accomplice accused of staging a brazen and violent escape by ambushing correction officers. airlifted to safety. u.s. chartered helicopters begin flying americans out of haiti as gangs launch new attacks near the capital city. and high-flying scare. a hot-air balloon gets blown off course and into a power line. see how it ends. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the urgent manhunt in idaho for a white supremacist gang member and an armed accomplice still on the run. these are the men police are looking for. investigators say the convicted felon escaped custody with the help of an accomplice in a brazen attack that ended with three officers shot. danya bacchus has the latest on the search. prisoner, white male adult, shirtless, skylar meade. had a driver who was a shooter. >> reporter: an alert from police in idaho as this boise hospital went into lockdown early wednesday morning.

on the run convicted felon skylar meade and an armed accomplice identified by police late wednesday as nicholas umpenour. >> we believe that this was a coordinated attack, ambush on the department of corrections officers and certainly a planned endeavor to free him from custody. >> reporter: investigators say meade had been rushed to saint alphonsus regional medical center in boise after he was found injuring himself. as he and correction officers were leaving, investigators say umpenour opened fire hitting two officers. a third officer was accidentally shot by a boise police officer who arrived on the scene. police say the men then sped off in a gray sedan. >> they are dangerous. they are armed, and they have shown a propensity for violence. >> reporter: court records show 31-year-old meade, a white supremacist gang member, had been serving time for aggravated battery against law enforcement, grand theft, and other felonies. he's been behind bars since 2016.

>> we are searching as quickly as we can following every lead we can to try and get these folks into custody again as quickly as possible. >> reporter: until then, the community remains on high alert. the wounded officers are expected to recover. danya bacchus, cbs news. with the situation in haiti deteriorating, the u.s. is working overtime to get some 1,600 americans back on u.s. soil. one group arriving back in florida last night on a plane chattered by the florida department of emergency management. cbs' jarred hill is joining us from here in new york with their story. >> reporter: this is -- this was a heartbreaking couple of weeks for this family. just for context, a lot of the violence and the unrest we've seen is happening around the capital of port-au-prince. these evacuations are happening about 120 miles north of that in the city of cap-hatien. officials say just getting between the two has been a big part of this challenge. >> we're finally reunited with

julian, our 2-year-old son. >> reporter: it's been a long two weeks for philippe armand trying to get his son and more than a dozen family members back on u.s. soil amid the turmoil in haiti. >> everyone made it safe and sound. >> reporter: their flight from haiti to florida one of a handful planned and coordinated by florida emergency management officials. >> we're committed to rescuing floridians from the situation. it's a bad situation. >> reporter: the u.s. state department says well over 1,000 americans have expressed interest in leaving haiti as chaos continues. yesterday armed gangs launched a new round of attacks near the capital port-au-prince leaving bodies in the streets. turmoil began in haiti earlier this month after a mass prison outbreak. the prime minister announced his resignation last week and is currently under u.s. protection. haiti officials are working on creating a transitional government. the u.s. diplomatic security service posted video of dozens of americans boarding a chartered helicopter in haiti yesterday, flown to the

dominican republic capital of santo domingo. >> the situation on the ground is one of the biggest factors into determining the frequency at which we can do this. >> reporter: the state department says demand and the reliability of commercial transportation will also determine how often it can operate flights to get as many americans out of haiti as they can. now while the u.s. government does have officials in santo domingo providing some services to evacuated americans, they say that it's up to those individuals to figure out a way back here to the u.s. >> all right. jarred hill in new york, thank you. a new law in texas that would allow state officials to arrest migrants suspected of entering the u.s. illegally is still on hold this morning. a federal appeals court did not issue a ruling yesterday after holding a hearing on the law. the appeals court stopped it from going into effect in order to listen to arguments, and that decision came hours after the u.s. supreme court said the law could temporarily begin. donald trump's legal wranglings and cash crush is coming to a head.

time is running out for the former president to find the money to appeal his civil fraud case in new york. here's cbs' nikole killion. >> reporter: former president donald trump is under increasing financial pressure. some of his prized properties like trump tower and 40 wall street up for possible seizure if he can't pay the $464 million bond by next monday. >> have some of greatest assets in the world. this is a rigged trial. >> reporter: his lawyers claim more than 30 insurance companies rejected his bond bids. but the office of letitia james dismissed the argument that he can't find the money saying there is nothing unusual about even billion-dollar judgments being fully bonded. james spoke to abc news -- >> if he does not have funds to pay off the judgment, then we will seek judgment enforcement mechanisms in court. and we will ask the judge to seize his assets.

>> reporter: to meet the monday deadline, trump likely needs over $500 million in collateral for the bond, but he's claimed to have only between $350 million and $400 million in cash with the rest of his wealth tied up in property and other assets. >> so it would be up to her, anything she tries to seize he can then try to defend against. but basically he needs to put up the bond within a few days or else be pretty much at her mercy. >> reporter: with his real estate empire at risk, trump asked one million supporters by email and text to chip in as attorney alina habba said james' office is playing politics. >> it is intentionally to interfere in the election, to hurt president trump, to try and ruin his company. >> reporter: and in a separate development, trump's attorneys are hailing a decision by a georgia judge allowing them to amend a ruling last week to keep district attorney fani willis on the 2020 election interference case.

some legal experts say the appeal could result in yet another delay, making it unlikely this case could go to trial before the election. nikole killion, cbs news, washington. the head of the republican-led house impeachment inquiry into president biden says he plans to invite biden to testify. during a hearing yesterday, congressman james comer said the president was either, quote, complicit or incompetent, in his son hunter's business dealings. lawmakers listened to testimony from a former business associate of hunter biden and a former associate of donald trump who tried to uncover evidence of wrongdoing by the biden family in ukraine. >> it is clear to me that joe biden was the brand being sold by the -- by the biden family. >> in nearly a year traveling the world and interviewing officials i found precisely zero evidence of the bidens' corruption in ukraine. >> after a months' long investigation, republicans have not presented any evidence of

wrongdoing by the president. and now to the middle east where secretary of state antony blinken is working to broker a cease-fire and hostage release deal. blinken arrived in cairo this morning where he's meeting with officials from six arab nations. the secretary travels to israel tomorrow. and cbs news has confirmed the u.s. would cut off funding for unwra, the main u.n. agency that provides aid to palestinians in gaza under a spending bill being negotiated by congress expect the white house. the biden administration halted funding to unwra in january after israel accused 12 staffers of taking part in the october 7th massacre. turning to the weather and the calendar may say spring, but millions across the north will be seeing snow. a winter storm moving out of western canada will spread flakes across the upper midwest today and tomorrow. it will create a messy friday morning commute in milwaukee and detroit. some places from southern wisconsin to central michigan could see more than six inches

georgia executed a man for the 1993 kidnapping, rape, and murder of his former girlfriend. 59-year-old willie pye was put to death by lethal injection. he was convicted in 1996 and spent nearly three decades on death row. it was georgia's first execution in more than four years. pye's final appeals were denied by the u.s. supreme court. the "austin american the "austin american statesman" says an investigation into the death of the sister-in-law of senator mitch mcconnell was released. the blanco county, texas, sheriff's office says shipping company ceo angela chao was drunk when she inadvertently drove her tesla into a pond last month and drowned. authorities called her death an unfortunate accident. it happened after she was having dinner with friends at a ranch about 40 miles west of austin. and "the birmingham news" says alabama governor kay ivey signed into law a bill banning diversity, equity, and inclusion problems at public schools,
