local communities. you can notice patchy fog going into work or school this morning. in san francisco the coit tower is lit up in green for st. patrick's day. temperatures are a little bit above average. we will dive into that. we have rain later into this week. here is what it is looking like on futurecast, cloudy conditions rolling in in the early morning hours that we are seeing today. we will see a repeat tomorrow too. this is 9:30, a blanket of clouds throughout the area. it's a mild forecast for us to kick off the week. we had the sunshine over the weekend and we'll see more into this afternoon. around lunchtime that blanket starts to peel back along the coast. speaking of the rain, it's really not until later this week when we see numbers increase. that's going to happen around thursday evening into friday morning. we'll see unsettled weather

into our weekend forecast too. i will have more on that and we will time that out in your first alert forecast. for now, the roads are dry. >> they are. that's always a good start when you are up on a monday morning. bay bridge toll plaza is cruising along for the commute into san francisco. most east bay freeways are looking good. all lanes open south 680. the weekend closure, there were tough delays. i heard reports for up to three hours. thankfully road repairs are done and 680 is clear and open. let's start with a fire at a high school in pleasanton, crews doing battle as flames tore through part of the high school. looking live, we have a camera crew on the scene. you see it looks pretty quiet right now. this is a newer part of

the building you are looking at. we understand the fire started yesterday just as the sun set in a gymnasium next door that's said to be about 100 years old. to better video, this is last night as the community members rushed to the scene to see what the smoke and sirens were about. you could hear the sirens and all the flashing lights. the goal was to preserve the newer parts of the building from the older part of the building that was on fire. firefighters prevented it from spreading to those parts of the school which by the way serves 3,000 students. as we look at the scene, despite damage, classes will happen today as it was just the one gymnasium area. we are following up on a death case of a woman found on the ground bleeding in the bay

view. it was in that neighborhood last summer that the story began. video exists apparently that's pretty key to the case. san francisco police and mayor say release it. so also does the asian justice movement. the group believes the death can be a homicide and hate crime and successfully pressure police to open the case. a reporter from sf standard uncovered the story of a woman pushing wu. police reportedly arrested that woman last week accused of assaulting another elderly chinese woman. following a corruption conviction, former chief of the san francisco public utilities commission will learn his sentence. a jury found he accepted bribes in exchange for bidding contests. he could face up to 15 years in prison. street safety advocates will hold a vigil at the site of a horrific crash in san

francisco. you see growing vigils at a muni stop. a third victim from saturday's crash has died. the family was heading to the zoo to celebrate the parents' wedding anniversary. >> reporter: there are two make shift memorials. the main one at a bus stop and a smaller memorial about 60 feet away. the crash happened over there but the impact set the toddler flying. he landed and died right here. witnesses, neighbors, well wishers dropped off flowers, stuffed animals and toys. safety advocates left a white stroller and three pairs of shoes, one for each victim that died in the crash. many came to pay respects. across from the bus stop, she

ran out when she heard the crash. >> it's very heart breaking and difficult to unsee what we saw. i am still shaking just thinking about it. >> reporter: she had a hard time sleeping, thinking about the toddler who was in a stroller thrown about 60 feet away from the bus stop. >> the stroller was clearly destroyed. he was still strapped in there. >> reporter: the father landed about 70 to 80 feet from the point of impact. witnesses say both victims were covered in blood and died at the scene. paramedics rushed the mom and a baby to the hospital. the mom died from her injuries. the infant is suffering from life threatening injuries. >> you want to hug your kids closer and really be mindful of every moment you have with each other. >> reporter: close friends declined an on camera interview but share the father is diego, 40 years old. the mother is 38.

toddler is one and a half, and the infant is about two months old. both boys, the family lives in the mission district. saturday was their wedding anniversary so they decided to take the bus to celebrate the anniversary with the boys at the san francisco zoo. >> how a car can be racing that fast. >> reporter: that's what police are investigating. some believe the elderly driver of the white mercedes suv suffered from some medical condition. police cannot confirm. witnesses say she was going between 50 and 70 miles per hour in the wrong direction, no signs of braking, and no skid marks. >> saddened, disturbed, disheartened. we wanted to pay our respects. we have five lilies. >> i really just pray for the family and for everyone. >> reporter: many neighbors are praying the baby will survive

and receive a lot of support. >> i am just unable to move forward. i need to have closure with what i saw. i can't really unsee the carnage that happened yesterday. >> reporter: friends say diego was originally from brazil. his family is flying to the u.s. the wife was originally from portugal, her family also flying to the bay area. as for the elderly driver, she's in stable condition. it's unclear if she'll face charges. >> that vigil tonight will happen about 5:00. all police have said is they don't think traffic engineering was a factor in the case. traveling can get more comfortable in the near future. announcing a new bill today that will provide more funding to transit systems. it is to improve regional integration by setting what parts could get a boost and seamlessly integrating transit throughout the area. no details on where

looking live across the bay to oakland where cry for change continues. businesses are plagued by crime. the oakland mayor says she has a plan for safety. you will learn more about that. it reportedly includes partnership between police and community groups. we will be there and drill down on that. good morning in san jose. how does being part owner in the business you work for sound? it's an innovation and your san jose representative is pushing bill for worker owned cooperative businesses. right now it's a groundwork bill that establishes a council on worker coops that would be led by department of labor. part of the legislation is a small business pilot program offering loans if you want to start a business. taking a live look outside on this monday, are you waking up feeling the madness? it's bracket time. have you filled yours out? i did actually close my eyes and choose. duke is

of low pressure that's starting to develop. in our wednesday forecast we see it become more defined and that slowly creeps into our local areas in the bay and all the way to the sierra where they will get snow. that's going to last friday, saturday, sunday. we are keeping a close eye on long range models. rain chances start to increase as early as thursday evening into friday afternoon. that's going to last until early portions of this weekend. let's take it step back and talk more about today. unlike yesterday we will see more clouds but like yesterday, we are seeing 70s again into concord and antioch, similar trend to the east bay and santa clara valley. along the peninsula, mostly 60s today but it's a beautiful day to get fresh air. we are keeping a close eye on that pollen count. over the weekend it was pretty wild. into the next couple days we'll see sun and clouds into

our tuesday. friday into saturday we'll see afternoon and evening showers fill the bay area. that's going to linger into our saturday forecast. unlike this weekend where it was park day after park day or if you had outdoor activities, this would have been the weekend to do it. g. let's talk about the freeways. we are off to a pretty good start on this monday. it's not looking too bad yet. that can change when the metering lights get turned on. right now easy breezy into san francisco. enjoy that while you can as you start your monday. you have plenty time for that extra cup of coffee, maybe an extra bowl of cereal. everything is clear with the exception of the ride out of tracy to the altamont pass. work your way west bound towards the dublin interchange, taking south 680, great news,

all lanes are open from the weekend closure that was from the interchange to koopman on south 680. there was a lot of traffic over the weekend. it looks like they wrapped up pretty early. lanes opened i think after 3:00 a.m. you see it is already busy for the altamont pass commute. our other major freeways are looking pretty good. 5:17. college basketball's march madness is officially in full swing which means it's time to prep those brackets. are any odds in your favor? we hear from the experts next. a live look outside before we head to break. it's soupy out there as we look at a coit tower that's still reflecting the luck of the irish. we'll be right back.

5:31. good morning. we climbed to the top of salesforce tower. give yourself for taking those steps on a monday and get coffee and sit back. i give you permission. nice to have you with us. it was a gorgeous weekend. i am so grateful for the sunshine. >> all the poppies are starting to bloom. it is so gorgeous in our state especially after a crazy wet season we've had. let's take a look at what's going on. it is off to a dry start, similar to yesterday throughout the bay area. the only difference is we are seeing patchy fog in local communities. we are starting in the santa clara valley. it's dry and clear throughout most of the communities. visibility

on the road is not an issue. marine layer is floating around some of the bay area as we wake up. that is going to stick around for the next couple hours meaning if you do encounter patchy fog, take it extra slow. it's dry and mild to start the week. we are going to see a big change in the forecast with more rain returning in the bay. that's going to end that dry period we have been enjoying so much. it was such a gorgeous weekend, sunny as can be. here is the marine layer floating around for us, that blanket of clouds pulls back along the coast into this afternoon and we are left with beautiful sunshine throughout today, inland areas, along the coast. we'll see a little bit of a back and forth. offshore just into the next couple days we are keeping a close eye on the area of low pressure that's starting to develop. that's going to be the system bringing rain as early as friday afternoon and lasting into our weekend forecast. i will time that out and let you know how long that will last and how much rain we can expect coming up in a bit.

how are the roads? >> they are looking great. bay bridge is still clear, no metering lights yet. they'll be on in the next couple minutes. it's a quiet commute so far. everything is showing green with the exception of the ride into the altamont pass. that is getting slow. super commuters you always have an early start to the ride out of tracy on to 580. that's pretty typical with speeds around 10 miles per hour. >> thanks. fire at a high school in pleasanton. crews did battle as the flames tore through. looking live, we can show you what the picture looks like. the sun is into the up but right now it looks pretty sedate. the fire started as the sun set sunday in a gymnasium said to be about 100 years old. you can hear the alarm going off and you see the fierce fire fight on the left side of your

screen. this is video that came in as community members raced to the scene to see what the smoke and sirens are about. this is an old bidding that's hosted many community events so it is a loss. there is an up side. the firefighters prevented fire from spreading to newer parts of the school. that school serves nearly 3,000 students. as we look at more video, you see students running to the scene to see what it was. despite the damage the students we understand will be in class today. apparently that damage was just contained to the one gym area. many young people say they get their news like the fire on social media. supreme court taking up social media and moderation deciding whether biden administration's efforts to police posts on socials violates first amendment. this is rooted in arguments about online misinformation about 2020 election and covid-19, a razors edge for justices.

misinformation can be harmful. on the other side, barring communications on social media can limit addressing issues of public concern. we'll watch this one closely. a warning for chevy camaro owners. thieves are using key cloning devices to steal the cars. san francisco and los angeles pd report up tick in camaro thefts. individuals should take extra steps to protected themselves and action is needed higher up to be sure consumers are better protected. chevy camaros high on car thieves' radars in northern and southern california. a look at sfpd's numbers, 21 camaro thefts in 2022, 46 in 2023 and through the first two and a half months of this year, 15 camaro thefts. in los angeles the problem is more prevalent. around this time last year,

lapd reported seven stolen. this year, 90 so far. the lapd sergeant tells our team at kcal police find many of of these at illegal street take overs or the thieves try and resell the camaros. >> often find them where they turn around and are posting on social media to sell them. a 40, $50,000 car, they're selling it for $3,000. >> many have heard of the increase in key fob cloning. >> executive director of consumer watch dog. >> we have seen this problem with other cars impact consumers' ability to get auto insurance. >> she says insurance companies can't just increase prices overnight. >> they have to go to the insurance commissioner, prove that the thefts have caused increased losses and get approval for any increase in

prices. >> reporter: advice to camaro owners. >> if it's something near and dear to your heart, install a kill switch, a second tracker, even products such as low jack, those are good products that help us help find the vehicles. >> on top of that this should be a wake up call to manufacturers. >> we can tell individual consumers there is a flaw with your car. these are ways to try and protect your car from being stolen. what we need is action higher up at the manufacturer level to be sure it isn't so easy to clone those fobs. >> it's not just big cities in california keeping an eye on this. r ohrnert park just warned people about the issue. >> cars are being stolen at a

slower rate, 2400 to this point, not as many as this time in 2023. in san francisco there have been about 1100 car thefts to date. that's about the same as last year. this month as we celebrate women's history, a local author in the south bay hopes her latest novel helps provide more positive female characters. >> she wants to see more representation in books because she said that wasn't easy to find while growing up on other side of the world. >> shawn chitnis is live at stanford university with more on her story and her new book. good morning. we love to support our local authors. >> reporter: good morning. she has quite the story, kyla was born and raised in singapore and comes to stanford to get undergrad and masters. she's surrounded by silicon valley so ends up getting a job in the tech industry. that ends up being quite the setting for her new back, a novel, and the main

character that stars in it. even as a published author who has already written more than one book, it's still weird for kyla to read her own words. there is pride in the stories she's telling for an audience she believes needs more like them. >> i was by myself in california. i was homesick and lonely and really frustrated with the rising antiasian racism going on around the world at the time. >> reporter: she had graduated from college in 2021 and taken a job as data analyst in silicon valley. she was flying home for christmas from singapore. >> i took out my laptop and typed the first line, zoe was having an absolute blast. that's what i try to portray about myself to the people

around me. >> reporter: she says she wasn't being honest and near would her main character in the novel valley verified. >> it was a balmy summer evening, the kind that showed manhattan at its best. >> reporter: main character zoe decides to give up the life in new york working in the fashion industry for a job with app start up in silicon valley. it's her second novel. the first was about her home country of singapore. >> i wanted to see portrayed in a positive manner, fun, vibrant, joyful instead of labeled as villains. >> reporter: it's fiction but her characters are based on many people in her real life. kyla isn't afraid to take on serious challenges of the tech industry including how women are seen and treated. >> she does not feel the sense of belonging. every step she feels like it is an uphill

battle. no one believes she belongs and as a result she starts to believe she does not belong there. >> reporter: as well as fashion of the bay area which comes up in this passage from the book as zoe heads to california. >> you are going to be the best thing that's happened to silicon valley. promise you will never lose your style and become part of the group. >> reporter: she still may be shy speaking her words out loud, kyla hopes others enjoy reading this story as much as she did writing it. kyla says she believes the trend is headed in the right direction when it comes to more diversity of authors and stories in the publishing world. it's important to emphasize in her stories it's not just about women but it's about women helping other women because she feels too often women are in situations where they feel like they are forced to compete against each other. back to you. >> so true. it's about lifting

what i did on the weekend. i drove to napa and sonoma because i saw the beautiful story on the mustard blooms and it is there. the bees were buzzing, a beautiful scene in the napa and sonoma area. absolutely fantastic. make sure to get there before the blooms become fertilizer. it is so gorgeous. i understand that we are one of the big exporters in the country. >> i didn't realize that. i feel like that's cooler than winning the powerball. seeing that nature in full force. the powerball is cool too but to answer your question, i did not get one. not this time, not next time, not the time after that. it is a little bit cool and a little bit cloudy. it's a mild forecast today, similar to yesterday, just a lot more clouds as we make up on our virus outbreakcal reality map. as we wake up and head out,

this couldn't impact visibility at the surface level if you lived in the santa clara valley but it might a little bit more in the north bay. patchy fog specifically in the north bay and a little bit along the coastline. that starts to clear up fast. we are left with beautiful sunshine and we'll see a repeat tomorrow with clouds and sun all the way until our friday forecast. really it's a mild week in the bay area. temperatures slowly get cooler day by day and the big change in the forecast happens friday. we have a new area of low pressure starting to develop. it is just offshore. i showed you this earlier. as that starts to rotate closer we will see a splash of showers into our weekend forecast and temperatures will dip a lot. these 70s today will quickly turn to upper 50s and lower 60s. a lot different for us. we are waking up to mild conditions. later today we'll hit upper 60s near oakland. low

60s in san francisco, upper 60s in red wood city. these clouds will start to dissipate into the afternoon and we will be left with mild temperatures and sunshine into the santa clara valley where we will hit 75 degrees today. i want to show you the bay area forecast and inland forecast because there are big changes starting to happen this weekend. starting friday, showers return to the forecast. saturday we will see it on and off all day. sunday it starts to taper in inland areas. along the bay you might see showers linger a bit longer too into our sunday forecast. other than that today and tomorrow with sunshine, it will be a beautiful opportunity to get fresh air, low 60s expected tomorrow. a little bit different compared to today. we'll continue to cool down to the 50s heading to the saturday forecast and sunday too. how are the roads? they're starting to get busy in some spots especially at the bay bridge. that's around the time of morning where we will see brake lights for commuters out of the east

bay. bay bridge via east shore freeway, that's crowded. you do have the back up starting to build as you head west into san francisco. the metering lights are on and it is busy across the upper deck. you see a bit of red on our censor, so speeds dipping down in some spots to about 35 miles an hour. our other slow pot is into the altamont pass. if you are a super commuter, working out of tracy on to 580, speeds down to 12 miles per hour. it's a little bit better once you make the connector there. past i would say north flynn the rest of the way looks good. once you get to the dublin interchange and want to go south 680, all lanes are open following the weekend closure. everybody was irish on sunday. the big anniversary for an east bay city celebrating
