coo and i thought oh, this is what jessica has been talking about all week. ooh yeah, it's the calm before storm. and it's only going to get heavier as we head into this next couple of hours. for many morning commuters not early morning commuters like us. now heading into the next couple of hours the cold front is moving in from offshore. lasting into the afternoon with thunderstorm activity possible but to add to that our daytime highs are going to be noticeably cooler. that's coming up in just a bit and i wanted to start off with the first alert doppler on this morning. the first band of rain really coming in slow. it will hit the peninsula when the next hour or so and time this out on futurecast. actually just the little tie it in hit and miss showers this morning. and in the afternoon, well, more rain is on the way for us. let's take a look at the time on this. if you leave the house just around 7:00, 8:00 a.m. this is what it's looking like by 6:30. a little bit of flurries all the way up in the north bay and keep in mind this is a cold front and this cold

dense air is allowing for a chance light snow in the high elevated areas like mount hamilton for example. watch what happens as we advance the clock all the way into the 7:30, 8:30 hour, it continues to sweep throughout the bay area and now many of us are trying to get to school and work and we're already seeing close to around a quarter inch of rain in areas like napa. stretching all the way up into santa rosa with close to that number all the way down into san francisco. so quick moving band of rain throughout the bay area. here's that snow i was talking about all the way up in the higher elevated areas and it's the same trend all the way up in the mountains just near clearlake. all just north of santa rosa. we'll continue to watch this area of low pressure here's the center right there. sweep its way down throughout the afternoon bringing in some gusty conditions. and more rain right around the corner. more on that coming up. for now over to you, g. all right, jess, thank you. let's talk about the freeways right now. as we get ready to head out the door and cake a live look here at at the bay bridge bay bridge. so keeping a close eye on the roadways. when that rain really settles in and that slick surface out there. be careful right now things are looking pretty good and quiet. at least through there. we're not seeing a lot of brake

lights along 880. most of the bridges are pretty quiet. all approaches are clear to the bay bridge. 92, san mateo bridge as well as 84. looks like this is a little slow though for that ride into the altamont pass. so westbound 580, 205 over to 680, clocking in at about 33 minutes right now with some slow speeds as you head through there. nicole? well, the a's wrapped upped their first home stand of the season and now they're gearing up for the first road trip to detroit. but you may be wondering was oakland able to avoid a boston red sox sweep? former giant ross stripling took the mound for oakland and get this threw seven innings striking out three. only run was a sac fly in the 4th. but a's hitters combined for eight hits and didn't get any of those runners home. boston closer jansen gets a's' ryan know that swinging to end the game the red sox complete the sweep defeating oakland, 1-0. the a's play in detroit tomorrow at 10:10 in the morning. an unfortunate loss for the a's seeing as pitching

was pretty on point yesterday. but what's more unfortunate, reports coming out of sacramento that they're going to finalize a deal to play after this year of course. >> it just feels like insult to injury right? you know for now they're just reports, and nothing is confirmed. but what is confirmed this morning, the a's face the ending in their lease with the oakland coliseum. all right, that's the first building block of the story. a's leadership was supposed to meet in sacramento yesterday. they were going to talk about possible move to sutter health park. which is home of the giants' triple-a affiliate. a lot of meeting happening yesterday but pay attention to this. in the coming days. because this speaks to money moves. the crinkle 8:00 this morning reporting the a's are trying to readjust their broadcasting contract with nbc sports. that is important to them because the team is only guaranteed the full amount of their sports network deal if they play in the bay area. sew that's the business part of the conversation. but let's talk about you the fans right? will you follow the team to sacramento? >> diehard a's' fans like

yourself support the team if they were to be at sutter health? >> i -- i will be in there in protest. just as i am at many of the activities we put together out in the oakland. no, i will not. >> so let's talk about what you the fan want to keep the a's in oakland right? the team met with oakland officials who offered the team just shy of $100 million for a five year extension of the coliseum. so what happened there? statement from the a's said they were far apart with the city on terms. that's all we know. meanwhile, let's go into the desert. in las vegas, the a's look ready to move into their new $1.5 billion ballpark by 2028. this is what the dugout digs would look like. things are happening fast in vegas over the last several days. the a's have hired the same company the raiders used to oversee ticket and suite sales even before ground is broken on the park. they are looking at ticket sales. and then this, the lead story in las vegas for days. this is the tropicana casino resort in las vegas. and in recent days, they closed the

doors after seven decades. las vegas locals getting a last chance to tour the casino and everybody there were told the place would be demolished in october to clear the way for the new a's' ballpark on the las vegas strip. for weeks and months and years the fix is in. las vegas is taking them. >> it looks like it's all but happened and i mean it's -- on its way. >> right. >> you were in las vegas, you know, how these things work. i feel like just seeing that chain go around the door at tropicana. going back though to the lease for next year. until that signed you know, you have that ink on dotted line, i don't know. i'm still -- thinking maybe oakland is a possibility for them. until 2028. >> keeps the broadcast deal. that's -- you know, money moves also talk. >> yeah. for sure. >> all right, let's look live over at san francisco now. and the crowded race for mayor in the city has another high-profile politician throwing his hat in the ring.

after months of speculation, volume aaron peskin is joining the race. he's expected to make his formal announcement at a rally in chinatown this weekend. outside of peskin there are three other candidates. that are trying to unsotomayor london breed. you have supervisor safai, former san francisco mayor mark ferrell and daniel lyre. nurses working for santa clara county are entering the third and final day of picketing. they say they went on strike demanding better paid, staffing and security. their contract expired back in october. the county says it does offer competitive salaries. the county also hired nearly 1,000 nurses to keep essential services running during the strike. students and teachers are hoping for a calmer day on this petaluma middle school campus. yesterday, police arrested two students who lit a firework inside of a bathroom at kennel worth junior high just before noon. the sound of explosion

caused a panellic on campus and led to an evacuation while police searched the school. we talked to one parent who arrived to pick up her daughter in the middle of all of this chaos. >> she definitely said she saw kids running. there were some kids that did try to leave campus. i think out of fear. not out of -- kids that had done anything wrong. because that can definitely be something that is going to trigger nervousness. >> police say the firework was heavy duty. they compared it to a commercial grade explosive device like an m-1,000. the students were arrested for multiple felonies including possession of an explosive device and vandalism. time right now #:092349 morning. stories of heroism in earthquake rocked taiwan. an update on the missing and the stranded ahead. and later, crisis on highway 1. the panic from businesses after part of the road fell into the ocean below. and here's a live look outside on this thursday morning. it is a first alert weather day. you can se

altogether or leaning and you then you see at the base of the leaning building there are the rescuers risking their own lives. also a massive effort to keep the buildings stabilized long enough to get the people out. part of life there just in the bay area but this one was the biggest and the most violent quake in almost three decades. and it hit at the worst possible time. just as people were headed to school and to work. you know, more than 1,000 are confirmed injured and at least nine dead. but it is early in the search and stories from people from home here in the united states over there in taiwan. experiencing the shaker are crossing the waters this morning. here's california. she's telling about the rude awakening from the shaker. listen. >> definitely a shock when it happened. the whole room was shaking. we tried to find like somewhere to hide like under a table. >> shaking has not stopped reports the this morning from taiwan say more than 300 aftershocks have been felt and

continue to destabilize the buildings where people remain trapped. this morning, there are also reports that the majority of the people trapped are in the national park area. we understand most of them are hotel employees. >> yeah, and we're also hearing that tsunami warnings continue in the region this morning. taiwan is no stranger to tremors. the island sits along the ring of fire and an area around the edges of the pacific ocean known for frequent seismic activity. our coastline also sits on the area but it's not often an earthquake of this magnitude shaking beneath the place as populated as taiwan. the last time taiwan felt this type of tremor was in 1999. when a deadly 7.6 magnitude quake killed more than 2,000 people. since then, the mayor of hualien says the government has been trying to gather resources and educate citizens on self-protection. and we're going to have updates throughout day and stay with us for continuing coverage on our website, kpix.com. and then also on the free cbs news bay

area app. let's get a look at your forecast today. and jessica, i know it's the first alert weather day. but we were talking about the earthquake in taiwan and you have spent a lot of time there and you have got friends there still and we were just talking about this earlier too. how you walk into the streets in the past and seen the differences in the building of how they sit now. >> put it into perspective real fast gianna. you know the morning hours where you are just trying to get the kids to school or you know, rush to work? it was those early morning hours when that earthquake hit. my friends who live over there that i'm actually visiting in a couple of weeks they were dealing with just craziness with you know, the sidewalk shaking like jay. things falling off of buildings and that was in taipei which is 80 miles north of where the epicenter was of the quake. so put it in perspective, there's still a lot of damage and impacts. still being felt. it's a first alert weather day here in the bay area. it is gusty and it is wet already for some of our friends up in the north bay. and we're continuing to watch this frontal system

move in from offshore. as it's bringing in a series of showers that we're going to be noticing within the next couple of hours throughout the peninsula. throughout the east bay. and stretching all the way down into the santa clara valley too. not forgetting about you north bay by the way. you guys already getting hit with rain and take a look at this. in the next couple of hours continue to watch that first band really sweep in in the 7:00 hour near san francisco. that 8:00 hour, all the way off in the east bay and by 9:00, it's now making its way into the santa clara valley. with snow all the way down near mount hamilton. the center of the area of low pressure. it's sitting just offshore. that's the reason why we're seeing some gusty conditions and we noticed that yesterday too. here's that center right there and you can watch it swirl in a counterclockwise direction as makes its way to the south bringing in close to an inch of rain in the north bay just by 7:00 tonight and a quarter inch into san francisco. we'll continue to watch that drop to the south and still cool enough where we're seeing snow into the overnight hours tonight up near mount hamilton and then it -- actually starting to see the

leftover showers into the early morning hours tomorrow. a quick look at numbers in mount hamilton. an inch of snow expected at the peak of it and a similar trend in the north bay mountains. and potentially down closer to areas like ben lomond. as we head into next couple of days we'll continue to watch the storm develop. but it's going to continue to move to the south leaving behind some cool temperatures right behind it. so let me drop this monitor and i want to talk about daytime highs today. keep in mind just two days ago it was sunny and we were sitting in the 70s off in the east bay. today, that's not a reflection of this at all and i mean we're talking about low 50s and hand-in-hand throughout the bay area. from half-moon bay where we're expecting gusty conditions along the coast today with the wet conditions during this morning commute too. all the way off into the east bay with very similar trends. we're sitting in the low 50s and that will only be the case today. because by tomorrow, this system moves to the south and then we see a gradual warm-up as we head into early next week. coming up in just a bit i'll show you the 7 day forecast and we're expecting sunshine and 80s mid next week. so something to look forward to but for now over to

you, g. >> hard to believe the big shift in temperatures considering it's pretty chilly and that wet weather hitting the bay area today. but let's kick things off with a live look at bay bridge toll plaza. so far calm before the storm as jess mentioned. everything is pretty quiet and clear. live look here as you work across the span and a nice commute heading into san francisco this morning. for now. that's going change when the wet weather settles. in extra time this morning especially when it's slick and sloppy out there. we're doing okay for the most part and in fact most of bay area freeways are pretty quiet and i know a lot of kids are off this week for spring break. certainly helping the traffic patterns. busier though in the busy hours closer to the 7:00 hour. but look at the travel times. doing fine on highway 80, highway 4, 101. just once you get past it you are good to go. looks like some delays as you work into the altamont pass. reed? all right, gianna. thanks. good morning to those of you getting ready for your run in golden gate park. know this as you make the run. the park

across our beautiful bay bridge. now it is a first alert weather day. so it's not going to be that beautiful outside, jessica. >> no. but if you are commuting right now i mean literally right now. you should be okay. when it its way in from the north and boy is that going cool our temperatures down a lot as we head into this afternoon. for example, yesterday morning, around this time, we were sitting in the 40s and 50s. today, our daytime highs are sitting in the 40s and 50s and it's a chilly day for us today but really i want to dive more into the rain before we talk about temperatures coming up in just a bit. here's the first alert doppler as we wake up and head out the door. snow is already falling up in the sierra from the storm and we're starting to see the showers get closer on shore. as we head within the next 15, 20 minutes or so. i mean just near san francisco along ocean beach and stretching down into pacifica. half-moon bay right around the corner too and we're seeing light showers sweep over the marin headlands so if you commute from the golden gate bridge into the city, that's also what you are dealing with this morning. now let's time this out on futurecast. i love this tool on a day like today. the best part is there's a lot of crisics with this storm that we're able to actually

pinpoint. for example, the center of the area of low pressure that's bringing in all these showers is sitting just offshore. watch as the band moves its way in bringing in snow to mount hamilton and a quarter inch of rain by 10:00 a.m. in the north bay. you can see the center right here bringing in gusty conditions and more on and off showers through the afternoon hours today. that rotation continues to sweep to the south just past san francisco into the 7:00 hour tonight and it continues to move south bringing in more snow to mount hamilton. the snowfall totals in just a bit. and all the way up near areas like fairfield stretching over into santa rosa really see a diversified number setup. i mean we're talking about close to an inch just near the north bay. less impressive numbers the more east we go closer to the sacramento valley. why that's the case for now over to you, g. jessica, thank you. yeah, just kind of waiting for the rain to settle in and certainly will affect the roadways this morning. live look here at the golden gate bridge. so far, so good. things are dry out there which is good news for anyone making that ride into san francisco this morning. no delays out of marin county right now and no road work to

slow you down. still looking pretty good at the bay bridge toll plaza. no metering lights just yet. and that ride as you work westbound over into san francisco. moving along pretty well overall. and in fact, everything is fairly quiet really the only brake lights or issues we have seen so far is that ride in and out of the altamont pass this morning. well, big sur residents have been asked to evacuate before a spring storm brings more rain to the area. authorities once again closing highway 1 which was damaged. this was from the previous storm that happened last saturday. so part of the highway slipped away and fell into ocean below. the chp had been leading one way convoys to get people in and out of the area. but those convoys have been suspended for today and tomorrow as the rain is expected to move in. that means residents and businesses are cut off. >> it's just absolutely essential that that single lane be made open to the public at the earliest opportunity. so the businesses can reopen and employees can be back at work. >> the local chamber of

commerce says the shutdowns have eliminated about 80%. wow. of big sur's work force. leading to losses of more than $1 million a day. thank you gianna. let's talk about that district 16 race in silicon valley. we know former san jose mayor sam liccardo is th frontrunner. but the question of who he will face off with in november? that race is the real headline maker. so what is the headline this morning? a tie. evan low and joe simitian deadlocked at exactly 30,249 votes each trailing him by less than five percentage points. san mateo and santa clara counties will issue the official results by 5:00 p.m. today. what happens next? it's up to the candidates we understand to decide whether to request a recount. otherwise, there will be a three way race in november. listen to this. >> state law basically says that when there's a tie for the two positions that we're

talking about right now, the -- the two will go to the november election so there will be a three way race for the congressional seat. >> by the way a candidate requesting a recount has to cover the cost and there's no assurance a recount will go in that person's favor. we'll watch that one closely. you know in the wake of several safety incidents involving cruise robo taxis in san francisco, lawmakers at the capitol want a bill that would give power to police to ticket driverless cars. so the bill sponsored by south bay state senator dave cortez and he has the support of oakland and san francisco and suspect suspect counties it looks like. the intention here is to put more power to make decisions about autonomous vehicles not in the hands of the state, but rather in the hands of local leaders. turning now to the war in gaza. and what's really been a chilly relationship lately between president joe biden and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the who world leaders are scheduled to speak by phone today for the first time since israel launched the

air strike that killed seven aid workers from the world health kitchennened monday. israeli officials say the attack was a grave mistake and netanyahu called the strike unintentional. one of the slain workers was a u.s. canadian dual citizen. the organization's founder said he believes the idf targeted his workers saying they knew the route and the communication between them was clear. meanwhile, illinois senator tammy duckworth calling on the federal aviation administration to investigate boeing's procedures when it comes to informing pilots about certain features. she is specifically talking about that alaska airlines flight in january which a door panel blew out of mid-flight. apparently the pilots were not informed or aware that the cockpit door was designed to automatically open during rapid depressurization. six in ten americans believe climate change is causing harm in the united states. and that it will get

worse during their lifetime. that's according to a pew research center survey. amid those concerns, two peninsula mothers are encouraging young people to think about how they can care for the environment. sharon chin introduces us to this week's bay area jefferson award winners. >> reporter: when shirley lee and eileen kim met years ago as moms of elementary students, they never would have predicted their shared passion would take them down a path of encouraging young filmmakers. >> they justen spire me. they can definitely make a difference. >> reporter: eileen and shirley were board members with the citizens environmental council of burlingame. and an environmental education and advocacy group. and they wanted to inspire more children to learn about our planet outside of the classroom. >> i'm sure there's some things going on but there's no curriculum right now. >> i thought well, let's try to put on a film fest for students to kind of share their

ideas about the environment. >> reporter: so they launched the first annual citizens environmental club student film festival in 2018. they drew on students' affinity for making videos. >> anything else feel free to leave a note. >> yes. >> reporter: every year, students in grades four through 12 create their own film of up to five minutes that shows how they care about the world around them. a free workshop offers storytelling tips. winning entries receive $150 cash prizes funded by peninsula clean energy. >> but studies have shown there's a major partner in crime. >> reporter: kaylaling won a top award for her seventh grade filament. now a tenth grader, she says the experience has shaped her career goals. >> i grew really passionate about telling stories about environmental justice through film making and through storytelling. and i was really empowered to do that.

to see light showers justifiablely wrap the peninsula and now that will continue to be the case as it moves its way off in the east through the next hour. continue to watch this develop really as we head into the early morning hours for that morning commute. and take a look at this. look at your local community. livermore, concord i'm talking to you. within the 7:00 hour you are still sitting relatively dry. while areas like san francisco are getting hit with some of the heaviest rain we'll see all morning. but a little bit of snow up in the higher elevated areas off north of clearlake and then here we go all the way into the afternoon hours. this is just by 10:00 actually before the afternoon. already starting to see snow near mount hamilton. that will continue to sweep off into the sacramento valley by lunchtime. and you can start to see the center of this area of low pressure sitting just offshore. we've been seeing storms like this a lot this season. and that will continue to move to the south wringing in more moisture from offshore. as the winds now start sweeping in if the south associated with that circulation. now here we go into the 11:00 hour tonight. early morning hours tomorrow. at this point we're seeing close to around an inch of rain in the north bay and close to around a quarter inch down into

the santa clara valley. luckily we start the dry up heading into friday afternoon. leaving us with a clear weekend ahead. but it's worth noting this is such a significant cold front that we're actually seeing temperatures drop so low we're allowed to see snow up near mount hamilton. about an inch expected. cool waking up tomorrow and actually being able to see it once clouds move through. another thing worth mentioning too. the pollen count was high as we kicked off this week. now in the low category tomorrow heading into friday. a lot of changes around the corner for us and of course we're here to update you. a look at the daytime highs though. a chilly one for us today. up 40s and lower 0s felt through the bay area. the more north we go, clearlake for example off in the east bay we go. we're sitting in the low 50s but keep in mind i mean gosh it was just two days ago, we were talking about 70s and sunshine. yesterday it was transition day with cloudy conditions and breezy as can be. gosh i feel bad for the dog and i didn't make it to the dog park yesterday. the winds are way too much right now.

well r you ready to rock? well, this week's bay area backstage takes us to san jose where a group of kids are rocking out and ready to light up the montgomery theater in cmt's school of rock rock the musical. it tells the story of skill. >> our name. that is rock & roll. >> they sing. they dance. they act. but there's one more skill these kids need to be in this musical. they also need to know how to rock. san jose's children's musical theater will be taking on school of rock for the first time. and four members of the cast are in the band. cj, donnie, hope and falcon. will all be playing six to seven songs live leading the show. some learning to play their instruments just months ago. how long have you been playing the bass. >> i learned it for the show. >> balancing a busy rehearsal
