right now at 5:30, all across the country, people are counting down the hours until monday's total solar eclipse. on monday, day will turn in tonight for a few minutes, a total solar eclipse will travel along the path of totality stretching from texas to maine. and millions of americans are expected to travel to spots along that path to catch a glimpse. aaa is warning drivers to expect more traffic and the faa is telling travelers to expect delays at airports. small towns from texas to the midwest all the way to new england are bracing for a rush of visitors. >> today i think the rate is $80 per night. and the night before the eclipse, how much is it? >> it is around $500. and it sold out. >> a new survey finds many americans are not aware of the potential danger, more than one third of those asked did not

know that looking at a solar eclipse without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage. doctors say sunglasses are not enough, look for certified solar eclipse glasses and viewers with filters that meet international safety standards. >> the retina is what gives us our vision and that's the thing we are most concerned about, the rays impacting the retina, there were people that suffered vision loss after the 20 17th eclipse. >> we will see a partial eclipse and the bay area will have plenty of viewing parties for the cosmic event. the space and science center is holding a special party and visitors can watch and take part in some special science demonstrations. they will provide eclipse safety glasses so you will have a chance to look at the interstellar spectacle through

a telescope. >> it reminds us that we are part of a much larger universe, there are things going on without any human involvement at all, and that certainly is fun to stop and think about. >> in the bay area, the eclipse will start around 10:15 a.m. and last for two hours. remember, monday will be our last chance to experience a solar eclipse in our own backyard until 2045. and the weather is key to any eclipse viewing experience. darren peck joins us with a look at the conditions. >> the good thing about monday, by the time we have gone to that point, system is totally gone. and we will clear out. we should have clear skies and the clouds will not be a factor for us when it comes to viewing the eclipse. what is important to understand about this eclipse, besides all the stuff we were

just covering about the very real risks of making the mistake of trying to look at it without proper eyewear is what we are going to get at home is not really quite the spectacle that a total solar eclipse really is. here's what it's going to look like for us on monday. as the mockup shows you how much of the sun is going to be covered by the moon. you can see it is a miss, we are getting a partial solar eclipse. it is going to be noticeable, it is noteworthy that it is great for kids and field trips to gain an awareness and learn about these things, but in terms of the real significance of the show, now i'm going to show you what dallas is going to experience, because dallas is in the pathway. when the moon covers the sun perfectly, it is such a rare and unique experience, we

were talking about 2017, when you get to this point, when the moon really does go in total eclipse of the sun, you can see stars, you can see constellations that you don't normally see in the summer because when they are up, you never see them, you can see or ryan in the sky. the other thing he saw was a flare coming off of the sun for the two minutes, you could see the corona which is the atmosphere of the sun and he was able to see it with the naked eye. it is a totally different experience, this is why people travel and pay $500 for a hotel room that is normally $80 per night, the difference between the experience. we are going to have a celestial event but it is not really what everybody is going nuts over. and you can see where that path is going to be. there's going to be clouds

the u.s. says iran is preparing a significant retaliatory attack on israel.

tehran has vowed revenge after israel's air strike on the iranian consulate in syria on monday, senior leaders of the military were killed. the u.s. thinks iran will strike back between now and next week. the u.s. has warned iran not to use the pretext of israel's attack to target the hundreds of u.s. troops in syria and iraq. the world central kitchen is demanding an infant -- independent investigation into the air strikes that killed seven workers. according to the preliminary investigation, members of the armed forces thought they were hitting hamas targets, they blamed the attack on mistaken identification errors and decision-making and a violation of standard operating procedures. the israeli military fired two officers as a result of the investigation. >> all i can say at the moment is to offer my apologies and to say that we share in their

grief. >> they were targeted systematically. >> the world central kitchen said all three vehicles the workers were in were clearly marked and israel was aware of their movements and their mission. president joe biden paid a visit to baltimore today, he got a firsthand look at the wreckage from last week's deadly bridge collapse. the president was briefed on the recovery efforts and got a chance to meet with the families of the construction workers who died in the collapse. the president sent congress a formal request to fund 100% of the bridge rebuilding efforts. the job market continues to defy expectations according to the labor department, the u.s. economy added 303,000 jobs last month, that is more than expected. at the same time, unemployment fell to 3.8%, the latest report marks 39 consecutive months of added jobs. unemployment has also remained low for an unusually long stretch and all that even

let's get straight to first alert doppler on this first alert weather afternoon, and for good reason, a very impressive showing of thunderstorms on the east side, moving through the east bay valley. let's get a closer perspective on this and find out where some of the more notable reign of the afternoon is, there is a complex in the tri-valley right now, we started watching that about 2 1/2 hours ago, when a thunderstorm developed over napa. that continued to move down 680, walnut creek, now it is in the tri-valley. we are likely going to see more redevelopment, but notice where it is, if you are in the immediate day, there is nothing, you even have some breaks of blue sky. but there is a very definite focus here over on the east bay. and when we put it into the futurecast, we can pick up these different cells that have the potential

to redevelop, so the high-resolution forecast model does put together the ability for some more systems, to develop once again over the same exact areas. so that is the way the rest of tonight will go. and even those will turn off and we will be done. it is going to get cold tomorrow morning, just to give you the overview on what it is going to feel like for your saturday morning, and you already know if you were up early today, because the numbers tomorrow are very similar to where we were on friday. a lot of low 40s for most of us, the inland valleys, there's your tri-valley, going into the upper 30s. low 40s along the coast. san francisco will be in the low 40s, which is cold enough for the city and of course the north bay valley, for santa rosa, that is going into the mid-30s. another cold morning, but that should be the last one. things are going to get gradually warmer in the

mornings and in the afternoons, the only thing for the weekend, there is a weak system that is going to try to bring a little bit more rain late saturday night. let's get a closer look. there's that band of rain, that is saturday afternoon, it is way out on the far northwest coast saturday afternoon. but overnight, late saturday into sunday, that line of showers gets here and we will see a light band of rain moving across the bay. and in the early morning hours of sunday. when we get to sunday, i don't have rain, that is a quarter till five in the morning. and there's this week front trailing a few showers. it would be a shame to put some rain on sunday, because look at the rest of sunday, plenty of blue skies and that will set us up for the eclipse on monday. so that is good news in terms of our forecast for that, to be
