>> guilty of involuntary manslaughter. >> a jury convicts the father who bought his teenage son a gun who then used it to shoot up a high school. both he and his wife are the first parents to be held responsible for a mass shooting committed by their child. but first -- >> oh, no. >> breaking overnight, dangerous storms rip across the midwest karveg a -- carving a path of destruction. this morning families will assess the damage. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. thunderstorms, damaging hail, and tornadoes tore through several states overnight destroying homes and businesses and knocking out power. the twisters touched down in ohio and kentucky as well as indiana where we are learning there are significant injuries and at least two fatalities. when daylight breaks, communities will have a tough task of seeing what remains.

so just take a look at this map now. it's showing the outbreak and the large number of storm damage reports. cbs' dave malkoff is going to start us off. tornado on the ground. >> reporter: the severe weather threat keeps growing in the midwest with multiple tornadoes touching down in indiana. in hanover a tornado ripped through homes causing roofs to collapse, knocking down trees and power lines. >> destruction inside. everything. >> reporter: in madison, another tornado crossed the ohio river. video shows debris spinning in the air. in milton, kentucky, at least 100 structures were damaged after a tornado touched down. >> it's on the ground. it's on the ground. it's on the grown. -- on the ground. >> reporter: a super cell thunderstorm spun up a tornado as severe weather moved through alta vista, kansas. hail battered parts of northern kansas, some bigger than golf balls. in colorado, record-breaking snowfall is the problem. some parts of the state have got 20, 30 inches of snow.

now try digging out of all this. especially if you rarely see snow like this. hazardous winter conditions created a nightmare in colorado springs leaving some drivers trapped. people stuck on highways like i-70 causing a standstill leading to major closures west of denver. >> i came here to ski. >> flight got canceled. rented a car, tried to get to steamboat. we were lucky to get a place to stay. >> reporter: the snow causing more than 800 flight cancelations at denver international airport. >> i was crying all day yesterday because i wanted to be home. and i can't. >> reporter: dave malkoff, cbs news. the father of a michigan school shooter is facing up to 15 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter. james crumbley's son killed four students at oxford high school back in 2021. now he and his wife are the first parents to be criminally charged and convicted after

their child committed a school shooting. cbs' jarred hill is joining us with reaction to this verdict. good morning. >> reporter: hey, anne-marie. during a press conference after the verdict was read, families of the victims noted this is a step toward accountability, but nothing will bring those four young lives back. now they're hoping to spark broader change. >> guilty of involuntary manslaughter -- >> reporter: after two days of deliberations, a michigan jury unanimously convicted james crumbley on four counts of involuntary manslaughter. the verdict a little more than two years after his son shot and killed four students at oxford high school. >> this verdict does not bring back their children, but it does mark a moment of accountability. >> reporter: hana st. julianna, tate myre, madisyn baldwin, and justin shilling died that day. >> our children are dying on a

daily basis in mass murders and we do little about it. >> reporter: during the nearly week-long trial prosecutors argued that james crumbley failed to properly store the gun his son used in the attack. the weapon purchased just four days before the tragedy. prosecutors also say james didn't do enough to help his son's mental health issues. on the day of the shooting james and his wife, jennifer crumbley, were called to the school and asked to take their son home but they refused. >> these parents could have prevented this tragedy. >> reporter: jennifer crumbley was found guilty of the same charges last month. their son ethan is already serving a life sentence. now james and jennifer are scheduled to be sentenced on the same day next month. so the father's defense attorney maintains that he didn't know that his son would hurt anyone. meanwhile, legal analysts say these cases could set a precedent for who is held criminally responsible in any future school shootings. >> yeah. jarred hill in new york. thank you. there are new developments

in three of the criminal cases involving former president donald trump. a judge is expected to rule today on whether the prosecutor overseeing trump's georgia election interference trial should be disqualified from the case. trump's attorneys say fani willis' romantic relationship with a special prosecutor she hired for the case meant a conflict of interest. a federal judge in florida rejected trump's bid to throw out his classified documents case. the judge said trump's team raised arguments warranting serious consideration, but the charges should not be dismissed. and prosecutors in new york say they're open to delaying the start of trump's hush-money trial for up to 30 days to give lawyers time to review thousands of pages of documents that were recently turned over. trump's attorneys are seeking a 90-day delay or a ruling dismissing the charges. the trial is scheduled to begin in ten days. vice president kamala harris made a historic trip to a minnesota abortion clinic. her office said yesterday's visit to a planned parenthood

clinic in st. paul is the first time a president or vice president has visited a reproductive health facility. harris met with two dozen health care workers as the biden administration focuses on abortion rights across the country. >> how dare these elected leaders believe they are in a better position to tell women what they need, to tell women what is in their best interests? we have to be a nation that trusts women. >> the visit was the last stop in a six-state swing for harris on the issue of reproductive rights. now to a political storm that is setting off reaction from washington to tel aviv. senate majority leader chuck schumer slammed israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu on the senate floor and called for new elections in israel to replace him. as cbs' scott macfarlane reports, the highest ranking jewish elected official is now facing backlash for his historic speech.

>> reporter: nearly half a year into the war between israel and hamas, majority leader chuck schumer, one of congress' staunchest supporters of israel, uncorked a blistering criticism of the israeli leader. >> prime minister benjamin netanyahu has lost his way. >> reporter: in a 40-minute address he called for new elections and new israeli leadership. >> he has been too willing to tolerate the civilian toll in gaza which is pushing support for israel worldwide to historic lows. >> reporter: schumer's words come amid growing concerns among democrats and potential democratic voters about israel's aggressive military response to the october 7th attack by hamas and netanyahu's resistance to let more humanitarian aid into gaza. gaza is on the brink of famine. president biden has voiced his own frustration with netanyahu but has never called to replace him. white house officials who knew in advance what schumer would say have expressed deep concern about israel's plans to conduct

[ gunshots ] >> police say two men got into a fight yesterday as the train packed with rush hour passengers was pulling into a station in brooklyn. police say the man who was shot pulled out the gun. the other man grabbed it and shot the man he was arguing with several times. witnesses said the man who was shot was being aggressive toward the other man. "the startribune" says a woman was charged with illegally buying guns that were used in the murder of three minnesota first responders. federal prosecutors say ashley dyrdahl conspired with her boyfriend to get him guns including an ar-15-style rifle

even though she knew he was a convicted felon. authorities say gooden killed two officers and a paramedic during an hours' long standoff last month in the minneapolis suburb of burnsville. gooden took his own life. ashley dyrdahl pled not guilty to several charges including conspiracy. and "the boston globe" says six eighth grade students in massachusetts face criminal charges for allegedly taking part in what prosecutors call a hateful, racist online chat. authorities say the teenagers in the town of southwick participated in a snapchat conversation that included violent notions. prosecutors say it also included a mock slave auction for two fellow students. the students were suspended and charged with civil rights and other crimes. still to come, a possible new buyer for tiktok? and later, buzzing off. why a tennis match was forced to take a pause. if advanced lung cancer has you searching for possibilities,

steve mnuchin says he is putting together a group of investors to buy tiktok. this comes after the house passed a bill that would ban the social media app in the u.s. if it doesn't separate from its china-based owner. no details on what is part of mnuchin's group or how much tiktok is worth. ride share apps lyft and uber are threatening to leave minneapolis. it's in response to a recent move by the city council forcing them to pay drivers the equivalent of a local minimum wage of $15.57 an hour. lyft says it supports a minimum earnings standard for drivers but not this one, arguing the requirement would make rides less affordable for customers. the law is expected to take effect on may 1st. and starbucks is in hot water over what it charges for dairy-free options. a lawsuit now accuses the coffee giant of discriminating against people with lactose allergies by charging them an extra fee for
