from cbs news bay area this is the evening edition. >> now at 11:00, a devastating scene in san francisco after a car plows through a bus shelter and into the young family standing there. >> there wasn't any trying to like brake or swerve out of the way. >> we ran over to see and there were bodies everywhere. >> i'm brian hackney. >> trying to make a sense of unimaginable tragedy. the driver of a white suv smashed into a muni stop in the west portal neighborhood of san francisco. >> that's where a family of four were waiting far bus a father and a toddler died at the scene. a mother and an infant as well as the driver are in the hospital tonight. police, firefighter, even mayor london breed rushed to the scene, telling our crew there that accidents like this are

always tough, even for first ponders and the people that witnessed it. >> you can imagine children are involved here and how traumatic that is for a lot of people, especially who were probably here and witnessed the situation occur. >> police are investigating what may have caused the car to careen into the bus stop without any signs of braking. >> da lin's been out there all night for us talking to eyewitnesss and has the latest. >> reporter: police cleared the scene around 7:00 p.m. the crash happened right here. the victims were waiting for a bus at the bus shelter. s that what's left of it, twisted metal and shattered glass. a horrific crash killing a man and a toddler. >> just wild. >> reporter: witnesses say they were father and son, but investigators have not confirmed the relationship. >> we ran over to see, and there were bodies everywhere. >> reporter: authorities say shortly after 12:00 p.m. on

saturday on ulloa street near west portal avenue this wiet mercedes suv plowed into the bus shelter and hit four people. the impact sent bodies flying. witnesses found the toddler about 20 to 30 feet away. the man landed about 40 feet away from the shelter. >> he was laying there. his arm was twisted backwards and his face was mitt open. there was a pool of blood around his head. >> reporter: paramedics rushed a woman and a baby to the hospital. this is what's left of the baby's stroller. >> i just saw a woman laying there and they were trying to resuscitate her. and then someone said that there was also a baby. and then i saw the officer carrying a 2-month-old, at least 2 months. it looked like it was barely breathing and it had broad coming out of its head. >> reporter: they also took the female driver to the hospital. police are investigating and not ready to release a motive. they will not confirm what witnesses were saying, which is

the elderly driver had a heart attack or cardiac arrest. >> they had to have their foot on the gas like flooring it or something. >> reporter: witness marlene gal low says no braking and there are no skid marks on the road. she was cleaning in her living room. >> i could hear something coming, and i looked out the window. and i saw this white car going really fast. and it was on the wrong side of the road. and it was kind of moving closer and closer to the curb. and it must have been -- i don't know how fast it was going, but to me it felt like 50 miles an hour, something like that, way faster than it was supposed to be going. and i just stood here and i stood here and i saw the car smack into the pole at the bus stop down at the end of the corner. >> reporter: witnesses estimate the suv was going 50 to 70 miles per hour. marlene says her heart sank because there were a lot of people on the street celebrating saint patrick's day. >> i was just standing here, and i just couldn't believe what i'd seen outside my own

house. >> reporter: authorities say there were a lot of witnesses because the bus stop is located near the west portal muni station. a bus driver also saw the crash. in fact, drivers honked repeatedly to alert pedestrians about the fast-moving suv. >> before the crash i heard honking. >> reporter: instead of celebrating a joyous holiday, marlene and others are now praying for the victims and their families. >> i'm a therapist, you know a mental health therapist, so i like deal with other people's traumas all the time. and here i am having my own trauma right in my own room. >> reporter: witnesses believe the victims at the bus stop were all related, mom, dad, and two kids, but san francisco police say they simply don't have that information at this time and it's too early to say what's going to happen to that driver, whether she'll face any charges. of the three victims taken to the hospital, two were in critical condition. one in stable condition. >> and you can stay up to date on more developments on this

story here on kpix and on kpix.com or streaming on the cbs news bay area. and within the last hour or so, another big crash in san francisco, this one in pacific heights. video posted to the citizen app shows a different white mercedes suv flipped over on its side. debris is scattered everywhere. you can see multiple cars parked along the street were damaged. thankfully, no one was hurt in those parked cars. sfpd telling us that the driver of the flipped car has been taken to the hospital. no word yet on the cause of this crash. and now to oakland, where some would-be robbers attempted to break into a bank using their car as a battering ram. happened downtown at citi national bank on broadway. four to five suspects were in an infiniti sedan when it smashed into the bank's large glass windows, but they couldn't break all the way in. suspects ran away before police arrived. the investigation is ongoing. benicia police say two men

are in jail tonight after a freeway gun battle with police. the men were suspected of armed robbery. police say when an officer tried to stop their car in the area of columbus and rose friday night, the suspects opened fire. they then took off and eventually crashed on a 780 off-ramp. one suspect continued to trade gunshots with police and was eventually found hiding in the bushes. benicia police were joined by officers from more than a dozen jurisdictions, including the solano county s.w.a.t. team. there are still some races up the air from this month's election. >> we still don't know who will face former san jose mayor sam liccardo in a runoff to replace congresswoman anna eshoo. kelsi thorud is tracking the race and she has the latest on where things stand tonight.

>> reporter: on election night, santa clara county supervisor joe simitian seemed confident he would win enough votes in california's district 16 congressional race to get on the november ballot, but since that night the race for second just keeps getting tighter. now over a week later with still no firm answer on who will join former san jose mayor sam liccardo in the general election. simitian told me he remains confident in his campaign. >> we know that there are votes to be counted in both county, san mateo and santa clara county. >> reporter: simitian held second place in the vote totals for over a week after primary night, but on wednesday state representative evan low overtook him for the first time. >> now it's neck and neck, a virtual tie, and we'll know a whole lot more in the next few days. >> reporter: we reached out to evan low's campaign for an interview. they told us they couldn't fit one in with his schedule but sent us this statement saying in part, quote, while there are still votes left to be counted, i am

encouraged by the latest results that have put our campaign in the lead. i am grateful to all of my supporters and look forward to all votes being counted in this race. melinda jackson is a professor of political science at san jose state university. she says the way this race has played out may be an indication of the type of supporters each candidate has. >> you know, we can speculate that the people who are really on top of this and paying a lot of attention and voting early, getting their ballots in ahead of time, you know, might be older voters with a little more time on their hands or maybe people who are more familiar with someone like joe simitian, who's been in politics for a number of decades. whereas those last-minute voters might tend to be younger, maybe looking for a younger candidate like evan low, who does represent, you know, a new generation. >> reporter: no matter the end result, both low and simitian

to the nation's real estate market that could see expensive commissions somewhat disappear. after the national association of realtors agreed to pay $418 million in damages to settle a series of lawsuits alleging that it conspired to boost agent commissions. commission rates in the u.s. are among the high nest the world with an average of 5% to 6%. comes out to about $100 billion paid in commissions each year, which could now be reduced by up to 30%. >> i think for sellers you're going to negotiate with your agent to come up with a fee that is reasonable for you. for buyers it's a game changer. you may decide you don't even want a realtor. >> a year from now we might see 10% or more fewer realtors. brokers i think are going to need to step up their game in terms of what is their value proposition. >> the settlement deal still has to get approval the courts, but if it all goes smoothly,

right? this was a hard day to come into work. tomorrow's going to be the same way. just a quick look back at how spectacular this day was, and it's a good preview of what's coming for tomorrow. these are the numbers. daytime highs today were low to mid-70s, as a time lapse, there's the marine layer built out along the coast. more on that in a second. but look what average would have been. we're five to eight degrees above average right now. it's going to get a little warmer over the next few days. so here's tomorrow. more low to mid-70s for sunday. monday these numbers go up two, maybe three degrees from here. technically monday is going to be the warmest dma the whole thing. when we start out tomorrow morning, watch a little bit of the marine layer build in here. there's not a lot to it, but it's a little more than we've seen. when we look ahead to monday, i've switched this now, we're going to watch monday morning. the start of your workweek, it looks like may gray in the morning. fill in all the valleys. you get that perfect little outline. so here we are

in mid-march, and we're doing something that's a lot more mayish in terms of the clouds. they're not going to stick around long. by the time we get to like 9:00 in the morning, they're gone. monday is more blue sky than anything else and di die thyme high daytime highs in the mid-70s. the colors show you where you're above average or below average. we say good-bye to the oranges and the blues come back. that was system coming our way with more rain. it's not a major storm, but there is rain coming by friday, saturday, sunday. so enjoy this pattern that we've got now. we're not staying here and just going into summer, there's still some of winter to go. we'll see that system to our east can't touch us right now. we've got to look out here for our next system. the pattern that's keeping us so sunny and warm is like a big block in the atmosphere. you'll see it, everything's got to go around it, it's like an invisible shield. by friday that system breaks through. here's where we stand on this storm. there's a little bit of

disagreement like we've had with so many of these storm this is winter, like five or six days out. and right now, you know, we're just about, say, six days out from this system coming in, maybe seven so. it looks like a friday through perhaps the entire weekend. watch what happens in this one particular forecast. it just kind of takes its weet time working through. so you'll see when we get to the seven-day forecast there's a chance of rain starting on friday and going through next weekend. if we look at rainfall totals, they are not big. if you think of this as a three or four-day system 0.5 an inch of rain, even 0.75 an inch of rain over that amount of time is not a lot. that's one model's take on it. we have to look at another. we've been doing this all winter. we've had to use both of these as a comparison because this one has a slightly different idea. says actually about 1.5 inches over four days. that's still not a big deal over four days, but it would be more noticeable rain, obviously. bottom line is, there's rain back there. so enjoy the right around 70 and plenty of sunshine for the next

49ers re-signed guard feels ya know to a one-year deal on friday. he did get a different kind of signing bonus. he posted it was the best day because he had a new contract, but he also found out he no longer has to deal with rams star aaron donald twice a year. donald announced his retirement on friday. i know that brock purdy is going to sleep better because of that. and speaking of quarterbacks, former bears gun slinger, yes, i said former, because justin fields is headed to pittsburgh. he's going to likely back up the newly signed russell wilson. chicago traded fields after only three seasons because they are expected to take caleb williams with the number one pick in the draft next month. long beach state head coach dan munson was fired on monday. however, he wanted to finish out the season, and he wasn't ready to clean out his office yet, so he kept coaching in the conference tournament, and the
