devastating fire while taking on a new mission for campers. do something together to show people this is what small businesses, this is what women do. this is how women show up every day in your life. >> it takes a lot to own a business. this group of women knows that. they're standing together in oakland. for better or worse, we are all living in oppenheimer's world. >> hollywood's biggest night and a summer blockbuster makes a lot of noise. good morning. i am nicole zaloumis. happy monday. you might be coming off of the oscars feeling groggy or the fact that we lost an hour this weekend. i am feeling it. >> i am gianna franco. this morning, i was like how is this possible? it's supposed to be 4:00. it is 5:00. >> i would like to thank the academy and not the clock. good morning. i am reed cowan. there is a lot to talk about. usually we talk about the weather but let's start with traffic.

we had a traffic alert where lanes were shut down on 80. i did learn from chp that this was due to a deadly crash. you are looking live from one of our salesforce cams. they just opened lanes about ten minutes ago. it happened about 2:19 this morning. sadly one person was reportedly hit by a vehicle and died. that is why they had lanes shut down for the investigation. it was closed for at least a couple hours. now hopefully things will be moving a little bit better. we'll keep a close eye on that. that is the area west bound as you come off the bay bridge heading into san francisco. that can really get backed up. again, it is looking okay for now. from the north bay on my drive, i saw wet roads, north necessarily a complete wash out. we did get moisture in the north bay. let's talk about what mother nature has in store for the rest of the day and the

week. let's take a quick look at our first alert doppler where it is very active for some of us, especially in the south bay. for others, we are probably thinking a splash of showers? what is she talking about? our friends near san jose stretching to the east bay near livermore are waking up to light rain in our local communities. same trend along the foothills near saratoga to milpitas. roads will be slick for the next hours. if you are just waking up and getting ready for the day, this is light rain in the grand scheme of things. you honestly don't need the umbrella as we head into the afternoon hours. in the sierra, we will talk more about them. near south lake tahoe, donner pass, i-80, it is snowing and we will see more in the next couple days with the exact system. sunnier skies in the north bay by 8:30, cloudy

into the south bay and east bay as well. this afternoon, a mix of sun and clouds. we are starting to see more rainfall tonight at 8:00 or 9:00. it sweeps throughout the north bay. i want to show you what it is looking like for daytime highs. stretching widespread, below average. upper 50s, lower 60s from oakland to concord. a similar trend in the santa clara valley where it is currently raining. i will have more coming up in just a bit. >> thank you so much. your community station looking live at oakland and following your neighbors' fight to clean up streets. the problem, abandoned cars sitting in some cases for a year or more. neighbors tell us they've asked the city to do something and the city has done nothing. some are going to the extreme of tagging vehicles with profanity hoping somebody will notice. da lin with how they hope the accounts dream move will push the city of oakland

extreme move will push the city to act. >> reporter: someone abandoned this suv about a year ago. someone dropped off this hyundai sonata on the same block roughly four months ago. >> embarrassing. >> reporter: not just an eye sore and blind but with multiple apartment buildings, they're taking up valuable real estate. >> hard to find parking. >> reporter: they're parked in front of 2905. a neighbor says she reported the cars to 311 last year but the city has not taken action. tagged names and bad words on the car for attention. >> i don't take it personal. i understand the frustration. there is only so much we can do. >> the staff received the

complaint two weeks ago and flagged transportation department which handles the vehicles. he says many city contracted tow yards are full and they're overwhelmed by the amount of abandoned, stolen cars. >> some of the locations with the towed vehicles are full. we are trying to identify other properties. >> reporter: the city prioritizes abandoned cars that block driveways and streets given lack of staffing and resources. one city worker tells me these cars may have to wait longer. police report last year they recorded almost 15,000 stolen cars. >> we'll be there tomorrow morning, even if i have to get a private company to get it towed, i will get them towed. >> reporter: neighbors say they welcome any help to clean up their neighborhood . >> neighbors say the cars aren't just empty. they've

been home to the homeless in some cases making some people say they feel unsafe. time for a look at other top stories. two minors facing gun charges in santa rosa. special enforcement police say they found several juveniles standing outside a motel 6 on cleveland avenue saturday. officers said they smelled marijuana and did a search. two had loaded revolvers and booked them into juvenile hall. today marks ramadan and there is no cease fire in the war between israel and hamas. netanyahu is pushing forward with plans to invade rafah. new help is on the way for people of gaza. u.s. military ship is sailing to the region carrying equipment to build a temporary pier to speed up delivery of aid. the conflict taking hold of the academy awards last

night. >> cease fire now! >> protesters gathered blocking roads and slightly delaying the start of the ceremony as nominees arrived on the red carpet. throughout the show some celebrities wore red pins calling for ceasefire. in the bay area people in palo alto gathered for a run for their lives event to call for release of hostages still held by hamas. >> i am filled with so much hope that the world has not forgotten them. we will not forget them. and we will not stop fighting for their release. >> according to hamas run health ministry, of the more than 30,000 palestinians who have been killed since war began, 20,000 are women and children. >> free, free, free palestine! >> that's one of the reasons protesters came out in san francisco last night outside of the palace hotel. inside the jewish community relations council was holding their

that have someone in their household with disabilities. just a free day of fun to experience camp and be together in a camp environment. >> guests enjoyed usual camp activities from tie dying shirts to mountain hikes to archery which this 11-year-old decided was harder in real life than in video games legend of zelda. >> i am exceptional in both of those games. >> then 9-year-old max was determined to perfect the aerodynamics of a paper airplane. >> i would think they would fly better. i will improve them because i want to be an engineer and like to build things. >> here they know something about overcoming challenges. almost the entire camp burned down during the 2017 tubs fire.

it was a horrible experience and it also gave everyone a chance to reexamine their mission. >> there are things that are accessible. it doesn't mean they're inclusive. it doesn't mean it is meant for people to feel a part like they belong. >> soil was moved to flatten the common areas to make it easier for wheelchairs and stairs are to the side and ramps are front and center encouraging everyone to use the same route. >> seeing families able to easily get their child where they need to go and it doesn't take three people like it used to get them where they need to go. people that want to be on a ramp because they want to be on a ramp can be on a ramp. it's awesome. >> we rearranged all the things we did and are building back in dignity in mind. not just inclusion but really a sense of belonging and dignity. i think it's revolutionized who we are as an organization. >> that was something this

he literally stumbled through a waterfall hidden on the side of a slope and landed in a natural hot spring below. he captured the whole thing on his go pro and he was able to get out. there was lots of running water rushing over him. he was able to go slowly we skis climbing up. what a moment. watching this, the first thing my head went to was how cold that water can be. it was a hot spring and he was able to climb out successfully. that was a wild video. in the bay area we are talking about snow, skiing conditions. into the sierra we go, i want to dive into that. as we wake up, it is cloudy, cool and we are seeing showers forming and moving to the east. all the way to the sierra, snow is falling from donner to south

lake tahoe and they'll see more snow into the next couple days. not much, close to four to five inches from donner to kirk wood. there are under a winter weather advisory. in the bay, we will rule out chances of showers after tomorrow. tomorrow will be the last chance for the rest of the week. we have a huge warm up around the corner which is exciting. it will feel more spring like, plenty sunshine throughout the bay area around the corner. we see mostly clear conditions throughout today when it comes to rain. tonight, another ban of rain from offshore. it mostly stays to the north bay. we'll watch that sweep throughout the bay area in the overnight as many of us are sleeping. we wake up with light scattered showers and a clear up around the corner into our wednesday, thursday, friday forecast with upper 70s for daytime highs heading into the weekend's forecast. daytime highs today,

just imagine, we can get through today and pull out tank tops and shorts around the corner. man is the weather going to look really nice into the weekend's forecast. for now you will want to grab the jacket. these are daytime highs, upper 50s and lower 60s once again. san jose, it is still cool and cloudy all the way to our east bay too. i will have more on that in a bit. g. >> thank you. let's talk about the freeways. some good news as you head out, we are looking pretty good overall. we did start with a traffic alert but they've opened lanes as you make your way into san francisco. at one point all lanes were shut down but now everything is clear. an easy ride as we head out and about. a live look at the bay bridge, traffic is moving at the limit. metering lights will be turned on in about 15 minutes. we'll keep an eye on

john cena. >> costumes, they are so important. >> randolph won best supporting actress for her role as grieving mother in the hold over. >> for so long, i have always wanted to be different and now i realize, i just need to be myself. and i thank you. i thank you for seeing me. >> brother sister team grabbed the oscar for best song for what was i made for from barbie. barbie actor ryan gosling didn't win an oscar but wowed the audience bringing out slash from guns and roses with his performance of "i'm just king." if you have not seen that, you should check it out. there was anticipation

about ryan gosling performing that song and he delivered with that performance. >> back to the skit with john cena, a pretty daring stunt from the wrestler turned actor. >> yes. let's go back to that skit. a lot of people are talking about that this morning too. that's because it was actually a skit that played off of a memorable oscars moment that happened 50 years ago when a streaker ran on stage. so there was a reason why john cena came out with no clothes on. they were going back. >> flash back. >> decades to the skit. >> a flash back i think we can say we all enjoyed. >> i don't think the streaker back in the day had the six pack. i could not look away. >> i could not look away either. >> when the streaker ran across back in the day, the host said we would like to thank that man for his short comings. yes i do

to stay for now in the bay. the latest storm is rolling over northern california. let's take another live look. this is in the sierra, interstate 80 at castle peak. snowpack is building up and it's going to be slick driving for people returning home from tahoe. it was slick driving for me headed into the city from the east bay. i had to take it slow. >> as rainfalls here, snow falls in the sierra and behind me. you can see it on first alert doppler. waking up and heading out from donner to south lake tahoe, light snow starting to accumulate throughout the next couple days. they'll get an additional four to six inches in total but it won't amount to much more. really what's happening after today and tomorrow is we experience a big warm up and dry up for us widespread throughout california. this light drizzle we see from santa cruz and monterey to the sierra, this is one of the last systems we will

see in sometime. near saratoga, we woke up to light rain about 20 minutes ago. that cell is tracking near milpitas, near livermore. in the next 10, 15 minutes you will see more of a blanket of showers in your community waking up and heading out. today and tomorrow, rainy days and then we clear up quick as we head into wednesday, thursday, lasting into the weekend. i want to show you what's going on for daytime highs before we dive into the week with a beautiful warm up. we are talking about upper 50s near santa rosa, san francisco, low 60s for daytime highs near concord and antioch. in the communities to the east bay, down to the santa clara valley we will be warming to the upper 70s as early as friday with plenty sunshine around the corner. let's talk about the freeways. a live look of the bay bridge toll plaza, there are some slick surfaces so be

careful. we are off to a good start. there are no metering lights yet. likely those will be turned on in the next few minutes. so far, you don't have a lot of brake lights or issues to deal with. the area in and out of the city, it is looking good. this morning we did have a traffic alert where lanes were shut down west bound 80 near fourth street. all clear. you might have wet weather. san mateo bridge, traffic is pretty light in both directions. trouble in the skies, boeing is target of a department of justice investigation. it stems from the incident in january when a door plug broke off in the middle of an alaska airlines flight. it's been a tough week for united airlines too. several planes have had problems including one that had a tire fall off shortly after take off at sfo. this is as busy spring travel season is about ready to kick off.

the last week has seemed like quite a bumpy ride for air travel especially for united. it begs question are incidents happening more frequently or are people paying more attention to them? a commercial airline pilot with decades of experience tells me it is likely the latter. >> look at the back of the plane. >> over the course of a week, six united airlines flights have had problems. some took off and turned around. others had to make emergency landings. two left sfo and were diverted to l.a.x., one for hydraulics problem and the other had a tire fall off. >> a tire going down the run way. >> that's never a good look. >> a pilot for a major airline and major lecturer at san jose state. it was a turbulent week for united. >> i don't see a rise in the incidents occurring. what i am seeing is increased interest in the incidents occurring. >> reporter: he says pilots are

trained to deal with unexpected and uncommon. >> we spend 90% of training time working on things that may only occur 1% of the time. even though it appears united is having a bad week, in reality, everything is working at united airlines because everyone is able to get back on the ground in one piece and unfortunately with a little bit disruption but able to carry on their trip. >> he did say a mid air engine fire and the wheel debacle are incredibly rare situations. >> the thing that is more striking than the actual incident is that the two rare incidents happened in such close proximity of time. >> reporter: miller believes dramatic alaska airlines incident recently sparked higher level of interest and scrutiny in airline operations but thinks it really started in 2018 after the first deadly crash involving a boeing max jet. some travelers aren't discouraged. >> you think about how often

those things happen and you have to believe that they're rare. >> because of the changes made in safety tracking and safety management systems over the last 20 years in the united states, we have enjoyed the longest stretch of airline safety in the history of the country. even with the incidents, i see that trend continuing. as we build those programs, airline travel will become safer in the coming years. >> united said the incidents it experienced over the last week with distinct and unrelated to one another. let's go to where a family of three walked away from a plane crash with minor cuts and scratches thanks to a parachute. the plane lost power minutes after take off. this is the photo of a massive exterior parachute that slowed the fall. some say the parachute is the reason everybody on board is

alive. getting ready to host vice president of the united states, kamala harris is part of a nationwide tour on the heels on the president's state of the union to fund raise as election season is in full swing. president joe biden is on the road as his likely opponent in the race for the presidency is keeping the road hot, both are rallies over the weekend in georgia. voters talking about immigration. also mississippi and washington state holding primaries tomorrow as biden and trump work to hit number of delegates needed to secure the respective party's nominations store presidency. businessed in oakland partnering on piedmont for women's history month. many women owned businesses are teaming up to support each other and provide discounts to customers throughout march. >> shawn chitnis joins us on how it started and how it is going to work. >> this is really cool because we are talking about more than 30 women working together, 20

said it was a no brainer. >> i knew there were a lot of women owned businesses but i didn't realize quite how many there were. i love that. i think it's great. >> all month, offering discounts to bring more people to the shopping district and promoting each other as a collection of stores. >> i want to do something together to show people this is what small izzo, what women do. this is how women show up every day. >> mica helped come up with the idea of a pass tort encouraging customers to walk from one store to the other while shopping. she owns a restaurant also on piedmont. each about us is giving daily deals and contributing raffle prizes. >> i am incredibly aware of what has been done for me by the women before me. >> allison says any extra effort can only help regardless of where you are located and how long you have been at it.

building bridges between generations. a college in new york asking retired seniors to live and study on campus. michael george spoke with students young and old about whether there is a divide between generations. meet howard and judy, they're college seniors of a different type. the couple in their 80s lives in a retirement community built in the middle of campus. >> it's been fabulous. >> they chose an apartment at broad view at purchase college because they love learning and new experiences. >> it's been wonderful. we walk all over the campus and we go everywhere. >> right, left, right. >> seniors on campus can take salsa lessons taught by the 19-year-old sophomore. they can go to school events and concerts and even take classes. >> we are taking a class on the

history of africa. many people ask why did you choose that class? simple answer. we don't know anything about africa. we felt we would like to learn about it. >> when you take a class, does this mean you are having exams? >> no. that's why we take the class. >> attends classes with some elderly residents and says she's learning from them. >> i feel like the senior citizens in the class have a lot to add because they have more experience in the world. >> three months since the opening more than half of the 200 senior living units are occupied. they haven't seen wild college parties. in fact, students have been great neighbors. >> we have learned that living end generationally works well. i think it is keeping us younger. >> left, right, left. >> redefining retirement and proving you are never too old to learn something new. 75% of the profits from the
