high pressure sitting inland and keeping us dry and a new system sitting just offshore is going to bring us a series of showers actually heading into our weekend forecast. and that's our big weather headline as we wake up and head out the door today. just get prepared for what's to come right around the corner. it's going to be a rainy weekend ahead of us so if you want to get out there and do some fun outdoor activities just at the tulip gardens yesterday. the beautiful flowers are all out right now. take advantage of the week while it's still dry. this weekend a completely different picture on futurecast and that's coming up in just a bit. here's the clouds coming in later this afternoon and showers are going to stay north of us. and as we take a look at the daytime highs all throughout the bay area, heading into this afternoon, with that mix of sun and clouds, we're still topping off in the low 60s near san francisco. low 60s across the bay bridge which you can see perfectly behind me this morning. visibility not that bad at the bridge currently over into oakland sitting at 60 there and 70s in the east bay and 60s all the way down into redwood city with the similar trend in the santa clara valley as we had yesterday. this morning in the santa clara valley, as we wake up. we're

still waking up to the blanket of clouds and that's going to be the first area for it to dissipate as we head into the next couple of hours once the sun is up, we'll time that out perfectly as we get closer to the 7:00, 8:00 hour. but for now g, how are the road looking out there the morning? getting busy on this wednesday morning. jess. especially at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights are officially on and we're officially starting to see that backup for that commute into san francisco. now if you are traveling across 80 this morning, or getting ready to head out and get on the freeways, that's an area where we tend to see a lot of brake lights heading towards that area near the bay bridge. but adding to that, got a couple of headlines here. westbound 80 near ashby. there's a crash got you backed up all the way into richmond and also a crash as you get across the carquinez bridge. that's backing traffic up into vallejo. so a busy start to your commute across the east shore. reed? all right, let's stay on the road and more tough news from bay area roadways and what's really been a week of tragic traffic headlines. overnight police investigated a possible shooting on the westbound lanes of i-80 in richmond. this case all started

when a man rushed to the e. r. after saying somebody shot him when he was driving just after sunset. that prompted this, that you see here on the screen. a quick closure of westbound 80 and in fact california highway patrol officers scoured the area of mcbird looking for bullet casings. not a lot of details on the case just yet. now to the headline the broke hearts this week in san francisco's west portal neighborhood. we now know the names of the victims of a violent and deadly crash that killed three saturday and sent their lone surviving child to the critical condition unit of a local hospital. diego cardoso de oliveira and matilde pinto de oliveira the mother and father killed in the case. and their son, 1-year-old joaquin ramos pinto de oliveira also died. the only survivor that infant still in the hospital this morning. police say an suv speeding down the wrong side of the road in that neighborhood driven by 78-year-old mary fong lau hit the family while they

were going to the zoo to celebrate their lives. lau is in the hospital charged with vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving. by the way her attorney gave us this statement saying she and her family mourn the loss of life and vow cooperation with the investigation. so the community conversation about safety on our roads continues and so does action to make our streets safer. in fact, listen up a new sit law is going to put cameras in crash prone areas starting with san francisco. in fact dozens of cameras will go up to catch speeders. you are looking live at one location in the area of lincoln way and 27th avenue and in fact look at this map that shows 33 locations for the cameras in san francisco. all of the areas marked the red zones are speed prone areas and in fact, one of them fulton street near golden gate park. that's just one area that will get the cameras. in the wake of the tragedy our kenny choi spoke with safety advocates who really believe the cameras will

slow traffic and hopefully save lives. >> reporter: paul rivera, his wife and 2-year-old girl live on a busy corridor in the inner richmond. >> constantly we're just like watching cars because we're scared we're going to get hit. >> reporter: a few blocks away from them at the corner of fulton and arguello, a speeding car fatally struck a 72-year-old in january. residents say near misses are too common. >> my wife and i were crossing the street and then i had to jump in front of a car so we wouldn't get hit. >> reporter: safety advocates witnessed three previous attempts to pass legislation fail at the state level. marta lindsey of walk san francisco often checks speeding cars. >> every mile a driver goes above 25 miles an hour, the risk for pedestrians just -- goes up so much. >> reporter: unlike the 13 red light cameras in san francisco which can take photos of drivers, the new speed cameras will only be able to identify license plates. in a 30-mile-per-hour zone, like on fulton, cameras would initiate

fines for only cars going 11 miles over the limit. >> 40 miles an hour, a person gets hit, we are so vulnerable. 75% chance that you are not going to survive that crash or you are going to be very severely injured. >> reporter: the san francisco municipal transportation agency will determine the 33 locations, including near schools, senior centers, and at locations on the high injury network, the 12% of city streets that account for nearly 70% of serious injuries and fatalities. cities like new york have been deploying more than 2500 speed cameras for about a decade. >> there have been really some amazing results in the other cities that have used speed cameras. and we've been advocating over and over to try to get them and we're really, really glad we finally have the chance. even if it's just in the limited pilot program, just for the five year period. >> reporter: sfmta is working together with san jose and oakland officials. those are the two other bay area cities allowed to install speed cameras under ab-645. >> i think any kind of

enforcement along with traffic calming measures and just increased awareness for pedestrian safety will definitely help the community. >> reporter: paul rivera wants to see more than 33 speed cameras deployed. but it's a major win for now. >> so let's talk timeline. travel bostons? san francisco hope to see the cameras operational by early 2025. now to shawn chitnis. >> reporter: reed, good morning. well, women make up only about a third of the developers in the video game industry. so they're talking about it here at the gdc conference and coming up the work to make it more inclusive. gianna? and from women in gaming to the amazing women on thehardwood, are more people excited about the other ncaa tournament and nba legend tells you why he is.

american mayor. during his tenure, brown expanded the city budget and real estate development and even helped get the giants a new ballpark. and looking live at san francisco this week. we welcome all of those coming in to town for the gaming industry to our city for the 2024 game developers conference. >> yeah, reed, more than 30,000 people are expected to attend the event. and a growing portion will be women and our shawn chitnis is live this morning at the moscone center. a point of pride this women's history month to see so many women making history in gaming. shawn? >> reporter: hey reed and gianna, good morning, yeah, so this conference gdc has been here all week and really are getting ready to ramp things up and we are starting to see that here in the early hours. and one part of the conference that will be happening later this week is a discussion on diversity and highlighting the contributions of women from all over the world. so we have the chance to talk to one of them who is helping to lead that discussion and she shared why it's so important to make sure that the video gaming industry

is inclusive. >> i have been playing video games ever since i remember. >> reporter: laia bee loves video games and has made a career out of it. she's attending the game developers conference this week in san francisco to help highlight the work done by women just like her in the industry all over the world. >> it wasn't until i was a teenager that i actually realized that it was seen as something male dominated. or when i went to the first video game store of my neighborhood, i was the only girl there. >> reporter: today she's the co-founder and ceo of an independent video game studio in uruguay and even in 2024, there aren't many women like her in this industry. a survey of developers this year shows that more than two-thirds are men. laia says that number only increases outside of the u.s. and she estimates that only about 3% to 5% have leadership roles like her. >> it's really important for women to feel they're making video games to create a cultural impact for other

women. >> reporter: but while only a third of developers are women, laia says they make up about half of the people playing video games. >> it's important that women are well represented and they actually look and talk like real women. >> reporter: she's also president of the uruguay game developers association and works to get more women in the industry throughout latin america. >> we used to have like very little representation. and sometimes it was oversexualized so it was -- made like to be in the male gaze instead of something that actually represents us. >> reporter: and as a woman running a video game studio, laia can have a direct impact on the characters we see in games. and how we play them, including this one she helped create. >> we don't ask you what your gender is. you can just choose how the way you want to be perceived. and, for example, the girl in the tutorial is not a damsel in distress. she's actually helping you and these

small little things, i think that will change the perception of how people see video games and how they perceive the world. >> reporter: and that's the progress that keeps her going. excited to see more women in gaming reaching new levels of the industry. >> video games actually have the power to change the world in the way we perceive it. so yes, i think that it's super important. and that's what keeps me here. >> reporter: and so that discussion about diversity that's going to happen tomorrow will bring together women from all over the world. asia, africa and latin america all represented in one session. and laia tells us the work she does to get more women involved in the industry goes beyond just this event. also giving out scholarships so they can include women who may otherwise not be a part of this industry and get to pursue this career path. reed and gianna, back to you. >> i have an assignment for you. please ask these women in gaming how i can get my daughter to not hold her finger up while she's playing a game. telling me just wait a second i got to do this last move. laughter ] need some parenting advice there. >> yes for sure. taking a live look outside on this wednesday morning. check it out. walnut creek you are good-looking there as we await the sunrise at 6:16 on this first day of spring. >> hey jess, how's that weather going to look today? >> beautiful, just how we like it on the first full day of spring here in the bay area. you know, i actually it's very similar to yesterday. the -- equinox happened late last night and well, not superlate but around 8:00 last night so the sun was already down at that point but it's officially spring here in the bay area. as the sun rises season the next couple of hours a mix of sun and clouds in the forecast for us in the morning and afternoon. actually dense clouds start rolling in in the evening hours tonight and we're going to see some more pockets of showers stay just to the north of us not impacting our bay area just yet. it's really not until we head into our friday forecast where we see off shower showers forming and that's going to slowly move in

as we head into friday afternoon. and i'm going to time that out for you right now. here we go with the cold front moving in from offshore, we talked about this earlier. temperatures are going to drop a lot this weekend's forecast and see rain starting friday at 10:00 a.m. up in the north bay. around lunchtime all the way down into san francisco and around 2:00 down into the santa clara valley. and then the showers stay pretty consistent and we're going see more showers rolling in from offshore, and heading into our saturday forecast and our sunday forecast and monday as we head into next week. so we're keeping a close eye on on the showers heading into early next week. and total we can see close to around an inch of rain accumulate into next monday's forecast. all the way up into yucaipa. close to an inch in santa rosa and san francisco. and over a half inch all the way down into the santa clara valley. but we're not the only ones impacted by this storm. heading up into the sierra, we go, close to around 20 inches of snow accumulate anywhere from twin bridges all the way down into kirkwood just into the sunday forecast alone. so lots of changes right around the corner. it's going to be a wet weekend for us here in the bay but just showers for the most part. this is not an

atmospheric river event. we're not seeing heavy washouts by the any means. just light drizzle move in and out of the communities all throughout this weekend and lasting into early next week. the daytime highs in the 60s once again in areas like redwood city and 60s into fremont and 70s in livermore and san jose. i'm going to drop this real fast and show you the next seven days because once that cold front moves through, we take those 70s and replace them with 50s by saturday. it will be a cool one for us heading into the weekend forecast and average out in the low 60s heading into early next week with the cloudy wet conditions still sticking around. jess, thank you. taking a look at the roadways right now. getting ready to take any of the bay area bridges, not bad. if you are heading across the golden gate bridge, bay bridge though a little crowded and the carquinez bridge though. that's actually one of the headlines right now as we take a look at the map here. westbound 80 right before thecarquinez bridge. there's a crash and it's got at least one lane blocked. and looking at that backup, it's into vallejo at this point. so a busy ride coming off of westbound 80 this morning. if you are commuting say out of

fairfield and working your way west of there heading into vallejo. certainly going to come up on the brake lights pretty quickly. so just keep that in mind. and looks like if you are headed eastbound, there's some spectator slowing also. lot of looky-loo traffic in the opposite direction. i want to zoom out though and show you one other hotspot. middle of the screen there. the icon. that's southbound 8808 nearhayward there's a crash near the 92 connector and traffic is slow from there as you head into union city. who's feeling luck and i? because the mega millions jackpot just keeps getting bigger and bigger, reed. >> yeah, you know, i always wake up to this news and i hate this line. because we always hope that we'll say there's a winner but no winning ticket last night. there's an upside though. mega millions now really puts the mega in mega. up to almost a billion dollars. $977 million. >> wow. >> that makes the next draw the sixth highest in the game's history. so even though nobody won the big prize, check your ticket this morning. because you might hold a smaller wind. 24, 46, 49, 62, 66 and megaball

we're just a week and a day away before baseball season begins. friday, march 28th. that's coming up. the giants will start the season on the road against the san diego padres. logan webb will take the mound for the first game and a week later on april 5th, it flips around and the giants will have their home opener at oracle against the padres. speaking of san diego, former padres' ace blake snell there he is was in the giants dugout last night in the spring training game and he is officially with the orange and black after passing the physical. two year, $62 million deal and can opt out after the 2024 season. now the lefty was lights-out in his second cy young winning season last year with san diego. posting a 2.25

>> just a sprinkle. >> yeah, no, the equinox actually happened at 8:00 p.m. last night so we actually were in winter most of yesterday. even though we were saying defendant the first dieoff spring which i guess isn't wrong. but today is the first full day of spring. and as we wake up this morning and head out the door, it's still a little bit cloudy and cool. we have that blanket of clouds and you can barely make out by hind me down into the santa clara valley with the beautiful sunrise just above the mountains. as we wake up this morning a very similar forecast to yesterday. cool and cloudy conditions in the morning hours and averaging out in the 60s and 70s today for the daytime highs throughout most temperature bay area and we're going to get it one more day of that as we head into the forecast tomorrow too. as high pressure sitting on shore and a system sitting offshore is actually bringing in some showers right around the corner and ending this dry break that we've been experiencing for the past couple of days. now showers are going to return into friday's forecast. but we're just seeing a mix of sun and clouds for us this morning heading into this afternoon. so it's actually take a look at that on futurecast. not a lot of activity to report. really. the blanket of clouds moving in later in the evening hours tonight and showers stay to the north of us for the time being

as we head into our thursday forecast. and really not until friday as we advance the clock on futurecast where we start seeing lot more active weather right around the corner for us. and what's happening actually is a cold front is moving its way in from offshore. here we go all the way into our friday forecast. see that cold front starting build in? that's going to bring in a series of showers for us starting friday morning and into the 10:00 hour up into the north bay. around lunchtime all the way into san francisco. and with that we're going to see cooler weather and daytime highs from the 70s all the way down into the 50s even for our inland areas and some gustier conditions associated with that too. and we'll see on and off showers throughout this weekend's forecast. i'll tell you more about that coming up in a bit. for now over to you, g. thank you, jess. let's talk about the freeways right now. because they are getting busy this morning. look at all those brake lights and all the people making that drive over into san francisco this morning. via the bay bridge. yeah, pretty backed up there as you head through there. give yourself a few extra minutes as you work your way. all right, taking a look at the maps right now and you can see the ride over to the bay bridge is a little slow as well especially

westbound 80 near ashby. where there was a crash. but busy there and still pretty busy as you come off the carquinez bridge. the eastshore freeway commute this morning is a bit difficult. well, police have identified the driver who caused a deadly wrong-way crash on interstate 580 in oakland. one person was killed and three others were injured. we first brought you this story as breaking news yesterday morning. it happened right on the macarthur maze right around 4:30. police say the driver, 34-year-old patrick sheckles and his passenger 56-year-old andre alberti were trying to escape officers after burglarizing a smoke shop in el cerrito. the theft was caught on camera. amanda hari gives us a look. >> this was just like a whole nother level. >> reporter: shocking video shows the moment two suspects backed a white truck into the front of the tobacco outlet in el cerrito, destroying the facade and thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. the suspects then spent about three minutes filling up their bags.

>> on a game show just grab bag they could and running out you know. it was like fun and games for them. >> reporter: the owner, omar, didn't want to show his face on camera. fearing for his safety. he says his phone started ringing around 4:20 tuesday morning. police quickly responded and the situation escalated. the suspects jumped back in their pickup truck and took off. el cerrito police chased them on to westbound i-80. after the i-80 merge with westbound i-580, police say the suspects abruptly changed directions and began driving the wrong way. police disengaged and chp took over. chp says the wrong-way vehicle hit two other cars. the two suspects and another driver have major injuries. the driver of a bmw was killed in the crash. omar says while this loss to his business is bad, it's nothing compared to the innocent loss of life. >> this gentleman was on his way to work and, you know, just -- out of nowhere. it was --

that was it. it ended for him, you know. he thought he was going to have a good day and go home and see his family. but no, these scum bags decided no, it's not going to happen today. >> reporter: products from omar's smoke shop littered the highway. he says this is the sixth major break-in in the last five years and he can't even get insurance. >> our business isn't covered by insurance. insurance companies dropped us because of -- instances like this. so -- anything that happens, it's -- it's going out of our pockets. >> reporter: john stashik with the el cerrito chamber of commerce stopped to look at the damage. he says situations like this are becoming too common. >> businesses are very, very concerned about doing business here. but this is -- we're still better and safer than other cities. we have -- a police force almost fully staffed. and we have our new license plate reader cameras around town. and we're on it, fast. >> reporter: omar plans to rebuild. but he can't help but be frustrated.

>> i'm angry. i'm angry at them. i'm angry at people like them. thinking that they're above the law. >> well, the shop owners wanted to put up metal or cement posts to prevent crimes like this one but the landlord won't let them. bullets fly at pleasant hill and police have a manhunt. the evidence is body of a monoshot and killed and another man in the hospital fighting for his life. witnesses at twin bridge circle off long brook way say they heard a series of pops just before noon and saw a car speed out of the apartment complex. well, you can see right there what happened. emergency personnel rushing the survivor there in an ambulance to the hospital. we'll watch this case closely for you because we really don't have a lot of information from police at this hour. other than them telling us that the one man who survived is fighting for his life with life-threatening injuries. to campbell now where a

it's one of many causes the artist supports. >> reporter: trieu hai dao has been a san jose landscaper for most of his adult life. he has mowed lawns and trimmed bushes and designed outdoor landscapes for his clients. but since the age of 6, he's had a passion for painting. and in the evenings when the landscaping tools are put away, he comes into his own studio and takes up the brush and the canvas. >> time to enjoy the lie, the arc, the thing i always -- >> reporter: dao fled his native vietnam in 1986 and survived a dangerous boat trip to hong kong. he arrived in the united states penniless. >> we are reborn from the ocean. >> reporter: he took up landscaping, married and raised four children, but never gave up his art. his paintings now fill up books and some of his paintings sell for thousands of dollars which he often gives

back to the community. dao has held shows that benefited ukraine, florida hurricane victims, and maui fire survivors, all causes he identifies with. but his latest show and fundraiser was inspired by the suffering of just one person. cathy ton nu and dao share the same small hometown in vietnam and they fled the country separately, but found each other by coincidence in san jose and formed a friendship. cathy is a breast cancer survivor, enduring years of treatments. her younger sister died from the disease. >> i have mammogram every six months. six months when i find out just six months i find out -- the breast cancer and after that, we have one year for treatment. >> reporter: although breast cancer rates are declining in white non-hispanic american women, they are increasing in vietnamese american women who are also behind the national average when it comes to breast

cancer screening. >> it's all about how do we engage the community to improve prevention. >> reporter: dao's upcoming show in april will benefit the valley health foundation's efforts to increase screenings in santa clara county and upgrade technology. >> if we can prevent cancer, that really makes the biggest impact. >> and when my friend, when the people, cancer, feel better, feel less hurt, and at the same time, i think i feel very good too. >> reporter: dao's contribution may be a small piece of a larger effort. but he says he wants to give back to the country and community which took him in when he had nothing. >> i lucky. i still alive. and i come to the freedom country. and i have the good family right now. i can take care of my family and then i need to do something to -- to help people.

something like that to be honest though and i have no shame in it either. a quick look at what's going on outside on this beautiful first full day of spring. yesterday was the spring equinox just around 8:00 p.m. and now we're waking up to the first sunrise of official spring right around the corner. as we wake up near the black mountain cam. actually seeing -- that's the san jose cam overlooking that beautiful sunrise as we wake up this morning and a little bit of cloud coverage right behind the oakland hills and you can see that next to the bay bridge. gosh, it's such a gorgeous morning for us here in the bay and i want to dive into the weather headlines because there's some big changes right around the corner for us hiding into the next couple of days. start off with the fact there's still some areas of fog this morning in the north bay. a mix of sun and clouds for us today and rain returns to the bay area friday and that's going linger as we head into the weekend forecast. now friday, saturday and sunday, it's not huge washout events by any means but it's worth noting that we are expecting some drizzle in the forecast especially as we head into early next week. now timing this out, it's hard to believe when we've been dealing with such a beautiful dry break for

quite some time. but the showers are staying north of us for the time being and take a while until the cold front actually starts moving in from offshore and as it does that a lot of changes in the forecast. not only rain but gustier conditions with the same system building in from offshore, we're also going to be seeing a lot cooler temperatures as we head into early next week too. for example, today we're sitting in the 70s and we'll see upper 50s and a lot of the inland areas once the system moves in friday heading into saturday. now that's going to bring in showers all throughout friday afternoon throughout the bay area. and we'll see a repeat of that as we head into the next couple of days in total the next couple of days following friday. in total, it's not even going to amount to an inch though in areas like san jose stretching up into santa rosa but boy it gets close next monday's forecast. the same system will impact the sierra too but more impressive. in the sierra we go. 20 inches from donner all the wow down into twin bridges and kirkwood. that system will linger monday too. so just saying it's going to be a pretty impressive snow

system up there right around the corner and hey no skiers are complaining about that by any means. here's the daytime highs today. a mix of sun and clouds for us heading into this afternoon like i mentioned and hit the 60s in areas like oakland and san francisco and 70s into livermore and the cold front moves in and that's coming up in just a bit. a lot different right around the corner. jessica thank you. headed to the bay bridge this morning. business as usual. with the brake lights building and in fact, lots of company. lots of people making that ride over into san francisco this morning. you can see it's backed up beyond that overpass and so to the foot of the maze pretty safe to say at this point. no crashes to slow you down so that will certainly help. kind of the usual stuff heading into san francisco this morning. taking a peek here at our overview map. we're seeing the usual spots starting to slow down just a little bit. as things sort of bottleneck from the 880 castro valley y and 580 and 238 getting over to the san mateo bridge. there's a crash in the area making it slow through there. slow westbound 80 tracking brake lights due to

the earlier spot near ashby and still seeing aslow ride from earlier accident for folks heading to the carquinez bridge. a bit of a busy ride out of valet low this morning. but other than that south bay commuters good morning to you out of san jose, so far, so good on 101. well, let's take a live look at sfo this morning. jetblue is eliminating a number of unprofitable routes and it's exiting five cities al together. and that includes los angeles to san francisco flight. that in the u.s., the company is pulling out of kansas city, missouri, and newburg, new york. internationally, jetblue will not be traveling in bogota, colombia, quito, ecuador and lima, peru. a federal judge blocked the company's planned merger with spirit airlines. jetblue said reducing routes will lower delays and free up aircraft to fly more profitable routes. ♪ ♪

♪ ♪ all finished with the clinic. a cheerful celebration for this little girl hitting a major milestone this week. a rhode island community turned out to send off 5-year-old amelia bernard as she got her final chemotherapy treatment. this little one has been battling leukemia for more than two years and on her last day of treatment, she went to the hospital in style and look at that. a motorcade of police and firefighters and people who love her took her to the final appointment and even got a visit from the local mayor. >> finally like there was a light at the end of the tunnel. i don't think any of us could have done this without the
