fundraiser raking in big bucks in new york city. and weekend washout. a powerful storm moving into southern california. millions of people under a flood watch. the potential impact on your easter plans. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. two barges armed with cranes will soon be arriving in baltimore to help remove all that debris left behind after the francis scott key bridge collapsed. officials say they warn it will be a long process to reopen the port to ships and much longer to rebuild the bridge. cbs' jarred hill joins us from new york with more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: the biggest crane on the eastern seaboard is coming into baltimore to help clean up the wreckage of that bridge collapse. this is an important step not only to get the port open again but to help the families of those presumed dead start to find closure. new video from the national transportation safety board

shows the immense tack ahead. -- task ahead. sections of the bridge wound around the ship that brought it down. >> this vessel's almost the size of the eiffel tower, and the only difference is is that it now has the key bridge laying on top of it. >> reporter: engineering teams are figuring out the best way to cut the bridge up so it can be lifted off of the ship. >> number-one priority is to reopen the port of baltimore as fast as we can and do it safely. >> reporter: the biden administration has approved $60 million in emergency funds to deal with the aftermath, including rebuilding the bridge. >> this work will not take hours. this work will not take days. this work will not just take weeks. we have a very long road ahead of us. >> reporter: four construction workers are still missing, but their bodies won't be recovered until more debris is removed. the brother of one of them, maynor yassir suazo sandoval, told cbs news he wishes he could have stopped him from going to work that night.

two workers did survive the collapse. moises diaz says his friend julio cervantes escaped out of the window of his sinking truck. he thought, i'm going die here, but his friend made it out safely even though he can't swim. those who live nearby are still in shock about the disaster. >> it's just surreal. just like i can't wrap my mind around the fact that that whole bridge is actually between. -- actually gone. >> reporter: for ships that had planned stops at one of the busiest ports in the u.s., it's unclear how long this waiting game will last. and you know, it's not just the debris that you can see above the water. everything that sunk to the bottom has to be cleared, as well, before the pour can -- the port can reopen. this is crucial economic engine, it handles more vehicles and farm equipment than any other port in the united states. >> a huge job ahead. jarred hill in new york. thank you. the baltimore orioles paid tribute to the victims of the francis scott key bridge collapse. a moment of silence was held for those victims during opening day

at camden yards yesterday. the first responders who helped save lives were honored on the field between innings in front of the soldout crowd. president biden's re-election campaign is getting a big boost at new york city's iconic radio city music hall. the president was joined on stage by his democratic predecessors, former presidents barack obama and clinton, for a history-making fundraiser. outside radio city, hundreds of pro-palestinian protesters took to the streets ahead of the star-studded event. here's cbs' cailtin huey-burns. >> reporter: in new york city, a parade of presidents. >> we got three presidents in the building tonight. >> reporter: headlining an event at radio city music hall that raked in $25 million for joe biden's re-election campaign. ♪ a record for a political fundraiser, bolstering biden's significant cash advantage even as he lags behind donald trump in the polls. >> kamala and i desperately need

your help because, look, there's only about six or seven states that are going to determine the outcome of this election. >> reporter: the biden campaign has $71 million in the bank compared to the trump campaign's nearly $34 million. trump's legal troubles have been draining resources. a super pac supporting him spent $8.5 million on legal fees so far this year including $5.5 million last month. >> a crooked judge shouldn't say we're going to have you post a bond and take all of that money that i could be spending on a campaign. >> reporter: sarah bryner is a campaign finance expert. in a race this close, can money move the needle? >> money can definitely move needles in close races. and it's by getting just the smallest fraction of people to think about the race in the way you want them to think about it. >> reporter: trump also tried to cash in on the democrats' fundraising event asking for donations to help defeat the biden-obama-clinton cartel. he was in new york attending the

wake of a fallen nypd police officer. trump stands to benefit financially from his social media company truth social going public this week, but that has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest if elected president and adding to his financial pressures, he has just one week to post that $175 million bond in a civil fraud case. cailtin huey-burns, cbs news, new york. and during last night's fundraiser, president biden said saudi arabia and other arab countries are, quote, prepared to fully recognize israel. he also repeated calls for a post-gaza plan for israel including a pathway to a two-state solution. as for the war in gaza, the israeli military says it killed a senior hamas leader trying to escape al-shifa hospital. fighting there has been going on for about ten days. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu met with families of kidnapped soldiers for the first time since they

were taken hostage during the october 7th massacre, vowing to bring every one of them home. as the war rages on, the faithful are marking holy week in jerusalem. yesterday the washing of the feet ceremony was held at the church of the holy sepulchre. christians believe jesus was buried there and resurrected. in the u.s. we're learning details about the deadly stabbing rampage in illinois. a 22-year-old illinois man was killing four people including a teenager and wounding seven others. cbs' sabrina franza has more including the suspect's explanation for the attack. >> reporter: rockford police say the deadly attack started around 1:15 p.m. on wednesday. >> i have another call coming in for a possible stabbing. >> reporter: according to authorities, the suspect, 22-year-old christian soto, had just smoked marijuana with his friend, jacob schupback. soto claims it was laced and

that he became paranoid and attacked jacob and his mother ramona. >> he said he retrieved a knife from jacob's house and proceeded to stab jacob and ramona to dath. >> reporter: soto went on a rampage, police say, breaking into homes and attacking people at random. seven were injured and two more killed including 15-year-old jenna newcomb and postal worker jay larson. this man saw him being attacked in his front yard and called the police. >> he kept stabbing the guy. he had a little knife, ran over the mailman. >> reporter: roughly 20 minutes later a sheriff's deputy took soto into custody. he's facing multiple felony charges including first-degree murder. neighbors came together to mourn. >> that love and compassion that we see here today, let's carry this out into the rest of our days here in rockford because we are better when we are together. >> reporter: soto appeared in

welcome back. newly released video in inside a texas school bus shows the moment a concrete truck crossed the line and hit the bus last week. the bus then swerves and rolls over. two people inside were killed including a 5-year-old boy. court documents show the truck driver admitted getting only three hours of sleep and taking cocaine the morning of the crash. another deadly bus crash and a new person is charged in an idaho prison escape. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports a bus plunged off a bridge in south africa killing 45 people. authorities say it was carrying worshippers headed to an easter festival when it veered off the bridge on a mountain pass yesterday, landing in a ravine, and burst into flames. the only survivor was an 8-year-old child who was seriously injured. no word on what caused the

driver to lose control. the "idaho statesman" says another person was charged in connection with an ambush that helped a prison inmate escape custody. authorities say tia garcia owned and provided the car that was used to free sklyar meade, a white supremacist prison gang member. he escaped from an armed accomplice attacked corrections officers at a boise hospital last week. three officers were wounded. the escaped inmate and the accomplice were captured about 36 hours later. and "the state" says south carolina will be forced to use a congressional map previously deemed unconstitutional in an upcoming election. yesterday a panel of federal judges ruled the same map has been used because the supreme court has taken too long to issue a ruling on whether it's constitutional. the same panel of judges previously said the map discriminated against black voters. the congressional district in question is currently held by republican nancy mace.

closed on this good friday, but ended the week in mixed territory. the dow rose 47 points to close at a record high. the nasdaq lost 20, and the s&p 500 gained five points to also hit a record. fallen cryptocurrency mogul sam bankman-fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison for one of the largest financial frauds in u.s. history. the 32-year-old was convicted in november for stealing more than $8 billion of customers of his now-bankrupt company ftx. his lawyers plan to appeal. kia is recalling more than 400,000 tellurides because of a roll away risk while in park. the recall covers all vehicles made between 2020 and 2023 and some 2024 models, too. kia says until owners can bring in their vehicles to get the free software fix, they should use the manual parking brake instead. and kfc is getting saucy. the company is adding saucy nuggets to its menu starting

"tommy" won five tony awards in 1993 including best original score. a big upset in the ncaa men's basketball tournament sweet 16. number-four seed alabama knocked off number-one seed north carolina 89-87 in the west region. unc is the first number-one seed to be eliminated in this year's tournament. up next for alabama is six-seed clemson. the tigers upset number two seed arizona 77-72 in another west region semifinal. it's the second trip to the elite eight for clemson in school history. top overall seed and defending champion connecticut continued to dominate. the huskies demolished san diego state 82-52 in the east's semifinal. it was a rematch of last year's title game. connecticut will play number three seed illinois next.
