san francisco that killed three family members. police tell kpix they have arrested the driver. good afternoon. the crash happened while the family was on the way to the san francisco zoo to celebrate the parents' anniversary. they were waiting for a muni bus when the suv ran over them. the driver is a 78-year-old. she was booked into jail on several charges including felony vehicular manslaughter. the crash happened saturday around noon killing the father and toddler. the mother and baby were taken to the hospital where the mother died yesterday. the baby, the only survivor, suffered critical injuries. we spoke to a witness who lives nearby who ran out when she heard the crash. >> it was very heart breaking. it's very difficult for us to unsee what we saw yesterday. i am still shaking just thinking about it. a memorial is growing at

the bus stop. witnesses and neighbors have been dropping off stuffed animals and toys. the father is identified as diego. the toddler is about one and a half and the baby is about two months old, both boys. >> you want to hug your kids closer and really be mindful of every single moment you have with each other. >> friends say diego was originally from brazil. his family is flying to the u.s. his wife was from portugal and their family is also on the way to bay area. street safety advocates will hold a vigil this evening around 5:00. oakland officials gave update on efforts to crackdown on crime along hegenberger corridor. the city has increased police presence and expanded ambassador program in areas experiencing high levels of crime. officials announced

security cameras will be installed near the oakland airport. >> we still have a lot of work in front of us. we will continue to do more. this is just the beginning. however, we remain persistent and continue to do this work and i know that not only will we have the data to represent the successes we have, but we will have a stronger, a cleaner, and safer oakland. >> residents and people who work in the hegenberger corridor say crime is out of hand forcing businesses to close including the city's only in and out. san jose police are looking for two suspects accused of shooting a puppy. police say a german shepherd named marlie was shot in the head as her owner was sleeping. this happened near ann darling drive in mckee road last week. police say marlie who is a little under a year also hurt her right paw. she was taken in by san jose animal care and services for emergency animal care and is recovering. silicon valley crime stoppers

is offering $1,000 reward for anyone with information leading to arrest and conviction. crews rush to contain a fire at a downtown restaurant on fourth street and the 101 over pass. the fire appeared at the burning at the taqueria san jose. no one was hurt. classes are in session atom door valley high school hours before a fire broke out on campus. it started around late last night. it was contained to a small gym which was about 100 years old. you see the flames scorched the walls and parts of the roof in the gym. no word on how it started. to weather, a live look outside across the bay area. another beautiful day on tap. let's check with your first alert meteorologist jessica burch. we were off to a cloudy cool start this morning. into this afternoon as daytime highs start to rise, we are going to get rid of the clouds and there

will be a mix of sun and partly cloudy skies at times into the santa clara valley where we are hitting the 70s today like yesterday and the day before. along 101 into san francisco or even red wood city, it is a little bit cooler compared to yesterday. we will continue to see a daytime high set up of cooler weather into the next days. match that with wet conditions around the corner, we have rain in the forecast into friday, saturday, sunday. but we have plenty days ahead of that. it will stay dry into tuesday and wednesday with a mix of sun and clouds in the forecast as we wait for the system offshore to start forming. that will bring a series of showers into our friday forecast, saturday forecast, and that's what's going to kick off early next week too with an inch of rain on average throughout the bay area. race for the white house rhetoric heats up on the campaign trail. former president trump is clarifying controversial comments. president biden is looking to

a scary scene in iceland where a volcano erupted sending smoke and fiery ash in the sky. hundreds were forced to evacuate including americans visiting a popular tourist

spot. officials declared a state of emergency. those are sirens blaring at the iceland world famous blue lagoon resort over the weekend. lava flows slowed yesterday as man made barriers appeared to help keep lava from engulfing the town. officials say this fourth eruption since december was most powerful. so far, in injuries are reported. over the last month strong winds paired with heavy snow formed a 40-foot deep crevice at the popular ski resort sierra tahoe. the ski resort says it formed after a lack of trees on the mountain in 2021. caldor fire burned off thousands that acted as natural wind barriers. it closed part of the mountain while crews worked to fill the crack. >> it's the first time i have ever seen anything like that.

avalanche blasting, different approaches to trying to push the snow into the areas and create a ridge to keep people out. >> i am happy to know this place is generally safe. that's why we are here. i am not worried about anything. >> part of the mountain is closed even though the 40-foot gap has been filled. back to our first alert weather. a live look outside, it's a little hazy as we look at san francisco bay and alcatraz. it was cool and cloudy for many of us in the bay area. but that cloud layer pulls back like a blanket along our coastline into there afternoon. we are just left with a mix of sun and clouds today with light winds into the evening hours tonight. speaking of this evening that's when the blanket returns giving us a splash of showers along our coast and cloudy conditions to wake up tomorrow morning. it will repeat into tomorrow afternoon with sunny skies in the distance. we'll see that this week. really it's not until friday, saturday, sunday

where we see a pivot in the forecast. rain chances start to increase for the end of the week. here is the system that's bringing cooler weather for us and rainy skies around the corner. it's still developing. we can see it in models. all the way to wednesday, it is offshore starting to circulate into pacific northwest. in the bay area too we will get splashed with the same system. it's an area of low pressure acting as a cold front. we will see cool, gusty, wet conditions that this weekend and early next week. that's the system bringing snow to the sierra too. in the bay, how much are we expecting? we are still far out but it is worth noting long range models are showing a half inch of rain into our saturday forecast and we'll add to that into sunday and monday, closer to an inch near ukiah, a quarter inch all the way into pockets of the east bay and santa clara

valley. we are not there yet. that's in the next seven days. today feels similar to yesterday at least in the east bay or north bay. we are hitting the 70s this afternoon. yesterday we saw 70s in the peninsula but today it is a little bit cooler. upper 60s near red wood city today, we will potentially see upper 50s this weekend. it will be beautiful near san jose. that was our live look earlier this morning behind me. we saw partly cloudy skies in the santa clara valley. upper 60s into wednesday, low 60s this weekend once the cold front sweeps through like a windshield wiper. we notice a similar trend along the bay and inland areas. it will be a beautiful forecast for many of us in the bay area throughout the next days. take advantage of this dry weather before the rain returns in the bay. a local author in the south bay hopes her latest novel

helps provide more positive female characters. she tells our shawn chitnis she wants more representation in books. >> reporter: kyla has quite the story, born and raised in singapore, came to stanford to get her undergrad and masters. while surrounded by silicon valley she decided to start working in the tech industry. that's the setting for her novel with her main character showing a similar background. even as a published author who has already written more than one book, it's still weird for kyla to read her own words. there is pride in the stories she's telling. for an audience kyla believes needs more like them. >> i was living by myself. i was homesick and lonely and really frustrated with the rising racism going on at the

time. >> reporter: she had taken a job as a data analyst. a few months into the career path she was flying home for christmas in singapore unsure what she would be able to share about her new life. >> i typed the first line, zoe was having an absolute blast. that is the image i try to portray about myself to the people around me. >> reporter: she wasn't being honest and neither would her main character in the new novel valley verified. >> zoe was having an absolute blast. it was a balmy summer evening. >> reporter: her main character decides to give up the life in new york working in the fashion industry for a job with an app start up in silicon valley. it's her second novel. the first was about characters in her home country. >> i wanted to see asians like myself portrayed in a more

positive manner as the start of something fun, vibrant, joyful instead of labeled as villains. >> reporter: it is fiction but her characters are based on many people she's come across in real life. kyla isn't afraid to take on serious challenges of the tech industry including how women are seen and treated. >> she does not feel the sense of belonging. every step of the way she feels it is an uphill battle. odds are stacked against her. no one believes she belongs there. as a result she starts to believe she does not belong. >> reporter: as well as the fashion of the bay area which comes up in this passage as zoe heads to california. >> you are going to be the best thing that's happened to silicon valley. promise me you will never lose your style and become part of the patagonia group. you are a prada girl through and through. >> kyla hopes others enjoy reading this story as much as she did writing it. she says

where they're going to the ncaa men's college basketball tournament, where they were seeded. no real surprise which teams got top spots. uconn, houston, perdue, north carolina securing the number one seeds in their portion of the bracket. but the team we are focusing on is rooted in the bay area, number five in the western region. that's st. mary's. they'll go against the number 12 seed grand canyon university on friday in spokane, washington. st. mary's has made three straight ncaa tournaments for the first time in program history and one of the seniors joined matt lively. >> super excited. it's hard to boil it down to one emotion. just super proud of the guys and excited to get started. >> the bay is also being represented in women's ncaa tournament. stanford is number two and portland regional will host 15 seeded norfolk state at
