i'm shanelle kaul in new york. jury deliberations have begun in the trial of james crumbley, the father of michigan high school shooter ethan crumbley. he and his wife jennifer crumbley were both charged with involuntary manslaughter. she was found guilty last month. officials say 16 people were injured during an explosion at an fbi training facility in california yesterday. it happened during a joint training exercise between the orange county sheriff's office and s.w.a.t. teams. and the concord taking a slower trip through new york city. the supersonic jet was returned to the intrepid museum on a barge yesterday following a restoration project in brooklyn. for more, download the cbs news app on your cell phone or connected tv. i'm shanelle kaul, cbs news, new york.

else. tiktok says the bill threatens the constitutional rights of its more than 170 million users in the u.s., and it could put american jobs at risk. cbs' jarred hill joins us now from new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: hey, tiktok tried a number of ways to sway that vote in the house, but it didn't work. only about 60 or so members said no this bill that, as you mentioned, could effectively ban the app if it doesn't divest from china. now the focus is what the senate will do with this legislation. >> the bill is passed -- >> reporter: after an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote in the house, the clock is ticking over the fate of tiktok. >> this is a common sense measure to protect our national security. >> reporter: the fast-moving bill would require the popular video-sharing app to cut ties with its beijing-based parent company bytedance within six months or face being banned from app stores in the u.s. lawmakers have been sounding alarms over the possibility that the chinese government could use tiktok to spy on americans or

spread misinformation. >> beijing, china, should not have the control over americans that tiktok gives them. >> reporter: though some pushback from both parties. >> it's opening pandora's box. >> we have yet to receive one piece of public evidence that actually shows that somehow china is actually negatively using our data. >> reporter: tiktok's ceo responded on the app arguing the legislation violates the first amendment. >> we will continue to do all we can including exercising our legal rights to protect this amazing platform. >> reporter: in an 11th hour attempt to sway the vote, the company paid for some of its most influential users to descend on washington this week, including gohar khan who posts strategy videos about college applications. >> most of my income comes from tiktok. tiktok is a place for various communities to thrive, for people to connect. >> reporter: the white house has urged the senate to move swiftly on the bill, and president biden says he'll sign it if it reaches his desk. so the senate majority leader

said that he'll review this house bill but hasn't even guaranteed to hold a version -- a vote on this version of the legislation. some senators have predicted that it could take months to get something through the chamber, and even if it's signed into law there is the likelihood that there would be challenges in the courts to all of this. so the time i still ticking on tiktok. >> it is. it is. jarred hill in new york. thank you. donald trump is expected back in a florida courtroom today as he tries to get the federal classified documents case tossed out. his lawyers say the former president was entitled under the presidential records act to keep the sensitive documents when he left the white house. that hearing comes one day after an unexpected ruling in georgia's election interference case. a fulton county judge threw out six of the charges against trump and five other defendants. cbs' nikole killion reports. >> reporter: fulton county judge scott mcafee threw out charges that accused former president trump and several of his

co-defendants of pressuring public officers to violate their oaths as part of an alleged effort to overturn the 2020 election. mcafee said district attorney fani willis and her prosecutors were not specific enough about the violations writing, "the lack of detail concerning an essential legal element is fatal." just three of trump's 13 counts were tossed including one for his january, 2021, phone call to georgia secretary of state brad raffensperger. >> i just want to find 11,780 votes. >> reporter: trump's legal team applauded the ruling. >> it was a step in right direction. it goes to the sloppiness of, frankly, the prosecutors down there. >> reporter: former federal prosecutor tom dupree said it was only a partial victory for trump. >> the judge's decision has the result of narrowing the case against trump and the other defendants. it doesn't eliminate it entirely, though. >> it is a lie.

>> reporter: mcafee's ruling comes ahead of a highly anticipated decision this week about whether willis and special prosecutor nathan wade should be disqualified from the election interference case. last month the pair admitted to having a romantic relationship for about a year after wade was hired but denied any wrongdoing. >> the romantic relationship ended before the indictment was returned. yes or no? >> to a man, yes. >> reporter: this following racketeering case against the former president and his associates remains largely intact. but if willis is disqualified, another attorney could be assigned to the case which could further impact the proceedings. nikole killion, cbs news, atlanta, georgia. we're watching severe storms hammering the nation's midsection. a major snowstorm is pounding the denver area facing major -- forcing major highways to shut down and canceling nearly 40% of the flights into and out of denver's

the city is expecting about one foot of snow. now the mountains could see up to four feet on the ground. farther east, check out this large tornado about 100 miles west of kansas city last night. and today, severe weather is expected from indiana to texas. 26 million people are under a threat of large hail and tornadoes as a cold front pushes across the middle of the country. a landslide destroyed a home that was under renovation and damaged three other homes in los angeles. it happened yesterday in the suburbs of sherman oaks. several people were evacuated from two of the damaged homes. the landslide pulled a pool and deck away from one of the houses. recent storms in southern california have left the ground saturated and caused hundreds of mudslides. the head of the ntsb says she's having trouble getting answers from boeing as it investigates why the door panel blew off one of its jets in january. jennifer homendy says the company told her it has no records of who worked on the

panel that blew off mid flight. she also said boeing told investigators that video from cameras inside the factory were erased after 30 days, according to standard company practice. a team of u.s. marines has been sent to haiti to help protect the u.s. embassy in port-au-prince amid escalating deadly gang violence. it comes as a group of americans, including bestselling author mitch albom, was airlifted out of haiti in a private rescue mission spearheaded by two u.s. representatives. albom says that he was visiting the have faith haiti orphanage with his wife and eight others when they became trapped for ten days. >> everybody inside started clapping, but my wife and i -- it was a gut punch because, you know, all of our kids are still at the orphanage. >> meanwhile, a proposal to install new leadership in haiti appears to be in jeopardy after the prime minister said he would step down. some political parties rejected the plan to create a presidential council to manage

the transition and selection -- and select an interim government. and now to gaza where israel says it's planning to move a significant number of the 1.4 million palestinians sheltering in rafah ahead of its planned offensive in the southern city. the idf says it along with the international community will create humanitarian islands in other parts of the strip that would provide temporary housing, food, water, and other necessities. the israeli military also confirms striking a u.n. aid warehouse in rafah in what it's calling a targeted attack that killed a hamas commander. unwra, the embattled agency that supports palestinians, said one worker was killed and more than 20 others hurt. and the u.s. and other continues continue airdropping food into northern gaza. the idf ambulance to flood the area with aid by opening multiple points of entry. coming up, fbi training mishap. the explosion that sent more than a dozen people to the hospital.

"detroit free press" reports on the start of jury deliberations in the involuntary manslaughter trial of the father of a michigan scooter. -- school shooter. jason crumbley is accused of failing to secure a gun used by his then-16-year-old son in the 2021 shooting and ignoring his son's mental health issues. four students were killed. crumbley's wife was convicted on the same involuntary manslaughter charges last month. "the kansas city star" says three missouri men face firearms charges in connection with last month's chiefs super bowl parade
