department released video of it shot from multiple angles on multiple body worn cameras. even though some of the video is censored for content, it may be difficult to watch. >> reporter: what was probably one of the most chaotic shoot outs imaginable started with a couple of midnight calls to 911 from a night club in southwest santa rosa. >> yes, we have a guy come pulling in here and he's got like a rifle or something. >> reporter: ominous, yes, but it wasn't until just after the first deputy arrived that the chaos would begin. almost as soon as he did, the suspect started shooting at his car. >> got one subject in the car moving around a lot shots fired. shots fired. >> reporter: and almost as soon as more help arrived, it was a full on shoot out. most of it caught on body cam as deputies ducked behind their patrol cars and fired back.

>> he's taking off. >> reporter: as bullets flew back and forth, chaos gave way to confusion. >> who's shooting? >> reporter: but it was clear the deputies were hurt. >> are you hit? >> yes. >> julia's hit! get a car up here now! >> reporter: at one point the suspect took off. deputies chased him, their patrol cars riddled with bullet holes, windows shattered. that's when things would get even more out of control. deputies say the suspect smashed head on into a patrol car as one was trying to set up spike strips. but when another patrol car came flying in to help, it hit the deputy. in the pandemonium, deputies didn't seem to realize they'd hit one of their own. he was trapped underneath the car. >> where is he at? >> i don't know. this is a deputy we know. >> reporter: the deputy hadn't just been run over, he was shot multiple times. they pulled him out of the car and he was

rushed to the hospital. >> all told four deputies were hurt. the suspect died at the scene. the sheriff said he suffered blunt force trauma, probably from the crash, but they're still working out his official cause of death. there will be an investigation into how the deputies responded. and happening right now, 780 shut down in both directions because of police activity. we're told someone started shooting at officers but did not hit them. they're still looking for the person that did that. if you're traveling through the east bay this weekend, steer clear of southbound 680 that's closed for a repaving project that's been delayed twice because of rain. we have information on detours on kpix.com. november's mayoral race in san francisco is already shaping up to be very competitive. multiple

candidates say mayor breed has let the city down and are treeing to unseat her. mark farrell and daniel lurie are front runners after the job. they're all after the job once held by willy brown, an icon in san francisco politics who's about to celebrate a milestone birthday. our andrea nakano interviewed him tonight at his big party and asked him his secret. >> i believe the mayor his honor willy brown has showed up. >> reporter: a crowd packed sullivan's in north beach to see the guest of honor. ♪ happy birthday to you. ♪ >> reporter: a special celebration for former san francisco mayor willy brown. >> as of next wednesday, the 20th of march, i will be exactly 90 years old. >> reporter: after serving two

it was a call that came from 7,000 miles away with the most unexpected question. do you want your fish back? anne makovec on the quest to restore a salmon population that once

thrived in the shasta area with help from their descendants on the other side of the world. >> reporter: it is a 300-mile journey that traces the ancestral path of the winter run chinook salmon from the mcloud river to the pacific ocean. the annual pilgrimage is led by the tribe and its chief sisk. the tribe never wavered from a core belief. >> whatever happens to the salmon happens to the people. >> reporter: salmon populations are a fraction of what they once were, and climate change plays a role. >> at the time last decade they've been hit by the one-two punch of climate change. disruptive heat waves, dryness through extreme drought. >> reporter: chuck bonham heads up the california department of fish and wildlife. he says the summer of 2021 was a grim one for the salmon. >> we were at the peak of the recent severe drought, and these fish are now trapped down

on the valley floors. and the valley floors are much hotter. water that's too hot is lethal for salmon. >> reporter: california's fish and wildlife just awarded $50 million in grants for 15 projects. one involves the tribe's attempts to restore wild salmon to the river. >> this is the right thing to do, and it will help us figure out how to save salmon in california. >> so they're in a dire position now and may go extinct if this project that we're involved with isn't successful. >> reporter: sisk recounts how the problem first began with the shasta dam. while the dam provides flood control, hydroelectric power, and water supplies. >> it is a, um, a weapon of mass destruction to me. >> reporter: built during world war ii, shasta dam flooded the tribe off their ancestral land. it also blocked the chinook from returning to the icy cold

river to spawn. in 1994, the fish were federally listed as endangered. the tribe held protests. then chief sisk got an e-mail. >> do you want your salmon back? we have them. >> reporter: the e-mail was from the head of the mori people of new zealand. it turns out in the 19th century, millions of salmon eggs from the river were exported to 30 states and 14 different countries to create new salmon runs. the only one that thrived is the one in new zealand. sisk and other tribal members traveled to see the fish and became determined the bring some back home to the mcloud. >> we want to welcome them home. >> what better way to try and heal past injuries and show the world it's possible to do things together and make it better? >> reporter: in a historic agreement, the tribe is now working with fish and wildlife and fisheries to support a joint effort to return the

salmon to the mcloud. sisk believes the wild salmon eggs will fare better than those hatched near the dam. >> the salmon survive, people will survive. if we can get a passage from the sacramento river past the dam so that fish can swim in and out on their own, then we have wild fish again. >> reporter: the hope, to get them home safely as soon as possible. all right, let's talk about weather. what a nice day. it was a jacket-free afternoon even. >> right. it was breezy this morning, and then every hour this afternoon, the wind just got lighter and lighter and lighter. >> and it just felt sunny and warm. it was a very foreign feeling at this point. >> guess what? more in store for the weekend. >> finally! the timing lines up! >> exactly. a nice weekend just in time for the st. patrick's day stuff going on. let's get into the details because we have a lot to talk about, and it's mostly good news for us. let's look at the big picture pattern. we're in for a dry

weekend. the offshore winds won't strengthen, and the big picture pattern doesn't shift a lot into early next week. in fact, through the first half of next week, the calm weather pattern is going to continue. futurecast shows a little cloud cover sneaking in along the coast tomorrow. it will make its way into the bay on sunday and inland valleys by monday morning. but the fog and low cloud cover isn't going to last long. it will back up to and even away from the coast each afternoon, and we'll see plenty of sunshine which means your full capacity for solar electricity generation across the bay area. it's what we had today, we'll have it tomorrow, and again on sunday. looking outside right now towards the port of oakland. temperatures started to back down a bit. we made it into the 70s everywhere today. now we're down mostly to the low to mid-50s. but still 64 in the city and 61 in san jose. later tonight with calm winds and clear skies, our temperatures fall into the mid to upper 40s to around 50 degrees. that's very close to normal for this time of year. then temperatures will warm up. bonus dog walking forecast. we

usually do this at 6:00, but wanted to highlight another event happening this weekend at oakland animal services. dita here was just adopted from there, and they're having their spring into action adoption event over the weekend, so they're trying to get as many dogs adopted into their forever homes as possible. i'll put a link on social media as soon as this weather cast is over. if you have room in your house for a permanent resident or foster, they accept those applications as well. temperatures great to spend time outside with adoptable puppies. temperatures upper 60s in oakland. the map is looking good across the board. mid-70s for san jose. that's the same temperature you reached today, and it's almost ten degrees above normal. the rest of the bay area tops out inland in the low 70s. now, along the coast, that's where the biggest change will be noticeable. you were in the low 70s at half moon bay today. only low 60s tomorrow. the breeze not that strong, but noticeable and will impact temperatures. it also drops temperatures back into the upper 60s in san francisco

and oakland. not a bad place to be in the middle of march. temperatures in the north bay reaching back up, not as far into the 70s, but still at or above 70 by tomorrow afternoon. the longer range temperature trend holds on to the inland warmth, especially through the first half of next week. but the ten-day outlook for san jose shows returning to near average or even below average temperatures by saturday, sunday, and monday of the following week. that's associated with a wet weather pattern that will return. this is the six to ten day outlook that takes us from thursday through the following weekend. it's a good chance of those wetter than normal conditions. looks like the cooler weather could stick around for awhile as well. the 8 to 14 day outlook takes us almost to the end of march. inland it will warmth is most noticeable and will last the longest. 70s through the middle of next week. around the bay temperatures back off just a degree or two earlier as we head into the middle of next week. back to closer to normal temperatures by wednesday, and slightly below average

temperatures by thursday and friday. and for the first time in the last several days, we don't have a completely dry seven-day forecast. we do have a chance of showers right on the last day of the seven-day outlook next friday. brings the next chance of light to moderate rainfall into the bay area. something that forecasters will keep our eyes on while everyone else enjoys a dry, warm weekend. all right, after a day like today, i refuse to believe rain is ever coming back to the city. sigh of relief coming up in sports for warriors fans. dubs expect to get their best player back in the line up saturday. it couldn't come at a better time. and in the nfl, one of the scariest players of the generation hanging it up. i have to wonder, though, has he learned who a certain 49er is? let's dive in.

>> that's apparently falcon 9 from spacex. that's very cool. >> look at that. >> let me tell you, if i had just hit the ball and this happened, i would save this for my highlight reel and send it out to everyone. unfortunately that was spacex. it was a falcon 9 rocket that just blasted off from kennedy space center. the spectacle really overshadowed the game. closer to earth, another united flight that took off with sfo landed with fewer parts than it started with. in this case an external panel. it didn't cause any problems on the flight, in fact no one noticed until the plane pulled up to the gate. they're looking into it. just last week at united flight lost a wheel as it took off from sfo for japan bashing a couple of employee cars in the parking lot. a lot of people like to book excursions when you travel, but when you stay at this hotel, you rappel and zip line before you even get to your anne makovec.

all right, when you check into a hotel, the most treacherous part of the journey is usually finding your room at the end of the hall or finding the elevator if you're staying in vegas. matt, you probably had some experiences. >> i just kept losing the darn key cards. >> when you went to the super bowl. i don't know why they let him do that. but at this hotel in wales, getting into your room is an adventure that takes physical skill and nerve. you have to travel around 1400 feet into the earth to reach the world's deepest hotel fittingly called deep sleep. >> you want it nice and slug, but not so tight you give yourself a headache. >> the helmet is going to give you the headache? not descending deep into the pits of the earth single game record this should be every couple's honeymoon. you find out right then and there if it's going to last. >> at check in you get the hard hit, boots, lamp, a mountain
