little bit fog. it's hard to believe when you look at the santa clara valley. we have fog throughout our coastal areas, patchy conditions into the north bay too. we are off to a cool, cloudy start for many of us. taking a look at the coit tower from our live camera, still green for st. patrick's day yesterday. it's a beautiful way to kick off the week. we have a little bit patchy fog and that will bleed off this afternoon. we are left with sun and clouds today and for the next couple days. temperatures are a little above average but we will see them cool down day by day as we await more rain starting friday into our weekend forecast. this dry break is perfect timing because it lasts throughout the work week. it is a little inconvenient because unlike this weekend we just had with beautiful sunshine and temperatures above average, it will look different into friday, saturday, sunday this week. i will talk more about that in a bit. we will break apart that storm. it's still

well offshore and it's not impacting us just yet. taking a look at long range models into wednesday and thursday, it starts to add a lot of energy. that's when we will see it impact our coastline. into saturday, they're going to get a splash of showers. sierra will get a little bit of snow. i will have more on that coming up. >> thank you. a great start to the morning commute for the most part. we are really just seeing the usual slowing. metering lights are on. at 6:00 you have brake lights building past the over pass into san francisco, slowest approach is off of west bound 80 but ever so slightly as you head through emeryville. 580, 880 looking good. 880 looks great both directions through hayward. a couple minor crashes but nothing blocking lanes. we are seeing brake lights as you head into the altamont but this is pretty

typical for super commuters. fire last night, flames through part of amador valley high school. we are monitoring the scene. the fire started as the sun set inside a gymnasium said to be about 100 years old. this is video last night as community members came to see what the smoke and sirens were about. despite the damage there is an up side. firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to newer parts of the school that serves nearly 3,000 students, according to u.s. news this morning. as we look at the scene video, despite damage school officials say that the young people who raced to the scene, they will be back in class. the school is okay and most of the damage just contained to the one gym area. looking live at san francisco and follow up to the death of a woman found on the ground bleeding in a bay view neighborhood last summer. here is an update. we understand video exists that's key and

critical. san francisco police and mayor said they want it released and so does the asian justice movement. that group believes the death could be a homicide and hate crime. they successfully pressured police to reopen the case. a reporter from sf standard uncovered the story of a woman pushing wu. police reportedly arrested that woman last week accused of assaulting another elderly chinese woman. following corruption, conviction and former chief of the san francisco public utilities commission will learn his sentence. a jury found kelly accepted bribes in exchange for influencing public bidding process and steering contract awards as well as bank fraud charges according to the northern district of california. he could face up to 15 years in prison. street safety advocates will hold a vigil at the cited of a horrific crash. we see the

community putting up other vigils honoring the affected family. this is after news that a third victim, a mother, died from saturday's crash. those close to the family say they were heading to the zoo to celebrate the parents' wedding anniversary. an suv ran into the family of four. the father and toddler died on the scene. the rest were rushed to the hospital. we spoke with neighbors in the area when it happened who say they were very distraught about the entire situation. >> just very heart breaking, very difficult for us to unsee what we saw. >> you want to hug your kids closer and really be mindful of every moment you have with each other. >> the elderly driver was also taken to the hospital. we understand she is in stable condition. but because it's an ongoing investigation, it is unclear if she will face any charges. that vigil we just mentioned will happen around 5:00 tonight. all san francisco

police have said is they don't think traffic engineering was a factor in the case. state senator scott wiener and announcing a new bill that will provide funding to transit systems. it is to provide regional integration by studying what parts could get a boost and integrating transit throughout the bay area. no details on where funding will come from just yet. 6:07. oakland business owners say keeping the doors open in some places is nearly impossible because of crime. facing recall and major criticism, mayor thao says she has a fix. the community problem and push for solutions and safety. hot property. a warning this morning if you are taking your camaro to work. a live look outside before break on this monday. good morning to you. grab that

looking live across the bay to oakland where cry for change continues this morning. businesses say they are plagued by crime especially in the

hegenberger corridor. oakland mayor thao says she has a plan for safety. you will learn more later this morning which reportedly includes partnerships between police and community groups. good morning in san jose. how does being part owner in the business you work for sound? your san jose representative pushing bill for worker owned cooperative businesses. right now it establishes a council and would be with the department of labor. it also includes money for small businesses who have pilot programs that offer loan start ups. a live look outside on this monday. people might be waking up groggy off of st. patrick's day. as they rub their eyes and look at the bracket, it might be a lot to take in. hopefully

san jose which is pretty wild. we talked about futurecast. i want to show you our rainfall models one more time if you are just waking up with us friday into saturday. that's the pivot in the forecast where we will see an increased chance of showers. it can produce a half inch to an inch of rain throughout the bay area. we will keep a close eye on this system. it's starting to move to us and pacific northwest too. lots of changes are around the corner. it's going to be beautiful today and tomorrow, really similar forecasts. day by day notice temperatures start to dip down a little bit more. we are in the 60s again for inland areas. by wednesday, plenty sunshine so you won't notice a thing. the cold front approaches and by weekend we are talking about low 60s for inland areas. let me show you the bay, upper 60s today

turning into 50s. a ten degree jump all from the system sitting well offshore. get some fresh air. i know the pollen count has been pretty high. we will see that improve as we head into this week. >> thank you. let's talk about the freeways as you get up and moving on this monday. there are spots we are starting to see brake lights building. overall, checked with chp and it's not that bad of a drive. so far so good at least as far as crashes. it's usual brake lights at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is building up as you work west bound towards the area across upper deck into san francisco, approaches west bound 80 seems to be the slowest for now. that can change depending on the commute. we are seeing all kinds of green. no delays on 84. east bay route are looking good. we are tracking brake lights to the altamont pass but this is to be expected, typical for a monday with commuters out

off to a perfect start with clear conditions at the surface level. visibility is great getting to work, to school. into san francisco and past that into the marin head lands and into napa and sonoma, we are seeing a little bit cloud layer float between the mountains. as we wake up and head out, we will continue to see that marine layer influence the bay. temperatures today are still above average and we will see a similar forecast throughout the next couple days ahead of rain returning closer to friday and saturday. i will time that out for you in a second. that cloud layer is pulling back slowly this afternoon along our coastline. we will see sunnier skies. clouds return into the over night hours and we rinse and repeat tomorrow and wednesday and thursday. it's not until friday where a cold front approaches. that's where we will see a change in the forecast. temperatures will dip fast and we will see a lot of rain around the corner. as we time that out, it makes sense

at the climate prediction center with what they're saying. we are seeing wetter than normal conditions not only in the bay area but widespread throughout california and the southwest. i will have more on that in a bit. >> thank you. let's peek at some bay area bridges. it's not a bad monday commute across golden gate bridge. a few cars are making their way south 101 towards the area out of marin. we are not seeing crowded freeways through the area. it's different at the bay bridge. metering lights are on. they've been on since about 5:35. business as usual as you head into san francisco. you have brake lights across the upper deck. we are seeing the slow crawl out of richmond into berkeley and into emeryville. west bound 80 commute is the slowest approach to the bridge. this morning we can report there was a fire at a school in pleasanton. crews did battle as

violates the first amendment. this is really rooted in arguments about online misinformation about the 2020 election and covid-19 and it's kind of a razors edge. on one side misinformation can be harmful. other side, all out ban on communications on social media can limit addressing issues of public concern. we'll be watching what the high court does on this one. did you hear about former president trump using the term blood bath if he is not elected and referring to people in jail for january 6 capitol insurrection as hostages. even mike pence says trump's words are unacceptable. president biden calling for humanitarian aid to gaza and cease fire between israel and hamas. he also spoke of getting israeli hostages freed as well as a two state solution.

netanyahu meanwhile plans to press ahead with plans for military campaign against hamas in rafah. chevy camaro owners thieves are using key cloning devices to steal the cars. >> reporter: san francisco pd and los angeles pd report up tick in camaro thefts. individuals should take extra steps to protect themselves and action is needed higher up to make sure consumers are better protected. chevy camaros are high on car thieves' radar in northern and southern california. 21 thefts reported in 2022, 46 in 2023. through the first two and a half months of this year, 15 camaro thefts. around this time last year, lapd reported seven stolen. this year, 90 so far. an lapd

time in 2023. in san francisco thereby about 1100 to date, about the same as last year. we celebrate women's history and a local author hopes her latest novel helps provide more positive characters will ever she wants more representation in books because that wasn't easy to find when she was growing up on the other side of the world. >> shawn chitnis is live at stanford university with more on her story and new book. good morning. we love to support our local authors. >> reporter: good morning. she has quite the story in this new novel, almost rivals her background. she was born and raised in singapore and came to stanford for her undergrad and masters degrees. she was interested in the tech industry, got a job there and has written another book. the story line and main character is similar to the one she tells

herself. even as a published author who has already written more than one book, it's still weird for kyla to read her own words. there is pride in the story she's telling for an audience kyla believes needs more like them. >> i was living by myself in california. i was homesick and lonely and really frustrated with risek antiasian racism going on around the world. >> reporter: she had graduated from college in 2021 and taken a job as a data analyst in silicon valley. a few months into the career path she was flying home for christmas to singapore unsure what she would be able to share with her family and friends about her new life. >> i took out my laptop and typed the first line, zoe was having an absolute blast. that's an image i try to portray about myself to the people around me.

>> reporter: she wasn't being honest and neither would her main character in the new novel valley verified. >> zoe was having an absolute blast. it was a balmy summer evening, kind that showed manhattan at its best. >> reporter: her main character decides to give up the life in new york working in the fashion industry for a job with an app start up in silicon valley. it's her second novel. the first was about characters in singapore. >> i wanted to see asians like myself portrayed in a more positive manner as start of something fun, vibrant, joyful instead of labeled as villains. >> it is all fiction but she says her characters are based on many people she's come across in real life. kyla isn't afraid to take on some of the serious challenges in the tech industry. >> she already does knott feel the sense of belonging. every step of the way she feels like it is an uphill battle. odds

are stacked against her. no one believes she belongs there. as a result she starts to believe she does not belong there. >> reporter: as well as fashion of bay area which comes up in this passage from the book. >> you are going to be the best thing that's ever happened to silicon valley. promise me you will never lose your style and become part of the patagonia group. you are a prada girl true and true. >> she may be shy speaking her words out loud but kyla hopes others enjoy reading this story as much as she did writing it. kyla tells us she believes the trend is headed in the right direction as we see more diversity in authors and the stories they are telling. she wants to emphasize one part. they are not just about women but they are about women helping other women. she thinks that's so important because often she feels like women are forced to compete against each other. >> thank you. tech and fashion,
