tributes pouring in for the former senator and the nation's first jewish vice presidential nominee. i think if this hadn't of gone on so long i'd still have my son. >> plus, placing blame, the mother of a former boeing manager-turned-whistleblower speaking out for the first time since his death saying she hold -- holds the company responsible. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. we start the day with the investigation into the baltimore bridge collapse. barges and cranes are now on their way over to help remove the wreckage. this morning we're also getting a look at a new vantage point of the cargo ship approaching the bridge. divers recovered the bodies of two victims. 26-year-old dorlian castillo cabrera and 35-year-old alejandro hernandez fuentes. cbs' wendy gillette joins us from new york with more on this story. wendy, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning. maryland state police say divers found the two victims inside a red pickup truck submerged in around 25 feet of water where the middle of the bridge used to be. teams are now moving from a recovery mission to a salvage operation because divers are not able to safely access other areas of the debris including the remaining victims. new traffic video in the maryland department of transportation shows the massive cargo ship approaching the francis scott key bridge moments before it crashed into the span. the national transportation safety board also released video of what's left. sections of the bridge bent and crumpled around the front of the ship. >> our mission is to determine why something happened, how it happened, and to prevent it from recurring. again, to save lives. >> reporter: the ntsb says there were 21 crew and two pilots on board the ship when it rammed into the bridge. it was transporting 56 containers of hazardous materials and according to the

ntsb some of those containers were breached. authorities say they have seen a sheen on the water indicating chemical leaks. officials have started identifying the six victims, all construction workers. 40-year-old miguel luna had three children and was originally from el salvador. 34-year-old maynor yassir suazo sandoval had two kids and was from honduras. >> we know that they were hard workers. we know that they loved soccer. they loved their families and the community. >> reporter: all wreckage from the crash must be cleared before the port of baltimore can reopen to ships. the navy is bringing in barges equipped with cranes to help. logistics experts say it's possible prices could rise if the global supply chain is disrupted. cargo ships are now getting redirected to other ports along the east coast. the port of baltimore handles more vehicle imports and exports than any other port in the u.s. >> wendy gillette in new york. thank you.

politicians are paying tribute to former connecticut senator joe lieberman. the democratic candidate for vice president in 2000 died yesterday of complications from a fall in new york city. he spent 24 years in the senate and made history as the first jewish nominee for vice president. he later became an independent. in the 2008 presidential race he backed his friend, republican john mccain, over democrat barack obama. in a statement on x, former president obama wrote, "joe lieberman and i didn't always see eye to eye, but he stuck to his principles because he knew it was the right thing to do." al gore who ran for president on the ticket with lieberman in 2000 wrote, "joe was a man of deep integrity that dedicated his life to serving his country." and connecticut senator chris murphy wrote this saying, "he fought and won for what he believed was right and for the state highway adored." joe lieberman was 82 years old.

lawyers for donald trump are expected to argue in court today the charges against him in the georgia election interference case seeking to criminalize political speech and advocacy protected by the first amendment. meanwhile, one day after a new york judge imposed a gag order on trump in his upcoming hush-money trial, trump criticized the judge and his daughter. judge juan merchan imposed the order to prevent the former president from commenting publicly about witnesses, prosecutors, court staff, and jurors. yesterday on truth social, trump said the judge was, quote, depriving him of free speech rights. he also claimed the judge's daughter posted a photo illustration of trump behind bars on social media. a court official said the account did not belong to the judge's order. -- daughter. the gag order does not bar comments about the judge or his family. and a judge is recommending that conservative attorney john eastman lose his california law

license. eastman faces 11 disciplinary charges in state bar court yesterday. it stemmed from his role in trying to have then-vice president mike pence interfere with the certification of joe biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election. the case now goes to the california supreme court. now to a cbs news exclusive. we're hearing for the first time from a family of a former boeing manager who became a whistleblower. john barnett died earlier this month just before he was set to testify in a lawsuit against the airline manufacturer. he'd accused boeing of repeatedly ignoring safety issues. mark strassmann spoke with his mother and brother. thought of himself as trying to do the right thing. >> reporter: vicky stokes' son john barnett worked at boeing for 32 years, the last seven as a quality manager at the south carolina factory that builds the 787 dreamliner. how did he tell you he was being treated?

>> he was like embarrassed at meetings. he would be called out. >> reporter: not the type to back down. >> no, sir. >> reporter: in a whistleblower lawsuit, barnett alleged a litany of safety concerns -- stray titanium shavings falling into electrical wiring, defective oxygen tanks, and managers urging him to cut corners. in this 2022 netflix documentary barnett claimed his managers retaliated against him for speaking up. >> boeing quit listening to their employees. so every time i'd raise my hand and say we've got a problem here, they would attack the messenger and ignore the message. >> reporter: in this hotel parking lot, barnett was found dead from a gunshot wound in his car on march 9th. while police are still investigating, the coroner says it appears to be a suicide. do you blame boeing? >> i think if this hadn't of gone on so long, i would still have my son. my sons would still have their

brother, and we wouldn't be sitting here. so in that respect, i do. >> reporter: barnett's death occurred as depositions continue and as boeing grapples with weeks of headlines about its safety culture, specifically repeated problems with its 737 max planes, including a mid-flight blowout of an alaska airlines door. barnett worked on a different plane but raised similar concerns. >> he wasn't trying to hurt boeing, he was trying to save boeing. he saw this coming and said at some point this is all going to come down on boeing. >> reporter: in the middle of boeing's reputational crisis, boeing ceo dave calhoun announced he's stepping down. in a statement boeing said, "we're saddened by mr. barnett's passing, and our thoughts are with his family and friends." i asked rodney barnett about his brother's legacy. >> that's all he wanted, that's all he wanted, just the safety of the public. >> reporter: he thought that was at stake? >> he knew that was at stake,

and that's what he was concentrating on. >> reporter: barnett's family is trying to carry on his whistleblower lawsuit against boeing after seven years of litigation. it's scheduled for trial this september. mark strassmann, cbs news, charleston, south carolina. overseas now to the war in gaza. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has agreed to reschedule his delegation's visit to the white house to discuss a possible operation in rafah. netanyahu canceled the planned trip on monday in protest of the u.s. abstaining from the u.n. security council vote demanding an immediate cease-fire. the decision to reschedule came after top u.s. officials met with israel's defense minister this week in washington. netanyahu said a victory against hamas is impossible without entering rafah to eliminate the terror group's last four battalions. coming up this hour, random stabbing attacks in illinois leave at least four people dead. an update on the suspect.

locations. the suspect was arrested after authorities were called to a reported home invasion where a woman who was trying to get away was stabbed. a good samaritan who tried to help her was also stabbed. there is no word on a motive for the attacks. "the new york times" says new york city took a crucial step forward to becoming the first american city with congestion pricing. yesterday transit authorities approved a new $15 toll for most drivers entering midtown and lower manhattan. the program is aimed at reducing traffic and raising $1 billion for mass transit projects. it's supposed to go into effect in june, but it is facing legal challenges from small business owners, elected officials, and residents across the region. and the orlando sentinel" says disney and the state of florida settled lawsuits over who controls disney world's governing district. it comes almost two years after governor ron desantis took over the tourist district from disney supporters.
