on asbestos monday. the new regulation prohibits the last remaining form of the carcinogen still in use. it comes more than 30 years after efforts to ban it began. asbestos is linked to 40,000 u.s. deaths a year and is banned in more than 50 countries. online sales began monday for the first over-the-counter birth control pill in the united states. opill was approved by the fda last year. it's expected to be available on store shelves within weeks. and country singer toby keith will be posthumously inducted into the country music hall of fame. keith died from stomach cancer in february at the age of 62. for more, download the cbs news app on your cell phone or connected tv. i'm shanelle kaul, cbs news, new it's tuesday, march 19th, 2024.

this is "cbs news mornings." immigration battle. the u.s. supreme court again blocks a controversial law in texas that allows local law enforcement to arrest migrants. reaction from governor abbott. new backlash against donald trump. the former president makes incendiary comments accusing you usual americans who vote for democrats of hating their religion and israel. and new drama in georgia's election interference case against trump. why the trial could face more delays. captioning funded by cbs good morning and good to be good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the u.s. supreme court weighing in on immigration enforcement. the court once again temporarily blocked texas from enforcing a sweeping law that would allow police in the state to arrest migrants suspected of being in the u.s. illegally. so-called sb-4 was set to take effect this month.

jarred hill has a closer look at the decision, and, of course, the reaction. good morning, jarred. >> good morning, anne-marie. it briefly raised a question whether texas's immigration law could go into effect. but the bottom line here is decision says sb-4 will likely not take effect, at least not likely any time soon. texas' sweeping immigration law on hold yet again by the high court. justice samuel alito extended the pause. it would let state and local law enforcement stop local migrants of entering the u.s. illegally. tate judges would be able to order migrants back across the southern border. the department of justice argues it's unconstitutional, overstepping federal immigration law. >> texas very simply is enforcing the laws that are the policy of the united states congress. >> texas governor greg abbott defended sb-4 in a recent

interview with "60 minutes." >> i have the authority to control any ingress or egress in the state of texas. >> last night he posted on social media that, quote, texas is still using its authority to arrest illegal immigrants for criminal trespass and other violations of law. as the legal battle continues in the courts, some local law enforcement officials are concerned they're not equipped to carry out the law. >> we're not immigration officers. we have to get trained to make sure that we are following the rule of the law. >> cbs news has reached out to several texas law enforcement agencies who said they're hoping to get state guidance and training in the event the law is allowed to take effect. there's no time line or when or if the supreme court would pick this back up, but the case is still working its way through lower courts as we speak, anne-marie. >> jarred hill in new york. thank you. presidential candidate donald trump is facing backlash

for incendiary claims that the democratic party hates israel and jewish democrats hate their religion. trump made his remarks during an online interview yesterday durdwith radio host sebastian gorka. response to a question about senate majority leader chuck schumer's call last week for a new election in israel? any jewish person that votes for democrats hates their religion, they hate everything about israel, and they should be ashamed of themselves because israel will be destroyed. >> schumer called trump's remarks hateful rants. the an i defamation league says, quiet, accusing jewish people of hating their religion because they might vote for a democratic party is patently false. trump has failed to obtain a $454 million bond needed to cover the judgment against him while he appeals the ruling in his new york civil fraud case.

his team calling it a practical impossibility after he was unable to reach an agreement with more than 30 underwriting companies. if he can't secure the bond in the next week, new york attorney general letitia james could freeze trump's bank accounts and seize his properties including trump tower. former president trump and some of his co-defendants are trying again to disqualify district attorney fani willis from the georgia election interference case. in court papers filed yesterday, trump and several co-confidents asked fulton county superior court judge scott mcafee to grant a certificate of immediate review. that would allow the decision to allow willis to stay in the case to go before the court of appeals and further delay the case. and in a new report famine is headed to gaza. half of gaza's total

population could be headed to the brink of starvation. the dire warning comes as president biden and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu spoke for the first time in weeks yesterday. israel faces growing pressure over its military campaign against hamas and rafah. cbs's chris livesay reports from tel aviv. >> reporter: gunfire cracked at the al shifa hospital complex in northern gaza where thousands of palestinians are sheltering. among them, hamas militants. the costs of the war and humanitarian costs are drawing a wedge between israel and its ally, the united states. the prime minister benjamin netanyahu and presidet biden hadn't spoken for at least a month. >> on the call president biden asked the prime minister to send a team composed of military and humanitarian officials to washington in the coming days to hear u.s. concerns about israel's rafah planning. >> reporter: israel agreed to that request. this comes after senate majority leader chuck schumer called for

new elections here. now the israeli leader has shot back. >> i think schumer's statements are wholly inappropriate. i think we're not a banana republic. >> reporter: negotiations reconvened in doha with israel offering a six-week pause for 40 hostages. among those still in captivity, itay chen. hamas is holding his body as a bargaining chip, says his father. >> say, i give you a blank piece of paper. if you have a daughter, if you have a son, and i ask you, put a price on that piece of paper. what is that price? >> reporter: the u.s. confirms israel has killed hamas' number three military official marwan issa. international security adviser jake sullivan says justice will come for the others hiding in the tunnels. now to an important first

amendment case before the supreme court. the justices heard arguments yesterday in a challenge to the biden administration efforts to stop the spread of what it believes to be misinformation on social media. cbs's skyler henry reports from washington. >> d.c., make some noise for free speech. >> reporter: groups who say their voices have been silenced by the government rallied outside the supreme court monday as the justices heard arguments about whether the biden administration went too far combatting controversial posts on social media. >> the first amendment, had it been heeded would have saved lives, and i hope the court does the right thing by restoring the first amendment in this case. >> reporter: the case, murthy versus missouri, pushed social media platforms to take down posts that spread falsehoods about the pandemic and the 2020 election and that they could not coerce or significantly encourage a platform's

a a messy but fun celebration in greece. hundreds of people threw cooking flour on each other yesterday. it's part of an annual tradition dating back to the 19th century known as the flour war. it's believed to have evolved when greece was occupied by the ottoman empire. ottoman rulers prohibited events people would defy that and dance in the streets. revelers threw flour on each other on monday as part of that celebration. well, the last type of asbestos used in the u.s. is banning, and a mother who left her toddler alone for ten days who died has been sentenced. a merry who went on vacation for ten days pleaded guilty to aggravated murder. 32-year-old kristel candelario was sentenced to prison with no chance for parole.

r. kelly is appealed his conviction and 30-year prison sentence. yesterday his lawyer told a federal appeals court that lawyers improperly used a racketeering statute to shut down organized crime in charging r. kelly. they argued all kinds of legitimate groups could be called racketeering groups under the law. the judges did not issue a ruling. lawyers for armor hannah gutierrez-reed are challenging her conviction in the deadly shooting of a cinematographer of the "rust" movie set. they're asking the judge for a new trial and release her from jail where she's being held awaiting sentencing. lawyers argue the jurors were given confusing instructions that may have led to a non-unanimous verdict. gutierrez-reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter earlier this month. she faces up to 18 months in prison.
