right now at 5:30, the scot peterson case back in the headlines 20 years after it captured the attention of the nation, the crucial hearing scheduled tomorrow. a new push for police in california schools, why districts could be forced to put armed officers on patrol. and one east bay community fighting to clean up streets littered with abandoned cars. neighbors in oakland tell us some of those cars have been sitting there for a year and their pleas for help haven't gotten them anywhere. da lin shows us some residents are now turning to an unusual tactic to get the city to pay attention. >> reporter: neighbor dijonae cunningham said someone abandoned this suv in front of her apartment building about a

year ago and someone dropped off this hyundai sonata. they're taking up valuable real estate. they are parked in front of 2905 bonaire street in the fruitvale district. one neighbor said she reported the cars to 311 last year, but the city has not taken action. two weeks ago one fed up neighbor tagged councilman noel gallo's family and bad words on the cars. >> i don't take it personal and understand the frustration, but there's only so much i can do and we can do. >> reporter: councilman gallo said his staff received the complaint from the neighbors two weeks ago and immediately flagged the transportation department which handles these vehicles, but he says many city-contracted tow yards are full and the department is overwhelmed by the amount of

abandoned and stolen cars. >> some of the locations where they're towing vehicles are full and so we're trying to identify other properties that we can tow the vehicles to. >> reporter: the city prioritizes abandoned cars that block driveways and streets. given the lack of staffing and resources, one city worker tells me these cars may have to wait longer. oakland police report lasts year they recorded almost 15,000 stolen cars. >> i will there be tomorrow morning and even if i have to get a private company to get it towed, i will get them towed. >> reporter: neighbors say they welcome any help to clean up their neighborhood. >> yeah. the street sweeper will be able to clean the street. >> neighbors say the cars aren't just sitting empty and that people are using them for shelter. some new details on that breaking story we mentioned earlier about a stolen car with a child inside, we can now tell you this scene in oakland is

related to that case, police telling us a person has been detained and we just learned this all started in san pablo. the call came in as a kidnapping around 1:30 this afternoon. the vehicle and child were apparently found in richmond 20 minutes later and a short time ago police were investigating the kidnapping coming to this oakland neighborhood. we'll bring you more details as they come into our newsroom. scot peterson heads back to court tomorrow morning as he fights to overturn his conviction for the murders of his pregnant wife laci peterson and their unborn son 20 years ago. the los angeles innocence project hopes a judge will allow them to bring additional evidence and dna testing that could clear his name. peterson is serving a life sentence after his death sentence was overturned in 2020. he's expected to appear remotely in san mateo county superior court. a fairfield police officer is accused of exchanging

inappropriate texts and photos with two underage high schoolers. a parent of one of the students at rodriguez high school notified police who then arrested officer james lewis after an independent investigation by the solano county district attorney's office major crimes task force. lewis is on administrative leave facing charges, including contacting or communicating with a minor with the intent to commit a sex crime. a new proposal in sacramento would require public and charter schools to have an armed officer on campus whenever students are present. current state law allows school districts that option. the new bill authored by a southern california republican would make it a mandate. if it becomes law, the state would reimburse school districts for the cost. attorney general rob bonta says the state is making progress taking guns away from people who shouldn't have them. he released a new report on the armed and prohibited

persons system, apps for short. it shows more than 1,400 firearms were seized in 2023 from people prohibited from owning them. that includes dozens of ghost guns. >> the goal is simple here. keep the number of illegally armed individuals as low as possible. so by removing guns from the hands of those who shouldn't have them, we keep that number low. >> bonta says agents did compliance checks on more than 25,000 people, the most since the program started. he also says for a second year in a row more people were removed from the list than added. elsewhere today a federal judge blocked california's law limiting gun purchases to one every 30 days. the law was meant to cut down on so-called straw purchases, when someone buys a gun for someone else who isn't legally allowed to. the judge said the law is unconstitutional based on a 2022 u.s. supreme court ruling. that decision says new gun laws must fit with the historical

tradition of regulation here in the u.s. airbnb will soon ban indoor security cameras to protect renters' privacy. cameras used to be allowed in common areas like hallways and living rooms, but starting april 30th they won't be allowed inside at all. it comes after numerous reports of renters finding hidden cameras. the new policy still allows outside cameras, but hosts have to disclose their use and locations before guests book a stay. it was a rough day on wall street for the parent company of facebook. stock in meta platforms fell more than 4% after former president trump falled facebook "an enemy of the people." the social media platform banned trump two years after the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. investors are worried trump could target the company if he wins another term in the white house. let's look at the closing numbers from wall street today. the dow up slightly while the

we all know official photos of britain's royal family get a lot of attention, but this latest one has prompted an apology from katherine, princess of wales. several major news agencies withdrew the image claiming it had been manipulated and the question now is why? >> reporter: the royal photo of kate and her three children is the first official image we've seen of the princess since her abdominal surgery nearly two months ago when it was splashed across front pages something wasn't quite right and kate is now apologizing for

the confusion, posting on social media monday "like many amateur photographers, i do occasionally experiment with editing." that editing led several news outlets, including reuters and the associated press, to pull the photo from publication, as they have strict rules about altering images. agencies pointed to a missing part of princess charlotte's sleeve and the misalignment of kate's zipper. the snap taken by prince william was released by mother's day on the uk and meant to reassure the public about kate's health. >> i think what was designed to be an informal shot of family life has sadly and unfortunately backfired on her quite badly at a time when she probably needs peace and quiet. >> reporter: the princess of wales made her last official appearance on christmas day, attending church with the other royals. the palace has kept details about her surgery private, leading to rampant rumors about what's going on.

with king charles being treated for cancer and prince william attending royal events alone in recent weeks, the photoshop fiasco is just the latest chapter in the book of royal speculation. >> now while palace officials won't reveal the reason for kate's surgery, prince william and kate's office confirmed it is not cancer-related. the l.a. lakers are promising to fix several errors on the kobe bryant statue outside their arena. the statue of the late nba superstar was unveiled last month. it includes the box score from his legendary 81-point game against the raptors. the problem is that two of his teammates' names along with the word decision are misspelled. there are also some formatting issues to it. this is the first of three statues planned to honor the lakers legend. the happiest place on earth is looking to get even bigger. disneyland is looking

paul, we know for the most part the rain has been good for the bay area, but i think a lot of us are ready for a break, like a real break. >> i think we were tired of the rain happening every weekend to begin 2024. >> yes. >> this weekend we had a little bit of rain, but it was a bit more polite, fell mostly last night. there were some showers in the north bay to start the day on saturday. otherwise the weekend turned out okay. we have one more batch of rain this evening into tonight, gray skies much of the day tomorrow, but the dry break begins after

that, wednesday onward dry in the extended forecast, warmer temperatures, also a noticeable offshore breeze kicking in, especially wednesday night into thursday and a much higher pollen count. i'll show you that momentarily, the price we pay for dry weather this time of year. now there is rain trying to hit the ground in the north bay, looks impressive around st. helena. as this moves through sonoma county, the sensors are only picking up barely a trace of rainfall. a lot of this is evaporating before it reaches ground level but helps pave the way for the eventual showers lurking off to our northwest. showers become much more likely late evening and overnight, light to moderate rain, no flooding possible, still wet, probably a splashy drive to work tomorrow morning even as showers will be starting to wind down as the sun comes up tuesday and by midday while there will be a lot of cloud cover overhead, there won't be much moisture left in the clouds. i think the showers should be done by

lunchtime tuesday. we'll even see sunshine in the afternoon and then a few passing clouds heading through tuesday night into wednesday, back to a lot of sunshine wednesday afternoon and we should be really warming up rapidly as we head through the latter half of the workweek. total rainfall tonight is modest, about a half inch in the high end and some spots barely picking up more than a couple hundredths inch of total rainfall. it's going to be another snowmaker for the sierra, another several inches of snow possible on some of the higher peaks, slippery conditions on u.s. 50 and i-80, but not disastrous travel conditions into the sierra tonight and tomorrow. a lot of clouds now over san jose, some sunshine still sneaking through, temperature up to 64 degrees there. otherwise it was a mix of upper 50s and low 60s, a little below average for this time of year. temperatures tonight only drop down to a mix of upper 40s and low 50s. that's above normal. the cloud cover blocks sunshine for most of the day tuesday. that keeps temperatures it from warming up much, a couple degrees below

normal, mid-60s around san jose, 65 degrees the warm spot across the entire bay area. pretty much everybody else is in the low 60s, mid-60s for redwood city, only upper 50s along the coast for half moon bay, san francisco right around 60 degrees, 2 degrees below normal. we can handle it. temperatures in the north bay reaching into the low 60s. temperatures will jump beginning wednesday. let's look at the ten-day temperature outlook for san jose and the really warm stretch of weather toward the end of the workweek into the weekend and early next week, san jose topping out in the mid- to upper 70s, 10 to 15 degrees above average. the price we pay is the elevated pollen count. one more day in the low-medium category and then towards the top of the scale wednesday, thursday, again on friday, juniper, alder and ash as the top three allergens, but there's all sorts of stuff that will be blowing around. while we have gusty winds, the relative humidity levels wouldn't be very low. that combined with the amount of moisture the fire

fuels absorbed will help us avoid significant fire threat even as gusty offshore winds develop wednesday into thursday. here's the seven-day forecast. inland temperatures warm up and stay mild through the end of the workweek into the weekend, temperatures into the mid-and upper 70s for a long stretch of time. around the bay the warm-up isn't quite that stark, but it's still going to be very nice for st. patrick's day weekend with highs right around, even a little above 70 degrees. along the coast you will be well into the 60s. that's above normal for mid-march, plenty of sunshine for everybody as we head through the weekend, not even a hint of a shower chance which for weekends in 2024 has been the exception. maybe we'll get into a different pattern now. >> thank you. time for a check of what's ahead at 6:00, we switch over to juliette. >> thanks so much. at 6:00, a mother tirelessly fought for justice for her daughter killed

business owners in oakland are teaming up for women's history month. the month long campaign helps support women-owned businesses and celebrate the community. shawn chitnis has more. >> reporter: step into allison's store and you'll quickly realize she was always mountain to run a business like this. >> i just really love the joy that plants bring to people. >> reporter: more than a decade she's owned crimson horticultural rarities in oakland, taking a hobby she had and turning it into a full-time job, a career change she didn't expect to make in her 40s. >> i really had no idea i could

pull off this. >> reporter: so she understands the importance of getting good support and when she learned that a group of women were getting together along piedmont avenue where her store has been for a few years now, she said it was a no brainer. >> i knew there were a lot of women-owned businesses here on piedmont, but i guess i didn't really realize quite how many there were and so i just love that. i think it's great. >> reporter: all month each will offer discounts to bring more people to their shopping district and promoting each other as a collection of stores. >> they want to show people this is what small businesses, what women do, how women show up every day. >> reporter: mika helped come up with the idea of a passport, encouraging customers to walk from one store to another while shopping along the avenue. she owns the restaurant palmella also located on piedmont. each business is not only giving out daily deals, they're contributing raffle prizes for customers to win.
