4:32 am
>> reporter: you could tell this was not an easy decision to make last night when coast guard discussed this. this morning we are going to see crews back in the water trying to recover the bodies of those six construction workers presumed dead after the bridge collapse here in maryland. meanwhile, this community is just trying to find a way forward as they search for answers. in the shadow of the mangled metal that once was the francis scott key bridge, a community in mourning. >> amen. >> amen. >> we appreciate each and every one of you for coming together with us as we hold those families most importantly in prayer. >> reporter: the crossing collapsed early tuesday when a cargo ship hit a support column. >> the whole bridge just fell down. start -- get everybody. the whole bridge collapsed. >> reporter: the sound jolting neighbors out of their sleep. >> it felt justlike an earthquake. >> reporter: the search for six missing workers was suspended as night fell, the water deemed too cold and the effort too long for anyone to survive.
4:33 am
>> i can't imagine how painful today has been for these families. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news multiple alarms sounded on the ship after it lost power and propulsion. the pilot issued a mayday call giving law enforcement just enough time to stop anyone else from driving on the bridge. the national transportation safety board is leading the investigation into just what happened. and that includes examining any past safety problems with the ship. >> that is part of our investigation where we look at in-depth at safety information. anything that may have occurred prior to this. >> reporter: several engineers say it doesn't appear the collapse was the result of infrastructure problems with the bridge. >> once the bridge was struck by container ship of that size, there's not a bridge that we build, you know, that's any level of economy and efficiency that's going to survive that. >> reporter: now the busy port of baltimore is closed to shipping until all the debris is removed from the water. maryland's governor said that it's too soon to tell when they would be able to start rebuilding that bridge, but
4:34 am
officials stress that priority number one when it comes to any sort of rebuilding process is going to be reopening the port of baltimore because that is just so impactful to the economy of this area. back to you. >> all right, jarred hill in maryland, thank you. as mentioned the economic impact of this collapse will be felt far beyond the city and the state and across the country, as well. the francis scott key bridge is vital to the region while the port of baltimore is one of the largest in the nation. cbs' ramy inocencio reports on the financial cost of this disaster. >> reporter: collapsing in seconds, baltimore's francis scott key bridge was the gateway to much of the country. thousands of trucks transported goods on it daily. goods much of which would end up at this 350,000-square-foot warehouse. john schmidt is vice president and chief operating officer. >> it's going to be a couple hundred dollars minimum to every truckload, each truckload carrying everything from dry goods to

4:37 am
>> do you have concerns about judges parsing medical and scientific studies? >> reporter: at issue the drug mifepristone, used with another drug in nearly two-thirds of abortions. a group of anti-abortion doctors argue the fda wrongly expanded access to the pill in 2016 when it extended the window women can take it from seven to ten weeks. and during the pandemic in 2021, said an in-person doctor's visit was not needed allowing mail-order pharmacies to ship the drug nationwide. erin hawley represents the doctors who say those changes led to increased emergency room visits and compromised women's health. >> women are now left to receive these drugs in the mail or at their dorm room without ever having been checked by a doctor for life-threatening conditions. that's reckless. >> reporter: abortion rights supporters say mifepristone is the safest method of abortion, and the fda, not the court system, has the final word on drug safety. >> the fda acted on an extensive

body of evidence and well within its authority and in accordance with the law. >> reporter: but in court, most of the 90-minute argument focused not on the merits of the fda's decision to expand access but whether the doctors even have legal standing to sue. the arguments will be a narrow procedural ruling for the fda which would preserve nationwide access to the abortion pill. a decision is expected by the end of june. jan crawford, cbs news, the supreme court. a new york judge imposed a gag order on donald trump in his upcoming hush-money trial. it's aimed at preventing the former president from commenting publicly about witnesses, prosecutors, court staff, and jurors. the judge cited his history of threatening remarks against people involved in his legal cases. it does not prevent him from talking about the judge or manhattan da alvin bragg. now to the middle east where
