from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. right now, a major traffic alert this st. patrick's day we can. if you are heading out, heads up. a section of south on 680 is set to shut down tonight. it will close from the 580 connector to koopman road in the pleasanton area. crews will replace pavement that is falling apart. that starts at 9:00 tonight. expect it to reopen on monday morning. a new tool to keep streets safe in san francisco. good afternoon. i'm ryan yamamoto. 33 new speed cameras will go up next year at some of the city's most high risk areas. sf mta announced they plan to install these new speed cameras. here is a map at some of the locations. they include areas in north beach, vanness and soma. officials say the karma will help curb speeding, traffic crashes, injuries and

deaths. drivers will get a ticket but it is unclear how much the pines will cost. the camera is part of a statewide safety pilot program. oakland and san jose will install speed cameras. a new crackdown at civic center's plaza. you might see a family or a group of skaters strolling through but a night, police say it is a much different story. police gave us this video showing what illegal vendors are hawking at the plaza, everything from sulfone cases, baseball cards to bags of candy and nasal spray. officers are working with public works and public health to give out citations and impound what vendors are selling. >> we will have to give you a citation for $250 and impound all of your items that you don't have proof of purchase for. it is illegal in the city of san francisco to be running without a permit. were you aware of that? >> police say they started doing more nighttime controls around the you and plaza last month and have plans to keep

going. the man accused of killing tech executive bob lee is due back in court today. nima momeni is facing a judge will decide whether to keep his trial in the san francisco. momeni's defense argues that holding the city in the trial would be unfair because lee was well known here. today, attorneys will also learn how long it may take to get evidence off of lee's newly released phone. a judge overseeing the georgia interference case against former president donald trump and his allies said that fani willis may stay on the case. as natalie brand explains, only if she removes the special prosecutor she had a romantic relationship with. >> superior court judge scott maccabee says he is giving the state of georgia two options in its criminal case against former president donald trump and codefendant. he says da fani willis may choose to step aside along with her office or special prosecutor nathan wade and withdraw. >> this is all about ensuring

that when we look at this case, and we look at how and when it proceeds to trial, that we feel confident in the process. >> in a 23 page decision, the judge wrote reasonable questions about whether the district attorney and her hand selected lead special assistant district attorney testified untruthfully about the timing of their relationship, further underpinning the finding of an appearance of impropriety and the need to make proportional efforts to cure it. >> it is saying i will not provide -- preside over a case where the legitimacy is in question. >> the request to disqualify willis and wade came from one of trump's codefendants who allege the pair improperly benefited from a romantic relationship. attorneys for other codefendants supported the move. >> i personally feel like the entire office should have been disqualified. >> trump's attorney says he respects the courts decision but will continue to buy to end the case. while the judges allowing it to go forward, he criticized willis for what he

called a tremendous lapse in judgment and, quote, the and professional manner up her testimony last month. >> it is a lie. >> she took the stand to defend herself in the matter, acknowledging a relationship with wade but arguing there was no conflict of interest. >> the timing for the trumpet trial remains uncertain but the appeal could push the court date until after november's presidential election. turning to first alert weather now, here is a live look outside. a wind advisory was just lifted for parts of the bay area but it may be a while before the winds start to die down. meteorologist jessica burch has a look at your weekend forecast. >> it has been a breezy morning for us with blue skies above us and daytime highs later this afternoon hitting the 70s throughout most of the bay area with the exception of half moon bay. we are going to continue to see these blue skies over the santa clara valley all throughout this weekend. it will be gorgeous to get out there and get fresh air. the pollen count is in the medium

to high category. take it slow if you are sensitive to allergies like i. the blue skies are unmatched. it is a beautiful day as we get closer to spring. we have together these windy conditions first and they are little stubborn into the northbay. we see winds moving into the north around 30 miles per hour at max and then it slowly starts to die down into the evening hours tonight. we are left with clear conditions throughout the evening hours tonight and that is how we are setting up for tomorrow too. there is wings over solano happening with the blue angels and the blue skies and of course, the st. patrick's day parade right around the corner at market street. upper 60s tomorrow for our forecast and sunny conditions all afternoon. it is a critical time for san francisco animal care and control as well as other shelters around the bay area as they do their best to take on a national problem, overcrowding. they have reached capacity for the number of dogs that they can take and. a major reason why, they are dealing with this

challenge, millions of dogs and cats across the country have not been spayed or neutered. that delay buildup during the pandemic. how you can help shelters right now. >> it is easy for these bases inside san francisco animal care and control to steal your heart but right now, they need extra love. >> we have animals that are available for adoption. we would love for people to come and adopt them. we are also packed full of stray animals and a group of custody animals. >> virginia donohue is the executive director of sf animal care and control. she explains that custody animals are those at the shelter because of a family emergency. >> we handle 500 of those cases per year. last year, we handled over 800. today we are on track to repeat that number. that is

way more animals than we are used to. >> that only adds to the increase they are seeing from a drop in the spayed and neutered animals. during the pandemic, veterinary care went down and surgeries were delayed . it is not just affecting dogs. they are taking and twice the number of bunnies they would see over six months, even more guinea pigs as well. they are asking anyone thinking of surrendering an animal to check for additional help first. >> we are jammed full. we don't have room. if you're having difficulty, maybe there is some day we can help you and your pets stay together. >> the animals are here because there was an issue with the people taking care of them. virginia says there is nothing wrong with the animals and you can take the word of any of her employees who brought at least one of them home. >> i don't think you can find anyone in this building -- >> that is what makes the job so rewarding and keeps her going even in tough times. purpose driven work that can truly have a positive impact on

more than 100 years ago, chinook salmon near the shasta dam ended up in the cold mountain waters of new zealand where they continue to thrive. in today's project earth, anne makovec has an to bring them back home. >> it is a 300 mile journey that traces the ancestral path of the winter run chinook salmon from the macleod river to the pacific ocean. the annual pilgrimage is led by the winnemen wintu tribe and its chief, caleen sisk. the tribe has never wavered from a core belief. >> whatever happens to the salmon happens to the people. >> salmon populations are a fraction of what they once were and climate change plays a role. >> in the last decade, they have been hit by the one-two

punch of climate change. disruptive heat waves, dryness to extreme drought. >> chuck bon homme heads up the california department of fish and wildlife and says the summer of 2021 was a grim one for the salmon. >> we were in the midst of the peak of our most recent severe drought. these fish are now trapped down on the valley floors and the valley floors are much harder. water that is too hot is legal for salmon. >> california's fish and wildlife just awarded $50 million in grants for 15 projects, one involves the winnemen wintu and the tribes attempt to restore wild salmon. >> is this the right thing to do? it will help us figure out how to save salmon in california. >> they are in a dire position now. they always think, if this project that we are involved with is not successful -- >> caleen sisk requires -- the dam provides flood control, hydroelectric power and water supply. >> it is a weapon of mass

destruction, to me. >> built during world war ii, the shasta dam flooded the winnemen wintu tribe off of their ancestral land. it also blocked the chinook salmon from returning to the icicle macleod river to spohn. in 1994, the fish were federally listed as endangered. the tribe held protests . >> do you want your salmon back? we have them. >> the email was from the head of the maori people of new zealand. turns out , in the 19th century, millions of salmon eggs were exported to 30 states and 14 different countries to create new salmon runs. the only one that thrived is the one in new zealand. sisk and other tribal members travel to see the fish and became determined to bring some back home. >> we want to welcome them home. >> what better way to try to heal past injuries and show the world it is possible to do

things together and make it better. >> in an historic agreement, the tribe is working with fish and wildlife and fisheries to support a joint effort to return the salmon. the wild salmon eggs will fare better than those hatched near the dam. >> the salmon survive, people will survive. if we can get passes from the sacramento river, past the dam so that fish can swim in and out on their own, then we have wild fish again. >> the hope is to get them home safely as soon as possible. >> the tribe will also use grant money to further their quest in establishing a new passage for the salmon to return to the macleod river, bypassing the shasta dam. severe weather including suspected tornadoes have been ravaging the midwest, claiming three lives in western ohio. storms have also swept through indiana, kentucky, and

arkansas. >> oh my god. >> this video shows a massive tornado destroying a community in ohio . across the region, downed trees and property damage, tens of thousands of homes and businesses left without power. local authorities still working to assess the full extent of the damage. residents left severely shaken. >> we knew it was coming this way. we ran to the middle of the house to get the utility room in. 30 seconds later, it hit. you can see the damage. >> the indiana lake area and ohio seems to be hit the worst. back tofirst ouert weather, let's take a live look outside. much calmer here, maybe a little windy outside but the winds are expected to die down. let's check back in with meteorologist jessica burch. >> sunny skies, windy conditions and daytime highs sitting well above average. that is the forecast as we head into friday afternoon. wind gusts are still breezy

throughout the next couple of hours, especially in the north bay all the way up into calistoga. near stinson beach, wind gust up to 30 miles per hour until around 5:00. around dinnertime is where it starts to die down all throughout the bay area. then we are left with weaker winds through this weekend and clear skies lasting into saturday and sunday. we are really not seeing too much activity. we will see sunshine and 60s in the forecast along the peninsula, just in time for a st. patrick's day parade happening in san francisco. it will be beautiful and sunny. we are sharing blue skies with the blue angels too. it will be beautiful and warm too. pack the sunscreen before you head out the door. we are talking about 70s this afternoon. a little bit warmer compared to tomorrow. we will continue to see the blue skies right above me. 72 degrees this afternoon. we are warming up into the used

as rumors continue to swirl around the status of princess kate, her husband william appeared in an event in london, honoring his mother, princess diana. so did his brother harry but not in the same room and not at the same time. we are following the royal drama. >> not even an event honoring princess diana's legacy could bring her estranged sons

together. >> she told me everyone has the potential to give something back. >> william celebrated 20 young social changemakers appearing at the london gala in person. harry congratulated them via video from his home in california only after his brother departed. the last time they were seen together in public was in 2022. just after their grandmother, queen elizabeth died, the royals watcher was on last night's ceremony. >> it is a great shame that william and harry can't unite in person. no one has any expectations it will be any different anytime soon. >> the royals are under uncomfortable scrutiny this week. earlier in the day, while opening a youth charity, william spoke about his wife kate middleton. >> my life is awesome. >> those words and their timing raised eyebrows after kate admitted to digitally editing this family photo that william took. several global news agencies issued a rare kill order to withdraw it. kensington palace is no longer
