israel-hamas war was censored. >> i at no, ma'am preaching hate at all about the jewish community at all. >> for a high school student, it is a teachable moment. and st. mary's is officially on the road to the big dance. how the men's basketball team was sent off in style for the first round of march madness. it is really cool to see our team representing our school out there. >> it's fun to be a part of it. you know, you just get caught up in being a part of it. talk about edge of your seat. the race to represent silicon valley in congress is now down to one vote. i've never seen that. it really could come down to somebody's forgotten signature on their ballot. so we just got an update in the district 16 race to replace congresswoman anna eshoo. a fight for second place. you can see it there. he

is now leading joseph joe mitt yan. and we will show you what's happening behind the scene to sort out this extremely tight race. >> reporter: the last ballots will be counted in these elections that were sent in to the registrar of voters where the signatures didn't match or they were missing a signature. they make up about 1% of the total votes that were cast. but in this election, they will decide who will go on to the november runoff. >> reporter: election workers are hand loading so-called ballots for those voters to be counted and to help decide who moves on in the congressional

16 race joe is samidion. challenge front runner sam lynette sam liccardo. >> reporter: the registrar is required to contact the voters and the attempt to verify the signature. the same thing is happening, which will make up a part of the district. >> joe simitian sent us a statement saying sometimes it takes a while for them to work.

that means counting, verifying all of the votes, every single one of them. by law the registrar has until april 4 to count all the ballots and certify the results. >> and then there is this information. the losing candidate will have a chance to request a recount that they would then have to pay for. the secretary of state will certify the election results on april 12. let's get to some breaking news. more election breaking news. the associated press just announcing in the last few minutes. prop one has passed. the measure backed by governor newsom would allow the state to borrow more than $6 billion to build thousands of housing units and add mental health treatment beds. you can see how close the results were. they were separated by fractions of a percent. newsom tweeting out this is a huge victory for tackling homelessness in the state. saying it is the biggest chance california has seen and the biggest change the state has seen in decades. and that now it is time to get to work.

repairing decades of broken promises and neglect. onto pleasant hill. a second person has died at a condo complex. one of the gunmen in the attack died in the hospital from injuries. we are also learning this all started when thieves tried to rob a delivery driver. 63-year-old peter popovich was driving off and dropping off packages and materials to cannabis distributers on twin bridge circle when at least two suspects targeted him. police say both sides exchanged fire. popovich and one of the suspects, 21-year-old davis were both killed. police say the other suspect then took off. they are still searching for that person. investigators say popovich had a concealed carry permit and used his own gun during the shootout. and this is a disturbing scene in san jose. police see a

a is a lookat the suspect. there he is. 35-year-old louie juarez jr. who was booked into jail. the ca when officers searched the suspect's home, they also found 25 firearms including an assault rifle. high-capacity magazines, and other micro cameras. onto the attentions of the israel-hamas war. they put a

new focus on the issue of free speech in college campuses. today they delayed voting on a controversial policy that would limit political statements on university websites. >> distribution and that -- >> you are welcome to observe the meeting, but please republican the members of the public body and other members are here to observe the meeting. we will have police officers clear the room. >> the regions called a recess as protesters continued to disrupt the meeting. the proposal would ban academic departments from expressing opinions on university home pages such as a recent statement on the uc santa cruz race and ethics department side that called israel's continued, excuse me, genocidal. it comes on the same day that jewish lawmakers aimed at protecting the right to free speech at public colleges and universities in california. it

would require campuses to update their code of conduct to ban violence, harassment, intimidation, and discrimination that interferes with free speech. and it comes after more than 100 pro-palestinian demonstrators shut down the talk by the israeli speaker, back in february by breaking down the door of uc berkeley's play house. he offered this bill and said it is to address the growing safety concerns from both jewish and muslim students since the war started. >> we know that tensions are high following the october 7 attack. even in these difficult circumstances. all students should be able to freely express themselves without threat or intimidation. especially on college campuses. >> and so if passed, it is not clear how the measure would be enforced, but the senator says the legislature could withhold funding from schools that don't comply. you know, we are seeing similar tensions at the high

school level. an oakland student says her school censored her. criticizing israel's military response in gaza. as kenny choi shows us as they try to address the conflict in the classroom. >> reporter: an article she wrote was removed. >> and i'm being silenced and censored. they printed and distributed the january edition. complaints highlighting the death toll in gaza to the holocaust that got the attention of schools and the district officials. >> i don't see it as anti-somatic at all. i'm not preaching any hate in my article about the jewish community at all. >> reporter: kyle melton e-mailed the schools, demanding they will be taken down immediately. he cited one of the lines, stating, the ongoing

killing rate suggest that the death toll could rpass that of the holocaust. >> and i think that it will be intentionally it. and they censored it. >> the article's opening line, credittizing israel as the par tide state. >> and because of this hateful rhetoric, it's a common place for public discourse in being triflized by the rest of the world. >> acknowledging the par diet remains critical. and confused about their decision. >> with the lack of communication that the school had because they did not give me a specific reason on why they wanted to take my article down other than that and it was a concern of my safety. >> and the unified school district declined interview requests. choosing to send this statement that reads we will

always support our students first amendment rights and the safety of our school's community is paramount. they wanted a more detailed explanation of the district, saying that there is no response when they would ask for a meeting to discuss the decision. >> reporter: they agree a meeting. >> and for a high school student, it is a teachable moment where they will be there to lead a more peaceful discourse. >> people don't want to see the history behind it. >> reporter: they believe their words are critical of the reason why the article was erased. she is still waiting to hear why. >> reporter: the family obtained by the principal. because the article is posted on the technical high school sponsored platform, the school, staff, students, they can be

welcome back, we are just a day away from the official start of march madness. the round of 64 on the men's ncaa college basketball tournament will start tomorrow. the women will get underway on friday. and our home team, well, it's on the road. our chopper was overhead as the st. mary's gaels boarded the bus to spokane to take on grand canyon university. kelsi thorud was there with the fans to send them off. >> well, st. mary's at men's basketball team, they couldn't leave campus without one final sendoff celebration with fans ahead of their first round

tournament game this friday. they couldn't be more excited. with cheers chanting, the pom pom waving, even some friends wishing their best men's basketball fans, they did what they could to send off the team >> i think it is really cool and especially since we have such a small community. and it is really cool to see our team representing our schools out there. >> reporter: the die hard fans from across the community came out to wish the team luck. and his son, james, they were able to make it over after james got out of school early. they told me that they have gone to almost every home game this season together. and they cannot wait to see how the team does in the tournament. >> they might not have a big lead. but definitely can play.

>> reporter: and donna was also on she even went to the conference championship game in las vegas and will be heading up to spokane right after the team to etcher them on in person this friday. >> it is fun to be a part of it. you know, you just get caught up in being a part of it. and you get to know the players. >> both the players and the head coach, randy bennett, they will say the support from fans this season has been absolutely amazing. >> just knowing that support is there behind us. it is our motive, you know? and obviously that we would play for one another and we also play for the area that everybody is behind us. >> and you just don't get this many times in life, so you better enjoy it. >> and many of these fans, they told us that they are hoping to go up to spokane for the game. they are expecting a huge presence of st. mary's fans up there and many of them told me they are hoping that the team does well enough that they will

playing. >> no, not this year. they are not playing and his team is not playing. and her team is not playing. and mine is. >> well, good for you. >> oregon is. >> yes, it just means that i'm bias. i'm not sure if it will be off, but we will find that out together. late tonight the dry weather will continue for another 36 hours or so and the rain will arrive on friday in the north baby late to mid-morning in the afternoon and it will be an unsettled cool weekend overall. and to 67 degrees for livermore and concord and drop down to the 40s for the most part. mid to upper 40s to around 50 degrees,

pretty close to what's normal for this time of the year. that layer of high clouds, not very efficient at holding a lot of worth near the ground level. then temperatures tomorrow, they are going to warm back up to a few degrees above average inland. a look at our forecast highs, but the maps, they are onto the screen here, so you could get a sense of where you are. and low 60s on half moon bay. and maybe around 70 degrees for the warmest spots. but the clouds will thicken up a little faster than other parts of the bay area to keep your temperatures a little cooler in your other inland locations. and your forecast tomorrow, one more dry day for kahlua to enjoy, even though she does not look pleased. it will be cool in the city with the highs reaching the low 60s.

but wear your pups out tomorrow before the rain arrives friday. probably lingering into saturday, which at least she will wash the pollen out of the atmosphere and the good news. glass half full. dropping down to the low end of the spectrum on the pollen count on saturday. that's as good as they would get here in late march, but doesn't take more than a little break in the showers for them to creep back in on sunday. and so futurecast over the next couple of days will show the increase in cloud cover by late tomorrow. but there's the rain hanging off the coast. that does make tear way into the north bay. by mid to late morning on friday and then pushing across the rest of the bay area as we would head into the afternoon and evening. light to moderate rain. some occasion fallly heavier downpours that are not going to last long enough at any particular spot that will lead to flooding potential. the brief break, more showers are in that forecast off and on saturday, it won't rain all the time, but be flexible with any outdoor plans. we have continuing rain chances, lower rain chances, but they are not zero on sunday and monday. and something looks like the drier half of the weekend and should be dry on tuesday and another

chance for rain will be heading our way on tuesday night into wednesday of next week. but just focusing on the rain chances over the next few days, all the way through the weekend. we are talking about generally half an inch of total rainfall. a little less as you would go further and a little bit more in the santa cruz mountains. pretty much the pattern we would expect. the winter storm watch that's in effect from 11:00 a.m. on friday, which is kind of early. i don't think the snow will start piling up. but they will continue through early sunday morning. about 5,000 feet, so travel will be a concern on u.s. 50 and on i-80. a look at your seven-day forecast. again, we have a wet first half of the weekend and it is still an unsettled second half of the weekend now that we're halfway through the workweek to start to focus more and more on the weekend forecast as we would had ed into next week, still unsettled. but should be mostly dry by tuesday with that next chance for rain, looming in the forecast on wednesday. and the other impact of the rain is that it will be accompanied by cooler temperatures. everybody drops down to at least a few

willie brown dominated politics for decades. the former speaker of the assembly celebrated a milestone. his 90th birthday. look at that. roughly 300 people showed up to toast brown at city hall including the former coworker from sacramento and the city. they sent a video tape greeting and their extended family that also showed up. >> i am blown away by the collection of all these people that will stretch the entire
