a look at the sierra, it is packed with snow. people are out and about. this is a live look at what is now open highway 50. the city of south lake tahoe saying there is heavy traffic on the highway toward meyers. they are urging people to wait out the storm before they tried to drive back to the bay area or anywhere else. if you end up being pulled out of the snow like this driver had to be, this was in the south lake tahoe area on the same highway, highway 50. the national weather service says the snow is accumulating fast between eight and 14 inches. chain controls continue. on top of that to the right side of your screen, i-80 is also shut down for the time being. caltrans said it

could open by today. it is not just the drivers on i-80 data stranded. people who just wanted to have fun skiing and now some of them are stuck in truckee. even the locals are starting to get a little fed up. those visiting say they were supposed to leave town on sunday but the weather is keeping them another day. families keeping warm and open restaurants braving the cold. one visiting family from the bay area said they come up every year for a family vacation and they were not going to let this storm stopped them from bonding and enjoying the time. >> i feel rewarded. we have to ski, snowboard and all the other stuff a lot of fresh powder. we get stuck going back home today but an extra day here is fantastic. >> kelsi thorud also stranded in tricky. come home when you can safely. she says the weather is expected to give way a little more today and hopefully roads can reopen so we get her back. in the sierra, people are digging out from the blizzard. the storm brought hurricane force winds and white out conditions and that sometimes can mean avalanche. the snow is more than seven feet deep . cbs

news carter evan is in truck you where mounds of snow have been accumulating since friday. >> reporter: the worst of it is behind us. the blizzard warning has expired but take a look at all of this snow. almost up to my head in truckee. they got about four feet when it was all said and done. up near donner summit, they got more than seven feet of snow. frozen in place. this is what interstate 80 looks like over the weekend. hundreds of cars and big rigs buried as a punishing blizzard dump feet of snow in a matter of hours. >> officers were going car by car and making sure people were okay. >> reporter: california highway patrol officer says, they went beyond the role of first responders. >> we were calling them the uber black-and-white. taking them to the store and getting them what they needed to be able to push through. backs it has been an all-out effort to clear all of this snow from the roadways to the roadways.

take a look at the train tracks over here covered with snow and now the solution, this giant snowplow train. this family open their door to a wall of snow sunday, now the big dig out begins. even as another storm approaches. >> bigger, fluffier snowflakes . >> reporter: we met the lead scientist at the berkeley snow lab near donner summit at the beginning of the blizzard. now he is stranded in more than five feet of snow. only reachable by phone. how will you get out? >> that is a good question. even though we were expecting a severe storm, i think it caught a number of people off guard. >> reporter: will most people look outside and see nothing but white, business owners in the town of truckee see green. what is all this snow going to do for business once the snow clears? >> we will be crazy busy. ski season will be extended at least through april or may. that is really good news for us. >> reporter: most of the ski resorts were close for the

blizzard and there are a lot of eager years and snowboarders who cannot wait to get out on the slopes today, even though the new storm is coming through at some point today. it will not be nearly as bad as the last one. it will however, probably dump another foot of snow in some areas. >> by some real estate. you might be there for a while. to keep up with coverage, stay with us on air and online. for a look at some other top stories. an additional suspect in the killing of officer, that brings the total number of murders to four. he was killed while responding to a break-in at a marijuana grow house in oakland. this is new, sebron russell faces a charge of murder. along with the three other defendants. russell was already facing a lesser charge, burglary. the four men are scheduled to appear later this morning for a preliminary hearing.

let's go to king city in monterey county where police are trying to track down the suspects who opened fire at an outdoor party. four people killed. authorities say three men wearing dark masks and clothing got out of a silver car and fired into the group. it happened about 6:00 last night. three victims founded in the front yard and a fourth died at the hospital. three others are wounded. look at this. altered in alameda. some say it's a political attack at the coast too far and is not truthful. and

listen up voters. you have one more day to decide before primary day in california. a chance to weigh in on big issues including which two senate candidates will advance to the general election. a poll by uc berkeley's institute of governmental study shows a republican could take the seat once occupied for decades by a democrat. we are talking about the late senator dianne feinstein. former l.a. dodger and republican, steve garvey, out in front this morning. congressman adam schiff is within the margin of error. the hill reporting garvey is now in a statistical tie with adam schiff in the senate race. let's talk about the only statewide measure on the ballot. governor gavin newsom's proposition 1. $46.3 billion bond to help the state

create more treatment beds for people struggling with addiction and mental illness. critics say california is done about $20 billion a trying to fight homelessness. and they say the issue has only gotten worse. we are watching that. there is a local race heating up in the east bay. the alameda county democratic central committee for district 18. because of endorsements, those winners have a great deal of power because those endorsements help swing important races and informed fundraising. as da lin shows us, some question whether attack ads have gone too far. >> reporter: east oakland mom pamela said she is running for democratic central committee position so her kids and other families can feel safe in oakland. >> i am tired of the conditions of the city. if things don't seem to be getting better, it is time for regular oaklanders and people to step up. >> reporter: when the political newcomer saw a attack ad that

central committee district 18 race will have huge power. the democratic committee hands out endorsements and he says endorsements lead to name recognition and donations. >> if you did not have an endorsement you would have to do this on your own. you have to go door to door knocking for endorsements and/or asking people for money. >> 85% of the people endorsed by this group , end up winning their elections. at the county, city levels. >> reporter: many candidates have openly demanded mario juarez pull the ad and apologize. including adrian. >> how do we build bridges? and how do you make sure there is also an ability to collaborate with one another? and i like that does not do that. we denounce pieces like that and we don't want to give it attention. >> reporter: pamela hopes voters will ignore the attack ad and focus on what they are voting for. >> i want to bring my kids to a park that is clean and that is not full of trash and filth.

compared to the past couple days . mostly isolated to the north bay and along the coastline but in total, anywhere throughout the bay area we could see about 1/100th of an inch of rainfall as we deal with a cloudy day today and tomorrow with more unsettled weather lingering into our wednesday forecast . light showers expected to move in from the south as we head into wednesday morning. it will start to dry up into thursday. thursday and friday are actually looking beautiful this week with light winds, dry skies, and sunny conditions . lingering into our friday forecast but i want to take it a step back and show you what our daytime highs are looking like today. all throughout the bay area as we head into this afternoon we have 50s and 60s and the forecast and after the cold front swept throughout the bay area over the weekend, it definitely left us with a lot cooler temperatures that will linger in the forecast today and tomorrow. 50s the redwood city. 60s near san jose. just last wednesday we were talking about 60s and 70s and the forecast . this is looking a

wall street ended last week with all green arrows and early this morning marcus kicked in the opposite direction to start the week. let's see what markets are right now affecting the wallet. we are in negative territory. it does not take much to have that go into positive but we are watching closely. we will have a full wrap up today at 3:00 to let you know how markets close affecting your financial future. trader joe's is recalling more than 60,000 pounds of its steamed chicken dumpling soup. the grocery chain says the dumplings could be contaminated with hard plastic. the products in the recall have a best buy date of march 7, 2025 . no illnesses are reported but anybody holding onto the product is urged to discarded or go back to trader joe's and handed to them and asked for a full refund. next, baby watch for this pair of bald eagles. we
