judge as the country pauses for a national day of mourning. d-day for donald trump. the former president facing a half a billion dollar deadline today. will he pay up or risk having some prized properties seized? and spring snowstorm. march is roaring out like a lion with millions of americans under winter weather or blizzard alerts. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. crews are still searching this hour the damaged concert hall in the outskirts of moscow as family and friends wait for news on their loved ones. the death toll up to at least 137. four suspected gunman appeared in court to face terrorism charges. all of them showing signs of severe beatings with russian media reporting the men were tortured during interrogation. i.s.i.s. releasing purported vote of the attack and claimed

responsibility, but russian president vladimir putin is blaming ukraine. wendy gillette is following the latest on this story from here in new york and joins us now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the concert by the band picnic was just a few minutes from starting when four gunmen burst into the venue firing automatic weapons. at first some in the crowd thought it was fireworks, but quickly realized the building was under attack. over the weekend, four suspects accused of the deadliest attack in russia in two decades appeared in court. the men were bruised and one sat in a wheelchair with his eyes closed. it's unclear how they were injured. the court said three of them submitted guilty pleas. priests held a prayer service at a makeshift memorial outside crocus city hall that keeps growing as mourners leave flowers and stuffed animals. russian president vladimir putin lit a candle for the victims sunday as the country marked the national day of mourning. the islamic state released a video of of what is ted was the

[ speaking in a global language ] in an address to the nation, putin did not mentions i.s.i.s. and instead pointed the finger at ukraine saying the attackers were getting help across the border while trying to escape. >> vladimir putin is already trying to link this to ukraine and say that ukraine is responsible. does the u.s. have any evidence to back that up? >> no, there is no whatsoever any evidence and, in fact, what we know to be the case is that i.s.i.s.-k is responsible for what happened. >> reporter: ukraine also denied any involvement. the u.s. says it had warned russia about an imminent attack. >> we also know that i.s.i.s. is relying on its regional affiliates to attack its interests in the west. >> reporter: at the concert hall set on fire during the assault, crews are working to sift through the debris. more than 180 people were also hurt in the attack.

with the cash after being spurned by over 30 financial lenders. what about foreign money? >> well, that creates its own set of political issues as well as perhaps legal issues about the influence or potential influence of a foreign government. >> reporter: trump has asked the appeals court to pause the payment and accept a lesser bond of just $100 million for now. in an appeal to supporters for financial help, trump fires back warning the attorney general to, quote, keep your filthy hands off trump tower. but seizing trump's assets will not be an easy process. this could take weeks or even months. a large spring storm is bringing all kinds of nasty weather to us from the upper midwest all the way to the gulf coast. from colorado to michigan, nearly 12 million people are under winter storm or blizzard warnings. snow will persist longest in parts of the upper midwest where it will last through tuesday.

many places will end up with 6 to 12 inches of snow, and there could be localized higher amounts. in the deep south there's a threat of severe weather later today. thunderstorms with a risk of tornadoes and damaging winds will move through louisiana, arkansas, mississippi, and western alabama. israel's defense minister is heading to washington to meet there with top u.s. officials amid rising tensions between president biden and prime minister netanyahu over the war and the growing humanitarian crisis in gaza. meanwhile, there are now reports israel could release up to 800 palestinian prisoners including some convicted of murder in exchange for hamas freeing 40 hostages, women, children, the sick, and elderly, in a first phase of a six-week truce deal. no response yet from hamas on this, but the terror group has also been demanding a complete

withdrawal of israeli troops from gaza which israel has adamantly rejected. there are still more than 130 hostages in gaza. israel has confirmed more than 30 of them are dead. the faa is boosting oversight of united airlines following a stringed midair scares. that might mean the airline will have to put future plans on hold. elise preston has more. >> reporter: the enhanced faa scrutiny comes after a number of troubling incidents involving united planes in the past month, including one piece of the outer body that fell off this jet, an engine fire that left a trail of flames on another, and in wheel on r -- and this wheel after takeoff. >> what makes this one unusual is that this is happening with one of the largest, oldest, and most respected airlines in the country. >> reporter: in a letter sent to employees obtained by cbs news, the airline acknowledged the

upcoming action, "we will begin to see more of an faa presence in our operation as they begin to review some of our work processes, manuals, and facilities." earlier this month, in a letter to customers, united's ceo wrote the company is taking a closer look at safety measures, calling recent incidents unfortunate. the airline noted the launch of a centralized training curriculum for new hire maintenance technicians. should passengers be concerned? >> i don't think the traveling public needs to be concerned. the regulatory authority is going to make sure that united airlines is providing the safe service that the traveling public is entitled to. >> reporter: the last deadly airline crash was in 2009 when a colgan plane crashed into a home outside buffalo. since then there's been one death due to an airliner. elise preston, cbs news, los angeles. coming up, cruise ship trouble. a fire breaks out on the "freedom" once again.

(vo) visit mytepezza.com to find a ted eye specialist and to see bridget's before and after photos. welcome back. for the second time in less than two years, there's been a fire in the exhaust funnel on the carnival "freedom" cruise ship. this broke out on saturday while the ship was about 20 miles off the coast of bahamas. witnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike. no passengers were hurts. -- were hurt. two fire-fighting crew members were treated for smoke inhalation. the ship's next two scheduled sailings have been canceled, and the deaths of two crew members on holland america's "new amsterdam" cruise ship are also being investigated. the cruise line says they died friday in the bahamas during what it's calling an incident in the ship's engineering space. a deadly mountain lion

attack, and a pennsylvania girl is swept away in a creek. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the philadelphia enquirer" reports the search for a 6-year-old girl who fell into a pennsylvania creek is now a recovery operation. authorities say linaya brooker was playing with other children saturday night near the rain-swollen delaware county creek when she slipped and was swept away. crews used boats, helicopters, even a mini submarine to look for the missing girl. "the sacramento bee" says one brother was killed and another injured in a mountain lion attack in california. authorities say this happened saturday in a remote area of the el dorado national forest northeast of sacramento. a 21-year-old man was killed, and his 18-year-old brother was hurt and is expected to make a full recovery. the lion was tracked down and killed. it is believed to be the first deadly attack by a mountain lion

in the state in two decades. and "the austin american-statesman" says a school bus involved in a deadly crash did not have seatbelts. authorities say a concrete truck headed in the opposite direction veered into the bus' lane on friday just outside austin and crashed into it. a boy on the bus and a man in another vehicle were both killed. more than 50 others were injured. school officials say the bus did not have seatbelts because it was built before state law went into effect requiring them. still to come this hour, solar storm alert. why some communications could be disrupted today. alert. why some communications could be disrupted today.

have issued a geomagnetic storm watch that goes through next monday. they warn that an outburst of plasma from a solar floor or a large eruption of electromagnetic radiation from the sun could interfere with radio transmissions on earth. noaa's space weather prediction center in boulder, colorado, issued a statement saying there's no reason for the public to be concerned. princess catherine and her husband prince william say they are extremely moved by the response to her shocking cancer announcement. messages of support for kate have been pouring in from around the world. in a statement, kensington palace says william and kate are enormously touched and grateful for the understanding of their request for privacy at this time. los angeles dodgers star shohei ohtani plans to speak to the media today for the first time since his interpreter was fired. ippei mizuhara was fired by the team last week after reports surfaced about his purported ties to an alleged illegal bookmaker.

ohtani's attorneys accuse the interpreter of stealing more than $4 million from the japanese star to police illegal -- place illegal bets. an aboutface from a fast food chain with a change to its keep ingredients. here's matt pieper. >> reporter: stocks ended the week mixed despite registering the biggest weekly percentage gain of the year after the federal reserve stuck with projections for three interest rate cuts by year's end. the dow lost 305. nasdaq gained 26, s&p losing 7 points. a chicken change at chick-fil-a. the chain says it will no longer serve antibiotic-free chicken. it's backtracking from its decade-old no antibiotics ever pledge to embrace a standard known as no antibiotics important to human medicine. the policy begins now, and chick-fil-a says the reason is that the availability of high-quality chicken that meets its standards became a concern. panera bread recently switched.

here we are, we are now to the sweet 16 in the ncaa men's basketball tournament. yesterday number six seed clemson upset three seed baylor 72-64. the tournament's top overall seed, connecticut, jumped touts a 30-point lead and demolished northwestern 75-58. and another number-one seed, houston, got quite the scare from number nine seed texas a&m. they forced overtime here with a furious rally late in the second half. the cougars prevailed, eventually won 100-95. a 19-year-old figure skater from virginia took the world championships to new heights this weekend. take a look. illia malinin won his first world figuring skating title with a historic skate in canada. he landed an unprecedented 16 quadruple jumps in just one program including the first ever quad axel.
