primaries and clearing the path for a november rematch. the key takeaways, the protest vote, and little excitement. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. super tuesday brought few surprises. nikki haley putting up a fight but proving to be no match for donald trump as he continues his march to the gop presidential nomination. the former president won almost all the republican contests with haley taking vermont. trump could secure the number needed to clinch the nomination by next week. on the democratic side, president biden won by huge margins without facing any significant challengers. and while he faces a lack of enthusiasm from some voters choosing uncommitted instead of incumbent. or the incumbent rather. skyler henry is joining us now from the nation's capitol with a breakdown on how it all played out. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you. speaking of that delegate count,

the former president appears to be steamrolling ahead, especially after these projected wins in delegate-rich states like texas and california. to your point about president biden, though he performed well yesterday, he still has his work cut out for him in terms of getting voters enthused about the part of a second term. >> this is a big one. >> reporter: a big night for former president donald trump and president joe biden on super tuesday with major wins in several states. the two frontrunners already shifting focus to a likely general election rematch. >> our poll numbers are so much higher than joe biden's. he's the worst president in the history of our country. >> reporter: in a statement, president biden described trump as, quote, driven by grievance and grift and determined to destroy our democracy. nikki haley picked up a projected win in vermont, though still not enough to put a dent in trump's massive lead. according to cbs news exits polls, immigration and the economy were top issues for gop voters.

>> i'm going to vote for anybody who says they're closing the border. >> reporter: biden again faced opposition from some voters over his handling of the israel-hamas war with tens of thousands in minnesota casting a protest vote of uncommitted. >> we did it so we can have a cease-fire now. >> reporter: and as this likely rematch continues to take shape, both of these frontrunners will be ramping up on the campaign trail. they will be making steps in -- stops in several battleground states including georgia later this week. >> before i let you go, i got to ask about one surprise last night. president biden lost the primary in the territory of american samoa to a little-known candidate. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: yeah, this jason ballmer from right up the road in baltimore here. 52 years old, businessman, entrepreneur, and in this case a politicians. -- a politician. here the thing about american samoa -- he'd never even been to the territory prior to the caucus, doing most of his work

through zoom town halls. now of the 91 votes in the territory he earned 50, president biden earned 41. this will hardly be any impact in terms of president biden's march toward securing the party's nomination, but is absolutely an interesting sort of twist after a not-so-surprising super tuesday, as you pointed yesterday. >> i've got do more reading on that, i find it fascinating. thank you so much. so in the race for california senate, cbs news is projecting that democratic congressman adam schiff and former major league baseball player republican steve garvey will advance to face each other in november. schiff and garvey were the top two vote-getters in yesterday's open primary for the late dianne feinstein's seat. the senator, rather. candidates regardless of parties compete. democratic representatives katie porter and barbara lee failed to advance. in texas cbs news is projecting that republican senator ted cruz will square off

against former nfl linebacker democratic congressman colin allred in november. cruz easily won yesterday's republican primary in his bid for re-election. allred won the democratic primary. he has an uphill climb, though. no democrat has won statewide office in texas in 30 years. in alabama it appears that attorney shomari figures and state house minority leader anthony daniels will advance to next month's democratic primary runoff in the newly redrawn second congressional district. a federal court ordered alabama to redraw the district map to better represent black voters. there will also be a republican primary runoff. and for a complete wrap of all super tuesday results and analysis, of course, where things stand and the race and where things stand for nikki haley, tune in to "cbs mornings" starting at 7:00 eastern. onto some other news now. a large storm soaking the southeast this morning will travel north, and it will bring

heavy rain into the northeast later today. the national weather service has issued a flood watch for more than 30 million people including new york city and boston. two to four inches of rainfall are expected along parts of the east coast. the heaviest amounts are expected in southern new england where the wet weather will last through thursday. and turning now to the israel-hamas war. three days of talks and no breakthroughs for a cease-fire and hostage release deal with the start of the muslim holy month of ramadan just days away. meanwhile, on israel's northern border with lebanon, the militant group hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets last night, some of which were intelligent -- were intercepted by israel's iron dome air defense system, as concerns grow of an escalation in hostilities. cbs' jarred hill is joining me to give us the latest from the leaf. -- middle east. what's going on? >> reporter: hey, there's always this concern about the escalation in the middle east. right now, today in particular, the biden administration is focused on whether they can get

this temporary cease-fire. we're starting to learn more about why there is no movement on that deal. another 36,000 meals floated from american military planes down to hungry crowds in gaza tuesday where more than half a million people are on the brink of starvation. this morning explosions continued at the border with israel as the white house pushes for a pause and release of hostages. >> it's in the hands of hamas right now. the israelis have been cooperating. there's an offer out there that's rational. > reporter: after days of talks and just four days until the start of the muslim holy month of ramadan, no movement on the deal. israel says it wants hamas to send a list of hostages who are still alive. hamas says first it needs a cease-fire. for now israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says he'll allow palestinians to access jerusalem's al aqsa mosque, one of islam's holiest sites.

all the while the u.s. looking for new ways to increase access to aid in gaza. >> including the maritime route. to that end, we're looking at both military and commercial options to move assistance by sea. >> reporter: on land, some of the most vulnerable crowded a neonatal unit in gaza. officials say they're caring for four times as many tiny patients as normal. as israel's army continues to hunt for hamas fighters it released video claiming troops have destroyed and sealed off hamas' largest tunnel ever. so egyptian officials have said that mediators will continue talks with hamas leaders today, but there is speculation that hamas isn't in any rush for a temporary deal before ramadan. senior officials saying they don't want a six-week cease-fire, they want this thing permanent. the question is who has the leverage to make whatever happen happen. >> all i know is that those hostages and the palestinians living in gaza and the families,

parachute to slow it down before the plane crashed yesterday in a residential area of washington state. police say two men were on a training flight when the plane's lone engine failed. the aircraft ended up in the woods near a residential neighborhood in bellevue. the two were able to climb out of the plane uninjured. well, haiti's leader is heading back home, and an update on a fire near detroit. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "detroit free press" reports the building where a massive fire set off a series of deadly explosions was not supposed to have butane and nitrous oxide tanks according to officials. monday's fire at a vaping supplier north of detroit sent gas canisters and debris flying as far as a mile away. a 19-year-old man a quarter mile away was killed when he was hit by the debris. officials say they knew vape products were stored in the building but not butane and nitrous oxide. the "associated press" says haiti's embattled prime minister

landed in puerto rico on his way home to try and quell a surge in violent attacks by armed gangs. ariel henri arrived yesterday. he was trying to gain support for a u.n.-backed security force when gangs freed thousands of inmates from two prisons last weekend. they've also launched other violent attacks in the capital of port-au-prince. a gang leader said that he wants to block henri's return and force him to resign. and "the miami herald" says florida governor ron desantis announced that he's sending state troopers to miami beach and other cities during spring break. desantis says 140 troopers will be deployed across the state to assist law enforcement agencies with anticipated spring break crowds this month. miami beach has imposed curfews during spring break the last three years to deal with huge crowds and violence. troopers will also be deployed to fort lauderdale, daytona beach, and panama city beach. still to come, help with your credit card bill.

anxiety ramps up ahead of today's congressional testimony from federal reserve chair jerome powell. the dow fell 404, the nasdaq dropped 267, and the s&p 500 shed 52 points. the biden administration is launching a major crackdown on what it calls credit card junk fees. the president announced a new rule that would cap late fees at $8, down from an average of $32. banks that charge more would need to show why. the u.s. chamber of commerce says it plans to file a lawsuit to stop the cap on fees. the clock is ticking on tiktok again. house lawmakers introduced a new bipartisan bill that would give china's byte dance six months to sell its stake in the social media platform or face a ban in the united states. tiktok says the move tramples first amendment rights and it denies sharing u.s. user data with the chinese government. speaking of social media, facebook, instagram, and messenger are back up this

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ check out this rescue of a dog stranded on a frozen lake in minnesota. an alert citizen spotted a border collie named honey stuck on the ice monday. the sheriff's deputy used a kayak to get the dog and pulled it to safety. honey was reunited with her owner. deputies are calling it a minnesota winter version of a "baywatch" water rescue. in what's being called an incredibly rare event, a gray whale that's been extinct in the atlantic ocean for more than 200 years was spotted off the coast of new england. scientists were flying 30 miles south of nantucket on friday when they saw the whale.

it typically lives in the northern pacific ocean. researchers believe melting ice due to climate change has allowed the whales to pass through the northwest passage connecting the pacific and the atlantic oceans. in an unprecedented move, the dartmouth men's basketball team voted to form the first union for college athletes. the players voted 13-2 in favor of joining the service employees international union which already represents some dartmouth workers. the school has appealed saying the players are students and not employees. the case could wind up in court. cleveland-born nfl greats travis and jason kelce went back home to ohio for a special tribute on the basketball court. the cleveland cavaliers celebrated the brothers with a souvenir bobblehead giveaway last night as they took on the boston celtics. the bobbleheads show travis and jason in the teams' jerseys holding basketballs, and the brothers were court side cheering on the cavs.
