headlines. because it's cool and those clouds are a lot lower for our friends near san francisco right now and could impact the visibility at the surface level. we have more rain in the forecast this morning a huge dry break right around the corner that starts tomorrow and a little bit gustier as tthetemperatures start to warm up this week. our pollen count increases around the corner as it dries up. a lot of pros and cons but let's dive into what's going on this morning. it is snowing up in the sierra. it is raining back here in the bay. all the part of the same cold front sweeping throughout the whole state as we wake up and head out the door. and areas like fairfield all the way over into vallejo we're seeing light rain right now and drier conditions through the rest of the north bay. mill valley light drizzle too. that's the case in the east bay as we wake up and on and off showers in the forecast for us heading into the next couple of hours and it's a lot more blanketed as we weak up and head out the door just along 101. from san mateo stretching up into burlingame and south san francisco wet conditions out there on the roads and it's currently dry and most of santa clara valley.
6:04 am
but this system right here, with that light rain is moving to the south. so we'll watch that on futurecast kind of break apart and diminish heading into the next couple of hours. then we're kind of just left with a blanket of clouds and a light chance of showers into the early afternoon hours. but nothing to write home about. that's going to be light drizzle that passes through and you probably honestly don't even need the umbrella because once we head into the next couple of days that thing is going to be a thing of the past. drier conditions later tonight and i'm going to have more on what you can expect for now over to you, g. let's talk about the freeways and bridges right now because they are sleek this morning. live look here at the richmond-san rafael bridge. already seeing a bit of a slow drive near the toll plaza. just be careful as you head out and about. you can see at the bay bridge, metering lights are on and that's already backed up this morning. and it is our slowest approach to the bay bridge right now. if you are taking westbound 80 hercules into richmond, no crashes but already slow. slow across the upper deck heading into the city and starting to see the east bay routes bog down a

the palestinian population. it may take up to two days for the ship to complete its journey. palestinians in gaza marked the first day of ramadan with prayers in many cases, outside mosques damaged by israeli air strikes. the u.s. pushed for a ceasefire during this holy month and instead israel could expand its offensive to the southern city of rafah. jewish students at uc berkeley are making their voices heard. they held a demonstration on campus calling for the school to protect them. yesterday's march was held in response to an incident last month. organizers say jewish students were holding another on campus event when pro palestinian protesters broke down and shattered the glass door to a venue where an israeli speaker was to give a talk. the university says it is aware of and concerned about rising tensions on campus. and they're seeking to reduce those tensions through dialogue. meantime, counterprotesters put up this banner in front of the gate

accusing israel and the u.s. of starving 2.2 million people in gaza. well, good morning to our neighbors in oakland. we see and hear the local business owners say crime has made keeping business as usual near impossible there and you know the past few months has seen a starbucks and denny's shut down. the in-n-out closed its doors and the first time the chain has ever done that by the way. raising cane's had to close down their dining room. all of the businesses say crime is the reason for the decisions and the same goes for taco bell on 35th avenue. it's been robbed four times since november and as a result, their dining room is now closed as well. the ownersdiversified restaurant group closed all their dining rooms in oakland. we have not heard back from them. most see it as a sad reminder of how bad things have gotten in their town. >> it breaks my heart. >> why? >> because -- i want -- i want somebody to protect the citizens. >> everything is just getting
6:09 am
worse. things are closing down. you know, it's just terrible. >> we're told the drive-thru will be open and there are plans right now no -- no plans to close any of those restaurants altogether. time right now 6:08 in the morning. as a pioneer in the tech industry and silicon valley. we'll introduce you to the man breaking barriers and holding the doors open for other. plus they are staying rooted in oakland. some a's fans celebrating the team's rich history in the bay in the middle of a difficult time. let's head 27 miles south of san francisco right now. to redwood city. you see the name all lit up there. and everyone is probably getting up and at them as we get into that 6:00 hour. we'll be right

taking a live lack at san jose. you know history tends to remember the big names. there are countless other coders and engineers who are deserving of a page in the valley's history and one of the names is roy clay senior. remember that name. he led the team that created the software for hp's first personal computer. he still is with us but has suffered a number of health
6:13 am
setbacks recently that have robbed the once brilliant mind of the ability to communicate but thankfully three devoted sons who have worked to preserve his memories and cement his legacy. here's devin fehely with this story. >> his mindset was don't let anything stop you from accomplishing your goals. >> reporter: christopher clay is the third and youngest of roy's three sons. and with his father's health failing few years ago, he spearheaded the efforts to preserve his father's memories, document his legacy, as one of the few african americans to be present at the dawn of silicon valley. >> the creation of this computer division, both the hardware side of it and the software side of it that he ran, was truly transformational for hp at that time. >> reporter: clay's sons say what their father managed to accomplish at hewlett-packard at a time when society rarely recognized the beauty of blackness or the brilliance of black minds makes his story that much more remarkable.
6:14 am
something to be shared. something to inspire others by example. >> my father's mother always told him from the very beginning, you will encounter racism your entire life. however, do not let that be a reason why you do not succeed. >> reporter: roy clay senior was born in 1929 in the tiny town of kinloch, missouri. he was bright and ambitious and at a time when college was more rarity than the rule, he earned a degree in mathematics from st. louis university. jobs at mcdonnell's aircraft corporation and lawrence livermore labs followed before eventually landing at hp. >> that's why a lot of people called him the godfather of silicon valley. >> reporter: marvin jackson is clay's biographer and helped write his memoir "unstoppable," which chronicles his role leading the team in 1966 that developed the software for hp's first computer, the hp 21166a. >> this is the thing. there weren't many people doing this
6:15 am
back then. so -- there weren't many white guys doing it either. >> reporter: roy's sons say it wasn't enough for their father simply to be in the proverbial room where it happens. he also wanted to make sure that the doors were left open for other people who look like him. >> the pathways that he opened, he wanted to make sure they were left open, you know, for others to follow and that's one of the, you know, driving reasons why we created the book. >> reporter: clay would eventually leave hp, found his own company and bring his sons into the fold but they say their father was equally if not more proud of the family that he and his wife virginia built at the workday's end. >> the biggest priority for him was always family. turned down some really good professional opportunities and some job offers and heturned them down because he wanted to make sure that he had time to spend
6:16 am
raising all of us. >> reporter: ray clay senior knew that nothing would come easy in this life. if he wanted a brighter future, he would have to grab it. if he wanted the wider world to recognize his brilliance, it would have to be dazzling and damn near undeniable. and if he wanted his story to be told alongside the other greats of silicon valley, he'd likely need to write it himself. >> well, roy's sons are working to adapt his memoir into a second book for school aged children. let's take a live look outside on this tuesday morning. and it's chilly outside and there's a little bit of moisture in the air as i like to call it and jess has a full report on what the moisture in the air actually means for us today. jessica? >> well, whether we're talking about fog, the low clouds, or the rain, we really have it all this morning. so let's dive into our first alert doppler and heading out the door, yeah, it's a little bit wet out there and it's cloudy too. i actually have that turned on on the virtual reality map so you can see just what it's looking like in your local communities. it is a lot more dry for the friends up in the north bay. not the case a couple of hours ago though. this storm is tracking to the south and as we wake up and head out the door
6:17 am
you might be splashed with just some light showers in the forecast and your cars might be wet. there might be a little bit slick conditions out there on the roads at times but for the most part, this is light rain really it's just an inconvenience. this is not a washout event and we're seeing light rain currently over the golden gate bridge. the bay bridge too. stretching down into the santa clara valley. on and off showers are in the forecast for us throughout the next couple of hours as we're dealing with the last day of unsettled weather. by later tonight, we're actually just going to see a blanket of clouds that clears up fast heading into the forecast tomorrow. as high pressure starts to move its way in. now as that new system moves its way in we're going to dry up and we're going to warm up and the winds they're going to get a lot gustier throughout the next couple of days as it moves its way in too. this morning heading into the afternoon at max about 20, 30-mile-per-hour winds along the coastline and 20-mile-per-hour winds in the ininland areas but watch what happens. the area of high pressure right here kind of ridge this is huge little heat dome over us. as it does that gusts over 30, 40 miles per hour in the thursday
6:18 am
forecastment lot of changes if the forecast for thus week. it's going to feel a lot warmer and it's going to feel a lot more spring-like as we head into those weekend and earl flex week. we're talking about upper 70s for our daytime highs but today, we're still in the low 60s and upper 50s throughout the bay area. for example, half-moon bay at 58 degrees and 62 fremont and the next seven days while we're going to ditch the 60s, we're going to see more 70s in our inland forecast and hold on tight to all that sunshine. now this does us a lot of good when it comes to the fact we're tarting to see the rainy season kind of taper off and come to an end. but pollen count increases this weekend too. if you have allergies just take it slow. while we're still dealing with unsettled weather today but gosh it's going to be gorge us the weekend and early next week. jess, thank you. taking a look at the roadways it's pretty slick out there and it's kind of the traffic headline for the day as you get up and out the door. need the umbrella and probably some
6:19 am
extra time as things might be busier than usual. cars taking it slower as well because of the slick fasts and you can really see thats a the richmond-san rafael bridge. as you work your way over towards the marin side. coming from the southeast bay on that westbound commute which is the commute direction. look at this. it is already busy at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see those rain drops still stuck on the camera lens. and traffic backed up to the foot of the maze already this morning. and we're seeing those crowded conditions coming off the eastshore freeway as well as across the upper deck as you head into the city. and in fact, this is one of the slowest spots right now. that westbound 80 commute all the way out of hercules richmond down into berkeley all the way into emeryville. commuting through the area, definitely get on the roadways sooner than later to give yourself that little extra time so you are not stressed out and taking it easy on the roadways. travel times also starting to get a little hefty for that ride as you work your way out of the tracy area into the altamont pass. nicole? the time now 6:19. the a's' fan base is living through a nightmare in reality. but they're still hoping in oakland and some fans are using

opening day is just a few weeks away and you can say that a's are the most controversial team in baseball right now. playing at the coliseum for one more year and after that their future remains uncertain. well, these are the newly released renderings for their proposed ballpark in vegas. which includes a view of the sin city skyline. the athletics plan to move from oakland to las vegas was approved by major league baseball last year. but this new park isn't expected to be ready for the a's until 2028. meanwhile, i caught up with one longtime fan who loves the a's so much, that he started a business around them. since the days of the bash bros, bryan johansen has loved the a's. so when a 2020 "new york times" article bashed the oakland
6:24 am
coliseum, bryan took the negative things they had to say and turned them into a positive. >> they compared the coliseum to a dive bar when all the other stadiums were like cocktail lounges. i saw a line in there that says baseball's last dive bar and we decided to make a banner of it. little did we know it was going to go viral. >> reporter: not only did it go viral, but it became profitable with banners and pins and calendars all inspired by the coliseum. a new business was born. the last dive bar. they even organized fan experiences like last month's fans' fest. >> it was magical, you know. there was 15 -- 15,000 to 20,000 that were there. you had past players and you had all the oakland teams that were there. over 60 vendors and community members. >> reporter: some said it was the best fan fest they've ever been to. and sadly, it could be their last. after 2024, the a's don't have a place to call home. will these fans travel to sacramento, vegas, salt lake city, or even support
6:25 am
the team at the coliseum for the next four years? knowing a new vegas ballpark will be ready, 2028. for loyal fans, this process is heart-breaking. >> it's horrible. it's like living every day in a nightmare where it's like -- you know, the person you love most doesn't love you back, but you are forced to live with them. >> reporter: despite the pain, bryan's message, keep hope. he thinks a lot can still fail in vegas and he wants fans to continue to highlight the deficiencies of the ownership group in hopes that it will keep the a's rooted in oakland at the coliseum where they belong. the last dive bar's next event is an opening day boycott. they plan to gather in the parking lot at the coliseum but they will not go into the game. the point is to hit john fisher where it hurts and that's his ability to generate revenue. >> that's what matter right? money in his pocket and maybe this will show them there are
6:26 am
so many fans here who care about the a's. >> you cannot buy that. you you cannot create that, and you cannot brand that or move that when you have a heartbeat in a community. that's priceless. >> of the temporary homes i threw out there. where do you think they'd be most successful? i don't see salt lake city being a fit for the a's. do you? i mean, you have experience. >> i mean, i don't know a lot about that ballpark. i have been to that ballpark. and salt lake city -- look, it has business leaders not unlike the business leaders in las vegas who are like --incentivizing how do we get people there and their economies are booming. it comes down to leadership. >> i like the sacramento ballpark a lot. i don't know if bay area fans are going to make the trek. >> get them as soon as possible into las vegas? to sort of build that fan base if that is a possibility. for them. before the ballpark. >> one would think. >> yeah. you would think. decisions, decisions. >> if only we were in the drivers' seat right? but we see we celebrate you another

oakland. why today's vote could be so crucial. plus say hello to the bench guys. meet the best in our community making sure people have a place to sit. here's a live look outside before we head to break on this tuesday. i wish we had a better view of the city. it looks like we're underwater. it's a little bit wet out there.

right now on cbs news bay area at 6:29 in the morning. today is the last day to mail in the ballot to make it to election officials. it has to be postmarked by march 5th and by the way still watching the tight races taking place. could be the deciders for the results of the primaries. san jose now. we have numbers for the closely watched district 16 congressional race. the battle for second place still too close to call. we know former san jose mayor sam liccardo will be headed to the general election and about 700 votes separates the candidates vying for second place there. county supervisor joe simitian leading against committee member evan low. we're watching that one closely. also a proposition 1. still has a small lead. right now prop 1 has around 40,000 more
6:31 am
yes votes than no votes. that's out of more than 5 million ballots counted. the $6.3 billion bond measure would overhaul the state's mental health and drug treatment systems. and meanwhile, four states are holding their primaries today and it could be a big day for both president joe biden and former president donald trump. depending on the final tally, both candidates could win enough votes to be their party's presumptive nominee. jarred hill is live in new york as the two frontrunners continue to spar on the campaign trail. good morning jarred. lots of talking appointments out there as they go head-to-head on the issues, immigration definitely one of them. >> reporter: definitely. reed and we are seeing the two going head-to-head because the contests today are largely a formality right? with the party nominees essentially locked in. except for the official delegate count. with no major challengers left in either race, both of the candidates are in full general election mode. today, voters in georgia, hawaii, mississippi, and washington state head to the primary polls. >> personally, i just want a republican in the white house.
6:32 am
>> i just hope the democrats will come out and vote. >> reporter: yesterday, president biden stopped by a campaign field office in new hampshire where he continued to draw the line between himself and his likely 2024 gop rival, former president donald trump. >> while i was down in georgia working on health care, he was with viktor orban who talked about democracy being a problem. >> reporter: trump talked about it in an interview on cnbc. >> i get along with him very well and we're friendly and i have respect for him. >> reporter: in the same interview, the former president suggested he was open to cutting so-called entitlements, like social security and medicare, to save money. >> there's a lot you can do in terms of entitlements and in terms of cutting and in terms of also the theft and the bad management of entitlements. >> reporter: president biden has released his fiscal year 2025 budget proposal which includes plans to shore up those benefits. >> i will protect and strengthen social security and medicare and make the wealthy begin to pay their fair share.
6:33 am
>> reporter: but his budget likely won't pass the divided congress. amid reports of the massive layoffs at the republican national committee after trump allies were put in power. the democratic national committee said in a statement they released it's quote, not a good sign. something to watch for today is the going to be the strength of the democratic protest vote against president biden by critics of his handling of the israel-hamas war saying just how far that might spread. as well as what kind of support former president trump can get in some of these contests as well. back to you. >> jarred hill reporting live from new york city, thank you jarred. now taking a live look outside on this tuesday morning. and this is the time of year where i throw a survival pack in my trunk. it has -- >> with a gas mask. >> many things. layers here in the bay area. because you don't know when all of a sudden the bay area is going to heat up to 70 degrees and you need a tank top in there and you need some galoshes. you need an umbrella and am i right
6:34 am
jessica. >> a survivor tumbler full of unknown substances. >> to get you through the day. >> oh my gosh. yeah, you have to have everything in the trunk right? well, let's take a quick look at what's going on outside. i have a miata. the trunk is only about this big which means i'm limited to maybe a jacket and umbrella. which by the way you should probably have both this morning. if you are heading out the door and you live anywhere in the bay we're still seeing some light drizzle in the forecast for us and i'll show you that in just a minute. but let's start off with the weather headlines. besides the rain we're going to start seeing a big warm-up in the forecast. starting tomorrow with drier conditions throughout the rest of this week. we're going to also see some gustier conditions heading into our thursday forecast. and friday. that's going to also allow for that pollen count to really spike with the dry conditions it's going to be gusty and whipple up a the pollenment but this is what we're waking up to this morning. snow in the sierra and back here in the bay we're dealing with that light rain starting to taper off up in the north bay actually. still keep the jacket and you can probably ditch the umbrella. it's not bad to have it on hand though because the showers are off and on in the next couple of hours
6:35 am
and continue to move in if the north. right now just near sfo light rain there and across the golden gate bridge a similar trend and starting to dry up in the santa clara valley and we'll continue to watch this slowly taper off throughout the next couple of hours. it's still an unsettled weather day because once the rain begins to end, we're still left with a blanket of clouds and cool gusty conditions moving in from offshore at times. around 15 to 20-mile-per-hour winds are expected along our coast. but here's the good news, like i mentioned we're going start drying upstarting this afternoon. lasting throughout the rest of this week into early next week and this is important because there's a lot of things happening this weekend. we're expecting 70s around the corner and i'll have more on that coming up. all right, let's take a look at the roadways right now. here's a live look at our richmond-san rafael bridge cam. and you can see it's raining there and it is slick this morning. so be extra cautious as you hit the freeways and i want to show you the bay bridge right now. you can see that's getting a good amount of o rain right now too. so we've got some slick surfaces for anyone heading over into san francisco. and certainly as we get closer to the 7:00 hour is
6:36 am
our busiest hour. we are seeing the brake lights building out of the east bay. hercules, richmond into oakland. south 880 out of hayward all the way into fremont. definitely slowing down. and just be careful with all the wet roadways. it's time now for the look at the morning's top stories. at&t's recently announced plan to cut landline services in california is getting some pushback. a handful of local government agencies including santa clara and napa supervisors and berkeley city council will be discussing the issue in their meetings today. they argue that because of yearly natural disasters and the damage it brings, it's important to have this type of communication open since it's reliable. in dublin, a woman's prison with a documented history of sexual abuse was raided by the feds. more than a dozen agents seized computers and documents from fci dublin. a source told the associated press the warden was taken away along with an associate warden
6:37 am
and a captain. deputy assistant director nancy mckinney will replace the ousted warden. right now the fbi will only say they quote conducted court authorized law enforcement activity. the prison was investigated in 2021 after at least eight employees were charged with sexually abusing inmates. the former warden was sentenced early this year to nearly six years in prison. congress has conducted several investigations and the federal bureau of prisons has promised to fix the problem. state lawmakers in sacramento want to increase safety on school campuses. a new proposal would require public and charter schools to have an armed officer on campus whenever students are present. the new bill would make it a mandate. if it becomes a law, the state would reimburse school districts for the cost. commercial airlines have been making headlines recently for some very scary moments in the sky. and making matters worse, two more mishaps. 50 people were hurt on a flight
6:38 am
from australia to new zealand. this happened on monday. after passengers said it suddenly dropped. la tap airlines called it a technical event but passengers said the pilot told them the gauges malfunctioned causing him to briefly lose control. one passenger was napping when he said he was jolted awake to the plane's nose pointed down like a roller coaster drop. >> i opened my eyes and there was various individuals at the top of the plane. just stuck to the roof. and then they fell to the floor. and i just realized i'm not in a movie. this is actually for real. and not dreaming. this is for real. >> that's scary. that plane was a boeing 787 from chile. new zealand authorities are looking into what happened. also on monday another flight out of australia it was bound for san francisco had to make a sudden return to sydney. united says the plan had to turn around because of some sort of maintenance issue. no other

details were released. well, this morning, we are celebrating local heroes building bridges with benches. more than 100,000 people take ac transit buses across the three bay area counties the agency serves but not all of them have a place to sit while they wait. enter the bench guys. they've been doing a little rogue carpentry. our itay hod followed the guys along on their most recent dropoff in berkeley. >> reporter: when darrell owens and mingwei samuel noticed there were no benches at many bus stops across the east bay, instead of sitting on their hands, they decided to take a stand. >> it's easy to feel sort of like helpless in the world, with all the stuff that's going on. and this is just a way to make the world a better place. >> reporter: over the last three months, they've become known simply as the bench guys,
6:40 am
pulling up to bus stops and installing their own handcrafted creations. >> we weren't looking for any fame or glory or anything like that. our goal is just to give people a place to sit. >> reporter: it all started when their neighbor, who had just gotten out of surgery, was forced to sit on the curb because there was no bench at the bus stop. that's when darrell and mingwei took matters into their own hands. learning how to build a bench on youtube, and even making sure they're compliant with the city's disability regulations. as they drive around the east bay, they make a mental note of benchless bus stops. today, it's the intersection of sacramento and virginia streets right by the north berkeley b.a.r.t. station. >> while we fundamentally love our bus bench project, it's a great project, the goal is to get the cities to actually care about their transit riders and

put these benches out. >> reporter: and while it may seem like an exercise in futility, they're already getting a sitting ovation from both city and transit officials. in fact, their project has already pushed berkeley to swap one of their benches for an official city bench. have they essentially lit a fire under ac transit, would you say that? >> i would say a fire has been lit. >> reporter: jean walsh is an ac transit board member and she says this quirky campaign is forcing officials to find a solution to this deep-seated issue. >> so many of our problems are hard to solve and they're complex and they're costly and they're really difficult. putting benches at bus stops isn't one of them. i'm really grateful for this action because it has sparked a conversation. >> reporter: at the end of the day, darrell and mingwei head home. but not before taking a load off. >> i love just like sitting on it and just take a little break and then -- you know, go about your day after. >> reporter: putting officials in the hot seat, while paving the way for more benches across the bay.

hours with clouds filling the bay area throughout the rest of our tuesday forecast. heading into our wednesday setup we're going to dry up fast right around the corner for wednesday and thursday. and lasting into this weekend, we don't have a chance of rain in sight. as high pressure moves its way in from offshore. that's going to give us sunny skies and 70s in the forecast for us all for the rest of the week starting tomorrow lasting into this weekend. if you are thinking of heading over to travis air force base, to go watch the blue angels we're expecting sunshine and 70s. they are in for a treat. perfect vfr weather here once we head into the weekend in forecast tomorrow we have to get through today first. and speaking of today, we're dealing with some gusty conditions along the coast and wind speeds anywhere up to around 15, 20, 25 miles per hour. lighter conditions in our inland east bay and we're expecting 60s for the daytime highs throughout the east bay and 60s near redwood city and warmer for the friend down into the santa clara valley. but take a look at san jose. 64 degrees if you think that's mild, well, we are in for a big change in the forecast for us starting tomorrow. high pressure moves its way in.
6:50 am
we're going to see the pollen count increase and a little bit gustier conditions throughout the next couple of days and but we're also going to see sunshine and 70s right around the corner. for at least our inland forecast. that starts on freud and that's going to last as we head into early next workweek too. but take a look at this. our bay forecast a little bit cooler. we're going to hit those upper 60s flirting with a lower 70s heading into this weekend. a little bit cloudier conditions just along the coastline so closer to ocean beach, you know, just along the peninsula but early next week, we'll be seeing the 70s last for us too. anywhere throughout the peninsula all the way up into the north bay too. keep you updated on the forecast, for now over to you, g. >> excited about the 70s jess. you can't get too excited about the freeways this morning, they are slick. but give yourself extra time, maybe it won't be so bad as you head out there. no word of a ton of crashes at least nothing major that's blocking a lot of lanes or causing big backups. it really is what you are seeing is the usual stuff. the first camera there was the richmond-san rafael bridge and now the bay bridge and really

that headline for the roadways is those wet conditions. it is kind of a little sloppy in some spots with those metering lights on. and yeah, a lot of the eastbound routes or east bay commutes starting to get busy this morning taking south 680, into the sunol grade. southbound 880 through hayward and of course that westbound 80 commute as you head towards the bay bridge. okay, so let's get back to travel tuesday. as we mentioned, we are less than a month away from a total solar eclipse. that will be visible to millions. it happens on april 8th and where the moon will once again blot out the sun. it passes over mexico, the u.s. and canada. let's go back to melanie fish with expedia travel who joins us this morning. with some advice on where to go and where to make the most of it. and melanie, i know this is a big deal. and where are people traveling to as far as what states you can see it from? >> well, when we are thinking about where the most popular places are to go for the eclipse, i'm looking at a couple of things. the highest flight searches have been to
6:52 am
little rock, arkansas, and burlington, vermont. with flight searches up over 1,000%. but if you are looking for a destination that has the most locations in the path of totality, it's got to be texas. i'm on the edge of the texas hill country. and it's where the path of totality is going to be the longest. the longest period of darkness in the u.s. and the good news is, there are still plenty of places available to stay. >> okay, so tell me a little bit about like how to find the special trips in those areas. are you still seeing those at relatively reasonable prices? that's less than a month away and a time when a lot of kids might be on spring break. >> that's exactly right. spring break overlapping this historical event. that's a lot of people on the roads and in the sky. but i'm still seeing hotels available. a lot in these bigger cities where you will be able to see the eclipse. like dallas, there are
6:53 am
places under $150 a night. so you can find things that are affordable, but you are going to be paying those prime prices for places like this. we found this house in the hill country on vrbo and we're staying here for under $1,000. you look at eclipse weekend, that price has tripled. it's sleeping 16 people. so bring your friends. you know, you are still in good shape. so i would say my biggest piece of advice if you haven't made any plans is to use this nifty tool in the expedia app. called the solar eclipse tool. so when you are looking for a destination, you can gosports in hey, i'm coming from san francisco. i want to go see solar eclipse 2024. and it will pull up all the places you can stay in the path of totality. and as a matter of fact, i checked it this morning. so you just put solar eclipse 2024, and it's coming up with package deals
6:54 am
where you can fly and get your hotel and when you bundle them together, you get a discount. and you can sort it according to look i just want to see the eclipse and i want to get there as cheaply as possible or i'm going to combine it with a luxury stay. still plenty of options with a lot of populated areas in the path of totality. >> melanie. thank you. it might cost money but you know the opportunity is priceless. we appreciate you joining us and i'm glad the zoom worked out and total solar eclipse again is happening on april 8th. ever want to get behind the wh
