1/2 months this year 15 camaro thefts. in los angeles the problem is even more prevalent. around this time last year lapd reported seven camaros stolen. this year 90 so far. lapd sergeant arnold castellanos tells our team police often find many of these stolen camaros at illegal street takeovers or the thieves try and resell the camaros. >> quite often find them where they're actually turning around posting them on social media to sell them, 40, 50, $60,000 car selling for $3,000. >> many consumers have heard of the increase in key fob cloning and the thefts of other kinds of vehicles. >> carmen balber is the executive director of consumer watchdog, a group dedicated to safeguarding interests and rights of california consumers. >> we have seen this problem with other cars impact consumers' ability to get auto insurance. >> she says insurance

companies, however, can't just increase prices overnight. >> they have to go to the insurance commissioner, prove that these thefts have, in fact, caused increased losses and get approval for any increase in prices. >> castellano's advice to camaro owners. >> install some kind of kill switch and install a second type of gps tracker, even other products such as lojack or onstar. those are actually really good products that help us find the vehicles. >> balber says this should be a wake-up call to manufacturers as well. >> we can tell individual consumers oh, there's a flaw with your car. these are ways to get around and try and protect your car from being stolen, but what we need is action higher up at the manufacturer level to make sure that it isn't so easy to clone those fobs to begin with. >> it's not just the big cities in california that are keeping an eye out on this. the city of rohnert park recently warned the community there to be aware of this issue. >> car thefts have been an

ongoing problem here in the bay area. last year in oakland the city had a record number of car thefts, almost 15,000, about 40 stolen cars per day. so far cars are being stolen at a slower rate this year, 2,400 to this point, not as many as the same time in 2023. in san francisco there have been about 1,100 car thefts to date, about the same as last year. a fire broke out at a century old gym at a high school in the east bay. our chopper was over amador valley high in pleasanton. the fire left gaping holes in the roof of that building. classes were in session today at the school. school officials say the fire started last night and was contained to the small gym. >> we were grateful that the local fire authorities responded very quickly to a fire that was centralized in our small gymnasium, which is about 100 years old. >> no word how that fire started. just a heartless crime in san jose, police need your help

finding two suspects accused of shooting a puppy. this is marley. she's a german shepherd just 1 year old. marley is recovering after being shot in the head. this happened near anne darling drive and mckee road last week. marley somehow got outside while her owner was sleeping and was shot. the bullet entered her skull and exited through her jaw line. >> she's doing wonderfully and again being sweet, mellow and just a little fun loving puppy, as any 11-month-old puppy should be, and again considering the circumstances that she went through with so much trauma, she is just, you know, a superhero dog. >> marley also hurt her right paw. the silicon valley crime stoppers are now offering a $1,000 reward to anyone with information leading to an arrest and conviction of those involved. united airlines reaching out to customers after a rough couple of weeks. who could forget when that tire fell off the plane leaving sfo? there also have been hydraulic issues

on a flight from sfo to mexico city and in their message to flyers united says they are adding training for pilots and maintenance staff. they also said they are working with their suppliers, but didn't specify if that referred to boeing. according to the company's website, united operates 4,500 flights every day to 300 cities on five continents, including 200 u.s. cities. youtube creators now will have to label videos made using artificial intelligence as online safety experts raised the alarms a.i.-generated conflict could confuse and mislead users across the web, especially ahead of the elections. there's a new checklist users must go through when uploading a video now. it will ask if the video makes a person say or do something they did not do, alters footage of a real place, real event or depicts a scene that did not actually occur. youtube said creators could face consequences if they repeatedly fail to add to the disclosure. the supreme court heard

arguments today over misinformation on social media. the case tests how far the federal government can go in pressuring social media companies to remove content it believes spreads misinformation. skyler henry has the story. >> washington, d.c., make some noise for free speech. >> reporter: groups who say their voices have been silenced by the government rallied outside the supreme court monday as the justices heard arguments about whether the biden administration went too far combating controversial posts on social media. >> the 1st amendment had it been heeded during the pandemic helped save lives and i hope the court does the right thing by restoring the 1st amendment. >> reporter: the case, murphy versus missouri, rose out of efforts during the early months of the biden administration to push social media platforms to take down posts officials said express falsehoods about the pandemic and the 2020 election with federal courts ruling federal employees could not coerce or significantly

encourage a platform's content moderation decisions. >> government can't just run rampant pressuring platforms to censure private speech. >> reporter: some appeared skeptical to the biden administration's actions. >> what do you do with the fact the platforms say no all the time to the government? >> your honor, it doesn't matter. >> reporter: attorneys for the biden administration argue the federal officials' actions amounted to persuasion, not coercion. >> government speech crosses the line into coercion only if viewed objectively it conveys a threat of adverse government action and because no threats happened here, the court should reverse. >> reporter: a decision on the case is expected in june. >> the court also heard arguments today in a free speech dispute from the national rifle association. still ahead here at 5:00, it's a healthcare first where women can now buy birth control online. and the recent worldwide outbreak that

welcome back. birth control pills are now available to buy online. healthcare experts say this marks a major milestone and access to contraception in the united states. michael yoshida reports. >> reporter: for the first time in u.s. history online orders have begun for over the counter birth control pills. there are no age restrictions and no prescription necessary. >> i think it's a win for everybody. it allows improved access to contraceptive care to women. it is also i think financially very doable. >> reporter: perego, the company behind the pill, said one-month packs will be sold at the suggested price of 19.99. opill is 98% effective preventing pregnancy when taken at the same time every day.

most hormonal birth control pills contain both progestin and estrogen which for some shouldn't be used by smokers over 35 and other side effects, but opill only uses progestin to prevent pregnancy. >> for some people opill is probably safe who shouldn't take estrogen. >> reporter: the list for people who shouldn't take progestin is very short including those taking certain medications. >> i think we're seeing improved access because it's been around for so long and know it's very safe. >> reporter: following the online launch, opill is expected to hit shelves later this month at major retailers and pharmacies, including walgreens and cvs. >> the company says orders will be fulfilled in a day or two sent in plain unbranded boxes for customer privacy. president biden has signed a new executive order to support women's health research. the white house says

the order will prioritize women's health across federal agencies. that includes looking at gaps in federal funding when it comes to health issues that impact women, such as menopause, arthritis, and heart disease. the cdc is warning about a global uptick in measles, calling on doctors to encourage vaccinations, especially for kids traveling internationally. so far this year there have been 58 cases in 17 jurisdictions, california, arizona, florida and pennsylvania among the states where measles have been reported. coming up, a.i. could soon help you cross the street, where they are getting ready to test some smart crosswalks. straight ahead in sports, the 49ers have landed a new quarterback and why it makes jauan jennings happy. the warriors are at home tonight, klay thompson in the mix. this coming off the bench role has ignited the team.

southbound 280, even bigger mess for commuting drivers. our chopper just flew over the highway. this is near sandhill road off ramp in the palo alto area. you can see that truck right there. >> yeah. it looks like a trailer hauling debris on the back of the truck flipped over, the trailer part, dumping a big mess of wood chips and other debris on the road. that's really slowing people down. drivers are funneled through one lane, the height of commute hour. they'll have to wait till this gets cleaned up for things to improve. >> definitely a monday today. everything is flashier in las vegas and soon that will include how people cross the street. the city just got $1.4 million to install a.i. crosswalks. >> they will go along fremont street. the a.i. will detect both cars and pedestrian traffic to determine how much time is needed to cross the street. in her request for funding, las vegas' congresswoman said current crosswalks are on timers and aren't always long enough.

let's check in with first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen, hoping he's back from the matrix. >> back from the shadow realm. >> you did a great job reporting from the matrix, well done. >> see if the little remote works this time. >> if not, we know you can handle anything life throws at you. >> we'll find out. let's look at what's happening weatherwise and talk about really nice weather today, some fog this morning, backed up to the coast. we've seen plenty of sunshine since. the sam pattern will repeat itself over the next few days, morning fog, afternoon sunshine. the fog will be widespread, pretty dense to start each morning. we'll be dry through thursday and the wet weather pattern returns beginning friday and then continuing through the weekend. it will snap our streak of dry weekends at one. here's a look outside now from salesforce tower. temperatures today topped out with a wide variety, the microclimates back in full effect, upper 50s for half moon bay, 60 in san

francisco, almost 70 in fremont, 75 degrees for a high today in livermore. the fog is going to be widespread as we begin the day tuesday. visibility is reduced across pretty much the entire bay area and it's going to take a little while for the fog to retreat out of the inland valleys to the coast. futurecast indicates reduced visibility even in the neighborhood of santa rosa past 10:00 in the morning until almost noon, but by the time lunchtime rolls around, most of the fog should have retreated to the coast and plenty of sunshine the rest of the day, mid- to upper 40s to around 50 degrees to begin the day on tuesday and then highs tomorrow still above average inland. let's look at the forecast highs for tuesday, up into the low 70s in san jose, even mid-70s around morgan hill, one of the warmer spots at 74 degrees, low to mid-70s inland east bay, but closer to the coast 58 in half moon bay for a high temperature, 56 degrees in

san francisco, temperatures in north bay, the effect of the fog hanging on longer in the north bay valleys instead of low to mid-70s, the upper 60s to around 70 degrees which still isn't bad for the middle of march. let's look ahead a little farther down the line with our side by side forecast models tracking the next chance of range. the two forecast models agree a good chance of rain moves in friday. the differences are in the specific teaming. the american forecast model holds that off until late day while the european forecast model brings widespread rain across the bay area beginning by midday friday. they agree there's a good chance of lingering showers throughout much of the day saturday and they agree there's a chance of showers both sunday and again on monday. where they diverge is how much additional rainfall. it is the beginning of a generally wet stretch of weather that will likely carry us through the six to ten-day outlook and through the end of the month, a good chance of wetter than normal conditions

through late march into the beginning of april. let's look at the seven-day forecast. the first day of spring tomorrow, spring officially arriving just after 8:00 in the evening and it will feel like springtime inland with low 70s through thursday and once the wet weather arrives, temperatures drop off, low 60s for the first weekend of springtime. that's saturday, sunday, and monday. let's look at temperatures around the bay which aren't going to be as warm the next couple days, but still pleasant as we head through midweek and into thursday with a gradual increase in cloud cover. it's a good chance of rain for everybody friday into saturday, but total amounts are going to be modest with this next rainmaker, generally a quarter inch in the low end to maybe just over an inch of total rain once we add it up over the course of four straight days of decent rain chances. we'll look at the seven-day rainfall forecast outlook coming up at 6:00, give you an early look what to expect heading into the weekend. >> thanks, paul. time for a check of what's ahead at 6:00. we switch over to juliette. >> thank you. we're continuing to follow a vigil happening

this hour for the family killed in this weekend's tragic crash at the san francisco bus stop. we'll have another live report from the scene with what we've learned about the victims and charges the driver could face. plus it's become a symbol of oakland's crime problem, but today city leaders say things are looking up on the troubled hegenberger corridor, the strategies they say are making a difference. that's coming up at 6:00. first let's go to vern and sports. >> we got the nba up top and the warriors back home tonight hosting the knicks with 16 games left in the regular season. they're trending up for the playoffs, but these are the games you just got to win to zero in on positioning. currently tied for ninth in the conference, they would like to be in the top six. if they're going to make some noise, they have to continue to count on klay thompson. most of his career a starter, his move to the bench hasn't let it affect his play. thompson has averaged 20 points per game, four more than when he was as a starter.
