from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. right now, chopper is live as crews in san francisco have just shut off a huge water main break on 35th avenue and wawona street . this is near the

pinelake area. let us show you what it looked like 30 minutes ago. you can see it. that tower of water leaving a muddy mess in the neighborhood. customers and the surrounding area may experience low or no water pressure at all. here is a look at the water main break from the ground. viewer shared this video on social media. it was shooting way up. crews are assessing risk to the structure and to residents who live nearby. back here live at the scene, we are looking live at the damage this water main break caused before crews stopped the water from gushing out. we spoke to neighbors who heard they save -- who said they heard the pipe burst. >> initially, i walk out to my side yard and i heard a crack. then, a boom, loud noise. i just don't know how much the soil will get eroded from the water washing down the hill. we may lose the street if they don't shut it down soon. >> that is causing a muddy mess. crews are able to shut it

down. no word on what cause the break. crews are asking people to avoid that area. this is not the first time there has been a massive water main break at stern grove. back in august 2021, officials had to cancel the last stern grove concert of the season esther -- after the park was flooded with water and mud. structure good afternoon. i'm ryan yamamoto. we are following developing news out of pacifica. cabrillo elementary just reopened following a threat that sent the threat -- sent to the school early this morning into a lockdown. the district alerted police that the campus was closed pending a search. police swept the school and gave the all clear to reopen unknown. school officials say students are allowed back on campus at this hour to make sure they have access to their lunch. the faa is investigating after a united air lines jet rolled off the runway into the grass in houston, texas this

morning. the plane had just landed at george bush intercontinental airport and was turning onto a taxiway when it happened. there were 160 passengers and six crew members on board. no one was hurt. it looks like it lost some of its landing gear. a live look at sfo where boeing and united airlines want to know why a wheel fell off one of their planes headed to japan. >> there is a tire going down the runway. >> it happened just after the flight took off around 11:20 yesterday morning. camera capture the moment one of the rear tires fell off. the boeing 777 was carrying 249 passengers and crew. the decision was made to reroute it to lax. a new plane then took those passengers safely to japan. back at sfo, they had to deal with collateral damage because that tire and wheel fell straight from the sky and onto several cars in an employee parking lot. >> you say the wheel fell off

from where? >> a plane. >> what the [ bleep ]? >> i was so lucky. just two cars away. >> you can see the one silver car just completely totaled. william was parked two slots away from the car that was crushed. luckily, no one was in and that the time. no word on why that wheel fell off but we do know this particular jet has been serviced for more than 20 years. this follows another mid air scare on monday. boeing 737 engine caught fire after bubblewrap was sucked into the engine during its flight to fort myers. officials are investigating the cause of this latest incident. this happening with a boeing plane. now to berkeley where some parents who have been calling for more security at cal are putting their own money up to provide it and raise tens of

thousands of dollars to put private security guards on patrol. this happening on the south side of campus where the dorms are. we spoke with a student who has been wanting to see a change after being robbed at gunpoint. >> rebekah has been studying at cal since 2018. at first, it felt like normal life on campus until recently. >> i parked in my driveway. as i was unlocking the door, two people approached me from behind. one came to the drivers seat, one came to the passenger seat. >> rebecca has been robbed not once, but twice off campus. she asked us to protect her identity by concealing her face. the robbers stole her personal belongings and her car but they took something much greater, her shot at a normal college life. >> i feel like when i am walking the streets, i am always scared. i am looking around. i am always running to my car and locking it immediately. it is not really a sustainable lifestyle.

>> it is not a concern for just students. >> sagar jethani who has twin boys, took matters into his own hands. >> despite repeated entries from parents and now students as well to take more substantial action, we are going to act. we are going to do what needs to be done to keep our families safe. >> parent group safe bears raised money to hire these private security guards to patrol near campus houd on foot few weeks. after that, the hope is that the university will take over. >> we want to turn up the heat with the administration. we want to show we are not content to wait forever to have these safety ambassadors deployed. >> the patrols are not armed but they have radios and are trained to de-escalate conflicts and call police if necessary. >> i guess i just wonder what their approach is supposed to

president also took on his likely 2024 gop rival, former president donald trump but he did not mention trump by name, instead referring to him as my predecessor 13 times. >> what has happened now is a horror show . spectrum slammed the address on social media calling it, quote, an angry, polarizing and hate filled speech. structure president biden returns to the campaign trail today with an event planned in philadelphia. he will hold dueling rallies in georgia tomorrow. your pg&e bill will soon go up. regulators approved a rate hike yesterday. the average customer will pay another $62 month starting in may. that is on top of the last rate hike in january. on top of pg&e's $2.2 billion profit last year. the utility says it needs the money to pay for safety upgrades it has already made. not a good sign for the worriers. the team could be

>> a warming planet should mean less snow. this was the lollapalooza of snowstorms. >> it does highlight this conundrum that we see, climate change causing two counteracting forces at the same time. >> cold, arctic air made a beeline to california. on the way, it traveled over the warming pacific ocean, warming due in part to climate change. the higher temperatures in the ocean and the air allowed the atmosphere to hold more water. >> the ocean temperatures are warm right now. this cold mass of air that moved down from the bering strait has picked up heat and picked up moisture. >> it created a warmer, wetter storm that was still below freezing. jones is now keeping his eye on the snowpack and with good reason. february was the ninth straight month to be the warmest on record globally.

the reason why we have drier conditions. the winds are relatively light. that is worth mentioning too . it is beautiful along the coast but once we had into our forecast tomorrow, you might want to grab the umbrella, especially if you live up in the north bay. we will see a splash of showers from that 10:00 hour all the way into lunchtime . it dries up into the overnight hours but we are left with cloudy skies. that is system number one. the second one will pack its punch more and it will cool our temperatures down. another cold front building and from offshore sunday into that 3:00 hour. it sweeps throughout san francisco around 6:00, 7:00 and then we are left with unsettled weather into next week. lots of changes around the corner. how do we start off this forecast? dry, sunny conditions. that is the forecast today. take advantage

of the day today, get out there and find a new trail. even though we are seeing low 60s in the coastline forecast, at least it is sunny. all the way down to the santa clara valley we go, we would not be shocked to see 70s today. the most part, upper 60s near san jose and los gatos. i want to show you the next seven days because we have a big warm up around the corner. we have a lot of days to get to that point. with unsettled weather in the forecast sunday, monday, tuesday, we are still seeing cloudy skies and another chance of showers by next tuesday. a live look at chase center where it was a rough night for the warriors as they blew a 13 point lead to the chicago bulls yesterday. late in the fourth quarter, steph curry had to leave the game because he twisted his ankle right there. coach steve kerr did not give an update after the game ,

on this international women's day, we want to highlight one of san francisco's best known murals in the mission district. you can see the mural on the women's building located on 18th street. it is a woman led nonprofit arts and education center. this mural was painted in 1994 and is called woman teacher of peace, painted by a bay area artist, or several artists, and to share cases the brave work of women who broke barriers and fought for their communities around the world. there is a milk shortage at

the nation's oldest milk bank in san jose and the nonprofit says they are in desperate need for donors. we spoke with a new mom who is experiencing firsthand the importance of donated milk. >> they say breast is best but what happens when there is not enough? as milk banks do what they shortage in supply, one nursing mother says new moms should have access. >> what could be more peaceful than the sight of a baby enjoying some fresh milk? it is the kind of precious moments new mother jaclyn must really has always dreamed of. she loves motherhood and forming memories with her son but she says the challenges with breast-feeding came as a surprise to her. >> i was a bit arrogant going into having a baby. i just assumed that breast-feeding would come so naturally. >> according to mother's milk bank, a nonprofit that provides infants in need with human milk, jaclyn is not alone. the demand for human milk is ever present and access to those

peaceful milk moments have become a challenge. the milk bank is dealing with an urgent donor shortage. >> it is critical that the mother's milk bank has enough donations to help save fragile babies in intensive care units. >> the mother's milk bank is inviting lactating mothers to participate in milk meet ups, encouraging those who are able to donate. all milk is tested before distribution. the benefits of natural breast milk are emphasized. >> human milk has all the essential nutrients the baby needs to thrive, grow, develop property -- properly. >> vulnerable groups depend on breast milk for their survival. jaclyn says if she had a surplus supply, she would have loved to donate. she has to switch between breast and bottle and realizes the great value the banks have.

>> it is wonderful and it makes perfect sense because there are some women who overproduce breast milk and there are some women who don't make enough, which is in my case. i think it is a wonderful opportunity for milk not to be wasted, for women to help each other. >> breast milk is known to have exceptional benefits for newborns including protection from diseases and infections. >> every single ounce is so important. moms who have gone through that know what that is like . it is very, very valuable. >> the kind of valuable she believes every mother should have access to. up next, the toilet that made national headlines. it is finally here in san francisco. why this the rhône has a lot of people talking.
