whether they're responsible for two killings during their day on the run. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. folks in idaho can breathe a sigh of relief this morning now that two armed and dangerous white supremacist gang members are behind bars. this after a brazen hospital escape that ended with three corrections officers shot. the two were arrested in twin falls yesterday about 125 miles southeast of boise. police believe the two escaped first heading about 250 miles north where they dumped their getaway car. they're also investigating whether the two are linked to a pair of murders in different counties. cbs' jarred hill is following the latest on this story and joins us here in new york this morning. hey, jarred, good morning. >> reporter: police say they found shackles actually at the scene of one of those two killings, and that there are other possible signs of evidence

linking them to meade and umphenour. authorities believe that they worked together to orchestrate this escape. >> skyler meade and nicholas umphenour are in custody. >> reporter: an escaped convict and his alleged accomplice are back behind bars this morning in idaho, ending a manhunt that stretched for a day and a half. >> there was a short vehicle pursuit, and both suspects were taken into custody separately. there were no shots fired or extensive use of force in this operation. >> reporter: skyler meade and nicholas umphenour arrested more than 100 miles from the boise hospital where police say umphenour shot two corrections officers. while on the run police suspect the pair were possibly involved in the killings of two men in separate counties. meade and umphenour found driving a car that belonged to one of those victims. this all started overnight wednesday when police say umphenour shot corrections officers as they were escorting skyler meade back to prison after meade had been taken to the hospital and treated for self-inflicted injuries. the director of idaho's

department of corrections described the injured officers' reactions when they learned the two were captured. >> safe to say their spirits were lifted. >> reporter: meade and umphenour are known members of the aryan knights prison gang, a white supremacist group formed in idaho's corrections system in the '90s. the department of corrections says at one point they were both in prison together. >> they also shared some acquaintances, common aquaintances both in custody as well as in the community. >> reporter: authorities say it's not clear if the escape was sanctioned by the gang and if anybody else was involved. now authorities say meade was in solitary confinement, adding to the questions around how they planned the escape. both are due in court today and will likely face a series of new charges which could include murder. back to you. >> okay. jarred hill, thank you so much. spring snow is making travel difficult across parts of the midwest this morning, and there's a threat of flooding for tens of millions in the east.

snow is now moving across iowa, wisconsin, and michigan. some places could end up with more than half a foot on the ground by tonight. and a large rainstorm will soak the eastern u.s. it starts in the deep south later on today, then pushes into the northeast overnight into saturday. nearly 40 million people will be at risk of flooding along the i-95 corridor with up to four inches of rain. winds will also gust up to 50 miles per hour near the coast. and now to the middle east where high-level talks with -- are taking place today in qatar on a cease-fire and hostage release deal. cia chief william burns along with israel's spy chief will be there. secretary of state antony blinken who just arrived in israel says gaps are now narrowing in those negotiations. still, though, more work is needed. blinken is set to meet with prime minister benjamin netanyahu and his war cabinet today. meanwhile, back here in new

york, the united states is calling for a vote today on a revised and tougher u.n. resolution declaring an immediate and sustained cease-fire to protect civilians and enable humanitarian aid to be delivered. the resolution is notable because it doesn't directly tie the need for a cease-fire. there was a wild scene at the border in el paso, texas, yesterday. video taken by the "new york post" shows this -- a group of migrants pushing through a razor wire fence and knocking over texas national guard troops trying to hold them back. a texas law enforcement official says several hundred migrants made it through those barriers. in an exclusive interview with cbs news, border patrol chief jason owens said the u.s. needs tougher policies to deter illegal crossings. >> actually they're going to choose to come between the ports of entry. we need to take that off the table and make sure everybody's coming through the front door,

through the port of entry. >> texas governor greg abbott said authorities quickly regained control and reinforced the fence. at least one migrant was arrested for assaulting a national guard member. the new york attorney general took a step toward seizing a golf resort owned by former president donald trump in case he fails to come up with that court-ordered payment of more than $460 million in his civil fraud case by monday. while polls suggest the presidential race is close, as cbs' robert costa reports, the race for campaign cash is no contest. >> reporter: president biden touching down in houston as his campaign fundraising takes off. with three donor gatherings in two days, the democratic money machine is expected to bring in another $7 million, and biden is courting high-profile donors like billionaire businessman mark cuban. >> let's beat him again.

>> reporter: heading into march, biden's campaign had $71 million on hand, more than double the $33 million in trump's campaign account. and the president's affiliated political committees have outraised trump's network by double digits. >> there's only about six or seven states that are going to determine the outcome of this election. >> reporter: biden launched a $30 million ad campaign in key battleground states with plans to open more than 100 field offices. >> they'd like to take the cash so i can't use it on the campaign. >> reporter: trump has been forced to spend nearly $9 million on legal bills so far this year. that follows nearly $50 million last year. and the former president is now saying he can't secure the $464 million bond he needs to comply with the recent civil fraud ruling in new york, putting a long list of his prized properties at risk. >> i have some of the greatest assets in the world, and this is a rigged trial.

>> reporter: former federal prosecutor renato mariotti said it's possible trump didn't plan ahead for such a ruling in the state's favor or for such a staggering penalty. >> it's possible i suppose that he didn't plan for this at all. the other possibility is that he's not nearly as wealthy as he suggests that he is. >> reporter: trump lashed out at new york attorney general letitia james who filed the judgment from the trial in westchester county where his golf resort and seven springs estate are located. a sign that she may be planning to seize those assets. and in another development, manhattan district attorney alvin bragg pushed to have trump's criminal hush-money payments trial begin as soon as possible in mid-april. a development that could change the campaign forcing trump to sit in a courtroom for much of the spring. robert costa, cbs news, washington. still ahead this hour, the boston marathon bomber wants his death sentence thrown out. why his case is getting another look. and later, smartphone showdown. why apple is being sued by the

with a morning jolt of instant cooling sensation. it's comeback season. dzhokhar tsarnaev. the faa is warning of possible flight disruptions before, during, and after next month's eclipse. the agency is advising pilots to prepare for changes and higher than normal traffic volume which could cause delays at airports across the eclipse's path. the eclipse will cross north america including 13 states where people can watch the moon totally block the sun. alleged squatters are accused in a gruesome killing, and why the case remains open for the boston marathon bomber. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the boston herald" reports a federal appeals court ordered a judge to investigate claims of juror bias in the case of boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev. he was sentenced to death for his role in the 2013 bombing

that killed three people and injured hundreds more. his attorneys, though, want the death sentence thrown out. they claim two jurors showed bias in social media postings about the bombing during the death penalty phase. the appeals court sent the case back to the trial judge after determining the judge did not adequately investigate the claims of juror bias. cbs new york says two squatters are now suspected of killing a woman in her late mother's manhattan apartment. this according to police sources. authorities are now searching for two people they believe killed 52-year-old nadia vitels in the apartment which had been vacant for months. sources say she did not know the squatters were living there. police believe they returned to the apartment after she arrived, beat her to death, and then stuffed her body in a duffel bag. and "tulsa world" reports an oklahoma district attorney said charges are not warranted in the

in tim burton's "beetlejuice beetlejuice." the newly released trailer shows the return of actors michael keaton, catherine o'hara, and winona ryder who starred in the 1988 original horror comedy classic. the movie is set to hit theaters in september. well, there is a lot of the money up for grabs this weekend as two lottery jackpots are close to the billion dollar mark. tonight's mega millions drawing is estimated to be worth $977 million. the tenth largest jackpot in u.s. lottery history. and then tomorrow night, numbers will be drawn for the $750 million powerball jackpot. good luck if you're playing. the justice department is taking on apple, and another record-breaking day on wall street. here's carissa lawson with this morning's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: stocks soared to new heights for the second day in a row amid optimism from the federal reserve that it still plans to slash interest rates this year. want dow jumped 269 points.

the nasdaq rose 32, and the s&p 500 advanced 16 points. the u.s. justice department and more than a dozen states filed a blockbuster lawsuit against apple accusing the company of creating a monopoly in the smartphone market. the lawsuit alleges apple unfairly tries to keep users hooked on iphones and charges high fees to app developers costing consumers money. apple called the lawsuit wrong on the facts and the law and said it will vigorously defend against it. two important recalls. the first involves those roller ball candies. the consumer product safety commission is warning parents to stop buying them. the agency says the ball can dislodge and get trapped in a child's mouth. it's been linked to the death of a 7-year-old girl. and nestle usa is recalling nearly half a million of these metallic starbucks branded home mugs. the mugs can overheat and break in the microwave. some of the injuries reported include severe burns.

[ cheers ] >> oakland with the march memory of a lifetime. the ncaa men's basketball tournament has its first bracket buster. four team seeded oakland upset third-seeded kentucky last night 80-76. oakland's jack gohlke made ten three-pointers falling one short of the tournament record. oakland now advances to take on north carolina state on saturday. the 11th seeded wolf pack beat six seed texas tech 80-67. and the ncaa men's basketball tournament continues today at 12:15 eastern here on cbs. kensington palace says princess catherine is back at work, just not in the public eye. the palace confirming that the princess has been working from home.
