see those big changes feeling more like winter as we go through the next few days. so here's what you can expect. that first alert weather day, it's a cloudy start to our day. we are looking at that rain returning this afternoon and evening. the chance for some thunderstorms as well. later on today and for saturday. and it does look wet with scattered showers on saturday and the chance for some showers on sunday and much cooler, those temperatures really take a tumble as we look to the weekend. now i want to show you what you can expect as we take you through the day. so a dry start and there we go with the rain chances really picking up as we head through the afternoon and evening and it does look like a wet evening commute. just a big mess later on today with the rain. here we are in santa rosa with the rain returning especially a little bit earlier for you. with that rain returning in the -- for the north bay first and then pushing across the rest of the peninsula. so we are looking at what you can expect as we go through our day again for santa

rosa, looking at upper 50s and much cooler for you. around the bay 62 in san francisco and oakland and around the peninsula. 64 for the south bay that rain will arrive later for you and that's why before that rain hits, it's going to be a warm one and upper 60s in san jose. we'll talk more and time it out for you on futurecast when the rain will arrive where you live coming up and now let's check in with gianna for a look at traffic. hello, beautiful friends. oh, hello mary. so nice to have you in on this friday. what a treat for us. let's take a look at the roadways right now. it's a nice drive this morning. speaking of treats we're looking pretty good out there. if you are working your way out of marin county heading over into san francisco via the golden gate bridge. but again, that wet weather coming in. so if you are getting out and about today, think about giving yourself some extra time when it really starts hitting the roadways there but right now for the most part the golden gate bridge is a dry ride as you head into the city. reed? all right, well, tension this morning in san francisco over the sentencing of a man who pled guilty to attacking a woman. here's the back story on this one. 94-year-old on

fang taylor attacked by a man out on bail from a previous arrest in 2021. taylor was out for the daily walk when daniel cawitch stabbed her multiple times. she said why would anybody do this to me? fast forward to 2024. just sentenced to probation. today they will protest the sentencing on thesteps of hall of justice and they want stricter penalties for repeat offenders. that protest starts during our 8:00 a.m. broadcast on pix+ 44 cable 12. and we will be there. silicon valley based apple vows to fight a blockbuster antitrust lawsuit by the u.s. department of justice. so there's a lot to unpack on this suit but boiling it all down the feds say apple runs a monopoly with their iphone e cosystem at the expense of you the buyer. apple says the suit threatens innovation and sets a

dangerous precedent empowering government to influence the products. another government shutdown looms on capitol hill which would turn off the money washington spends to keep the country up and running. ahead of saturday's shutdown deadline, your elected representatives have a $1.2 trillion spending package to consider and one of the biggest items in that package is a boost in military spending which is something speaker mike johnson spent months negotiating. over five months. all right, get excited. it's a bike day ahead for us for college sports here in the bay. the st. mary's men's team and the stanford women's team will hit the hardwood in the ncaa tournament. and they're going to play at the same time. so maybe have you know, two screens ready to go. why don't we start with st. mary's? the men will play grand canyon in the first round tonight in familiar territory. the five seed will take on the antelopes in spokane, washington. home of st. mary's biggest rival, gonzaga. not a lot of support this week up there. >> it's great to finally be here and then have to think

dollars into the community. >> reporter: hey guys, good morning. yeah, it's so great to see that we can have all that attention and support coming to the north bay and here in santa rosa. and this is certainly a commitment for what people call a cult favorite. the line continues to grow at this hour. but there are some people who clearly showed up early. probably overnight. i'm going the step of it way so you can get a live look at the beginning of the line and mopefully you can make out that there are some people who have impressive setups. truly wanted to camp out here and they are getting i think a decent amount of sleep. i mean, it's not the worst conditions to be out here this morning. and overnight while they wait for the situation to change. and for the brewing company to open up, that's going to be at 11:00 a.m. still have got some time to go. let's talk about the drama. our max darrow talked to the team behind pie knee in

younger and he has the details on why there was a bit of a scare for this year's release. the 20th anniversary. >> reporter: each bottle that makes its way down the conveyor belt and gets stamped with this label will tell the story of ply knee the younger. and this year's brew has quite the story. >> this is a big -- big moment. >> reporter: which is why natalie smiled as she watched the bottling process unfold. her team at the russian river brewing company spends a ton of time preparing for the two week exclusive release of the triple ipa. and there was a moment in january where disaster almost struck. >> we did have a power outage during january, during the storms. >> reporter: it lasted for a few days. while it didn't affect the beer going into these bottles. >> we had just packaged our ply knee the younger for distribution. so we had a warehouse cold box full of

draft ply knee the younger and we were -- definitely stressing out about that. >> reporter: luckily, for ply knee's sake, she says they were able to get a generator and they installed a switch gear as well. >> we had -- we had not been able to get that generator, we may have -- we could have lost some younger. >> reporter: that would have been a big disappointment for ply knee enthusiasts and for russian river's bottom line. >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: alex miller says people can out to get their hands on this beer. >> a lot of times i'll be closing up here at 9:00 and there's already people in line camping out. i had people from australia and new zealand. >> reporter: over the two week period, they expect to see -- >> anywhere in around 12,000, 14,000. yeah, definitely a lot of people. >> reporter: for perspective that's about half the population of the entire town of windsor. as the bottles filled up natalie was busy tidying up the handout. the

label shows monitive sauce overapting. a nod to the roman history character. >> he was a well respected author. >> reporter: which started as creative way to drum up some much-needed business 20 years ago has turned into an integral part of russian river brewing's story. one natalie is quite proud of. >> you know, it's a really big year for us. and the beer tastings amazing so really happy about that. >> reporter: one that seems to be able to weather whatever comes its way. >> reporter: our thanks to max for putting together the awesome story. we understand there's again quite some time to wait but they all understand what they have signed up for. talking to someone at the end of the line who says usually once they open up you can get through the line in about 20 minutes. there's a limit to how much you can enjoy here at the brewery as well as how much you can take home. but clearly for the folks who are here well worth it and they are looking

what also is back? the rain. some big changes ahead. hopefully you have enjoyed the sunshine and the spring weather. because we are talking about kind of a weather shock here with weather feeling more like winter as we look to the next few days. and this is as we go through the next several days you can see the rain chances really picking up today and tomorrow and then again by the middle part of next week. so we're going to time it out for you. but first of all i want to show you the reason why. this is a low pressure system dropping a cold front our way. the rain and wind and also the chance for some thunderstorms as well. just enough instability in the atmosphere to fire off thunderstorms with the front later on today and then a better chance for your saturday as well. let's time it out for you on futurecast. the rain will arrive first for the north bay with this front. and as that cold front pushes across the rest of the bay area, then here comes the rain as well. so this is stopping the clock and you can see as we head through our afternoon, that rain moves

in. and by this evening, check it out. that line of heavy rain again could see some thunderstorms with it. this is at 6:30. so please be careful and it's going to be a mess for the evening commute with the widespread rain. and then that rain pushes in across the east bay and the south bay. as we head through tonight. take a look at saturday. as we are looking at that scattered activity. so still looking at some off and on showers and could see some thunderstorms with some heavy downpours and strong cells popping up as we look to your saturday. and then some chances for some showers on sunday. so as we go through friday, the rest of today, and through the weekend, we are looking at anywhere from a quarter to a half inch to three quarters of an inch of rain. so with this cold front in the actual low pressure system moving through. okay, now i want to show you those daytime highs. for today. as we are looking at that rain arriving again first for the north bay and it's going to be cooler for you. big difference upper

50s in santa rosa. around the bay, 62 in san francisco and for oakland. the peninsula, midsts later on this afternoon and upper 60s for you in fremont in the east bay and for the south bay with the rain arriving later for you. still mild in the upper 60s for san jose. i want to show you what you can expect for that 7 day forecast. as we are looking at a big cooldown with -- with the shower activity for our weekend. so inland, in the mid 60s. down to the upper 50s for tomorrow. you will feel that difference. looking at the shower chances saturday, the beginning of sunday. catching a break. monday, tuesday and then another system arrives for wednesday. more about this coming up and now let's check in with gianna for a look at traffic and at least this morning it's dry but a big difference as we look to later on this evening for that commute. yeah, and mary, that makes the biggest difference for commuters as they head out the door. so hopefully you won't have too many troubles on the roadway. the good news too is it's usually lighter conditions on a friday for the

commute. so right now, so far, so good. as we take a live look at one of the bay area bridges. the golden gate bridge. you can see it's moving along just fine for folks heading into san francisco this morning. not seeing a lot of brake lights or issues which is great news right now but again once it's slick out there be extra careful. across the peninsula 101 both directions maybe an early flight at sfo. so far, so good. taking a taxi things are moving along well through there. we have a trouble spot on highway 4 eastbound. but looks like it's in the clearing stages as you work your way over through pittsburg. reed? time right now 5:23 in the morning. man. i made you jump with your coffee right? the creative creature under threat and the big question, how do we protect the foxes

arctic foxes are in trouble. experts say they need to hunt rodents to survive long winters. and climate change is making their prey rare and harder to find. >> if we get warmer, warmer and more unstable climate, where you get snow melt and you get icing, on the ground, that's going to affect how well the rodents can survive. >> reporter: thousands of miles away in the bay area, stanford professor of biology elizabeth hadley, she cautions the arctic fox is not the only species under threat. >> absolutely not. the -- arctic fox is not the only species threatened by climate change and human activities. >> reporter: hadley study loss of biodiversity in a human dominated world and she explains how human activity and climate change are challenging the survival of many species around the world. >> extinction happens in a heartbeat. and evolution takes a very long time. so it's easier to kind of kill something than it is to allow

it to persist. so biodiversity is threatened in many ways by humanity. and the arctic foxes policemenly few those threats. >> reporter: back in the arctic norwegian scientists set up more than 30 feeding stations across the wilderness. it's believed without this food the fox would go extinction. >> we would see a decrease in the population sizes and that would be really detrimental. >> reporter: the international union for the conservation of nature reported how over 44,000 spy suppose are now threatened with extinction. dr. hadley believes we have a moral responsibility to consider what we could do to stem the loss. >> it requires major activities on the part of humanity. not just a single person. we can all do our share but it requires major, major action for us to consider what we can do to stem global change. >> reporter: including reducing greenhouse gases and preserving

as we look to this afternoon and by this evening. we're talking widespread rain with a cold front pushing through. and then for a weekend, it does turn wet. so looking at not just rain later on today, but scattered showers as we look to our saturday and possibly for sunday as well. the chance for some thunderstorms with this weather system and much cooler temperatures. we're talking into the 50s as we look to our weekend. so as we go through at least as we go through our day, the rain chances again picking up by this afternoon. and by this evening. all right, let's talk about our daytime highs temperatures as we are looking at that rain returning first for the north bay and then with it you will notice those cooler temperatures today. as we look to right around the bay, 62 in san francisco. also for oakland. the peninsula, 64. and for the south bay, the rain returns and arrives a little bit later for you. and so before the rain hits, it's going to be a mild day in the upper 60s for you in san jose. all right, let's check in with

gianna for a look at traffic. and are you ready for this rain? i know it's been a while. been so nice and to spring weather for so long. and now back to winter. i know, and it always makes a little hearder on the roadways, mary with the wet weather but you know i guess we're sort of getting used to it. a ebb and flow but look at the freeways right now. dry roadways and really no cars coming across the span right now. either friday light or they are wrapping up construction that sometimes happens right around that area out of sausalito as you head to the golden gate bridge. but i will check with chp because this is a little unusual. that we're not seeing really any cars work across the span. that's very, very quiet even for a friday. other than that, very -- good conditions for anyone making that ride along 880 as well as 101. it's time now for a look at this morning's top stories. the alameda county da is moving forward with murder charges against a robbery suspect in the death of his alleged accomplice. prosecutors say trayvon johnson was part of a

group of men who tried to rob an armored truck in east oakland in 2022. one of those men was killed when security guard opened fire. and prosecutors want to hold johnson accountable for that death. if convicted, he could face life in prison. a lafayette man is now identified as the person killed in a wrong-way crash on 580 in oakland earlier this week. police say 57-year-old lee david wiener was the driver who was hit and killed when the suspects from a smash and grab at an el cerrito tobacco store led police on a chase. just about the only thing everybody can agree on is that we don't agree on anything for a fix for homelessness. voters just green lit a very pricey plan to throw $6 billion at helping the unhoused. so while we wait to see the impact of that money, homelessness and mental illness and addiction issues in san francisco's tenderloin really are ground zero for that program. and foe people are out there working

hard the build bridges to help the tenderloin. itay hod reports on the story of a man determined to shine a light on the region's most precious commodity. its people. watch. >> reporter: while many photographerrers have documented the hardships of those living on the gritty streets of the tenderloin, amos gregory takes a different approach. actually inviting them into his studio. >> taking someone who's never had you know, the opportunity to have the lights in front of them. and within five minutes, you know, you have got this professional model that's posing for you. >> reporter: for the last couple of months, amos has photographed dozens of locals, hoping to capture the tender side of the tenderloin. for most of his subjects, this is the first time they've ever sat for a professional

portrait. >> smiles and expressions that you know, you didn't think they had in them. start to commute. ready? >> reporter: his goal is to refocus the neighborhood's narrative by showcasing the dignity and resilience of this often overlooked community. 54-year-old cory pounders lives in an alley just around the corner with his 2-year-old shar pei goldie. been homeless on and off for two decades and like many in the tenderloin his bed is the sidewalks. living on the streets he says has made him invisible to others but not today. >> it's nice to get a little attention you know? >> reporter: in addition to the pictures, amos also records two minute videos of his subjects telling their life stories. >> you see so much stuff on the streets man. you see so much poverty. >> reporter: the hope, amos says, is to eventually plaster these photos all over the neighborhood.

survey showed that spedding on them jumped 19% year to year and parents are feeling the squeeze with paying for these high priced brands. >> just like super basic because i feel like small is more. >> like many 13-year-olds these days, brenna cares a lot about her skin. wash, moisturize, then sunscreen. >> it's like super hydrating and stuff. >> guided by her mom kelly who knew the first step in her daughter's skin care routine was to make sure she was educated on the products, something she wished she knew when she was younger. >> the days of -- noxzema and, you know, st. i'ves. scrubs that we were told we needed to do or should do and then you find out later that putting -- broken shells on your face is probably not a good idea. >> some items can be usable. some trendy and some expensive. >> i think it's just kind of finding encouraging skin care and taking care of your skin but also making sure that it's not going to -- break the bank. >> with all the influencers out there, one of the greatest things that i feel so happy about is that our younger patients are getting passionate about skin care. >> dr. fan is the chair of dermatology for kaiser permanente who says for teens keep it simple. >> a gentle cleanser and good sunscreen and a gentle and light moisturizer is what i would recommend to my 'tweens. >> those seem like really good logical steps. to sort of even get them in the habit of obviously choosing healthier products i'm assuming and things that don't have a lot of additives or things in it. is that something you should look for as a parent when you are getting that first skin care brand for your kids? >> absolutely. and the reason

being is in our younger patients, their skin is still -- remains thin so they can be more sensitive compared to our adult patient population. >> she also says higher end serums and layering products should be used for more mature skin. >> it's going to be me because i need it more. >> brenna hopes that teens don't get too caught up in the influencer posts about beauty and pay attention what they put on the skin. >> i don't know why kids are using retinol to be honest. it doesn't make a lot of sense because like your skin is super -- like young and stuff. >> after all, beauty isn't just skin deep. it's also about finding the beauty within. >> usually just post like stuff about sunsets because i love sunsets and stuff. >> and the beauty in the world around us. >> well, dr. fan also says that diet and sleep have a lot to do with healthy skin and also says it's best to consult a doctor before buying any harsh products that might do more

harm than good. well we went to x with the question, what's the appropriate amount to spend on teen skin care products and check out the results. so 66.7% between 20 and $50 and just about 19% felt like $100 plus was reasonable. what they were thinking for that. it's a very expensive -- you know, thing to dive into with your teens especially when a lot of these kids are asking for this instead of toys and stuff for christmas presents. i will give brenna a lot of credit. she's been very level headed and again, cares more about like taking beautiful pictures and posting that on instagram like the sunset versus all the beauty videos. good start for her but not the case for everyone. >> if i had austria tex pad. just enough for me. >> stridex. i forgot act that. >> you didn't think about this as a kid and now our kids are thinking about it and spending money on it. >> the stuff we used was so

meanwhile, hello to you in berkeley this morning. your restaurant week also starts today. eat up everybody. why don't we take a live look outside on this friday morning and as we have said all week, the rain is on its way. the big question though on this first alert weather day, mary, is when exactly will the rain hit? and what areas? good morning to you. >> good morning, yeah. as we head through the afternoon, and this evening, that's when the rain returns. so kind of like that weather whiplash from spring weather. we just had the sunshine and warm temperatures. and then big changes with cooler weather for us and the return of the rain. so i want to show you as we go through the next several days we are looking at an active unsettled weather pattern for us. so here's the reason why. the first is a cold front. so this low pressure system will drop a cold front our way as we head through this afternoon and especially by this evening. widespread rain returns and we are looking at windy conditions as well. so you can see from the northern part of the state

that rain already making its way there. so let's time it out for you on futurecast. taking you hour-by-hour. the rain arrives first for the north bay with this cold front. and as that front moves across the rest of the bay area, watch as that rain moves in for b3:00 p.m. in and around the bay. for the evening commute you can see that line of heavy rain could see some thunderstorms with that cold front as well. just enough instability and as we head through tonight, that rain pushing in across the east bay as well as for the south bay. this is at 8:00 tonight. and then for saturday, we're looking at scattered showers and could see some thunderstorms as well for your saturday. just off and on showers and also as you look ahead to sunday morning could see some showers as well. so really looking at just that flip of that switch with cooler temperatures and that rain and as we look tofully -- rest of today and into our weekend, picking up anywhere from a
