probably and no matter how many times you see it, it doesn't seem to get any less shocking. it shows baltimore's francis scott key bridge crumbling into the river below, taking with it everything and everyone on it. it happened after a cargo ship lost power and rammed into a support column. tonight this is the closest look we've seen yet of the aftermath here. part of the bridge is laying on top of the dolly. there's a heap of shredded metal. this was ground zero for a desperate search for six construction workers who were on that bridge when it went down and who all disappeared into the water. tonight the u.s. coast guard had some upsetting news. >> based on the length of time that we've gone in this search, the extensive search efforts that we put into it, the water temperature that at this point we do not believe that we're going to find any of these individuals still alive. >> fbi divers with robotic cameras were in the water for most of the day today searching

for those missing workers. two survivors were pulled out of the water overnight. now, this is the type of story that really hits home in the bay area. the key bridge carries about the same number of cars every day as the richmond san rafael bridge, and of course, the golden gate and bay bridgers see contain exer cruise ship traffic all the time. the old bay bridge took a couple of big hits in a six-year span back in 2007, the cosco busan slammed into a bridge support tower, ripping a gash in the side of the ship that spilled 52,000 gallons of oil into the bay. and in 2013, an empty oil tanger caused some minor damage when it struck a bridge power in heavy fog. the bridge stood its ground, and caltrans tells our wilson walker that's by design. >> this is the most seismically advanced bridge ever designed. right, the eastern span of the bay bridge, it's not just the fender system. >> reporter: caltrans bart talking about the first line of

defense on the new bay bridge. and that is the fender system you see here. while this one is unique to the tower foundation of the eastern span, there is something like this on every bridge in the bay area. >> so some of those systems have completely different foundations so they never actually touch the bridge. other bridges have the fenders designed into their foundations so they're designed to actually crumple and absorb the energy. the idea is that the vessel never actually hits the bridge structure. >> so imagine as people travel around the bay area they're going to see some different engineering, but it's all doing the same thing. >> that's 100% correct, but an it's almost a bridge zoo in the bay area, got so many different types of bridges. depending on where you're at, the fender system has been designed for that particular bridge. >> yesterday's operations were hampered by reduced visibility. >> and the problem we really had has been when oil tankers hit them, the ship takes the damage, not the bridge. the ships don't make it to the bridge, and that's by design.

but if it's an oil tanker, then suddenly you've got oil to deal with in the bay. >> you pick it up and it's just that consistency of that goo. >> reporter: in this respect, the cosco busan spill is evidence that the fender system can work, but what about the circumstances as we understand them in baltimore with a large ship landing a direct hit at a pretty good speed? >> so that impact is being reported at being about eight knot, which is significant for a ship of that size. but had we seen something like that here in one of our bay bridges, the fender systems are the esigned to withstand that. >> reporter: and it's not just the fenders. all of the bay's bridges have been retrofitted some several times over, so they all have an added factor of resilience in the event of a collision. >> so that's another advantage to california because of the earthquakes we've had to design our bridges so that they can absorb energy so. even if you get the bridge actually being touched, all of our bridges have got the ability to

move a little bit. but the idea really is is not to have a vessel hit the structure. >> so the key bridge collapse in baltimore isn't expected to have an impact on the port of oakland here. it could cause some disruptions in the supply chain since right now the port of baltimore is blocked. it's one of the busiest on the east coast. president biden says the federal government will pay to rebuild it. we'll continue to update you on this story on air and online, on our website, of course, kpix.com, and the free cbs news app. tonight we're hearing from diddy's camp for the very first time after federal agents descended on two of his multimillion dollar homes. two raids at the same time on two coasts. the raids were part of a possible sex trafficking investigation. carter evans has more on what the feds might have been looking for. >> reporter: there was nothing subtle when federal agents conducted high profile raids in two large properties in los angeles in and miami owned by music mogul sean "diddy" combs. raids that tonight his attorney

calls a gross overuse of military level force. why a simultaneous cross country search? >> oh, i think they wanted this to be a bit of a surprise. it's a big raid, and what they were going in was to try to find all types of evidence. >> reporter: there are two distinct images of combs, the iconic performer and the one named in multiple lawsuits accusing him of everything from rape to sex trafficking. last december combs posted a statement saying, i did not do any of the awful things being alleged. the lawsuits so far have been in civil court. as for the latest searches -- >> if it involves sex trafficking or drugs or weapons or other illegal behavior, it can easily go from a civil investigation to what we see now a criminal investigation. >> reporter: tmz published video it says was after the raids began. it showed combs walking around opa-locka airport near miami. a short

when a north carolina couple got an alert on their security camera over the weekend, they were already in the crosshairs of a gunman on their back deck. justin berger has more on the simple mistake that saved their lives. >> as i'm folding one towel i have my phone lying in front of

me and i see an alert there's motion on the back. >> reporter: preston looks at his phone a few minutes after 11:00 saturday night. >> i turn around and yell, billy, there's somebody at our back door with a gun. is this a joke? >> reporter: the man at the back door, deputies say, is tyler messer. >> as he pulls the trigger, he turns. he's realizing it didn't go off. he's supposed to have shot him and would be turning towards me. >> reporter: looking through the kitchen window from the laundry room, this is the view preston had of the deck where deputies say tyler messer was caught on this camera pointing a gun through this window at his partner. days later, the couple is still working through the ordeal. >> what seemed like a very methodical plan to kill us both didn't -- it didn't follow through simply because he missed one step. and that was

going ahead and loading his weapon. >> reporter: messer is charged with several crime, including assault by pointing a gun, trespassing, and stalking. >> he's been charged with stalking, and in my mind the first thing i'm thinking once, like i've said, we've gotten bits and pieces of the puzzle. like for how long, you know, for how long he's been -- this has been on his mind and we've thought nothing of him. >> reporter: the mcdowell county sheriff's offer says more charges are anticipated, but that doesn't help them sleep at night. >> if he gets out, i don't see that strongly of held delusion for that long, i don't see it probably changing. so do i need to move. >> i know you're probably wondering about a motive here. a lot of us were. as for the stalking charge, brooks told a local pape ter same guy had come to their house three times in the past couple of years asking for his father who did not live there. and another really scary close call caught on camera, this time in utah. those people were desperately

trying to wave down traffic on the freeway. their suv was disabled. and look at that. they ran for their lives as a semi barrelled right through at full speed between the suv and the median where two of those people had been waiting for help. one of those very unlucky and simultaneously lucky story, two of them in a row, in fact, paul. we've got to talk about the weather, the rain, the timing of the rain, it's raining on our parade every weekend these days i feel. >> and easter weekend not going to be an exception to that. a good chance of rain headed our way. and between now and then there's a hans of rain in between. that first storm system is actually going to aim most of its energy and a lot of its moisture towards the pacific northwest. but enough of it is going to make its way into the bay area for a light to moderate rain showers wednesday into wednesday night, and of course, additional cloud cover. and that's going to take a big bite out of solar electricity, electricity generation, easy for my to say, across the bay area on wednesday. numbers bounce back

thursday. even though there are some showers, breaks in the cloud cover. a mixed bag on thursday. let's check the approach of the rain. first increasing clouds tonight. light rain showers try to sneak in into the north bay as the sun comes up tomorrow. light on and off showers for the majority of the day. the more widespread rain doesn't take shape until we get to the tail end of rush hour. that's going to spread across the entire bay area as we head through wednesday evening and the first half of wednesday night. moderate rain is what we're going to be seeing when it's at its heaviest. not nearly long enough to result in any significant flooding threat. and the last of those showers should be getting out of here as we head just past midnight on wednesday night. but off and on lingering showers are still going to be possible thursday and then we see the next storm system taking shape by the time friday rolls around so. we're going to be watching all these systems heading towards us as we head through the next few days. let's add up just the first one in terms of rainfall. the bulk of the heaviest rain, especially closer to the coast and in the higher elevations.

for most part looking for 0.1 of an toifrj 0.5 of an inch of rain. a similar range for southern half of the bay area but with more rain falling on top of that as we head through the weekend. we're going to be seeing numbers adding up to just shy of one inch of total rainfall in some of the rain shadowed locations like in san jose. expecting 0.75 of an inch there. in general, 1 to 1.5 ifshls of rain but over the space of five days. some of the higher numbers will be as you go farther north the north bay and, of course, right along the coast. the coastal ranges of sonoma and marin county and the santa cruz mountains as well. we're watching for gusty winds with that first system coming through. again, the better chance of rain is going to shape up once again friday into saturday with still lingering showers into sunday for easter sunday. it's not going to be a washout, but be flexible with outdoor plans. the winds pick up as that band of rain moves

through tomorrow evening. the strongest gusts likely in the 20 to 30-mile-an-hour rage. likely more substantial wind energy accompanying that second storm friday into friday evening but short of wind advisory criteria. i don't think we're going have issues with widespread power outages. winter weather advisory at lake level with a winter storm warning in the higher elevations for the first storm and then another one after that is going to pile up even more snow. lost our numbers for some reason there, but you see the colors lining up, the brighter purples indicating the potential for over two feet at some of the highest peaks easter weekend. something to keep in mind if you're heading that direction for the holiday weekend. temperatures are diving over the next couple of days. temperatures in the upper 50s and low 306s for highs across basically entire bay area. doesn't matter if you're along the coast or farther inland, it's a cool end to the month of march. as we start april, things are going to dry out. and they'll warm back up back to seeing a mix of clouds and sunshine on monday. sunshine on tuesday with temperatures returning to

okay. all right, vern, thanks. . a former san quentin inmate decided to go into business for himself after nobody else would hire him. no he's building an east bay coffee empire and as itay hod shows us, a lot of the employees following in his footsteps have literally been in his shoes. >> reporter: at big house beans coffee shop in the heart of oakland, owner john kraus is blewing more than just a cup of joe. for the last decade, john has been on a caffeinated crusade to blend passion with purpose. >> when i got out of prison in 2010 and i applied to jobs everywhere, nobody would hire me. >> reporter: with the help of family and friends, he opened his own coffee shop with a stated mission to give a second shot to ex-cons and recovering addicts. but soon he realized that -- >> anything else for you today? >> reporter: -- was a tall

order. many of his employees would relapse, leaving john with no one to tend to the customers. >> we had a high turnover rate. we couldn't keep hiring and training, hiring and training, it's very costly to do that. >> reporter: that's when an idea began to percolate. he partnered up with city team, a nonprofit faith-based organization that helps people get back on their feet. >> they have meals. they have a bed. and they're staying busy over there. >> reporter: more importantly, they have wraparound services that keep them grounded. francisco garcia is a recovering addict. he says his biggest challenge has been staying sober. >> there's a big temptation to go back out and drink and then you're thinking, oh, it's easy to just take one drink. but no, one drink leads to another. >> reporter: what's kept him on the right track, he says, is the responsibility that comes with a job -- >> i finished step 12. >> reporter: -- coupled with
